Num 20:24 “Aharon is to be gathered to his people, for he is not to enter the land which I have given to the children of Yisra’ĕl, because you rebelled against My mouth at the water of Meribah.
What was the sin that Mosheh committed that prevented he and Aharon from entering the Promised Land? Disobedience. Num 20:8 “Take the rod and assemble the congregation, you and your brother Aharon. And you shall speak to the rock before their eyes, and it shall give its water. And you shall bring water for them out of the rock and give drink to the congregation and their livestock.”
But what did Mosheh do in his anger?
Num 20:11 Then Mosheh lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod. And much water came out, and the congregation and their livestock drank.
Num 20:12 But יהוה spoke to Mosheh and to Aharon, “Because you did not believe Me, to set Me apart in the eyes of the children of Yisra’ĕl, therefore you do not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.”
Moshe’s sin was disobedience but it was on a huge spiritual level. The Rock was to represent Yeshua’s ministry and it has already been struck once: Exo 17:6 “See, I am standing before you there on the rock in Horĕb. And you shall smite the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people shall drink.” And Mosheh did so before the eyes of the elders of Yisra’ĕl.
Yeshua would only be struck (die) once for His people: Heb 6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Set-apart Spirit,
Heb 6:5 and have tasted the good Word of Elohim and the powers of the age to come,
Heb 6:6 and fall away, to renew them again to repentance – having impaled for themselves the Son of Elohim again, and put Him to open shame.
1Co 10:4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed, and the Rock was Messiah.
Isa 53:4 Truly, He has borne our sicknesses and carried our pains. Yet we reckoned Him stricken, smitten by Elohim, and afflicted.
The writer of Hebrews makes it clear that Yeshua will only die once for His people, Sha’ul makes it clear that Yeshua was the Rock and Isaiah makes it clear that the association between sticken and dying. Look at the very next verse: Isa 53:5 But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our crookednesses. The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.
But Mosheh struck the Rock, not Aharon. Why was Aharon not allowed to go into the Promised Land? What picture does this give us? That Torah(Mosheh) and the priesthood(Aharon) are unable to save us without the Rock (Messiah). Go back to our discussion of the feasts and we see that Yeshua was struck on Passover and Redeemed us. He will not be struck again. Instead we will speak (account) to Messiah in the judgment for His Atonement. Like the children of Yisra’el, who were redeemed out of Mitzrayim but it was another 42 years before they reached the Promised Land.
Why is the location significant in verse 1?
After 42 years, two in Paran and then 40 for refusing to go in and occupy the Promised Land when the were told to do so, they are not opposite of Yeriho. Yeriho was filled with the descendants of the Amorites, an amoral (Amorite) people: Gen 15:16 “Then, in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the crookedness of the Amorites is not yet complete.”
Verse 5 – What a mighty distinction is spoken about Mosheh: “And Mosheh the servant of יהוה “
H5650 – עֶבֶד – ‛ebed – eh’-bed – From H5647; a servant: – X bondage, bondman, [bond-] servant, (man-) servant.
O = watching, seeing
b = tent, house
d = tent door
“The one who watches over the door of the House.” Mat 24:43 “And know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into.
Verse 6 – “And He buried him” shows us that whoever buried Mosheh did so under the authority of YHVH’s Name: Jud 1:9 But Mika’ĕl the chief messenger, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Mosheh, presumed not to bring against him a blasphemous accusation, but said, “יהוה rebuke you!” ((Where else do we see this rebuke?)) Zec 3:1 And he showed me Yehoshua the high priest standing before the messenger of יהוה, and Satan standing at his right hand to be an adversary to him.
Zec 3:2 And יהוה said to Satan, “יהוה rebuke you, Satan! יהוה who has chosen Yerushalayim rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?”
Zec 3:3 And Yehoshua was dressed in filthy garments, and was standing before the messenger.
((Want to guess which messenger he standing in front of?))
Mika’el, the Prince of Yisra’el: Dan 10:13 “But the head of the rule of Persia withstood me twenty-one days. And see, Miḵa’ĕl, one of the chief heads, came to help me, for I had been left alone there with the sovereigns of Persia.
Dan 10:21 “But let me declare to you what is written in the Scripture of Truth, and there is no one supporting me against these, except Miḵa’ĕl your head.
Dan_12:1 “Now at that time Miḵa’ĕl shall stand up, the great head who is standing over the sons of your people. And there shall be a time of distress, such as never was since there was a nation, until that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, every one who is found written in the book,
Deu 34:10 And since then no prophet has arisen in Yisra’ĕl like Mosheh, whom יהוה knew face to face,
We have talked about this idiom before. Mosheh never saw YHVH’s face only His hindparts: Exo 33:20 But He said, “You are unable to see My face, for no man does see Me and live.”
Exo 33:21 And יהוה said, “See, there is a place with Me! And you shall stand on the rock.
