Verses 1-2 – This is the very first time in Scripture that we see a song of deliverance being sung to YHVH. In fact, this is the first time we see a song of any kind being sung to YHVH. If you look at the word for the verb “sang” this is the first time it is used in Scripture: H7891 – שׁוּר  שִׁיר  – shı̂yr  shûr – sheer, shoor

The second form being the original form, used in (1Sa_18:6); a primitive root (rather identical with H7788 through the idea of strolling minstrelsy); to sing: – behold [by mistake for H7789], sing (-er, -ing man, -ing woman).

Verse 1 – The first clue to this chapter is the word Rephidim: H7508 – רְפִידִים – rephı̂ydı̂ym – ref-ee-deem’ – Plural of the masculine of the same as H7507; ballusters; Rephidim, a place in the Desert: – Rephidim.

This definition tells us nothing of the meaning of the word. Let’s look to the BDB: H7508 – רפידים – rephı̂ydı̂ym – BDB Definition: Rephidim = “rests” or “stays” or “resting places” 1) a station of Israel in the wilderness between Egypt and Sinai. And why do you do you stop and rest? Because you are weak or tired: H7504 – רָפֶה – râpheh – raw-feh’ – From H7503; slack (in body or mind): – weak. In other words when we grow weak or slack, He prepares a place for us to rest and recuperate.

Verse 1 – Yithro = Re’uel =Mosheh’s father-in-law. There are 27 verses in Chapter 18 and the term father-in-law is mentioned thirteen times. Maybe this is trying to tell us something.

What do we know about Re’uel? He is the priest of Midyan and his name means “friend of El” (H7467). The term for father-in-law literally means “To give a daughter away” or “wife’s father”. Yithro taught Mosheh about sheep herding, Mosheh, upon seeing the burning bush, requested permission of Yithro to go back to Mitsrayim to get his brethren out of slavery. Consider the fact that at 80 years of age Mosheh could have been twice his father-in-law’s age and after herding sheep for 40 years Mosheh is now herding the sheep of Yisra’el for YHVH.

Verses 1-2 – This is the 11^th stop for the Children of Yisra’el since their journey began 3 months ago. They departed Rephidim and have now arrived at the Wilderness of Sinai. We have discussed how the word for “wilderness” is “midbar” and the root word is “dabar” = word. “Midbar” can also mean mouth. Also, that the root for “Sinai” is “Sin” the name of the male moon god deity. Sinai can mean “thorny” and if we put the two words together we see that YHVH brought the Children of Yisra’el to Sinai to prick the hearts of Yisra’el with words from a thorny mouth or said another way YHVH brought the Children of Yisra’el to a “thorny place” to prick their hearts to receive Torah. Verse 1 – I will probably delve further into verse 1 than I should but it is so pivotal for everything that comes after it. “And Elohim spoke” this is not an empty statement. It does not say that Mosheh spoke or anyone else spoke but Elohim spoke. Now let’s look at the verb for “spoke”: H1696 – דָּבַר – dâbar – daw-bar’ – A primitive root; perhaps properly to arrange; but used figuratively (of words) to speak; rarely (in a destructive sense) to subdue: – answer, appoint, bid, command, commune, declare, destroy, give, name, promise, pronounce, rehearse, say, speak, be spokesman, subdue, talk, teach, tell, think, use [entreaties], utter, X well, X work.

Verse 1 – We see in the beginning of this chapter that it is a direct continuation of Chapter 20 verse 21. The Children of Yisra’el expressed their fear of hearing the voice of Elohim and moved away from hearing His Voice “but Moshe drew near the thick darkness where Elohim was.” 

Jas_4:8 Draw near to Elohim and He shall draw near to you. Cleanse hands, sinners. And cleanse the hearts, you double-minded!

Mishpat(im) – H4941 – Judgement(s), right-rulings: Psa 97:2 Clouds and darkness all around Him, Righteousness and right-ruling are the foundation of His throne. David perfectly describes what Mosheh saw.

The legislative bodies in our nation approve approximately 150,000 new laws every year but in our Creator’s Kingdom the same laws have been in effect since time began. Verses 1-4 – These verses expound on the 8^th and 10^th Words. We see a difference between the theft of a sheep and an ox. Why?

If a thief is found stealing at night and killed there is no sin against the person who killed him but, if the sun comes up and the thief is killed by the homeowner then there is sin. This is expounding on the 6^th Word. We see the contrast between light and darkness, knowledge and truth as the opposite of paganism. Preface: I think all of you know that as of December 2013 I began praying that YHVH would take the Greek out of my life. I am not talking about the language, which I still struggle through, but rather the mindset. Everything in our life today is taught to us from the Greek point of view, how we view time, many of our words, how we use science as a standard of judgment, law is rooted in Greek philosophy, etc. I have been struggling to comprehend a greater portion or position in Hebrew above and beyond my Greek training. Greek teaches us that if we can prove a matter scientifically, mathematically or empirically it must be true or real. It has occurred to me over the last few months that the proper perspective to view Hebrew is as an art form rather than a combination of algorithms that somehow converge at a single point to convey meaning. Verse 1-2 – These verse is making it clear that the covenant is not just with the Tribe of Levi but all of Yisra’el. Not only is Mosheh instructing to bring Aharon, Nadab and Abihu but the 70 elders of Yisra’el. Please note that it is not an accident that the number of elders is 70 but is in fact Scriptural and represents the entirety of Yisra’el: Gen 46:27 And the sons of Yosěph who were born to him in Mitsrayim were two beings. All the beings of the house of Ya‛aqoḇ who went to Mitsrayim were seventy.
