Debarim (Deuteronomy) 33 — Man of Elohim

Lesson date: 10/21/5854AA

Verse 1 – “the man of Elohim” – this is the only time that this phrase is used in Torah and it is not used by Mosheh but rather by Yehoshua (Joshua) about Mosheh. Please notice where Yehoshua uses it again:

Jos 14:6  And the children of Yehudah came to Yehoshua in Gilgal, and Kalĕḇ son of Yephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know the word which יהוה said to Mosheh the man of Elohim concerning you and me in Qaḏĕsh Barnĕa.

What is the standard by which a man ((or woman)) is called by Elohim? Interestingly we find it in the B’rit Hadasha from no less than Sha’ul:  1Ti 6:11  But you, O man of Elohim, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, reverence, belief, love, endurance, meekness.

1Ti 6:12  Fight the good fight of the belief, lay hold on everlasting life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession before many witnesses.

2Ti 3:16  All Scripture is breathed by Elohim and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for setting straight, for instruction in righteousness,

2Ti 3:17  that the man of Elohim might be fitted, equipped for every good work.

The phrase is used several times in the Tanakh to refer to prophets and even David: Neh 12:24  And the heads of the Lĕwites were Ḥashaḇyah, Shĕrĕḇyah, and Yĕshua son of Qaḏmi’ĕl, with their brothers opposite them, to praise, to give thanks, watch opposite watch, according to the command of Dawiḏ the man of Elohim.

What did this “Man of Elohim” do? He blesses Yisra’el – – וְּזאֹת הַבְּרָכָה – Wezot haBeraah’ – “And this is the blessing”. Unfortunately, in today’s world we have a poor understanding of the word blessing: H1293 – בְּרָכָה – berâkâh – ber-aw-kaw’ – From H1288; benediction; by implication prosperity: – blessing, liberal, pool, present.

Even Strong’s definition of blessing doesn’t really help. The full meaning of the word is “to bow in respect while presenting a gift.”

b         = tent floor plan, house

r         = head, leader

k         = open hand

e         = behold, reveal, revelation

“The head (Elohim) of the house has extended His open hand. Behold!”

 יברכך יהוה וישׁמרך׃ Num 6:24

יאר יהוה פניו אליך ויחנך׃ Num 6:25

  ישׂא יהוה פניו אליך וישׂם לך שׁלום׃ Num 6:26

Num 6:24  “יהוה bless you and guard you;

Num 6:25  יהוה make His face shine upon you, and show favour to you;

Num 6:26  יהוה lift up His face upon you, and give you peace.”

What are the characteristics of the blessing?

  1. Bless : H1288 – בָּרַךְ – bârak – baw-rak’ – A primitive root; to kneel; by implication to bless God (as an act of adoration), and (vice-versa) man (as a benefit);
  2. Guard/Keep : H8104 – שָׁמַר – shâmar – shaw-mar’ – A primitive root; properly to hedge about (as with thorns), that is, guard; generally to protect, attend to, etc.: – beware, be circumspect, take heed (to self), keep (-er, self), mark,
  3. Face : H6440 – פָּנִים – pânı̂ym – paw-neem’ – Plural (but always used as a singular) of an unused noun (פָּנֶה pâneh, paw-neh’; from 6437); the face (as the part that turns);
  4. Shine : H215 – אוֹר – ‘ôr – ore – A primitive root; to be (causatively make) luminous (literally and metaphorically): – X break of day, glorious, kindle, (be, en-, give, show) light (-en, -ened), set on fire, shine.
  5. Favor : H2603 – חָנַן – chânan – khaw-nan’ – A primitive root (compare H2583); properly to bend or stoop in kindness to an inferior; to favor, bestow; causatively to implore (that is, move to favor by petition):
  6. Lift up : H5375 – נָסָה נָשָׂא – nâśâ’  nâsâh – naw-saw’, naw-saw’ – A primitive root; to lift, in a great variety of applications, literally and figuratively, absolutely and relatively: – accept, advance, arise, help, high, hold up, honourable (+ man), lade, lay, lift (self) up, lofty, marry, magnify, X needs, obtain, pardon, raise (up), receive, regard, respect, set (up). ((I editted many of the meanings out for brevity.))
  7. Give : H7760 – שִׂים שׂוּם – śûm  śı̂ym – soom, seem – A primitive root; to put (used in a great variety of applications, literally, figuratively, inferentially and elliptically):  X any wise, appoint, bring, call [a name],  convey, dispose, do, get, give, ((Once again I editted many of the meanings out for brevity.))
  8. Peace : H7965 – שָׁלֹם שָׁלוֹם – shâlôm  shâlôm – shaw-lome’, shaw-lome’ – From H7999; safe, that is, (figuratively) well, happy, friendly; also (abstractly) welfare, that is, health, prosperity, peace: completeness