Exo 33:22 “And it shall be, while My esteem passes by, that I shall put you in the cleft of the rock and cover you with My hand while I pass by.
Exo 33:23 “Then I shall take away My hand and you shall see My back, but My face shall not be seen.”
Not until Yeshua came was there anyone who could fulfill the role of Mosheh: Deu_18:18 ‘I shall raise up for them a Prophet like you out of the midst of their brothers. And I shall put My Words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.

Last night, as I was going through this chapter one more time thinking, “What else can be new?” I hunted and hunted and next I thought, “Hey, I’m getting tired so I need to go to bed.” Instead I fell asleep in my chair almost immediately. I woke up thinking “Wow that was sudden.” Then, when I awoke this morning and began looking at the last of 33 and the beginning of 34 that I had missed something or rather probably a lot of somethings:
Genesis Bereshith In the beginning
Exodus Shemoth Names (As in the names of the sons of Yisra’el)
Leviticus Wayyiqra And He called out
Numbers Bemidbar In the wilderness (Actually: the place of words)
Deuteronomy Debarim Words
In the beginning, the Names that He called out in the wilderness and their words. Does it make sense or is it just me?
Another thing I wanted to bring out is about Shi’mon. Why wasn’t he in the blessing? Here is what his father had to say, notice he is not alone: Gen 49:5 “Shim‛on and Lěwi are brothers, their weapons are implements of violence.
Gen 49:6 “Let my being not enter their council, let my esteem not be united to their assembly; because they killed a man in their displeasure, and they lamed an ox in pleasure. ((Possibly the rape of Dinah))
Gen 49:7 “Cursed be their displeasure for it is fierce, and their wrath for it is cruel! I divide them in Ya‛aqoḇ and scatter them in Yisra’ěl. ((But look what happens with Pinehas in Bemidbar 25:5-7))
Shi’mon and Levi were, for the lack of a better word, passionate about what they believed and it lead to many men being killed. They were fighters and this is not bad but with the examples in Torah we see that the line of Levi is passionate about Yah’s Word and will draw a sword or spear and kill those who do not listen to Yah’s Word. I believe the real reason that Shi’mon is not mentioned hear is to awaken us to the fact that: It is time to Listen (Shi’mon) to YHVH’s Word (TORAH)! Just a thought.
Verse 1-4 – Like I mentioned last night, for me Chapter 34 is like reading the obituary of a truly loved family member. It is sad because we lose Mosheh but now we have the Word to carry with us. Go back to Bemidbar 20 and reread what happened. Now, think about what was lost by striking the Rock (Yeshu’a). Had Mosheh not struck the Rock with his staff he would have been the perfect illustration of: His words lead us to the Rock. A very beautiful message. Sha’ul saw it: 1Co 10:2 and all were immersed into Mosheh in the cloud and in the sea,
1Co 10:3 and all ate the same spiritual food,
1Co 10:4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed, and the Rock was Messiah.
Had Mosheh not struck the Rock would things have changed? Yes, I think so, because the example is: Listen (Shi’mon) to the Rock, instead of striking the Rock. Would it have changed history possibly. Would it have changed YHVH’s plan? No! That is forever recorded in Bereshith 1:1 word 1 and will always testify against us. Instead of listening to Yeshu’a they struck Him.
Something happened on Pisgah, what? I do not know. I think what happened was that Mosheh was “raised” up or maybe YHVH showed him a panoramic display of the Promised Land. Why do I say that? It is too far from east of the Jordan River to see the Mediterranean Sea. From where Mosheh is it is impossible to see over 60 miles to the sea or even further to the Negeb because of the curvature of the Earth. So something miraculous took place that day on that mountain just like something miraculous would take place on another mountain in the future: Mat 17:2 and He was transformed before them, and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as the light.
Mat 17:3 And see, Mosheh and Ěliyahu appeared to them, talking with Him.
Mat 17:4 And Kěpha answering, said to יהושע, “Master, it is good for us to be here. If You wish, let us make here three booths: one for You, one for Mosheh, and one for Ěliyahu.”
Mosheh leads us to the Rock, Yeshu’a. So, why was Eliyahu there? Rev_19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “See, do not do it! I am your fellow servant, and of your brothers who possess the witness of יהושע. Worship Elohim! For the witness of יהושע is the spirit of prophecy.”
Mosheh had brought the Children of Yisra’el right up to the point of entry into the Promised Land but, it is Yehoshua (Yehovah’s Salvation) that actually brings us, oops, them into the Promised Land. Do you see why Sha’ul declared this: Gal_3:24 Therefore the Torah became our trainer unto Messiah, in order to be declared right by belief.
Gal_3:25 And after belief has come, we are no longer under a trainer.
Gal 3:26 For you are all sons of Elohim through belief in Messiah יהושע.
Gal 3:27 For as many of you as were immersed into Messiah have put on Messiah.
