Bereshith (Genesis) 35

Lesson date: 3/24/5855AA

Verse 1 – Dwell = H3427 – יָשַׁב – yâshabyaw-shab‘ – to site down, dwell, to marry. It is easy to see that yashab means more than dwell. The true meaning behind yashab is to sit down at the feet of (in order to learn): Act 22:3  “I am indeed a Yehuḏite, having been born in Tarsos of Kilikia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamli’ĕl, having been instructed according to the exactness of the Torah of our fathers, being ardent for Elohim, as you all are today,

This is the full meaning of yashab and it is the root word for the Hebrew word “yeshiva” which means school. In essence YHVH told Ya’aqob “Return to My House (Beyt El) and sit down at my feet and I will teach you.” Continue reading Bereshith (Genesis) 35

Lesson date: 4/9/5855AA

Verse 1 – Once again a chapter referring to Yisra’el begins with the word “Yashab” which means “and he dwelt”. Remember, “yashab” is the root word for “Yeshiva” which is the Hebrew word for school with the implication that you sat at the feet of your teacher: Act 22:3  “I am indeed a Yehuḏite, having been born in Tarsos of Kilikia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamli’ĕl, having been instructed according to the exactness of the Torah of our fathers, being ardent for Elohim, as you all are today,

Another very interesting word, which may seem out of place, is the word for “sojourning” = magur – H4033 – which comes for “gur” – H1481 – which means to be a stranger. But how could they be a stranger in a land that was given to them by the Most High? Continue reading Bereshith (Genesis) 37

Lesson date: 09/../5858AA

A number of years ago I was reading in Exodus Chapter 1 and noticed that the names of the sons of Yisra’el were not in birth order and then it dawned on me that the Hebrew name for Exodus was Shemoth so, I began to wonder whether or not there was any particular meaning or significance for the names of the sons of Yisra’el being there. What else could I do but to translate the names to see if there was. Lo and behold, there was.

Chapter 38 of Bereshith is one of those chapters that if you do not look at the names of the “cast of characters” you miss the meaning or significance of the chapter. About 6 years ago, maybe longer, I was reading Chapter 38 and thought to myself, “This chapter is so out of place and has so little relevance to the story as a whole, why is it here, in this location”. That is when I remembered Shemoth 1. I know some people disagree with my breakdown of this chapter Continue reading Bereshith (Genesis) 38

Lesson date: 4/23/5855AA

Verse 1 – This verse begins by telling us some inside information. Once again we see the word “yarad” used for “to bring down”, which as we discussed can mean physically, spiritually or morally. Not only was Yoseph brought down to Egypt, the center of the “mystery religion” of its day with all of its pagan gods, but he was sold to Potiphar, which means (H6318) “belonging to the sun” an officer of pharoah (H6547) which means “great house”. So, not only was Yoseph taken down into the very center or hub of the mystery religion of his day but he was sold to the “Great House Belonging to the Sun”. ((Sunday perhaps.))

Now, let’s not forget who sold him into slavery, Yishma’elites, descendants of Yishma’el, son of Abraham and Hagar who also had 12 sons but who were outside the promise (Yishaq born of Sarah) and outside the covenant (circumcision). The Yishma’elites represent the Muslim world of today who claim the inheritance but don’t recognize neither the covenant nor the Messiah. In contrast, the modern church recognizes the Messiah, by a different name, but does not recognize the covenant. ((Gal. 3:27-29))

Lesson date: 4/23/5855AA

Verses 1-4 – The “cup-bearer” and the baker of Pharoah were placed into prison. We are not told what they did wrong but in the eyes of Pharoah they had “sinned against their master”. They were delivered to the captain of the guard and he placed them under the care of Yoseph, who now had authority over them. Instead of using or misusing his authority over them it says “and he served them.”

Mat 23:11  “But the greatest among you shall be your servant.

Mar 10:42  And יהושע, calling them near, said to them, “You know that those who think to rule the gentiles are masters over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.

Mar 10:43  “But it is not so among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant.

Mar 10:44  “And whoever wishes to be first among you, shall be servant of all.

Mar 10:45  “For even the Son of Aḏam did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Luk 22:26  “But not so with you, but let him who is greatest among you be as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves.

Luk 22:27  “For who is greater, the one who sits at the table, or the one who serves? Is it not the one who sits at the table? But I am in your midst as the One who serves.

Verses 1-7 – After the end of 2 years time. Remember, this is referring to the 2 years since the cup-bearer and chief baker were released for prison. Notice it was the chief baker, representing the “bread of life” that was put to death: Joh_6:33  “For the bread of Elohim is He who comes down out of the heaven and gives life to the world.”

Joh_6:35  And יהושע said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall not get hungry at all, and he who believes in Me shall not get thirsty at all.

Joh_6:48  “I am the bread of life.

Joh_6:51  “I am the living bread which came down out of the heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he shall live forever. And indeed, the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.”

Please notice it was the cup-bearer who was allowed to live so, that at a later date, he could redeem Yoseph.

Verse 1-3 – We do not know whether or not Ya’aqob had a prophetic vision that there was grain in Egypt, which I suspect, or something else occurred but he “saw” H7200 – Ra’ah – that there was grain in Egypt. Why were his sons just staring at each other? Were they afraid of leaving their families?

Amo 8:11  “See, days are coming,” declares the Master יהוה, “that I shall send a hunger in the land, not a hunger for bread, nor a thirst for water, but for hearing the Words of יהוה.

Amo 8:12  “And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east – they shall diligently search, seeking the Word of יהוה, but they shall not find it

Lesson date: 5/15/5855AA

Verse 1 – This is probably the end of the first year of the famine or the beginning of the second year. When we get to Chapter 45 we will see it is still only the second year of famine. Also, remember, the word for famine and plenty are similar and the only difference is the Hebrew letter “ayin” or eye. If we take our “eye” of of YHVH then we will only see according to the flesh. But if our eye is on YHVH we will “discern” according to the Spirit, rather than according to the flesh. Ithink that David saw this distinction: Psa 33:18  See, the eye of יהוה is on those fearing Him, On those waiting for His kindness,

Psa 33:19  To deliver their being from death, And to keep them alive during scarcity of food.

Lesson date: 5/22/5855AA

Verse 1 – Once again we see a type and shadow of our Messiah in Yoseph’s words: “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as they are able to bear,” shows us that the bountiful blessings that we receive, through the life, suffering, death and resurrection of our Messiah is beyond what we can receive. And following, “and put each man’s silver in the mouth of his sack.” Yoseph made the blessing to his brethren without cost . We have nothing to pay, nor could we because the price is too great and He made all of this available to us for free because He voluntarily paid the price for us. All we have to do is be obedient to His Commands.

Joh 14:15  “If you love Me, you shall guard My commands.