Modern English:

YHVH shall kneel down and hug you in an act of adoration ((Like a parent does their child)) and to put a hedge of protection around you ((Like He did for Job.))

YHVH shall light up His being and bathe you in His Light ((Like He did Mosheh)) and will bend down and bestow His Gift ((Yeshua)) upon you,

YHVH will lift you up ((Like a proud parent or husband)) and raise up His Being to look at you and call you by name((*)) to bestow upon you happiness, completeness and peace.

((*)) = Rev_2:17  “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies. To him who overcomes I shall give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I shall give him a white stone, and on the stone a renewed Name written which no one knows except him who receives it.”

((How do we bless YHVH?))

Verse 2 – “at His right hand a law of fire” –  H3225 – ימין – yâmı̂yn – BDB Definition: 1) right, right hand, right side

H799 – אשׁדּת – ‘eshdâth – BDB Definition: 1) fiery law, fire of a law, fire was a law (meaning uncertain)

Please note a couple of things about the word above. First, ‘eshdath is a compound word that comes from H784 and H1881:

H784 – אֵשׁ – ‘êsh– aysh – A primitive word; fire (literally or figuratively): – burning, fiery, fire, flaming, hot.

H1881 – דָּת – dâth – dawth – Of uncertain (perhaps foreign) derivation; a royal edict or statute: – commandment, commission, decree, law, manner. ((This word – dath – is used 20 times in Scripture: one time in Ezra and 19 times in Esther which leads me to believe that it is not of Aramaic origin but of Egyptian origin otherwise Mosheh/Joshua would not have known it.))

The second thing I want you to notice about the definition of ‘eshdath above is, it says that the “meaning is uncertain.”

Who is at the Right Hand of Elohim? Yeshua! What did Yeshua say about this? Luk 12:49  “I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!

Act 2:3  And there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and settled on each one of them.

((The word used here for fire is G4442 – pur – the same word used in the ABP+ in Genesis 15:17 below))

Fire is an essential part of the covenant going back to the very beginning of the covenant with Abraham: Gen 15:17  And it came to be, when the sun went down and it was dark, that see, a smoking oven and a burning torch passing between those pieces.

Burning = H784

Exo 12:8  ‘And they shall eat the flesh on that night, roasted in fire – with unleavened bread and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.

Without fire there is no sacrifice.

Psa 18:6  In my distress I called upon יהוה, And to my Elohim I cried; He heard my voice from His Hĕkal, And my cry went before Him, into His ears.

Psa 18:7  And the earth shook and trembled; Even the foundations of the mountains were troubled And they shook, because He was wroth.

Psa 18:8  Smoke went up from His nostrils, And consuming fire from His mouth; Coals were kindled by it.

Why is it a Law of Fire? Because judgment is by fire. Jer 5:14  Therefore thus said יהוה Elohim of hosts, “Because you speak this word, see, I am making My words in your mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

Rev 11:4  These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that are standing before the Elohim of the earth.

Rev 11:5  And if anyone wishes to harm them, fire comes out from their mouth and consumes their enemies. And if anyone wishes to harm them, he has to be killed in that way.

Verse 3 – This is perhaps one of the most beautiful promises in the Scripture: Deu 33:3  Indeed, He loves the peoples, all His set-apart ones are in Your hand. And they, they sat down at Your feet, receiving Your Words.