Gal 3:28 There is not Yehuḏi nor Greek, there is not slave nor free, there is not male and female, for you are all one in Messiah יהושע.
Gal 3:29 And if you are of Messiah, then you are seed of Aḇraham, and heirs according to promise.
We are no longer under the trainer. What is the curse of Torah? Death. We are no longer under the curse of eternal death or separation from YHVH. Yeshu’a made it possible to bring everlasting life into the equation. We are of the Seed of Abraham: Gal 3:15 Brothers, as a man I say it: a covenant, even though it is man’s, yet if it is confirmed, no one sets it aside, or adds to it.
Gal 3:16 But the promises were spoken to Aḇraham, and to his Seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Messiah.
There is only one covenant that brings salvation and that is the covenant made with Abraham and recorded by Mosheh. Otherwise you are wasting your time. You might as well do as the Scripture says and go out and eat, drink and be merry. I’m sorry if this sounds like a sermon, it’s not. It is what I need to hear, what I need to realize in my life what I need to grasp from the Word in my life.
Mosheh was the “trainer” of Yisra’el: Pro 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he turns not away from it.
Train up – H2596 –חנך – -chânak – BDB Definition: 1) to train, dedicate, inaugurate
I’m sure that it is just a coincidence that Hanak is the root verb for Hanok who is mentioned in the Book of Yehudah, Yeshu’a’s half brother: Jud 1:8 In the same way, indeed, these dreamers defile the flesh, and reject authority, and speak evil of esteemed ones.
Jud 1:9 But Miḵa’ěl the chief messenger, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Mosheh, presumed not to bring against him a blasphemous accusation, but said, “יהוה rebuke you!”
Jud 1:14 And Ḥanoḵ, the seventh from Aḏam, also prophesied of these, saying, “See, יהוה comes with His myriads of set-apart ones,
Jud 1:15 to execute judgment on all, to punish all who are wicked among them concerning all their wicked works which they have committed in a wicked way, and concerning all the harsh words which wicked sinners have spoken against Him.”
Hanak is also the root verb in both Hebrew and Aramaic for the word Hanukkah; dedication. The Feast of Dedication. Should we keep the Feast of Dedication? Yes? No? We already do. It is called Sukkot or The Feasts of Tabernacles, the last day of Sukkot, when the temple was dedicated (Hanak) by Shelomoh: 1Ki 8:65 And Shelomoh at that time performed the Festival, and all Yisra’ěl with him, a great assembly from the entrance of Ḥamath to the wadi of Mitsrayim, before יהוה our Elohim, seven days and seven days – fourteen days.
And, he sent them away on the 8th (actually it was the 15th day) of Sukkot.
I’m sure you are thinking “What does any of this has to do with Debarim 34?” These are the things that I think of when I read it. Weird, huh?
Verse 5 – Mosheh the servant. What a testimony. The Hebrew word for servant is H5650 – ‘ebed – servant, slave, bondservant. My family came to America from England in 1641 as slaves and I want to continue by being a slave or servant to YHVH instead of myself, to the world: Lev 25:55 ‘Because the children of Yisra’ěl are servants to Me, they are My servants whom I brought out of the land of Mitsrayim. I am יהוה your Elohim.
O ayin eye, to see, to watch, one who sees knowledge
b bet tent, house, family
d dalet door, door of the tent, to move back and forth
The one who Watches at the Door of the Tent (House of Elohim). I want to be that one.
Some people say that Mosheh failed because he did not get to go into the Promised Land but that is a lie. He led us right up to the River Yarden and we had to cross over (‘iybri) by faith and follow Yehoshu’a, Yehovah’s Salvation, H3444.
Verse 6 – Through the guise or delegated authority, or agency, to Gabriel, YHVH’s servant, YHVH buried Mosheh rather than let men do so. It was important that no man would know where Mosheh was buried so that that knowledge could not be used by Hasatan to mislead or deceive Yah’s people. Look at Kepha’s example once again: Mat 17:4 And Kěpha answering, said to יהושע, “Master, it is good for us to be here. If You wish, let us make here three booths: one for You, one for Mosheh, and one for Ěliyahu.”
Verse 7-12 – Mosheh was 120 years young when he died. He still had perfect eyesight and the strength and endurance of a young man. Wow! I am no Mosheh. He had laid hands on Yehoshu’a who received a part of, not all, of the spirit of YHVH, the Spirit of Chochmah, Wisdom.
Look at Verse 12, Mosheh did “fearsome” deeds in the Name of YHVH. Now, look at the opposite of that: Mat 7:22 “Many shall say to Me in that day, ‘Master, Master, have we not prophesied in Your Name, and cast out demons in Your Name, and done many mighty works in Your Name?’
Mat 7:23 “And then I shall declare to them, ‘I never knew you, depart from Me, you who work lawlessness!’ ((Torahlessness)
