Bereshith (Genesis) 5 — What is in a Name?

Lesson date: 11/26/5854AA

Verses 1-5 – Man (Adam) was created in the likeness of YHVH. Notice verse 3 that Sheth was in the likeness and image of Adam, not someone else.

Verses 6-31 – The genealogy of the house of Adam:

Adam = man, mankind
Sheth = substituted, compensated, appointed
Enosh = mortal man, incurable (this is used in the connotation of dying for an incurable condition)
Qeynan = sorrow, song of sorrow,
Mahalal’el = blessed or praised + El
*Yered = descent, to come down
**Hanok = dedicated, devoted to instruction/teaching
***Methushelah = “his death shall bring”
Lemek = to be low or depressed
Noah = comfort and rest

Bereshith (Genesis) 6 — In the Days of Noah

Lesson date: 11/26/5854AA

Verses 1-2 Looking at verses 1 and 2 there are multiple ways of translating them. One is that daughters of Qayin were beautiful and the sons of Sheth married them. Many people will read these verses this way because they are afraid to admit that it directly ties in to verse 4.  Another way of looking at verses 1 and 2 are that the angels saw how beautiful the women were and left heaven to take human wives. But do we have any supporting scripture for this point of view?

Jud 1:6  And the messengers who did not keep their own principality, but left their own dwelling, He has kept in everlasting shackles under darkness for the judgment of the great day.

1Pe 3:18  Because even Messiah once suffered for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to Elohim, having been put to death indeed in flesh but made alive in the Spirit,

1Pe 3:19  in which also He went and proclaimed unto the spirits in prison,

1Pe 3:20  who were disobedient at one time when the patience of Elohim waited in the days of Noaḥ, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight beings, were saved through water,

Bereshith (Genesis) 7 — “Come into the Ark” or “Walking on the Water”

Lesson date: 12/03/5854AA

Verse 1 –  “Come into the ark.” Doesn’t this sound like an invitation? That is because it was. It also has the tone that YHVH was in the ark waiting for Noah and his family to join YHVH. The word for “come” is: H935 – בּוא – bô’ – BDB Definition: 1) to go in, enter, come, go, come in 1a) (Qal) 1a1) to enter, come in 1a2) to come.

But this is not all. My favorite meaning for this word is “to be brought in” like a bridegroom would carry his bride across the threshold. In Ber. 6:4 it is used to show that the Sons of Elohim had sexual relations with the daughters of men: when the sons of Elohim came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. As I look at Bereshith 7:1 I see YHVH inviting His people to the wedding feast of the Lamb.

Rev 22:17  And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And he who hears, let him say, “Come!” And he who thirsts, come! And he who desires it, take the water of life without paying!

The word for “come” in Greek used Ber. 7:1 is: G1525 – εἰσέρχομαι – eiserchomai – ice-er’-khom-ahee – From G1519 and G2064; to enter (literally or figuratively): – X arise, come (in, into), enter in (-to), go in (through).

The word used for “Come” in Hazon 22:17 is G2064 without the prefix G1519

Did you ask yourself why He extended this invitation to just 8 people? “because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation.”

Bereshith (Genesis) 8 — “The Mark”

Lesson date: 12/10/5854AA

Verse 1 – How important is this one verse? Wow! “And Elohim remembered Noah” But what does this mean?  H2142 – זָכַר – zâkar – zaw-kar’ – A primitive root; properly to mark (so as to be recognized), that is, to remember; by implication to mention;

Isa 49:16  “See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls are always before Me.

Psa 111:4  He has made His wonders to be remembered; יהוה shows favour and is compassionate.

Psa 111:5  He has given food to those who fear Him; He remembers His covenant forever.

It is better translated mindful.

Bereshith (Genesis) 9 — “I have given you all”

Lesson date: 12/17/5854AA

Verse 1 – “Be fruitful” is used in conjunction with (H853) /“blessed”.

Psa 128:3  Let your wife be As a fruit-bearing vine within your house, Your sons like olive plants all around your table.

Psa 128:4  Look, so shall the man be blessed Who fears יהוה.

Verse 2- “The fear of you and the dread of you” shows that before the flood, since nothing ate meat, there was no fear of man nor animal innate in animals until after the flood. In Bereshith 1:29 He gives man all the green trees and plants for food.

Verse 3-4 – (Get ready to have your socks blown away. Just a warning to wear shoes and to be careful where you tread.))

Bereshith (Genesis) 11 — “One language and one speech”

Lesson date: 12/24/5854AA

Verse 1 – Having one language and one speech sounds great. Think of how easy it would be to travel to foreign lands and to be understood by everyone. It would certainly put Berlitz and Rosetta Stone out of business. In fact, the Rosetta Stone was on the “badge” we wore at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Cal. while I was there, shortly after the Earth cooled and dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Remember too, one of the attributes given to Joseph was that he spoke all 70 languages of the Earth.

Verse 2 – It sounds confusing “as they set out for the East” but it is just the relative position of the writer. Moshe was west of the land of Eden/Mt. Ararat so he is giving a relative point: H6924 – קדמה / קדם – qedem / qêdmâh – BDB Definition: 1) east, antiquity, front, that which is before, aforetime (noun masculine) 1a) front, from the front or east, in front, mount of the East

Verse 3 – “And they had brick for stone”. What do bricks symbolize? Man’s creation, also slavery.

Bereshith (Genesis) 12

Lesson date: 13/01/5854AA

Verse 1 – לֶךְ־לְךָ – leḵ leḵa. This is a Hebrew contraction of two words. The first Lek is for H1980 – הָלַךְ – hâlak – haw-lak’ – Akin to H3212; a primitive root; to walk (in a great variety of applications, literally and figuratively): and the second leka is lek plus attah from attah – Strong’s H859 – H859 – אַתֵּנָּה –  אַתֵּנָה –  אַתֶּן –  אַתֶּם אַתִּי- אַת – אַתָּ – אַתָּה  – ‘attâh ‘attâ ‘ath ‘attı̂y ‘attem ‘atten ‘attênâh ‘attênnâh – at-taw’ at-taw’ at-tee’ at-tem’ at-ten’ – A primitive pronoun of the second person; thou and thee, or (plural) ye and you: – thee, thou, ye, you. In order to translate this into the modern standardized Texas dialect we would say, “Y’all go on and git on outta hyunh”. Anyway, halak is used twice and together so it must be important for us to focus on halak.

E         = behold

l         = shepherd’s staff, authority

k         = palm, open hand, greeting

“Behold the sign of authority(shepherd’s staff/nail scarred hands) in His hand”

All joking aside this is an imperative command form being used. This is not a suggestion to be done at some future date but is said in an imperative voice which could be expressed in English, “Now, get up and get out of here”. Continue reading Bereshith (Genesis) 12

Bereshith (Genesis) 13 — Living by faith, not sight

Lesson date: 13/08/5854AA

It was 46 years ago that I first studied Egyptian Arabic. It seems like yesterday. One of the peculiarities of Egyptian is that the Nile River flows from South to North so, if you go down the river in a boat you are actually ascending on a map from South to North. Here in the US we would something like “Down South” or “Up North”, this doesn’t work in this part of the world. The southern border of Israel is the Negeb(v) desert and the southern most point is the River of Egypt or, the Brook of Egypt or as it is known today as Wadi El ‘Arish.

Verses 1-3 – Here we see the description of Abram’s travel sound a little confusing but actually it is correct. Abram has just left the Fortress of On in the Land of Goshen, where his descendants would one day find sanctuary and is now moving northward into the Negeb(v).