Who is set-apart? 1Th 4:3  For this is the desire of Elohim: your set-apartness! – that you should abstain from whoring,

1Th 4:4  that each one of you should know how to possess his own vessel in set-apartness and respect,

1Th 4:5  not in passion of lust, like the gentiles who do not know Elohim,

1Th 4:6  not to overstep and take advantage of his brother in this matter, because the Master is the revenger of all such, as we indeed said to you before and earnestly warned.

1Th 4:7  For Elohim did not call us to uncleanness, but in set-apartness.

What is set-apart? Gen 2:3  And Elohim blessed the seventh day and set it apart, because on it He rested from all His work which Elohim in creating had made.

Lev 23:2  “Speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl, and say to them, ‘The appointed times of יהוה, which you are to proclaim as set-apart gatherings, My appointed times, are these:

Lev 23:3  ‘Six days work is done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, a set-apart gathering. You do no work, it is a Sabbath to יהוה in all your dwellings.

Lev 23:4  ‘These are the appointed times of יהוה, set-apart gatherings which you are to proclaim at their appointed times.

Exo 23:14  “Three times in the year you are to observe a festival to Me:

Verse 3 – Part B – “sat down” = H8497 – תָּכָה – tâkâh – taw-kaw’ – A primitive root; to strew, that is, encamp: – sit down.

Think of that. Can you imagine us encamping at His feet and He will explain all of Torah to us like it should be known. WOW! Now look at this: Joh 1:14  And the Word became flesh and pitched His tent among us, and we saw His esteem, esteem as of an only brought-forth of a father, complete in favour and truth.

“Pitched His tent” = G4637 – σκηνόω – skēnoō – skay-no’-o – From G4636; to tent or encamp, that is, (figuratively) to occupy (as a mansion) or (specifically) to reside (as God did in the Tabernacle of old, a symbol fo protection and communion): – dwell.

“Receiving” = H5375 ((G1209 in the ABP+ and also the KJV+ B’rit Hadasha))נָסָה  נָשָׂא – nâśâ’  nâsâh – naw-saw’, naw-saw’ – A primitive root; to lift, in a great variety of applications, literally and figuratively, absolutely and relatively: – arise, (able to, [armour], suffer to) bear (-er, up), marry  ((shortened for brevity)).

1Sa 16:21  And Dawid came to Sha’ul and stood before him. And he loved him greatly, and he became his armour-bearer. ((H5375))

Eph 6:12  Because we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against authorities, against the world-rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual matters of wickedness in the heavenlies.

Eph 6:13  Because of this, take up the complete armour of Elohim, so that you have power to withstand in the wicked day, and having done all, to stand.

Eph 6:14  Stand, then, having girded your waist with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

Eph 6:15  and having fitted your feet with the preparation of the Good News of peace;

Eph 6:16  above all, having taken up the shield of belief with which you shall have power to quench all the burning arrows of the wicked one.

Eph 6:17  Take ((G1209)) also the helmet of deliverance, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of Elohim,

Verse 4 – Inheritance = H4181 – מוֹרָשָׁה – môrâshâh – mo-raw-shaw’ -Feminine of H4180; a possession: – heritage, inheritance, possession. What greater interitance is there to be had than the Word of Elohim? The Greek word in use here is G2817 and where do we find it in the B’rit Hadasha? Mat 21:37  “And at last he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They shall respect my son.’

Mat 21:38  “But when the farmers saw the son, they said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and let us possess his inheritance.’

Mat 21:39  “And they took him, and threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.

Everyone would love to inherit a great fortune and we have, the Word of Elohim, Torah, is our inheritance.

Assembly – H6952 – קְהִלָּה – qehillâh – keh-hil-law’ – From H6950; an assemblage: – assembly, congregation. ((What is H6950? Qahal, us.))

Jacob – H3290- יַעֲקֹב – ya‛ăqôb – yah-ak-obe’ – From H6117; heel catcher (that is, supplanter); Jaakob, the Israelitish patriarch: – Jacob. ((Get it? Ya’aqob means to grab the heel or to take the inheritance of…))

Gen 27:36  And Ěsaw said, “Was his name, then, called Yaʽaqoḇ? For he has caught me by the heel these two times. He took my birthright, and see, now he has taken my blessing!” And he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”

Hos 12:3  He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and in his strength he strove with Elohim.

