Verses 1-2 – When you begin to break down Hebrew terms in Scripture all of a sudden Scripture takes on a new and more dynamic meaning than before. Last week we read Chapter 11 because we had time left after reading Chapter 10. We had some good questions and comments on Chapter 11 but we failed to find a pivotal phrase in verse 1. Look below at verse 1 in the ISR and KJV+ versions:

Verses 1-2 – Verse 1 sounds somewhat innocuous but I think it has big implications for us. Didn’t YHVH speak to us while we were still in Mitsrayim (Church). We may or may not have known His Name but I doubt that we knew about His Moedim or that YHVH had His own calendar. By the chesed of the Almighty I learned about His Moedim in 1979 but it took 40 years to put it together with all the other things we have learned. AND!, I am still learning, maybe not fast enough for everybody but I am still learning.

Shemoth (Exodus) 13

Verses 1-2 – These two verses are linked to verses 12-13 so I will cover them there.

Verses 3-8 – Chapter 13 is a short chapter but it is a very important chapter. The verses are tightly woven and form a command about the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the month of Abib (Aviv) and being set-apart. Once again, Passover is not a “festival” but rather a preparation day for Unleavened Bread. Chapter 12:11 tells us how we are to keep Passover, that we should be ready to flee. Chapter 13 makes it clear the Unleavened Bread is the festival and it is to commemorate Yisra’el being brought out of Mitsrayim. What is the big deal about unleavened Bread?

Shemoth (Exodus) 14

Chapter 14 is a continuation of chapter 13. Follow the progression of place names:
1.) Ramses 2.) Goshen 3.) Sukkot 4.) Etham

  • Ramses – Child of the Sun((day));
  • Sukkot – booths (to dwell in booths (because we now know the moedim);
  • Etham – with them (in the pillar of cloud and pillar of fire) also Isa. 7:14

Verses 1-2 – Now, look at the progression that is taking place: before Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, opposite Ba’al Tsephon.

Verses 1-2 – This is the very first time in Scripture that we see a song of deliverance being sung to YHVH. In fact, this is the first time we see a song of any kind being sung to YHVH. If you look at the word for the verb “sang” this is the first time it is used in Scripture: H7891 – שׁוּר  שִׁיר  – shı̂yr  shûr – sheer, shoor

The second form being the original form, used in (1Sa_18:6); a primitive root (rather identical with H7788 through the idea of strolling minstrelsy); to sing: – behold [by mistake for H7789], sing (-er, -ing man, -ing woman).

Verses 1-3 – The Children of Yisra’el have now been on their journey for one month. Because they had to flee quickly, during the night of Passover/Unleavened Bread, they could not carry a large store of provisions. It is at about this time, between Elim and Sinai, that their provisions have been exhausted. Once again we see them grumbling: H3885 – לין / לוּן – lûn / lı̂yn – BDB Definition: 1) to lodge, stop over, pass the night, abide

Shemoth (Exodus) 17 — “Strengthen the weak”

Verse 1 – The first clue to this chapter is the word Rephidim: H7508 – רְפִידִים – rephı̂ydı̂ym – ref-ee-deem’ – Plural of the masculine of the same as H7507; ballusters; Rephidim, a place in the Desert: – Rephidim.

This definition tells us nothing of the meaning of the word. Let’s look to the BDB: H7508 – רפידים – rephı̂ydı̂ym – BDB Definition: Rephidim = “rests” or “stays” or “resting places” 1) a station of Israel in the wilderness between Egypt and Sinai. And why do you do you stop and rest? Because you are weak or tired: H7504 – רָפֶהrâpheh – raw-feh’ – From H7503; slack (in body or mind): – weak. In other words when we grow weak or slack, He prepares a place for us to rest and recuperate.

Shemoth (Exodus) 18

Verse 1 – Yithro = Re’uel =Mosheh’s father-in-law. There are 27 verses in Chapter 18 and the term father-in-law is mentioned thirteen times. Maybe this is trying to tell us something.

What do we know about Re’uel? He is the priest of Midyan and his name means “friend of El” (H7467). The term for father-in-law literally means “To give a daughter away” or “wife’s father”. Yithro taught Mosheh about sheep herding, Mosheh, upon seeing the burning bush, requested permission of Yithro to go back to Mitsrayim to get his brethren out of slavery. Consider the fact that at 80 years of age Mosheh could have been twice his father-in-law’s age and after herding sheep for 40 years Mosheh is now herding the sheep of Yisra’el for YHVH.

Verses 1-2 – This is the 11th stop for the Children of Yisra’el since their journey began 3 months ago. They departed Rephidim and have now arrived at the Wilderness of Sinai. We have discussed how the word for “wilderness” is “midbar” and the root word is “dabar” = word. “Midbar” can also mean mouth. Also, that the root for “Sinai” is “Sin” the name of the male moon god deity. Sinai can mean “thorny” and if we put the two words together we see that YHVH brought the Children of Yisra’el to Sinai to prick the hearts of Yisra’el with words from a thorny mouth or said another way YHVH brought the Children of Yisra’el to a “thorny place” to prick their hearts to receive Torah. ((I have still not completed the set of the new computer and do not have the “early semitic” font loaded into Open Office yet. Sorry.))

Shemoth (Exodus) 20 — The 10 Words of Our Bridegroom

Verse 1 – I will probably delve further into verse 1 than I should but it is so pivotal for everything that comes after it. “And Elohim spoke” this is not an empty statement. It does not say that Mosheh spoke or anyone else spoke but Elohim spoke. Now let’s look at the verb for “spoke”: H1696 – דָּבַר – dâbar – daw-bar’ – A primitive root; perhaps properly to arrange; but used figuratively (of words) to speak; rarely (in a destructive sense) to subdue: – answer, appoint, bid, command, commune, declare, destroy, give, name, promise, pronounce, rehearse, say, speak, be spokesman, subdue, talk, teach, tell, think, use [entreaties], utter, X well, X work.