Hos 12:4  He strove with the Messenger and 2overcame1, he wept and sought His favour. He found Him in Bĕyth Ěl, and there He spoke to us –

Hos 12:5  even יהוה Elohim of hosts, יהוה is His remembrance.

Verse 5 – The blessing of the tribes.

Verse 6 – Reuben (Behold a son). First, remember how we have talked about Mosheh being a foreshadowing of the coming of Messiah, Yeshua. What did Yeshua do for us? He took away the curse of Torah – Death. In this very short and sweet verse Mosheh is removing the curse of Reuben.

Numbered – Gen 49:3  “Re’ubĕn, you are my first-born, my power and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of exaltation and the excellency of power.

Gen 49:4  “Boiling like water, you do not excel, because you went up to your father’s bed, then you defiled it – he went up to my couch.

What does Torah say about  man that would sleep with his father’s wife?

Lev 20:11  ‘And a man who lies with the wife of his father has uncovered the nakedness of his father, both of them shall certainly be put to death, their blood is upon them.

What does it say about Reuben – Let Reuben (His tribe) live and not die. ((How is it possible to not die?))

Numbered – H4557 – מִסְפָּר – mispâr -mis-pawr’ – From H5608; a number, definitely (arithmetical) or indefinitely (large, innumerable; small, a few); also (abstractly) narration: –  + abundance, account, X all, X few, [in-] finite, (certain) number (-ed), tale, telling, + time.

H5608 – סָפַרsâphar – saw-far’  – A primitive root; properly to score with a mark as a tally or record, that is, (by implication) to inscribe,

H5612 – סִפְרָה  סֵפֶר – sêpher  siphrâh – say’-fer, sif-raw’ – From H5608; properly writing (the art or a document); by implication a book: – bill, book, evidence, X learn [-ed] (-ing), letter, register, scroll.

The implication is that Reuben’s tribe will be written in a book, by extension – the Book of Life. The curse of death is removed by Mosheh’s blessing, just like our curse of death has been removed by Yeshua: 1Co 15:54  And when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall come to be the word that has been written, “Death is swallowed up in overcoming.”

1Co 15:55  “O Death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your overcoming?”

1Co 15:56  And the sting of death is the sin, and the power of the sin is the Torah.

1Co 15:57  But thanks to Elohim who gives us the overcoming through our Master יהושע Messiah.

WOW!

Verse 7 – This is a blessing of restoration and preservation for Yehudah. Yehudah left his people and joined himself to another people: Gen 38:1  And at that time it came to be that Yehudah left his brothers, and turned aside to a man, an Adullamite whose name was Hirah.

Here we see the restoration: Isa 11:12  And He shall raise a banner for the nations, and gather the outcasts of Yisra’ĕl, and assemble the dispersed of Yehuḏah from the four corners of the earth.

Isa 11:13  And the envy of Ephrayim shall turn aside, and the adversaries of Yehuḏah be cut off.((Preservation: “And you be a help against his enemies”)) Ephrayim shall not envy Yehuḏah, and Yehuḏah not trouble Ephrayim. ((Romans 11))

Verses 8-11 – The blessing of Levi. H8550 – תֻּמִּים – tûmmı̂ym – toom-meem’  – Plural of H8537; perfections, ((Note: Begins with Tav))

H224 – אוּרִים – ‘ûrı̂ym – oo-reem’ – Plural of H217; lights; ((Note: Begins with Aleph))

Rev 1:8  “I am the ‘Aleph’ and the ‘Taw’, Beginning and End,” says יהוה “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Isa 44:6  “Thus said יהוה, Sovereign of Yisra’ĕl, and his Redeemer, יהוה of hosts, ‘I am the First and I am the Last, besides Me there is no Elohim.

What happened at Mash and Meribah? The people rejected the Word of Elohim. They contended with Mosheh and Aaron, both from the tribe of Levi: Psa 95:7  For He is our Elohim, And we are the people of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand. Today, if you would hear His voice:

Psa 95:8  “Do not harden your hearts as in Meribah, And as in the day of Massah in the wilderness,

Psa 95:9  “When your fathers tried Me, Have proved Me, though they saw My work.

How serious is rebellion? 1Sa 15:23  “For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and stubbornness is as wickedness and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of יהוה, He also does reject you as sovereign.”

We must make sure we are not rebelling against our Father, our Messiah. Remember, at the end of Verse 1 I asked the question, “How do we bless YHVH?” by not rebelling. By being obedient to His Word: Hosea 4:6 “My people have perished for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being priest for Me. Since you have forgotten the Torah of your Elohim, I also forget your children.”

Mal 2:7  “For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and they seek the Torah from his mouth, for he is the messenger of יהוה of hosts.

Mal 2:8  “But you, you have turned from the way, you have caused many to stumble in the Torah. You have corrupted the covenant of Lĕwi,” said יהוה of hosts.

Verse 12 – The blessing of Benyamin – This blessing gets to the very core of Benyamin’s role in life – he was the thread that held Yoseph and Yehudah together: Gen 43:8  And Yehudah said to Yisra’ĕl his father, “Send the boy with me, and let us arise and go, and live and not die, both we and you and also our little ones.

Gen 43:9  “I myself shall stand guaranty for him – from my hand you are to require him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever.

It would be Benyamin that would be the reconciliation between Yoseph and Yehudah. From Yehudah would come the sovereigns of Yisra’el: Gen 49:10  “The sceptre shall not turn aside from Yehuḏah, nor a Lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes, and to Him is the obedience of peoples.

Isa 9:6  For a Child shall be born unto us, a Son shall be given unto us, and the rule is on His shoulder. And His Name is called Wonder, Counsellor, Strong Ěl, Father of Continuity, Prince of Peace.

Isa 9:7  Of the increase of His rule and peace there is no end, upon the throne of Dawiḏ and over His reign1, to establish it and sustain it with right-ruling and with righteousness from now on, even forever. The ardour of יהוה of hosts does this.

Benyamin had another very important contribution to make. It was on Benyamin’s allotment of land that the Temple would be built.

Verses 13-17  – The blessing of Yoseph – Both tribes of Yoseph, Menasheh and Ephrayim had allotments that had plentiful water but remember what we discussed last week about the dew: Deu 32:2  “Let my instruction fall as rain, My speech drop down as dew, As fine rain on the tender plants, And as showers on the grass.

Mic 5:7  And the remnant of Yaʽaqob shall be in the midst of many peoples, as dew from יהוה, as showers on the grass, which do not wait for man nor delay for the sons of men.

Verse 18-19 – Blessing of Zebulun and Yissaskar: The “going out” has the implication of going out to war. We have discussed this many times, as in when you go out and fight the giants. But look at the focal words “Rejoice” and also “tents”.

Rejoice = H8055 – שָׂמַח – śâmach – saw-makh’ – A primitive root; probably to brighten up, that is, (figuratively) be (causatively make) blithe or gleesome: – cheer up, be (make) glad, (have make) joy (-ful), be (make) merry, (cause to, make to) rejoice, X very.

Tents – H168 – אֹהֶל – ‘ôhel – o’-hel – From H166; a tent (as clearly conspicuous from a distance): – covering, (dwelling) (place), home, tabernacle, tent.

Deu 16:14  and you shall rejoice in your festival, you and your son and your daughter, and your male servant and your female servant, and the Lĕwite, and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow who are within your gates.

Deu 16:15  “For seven days you shall observe a festival to יהוה your Elohim in the place which יהוה chooses, because יהוה your Elohim does bless you in all your increase and in all the work of your hands, and you shall be only rejoicing!

This is why Sukkot is also called the “Feast of Rejoicing”.

Verse 20-21 – Blessing of Gad – “troop” or a collection of soldiers that are mighty in battle and can tear off an arm or a crown: 1Ch 12:8  And some Gadites separated themselves to Dawid at the stronghold in the wilderness, mighty brave men, men trained for battle, who could handle shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as gazelles on the mountains:

Verse 22 – Blessing of Dan – From the allotment of Dan they could guard the rest of the tribes from their northern enemies. But Dan did not conquer their allotment so they went into the mountains of Ephrayim to the town of Layish = H3919 = Lion and they conquered the people and took the town and renamed it Dan. Dan/Layish is at the foot of Mt. Bashan.

Verse 23 – Blessing of Naphtali – Remember Naphtali means “my wrestling”: Eph 6:12  Because we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against authorities, against the world-rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual matters of wickedness in the heavenlies.

H7649 – שָׂבֵעַ – śâbêa‛ – saw-bay’-ah – From H7646; satiated (in a pleasant or disagreeable sense): – full (of), satisfied (with). ((Please nte that this word has the connotation of being satified with wheat/bread/food/lechem.))

Psa 132:15  “I greatly bless her provision, I satisfy her poor with bread.

Psa 147:14  Who makes peace in your borders, He satisfies you with the finest wheat;

Possess = H3423 – you possess by disinheriting or dispossessing someone or something else. It can even mean rob.

Jer 16:19  O יהוה, my strength and my stronghold and my refuge, in the day of distress the gentiles shall come to You from the ends of the earth and say, “Our fathers have inherited only falsehood, futility, and there is no value in them.”

We possess everlasting life by disinheriting the lies, traditions of men, handed down by our unsuspecting ancestors. We satisfy ourselves with His Bread/Word and we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against spiritual matters of wickedness.

Verses 24-25 – The blessing of Asher – Dipping his toe in oil shows abundant blessings, and sandals of iron and bronze represent strength but also iron represents slavery and bronze represents judgment, his or someone else’s.

Let’s review: Reuben/Yehudah/Levi/Binyamin/Yoseph/Ephrayim/Menasheh/Zebulun/Yissaskar/Gad/Dan/Naphtali/Asher.

Where is Shim’on?

Behold a son, celebrated and attached, the Son of the Right Arm, and let Him add and be doubly fruitful, causing (us) to forget our habitation and He will bring a reward, and His army will judge my wrestling and (give) happiness.

Ahavah vberakhot

Verse 1 – We are provided another small piece of information in this verse that makes me think that Yehoshua wrote this part of Torah. We see a phrase being used that has not been used until now and that is “man of Elohim”. The word used for man is H376 – אישׁ – ‘ı̂ysh – which literally means man in the sense of the opposite of a woman but in this context takes on the additional meaning of “the mighty man”. This is the first time that it occurs in Torah and we will see it used sparingly throughout Scripture such as: Jos 14:6 And the children of Yehuḏah came to Yehoshua in Gilgal, and Kalěḇ son of Yephunneh the Qenizzite said to him, “You know the word which יהוה said to Mosheh the man of Elohim concerning you and me in Qaḏěsh Barněa.

Here is one more “proof” that Yehoshu’a wrote this part of Torah, jump ahead to Verse 4 and see the use of the word “us”: Mosheh commanded us…

Is it important? No! It is just interesting how we see this transition from Moshe to Yehoshu’a taking place.

Some versions of Torah do not use the phrase “man of Elohim” but instead use the implied meaning of Nebu/Nebi or prophet. Now look how the phrase “man of Elohim” is used in the story of Samson: Jdg 13:6 And the woman came and spoke to her husband, saying, “A Man of Elohim came to me, and His appearance was like the appearance of a Messenger of Elohim, very awesome. But I did not ask Him where He was from, and He did not declare to me His name.

Have we seen these 3 things about a “man” before in Scripture? In 1 Samuel 9 we see the “man of Elohim” explained as seer and prophet. It is used in reference to Shemayah the prophet and also Eliyahu in 1 Kings as well as Elisha in 2 Kings. But 2 of the most interesting people that it is used in reference to are David: 2Ch_8:14 And according to the ruling of Dawiḏ his father, he appointed the divisions of the priests for their service, the Lěwites for their duties, to praise and serve before the priests, as the duty of each day required, and the gatekeepers by their divisions at each gate, for so was the command of Dawiḏ the man of Elohim.

Neh 12:24 And the heads of the Lěwites were Ḥashaḇyah, Shěrěḇyah, and Yěshua son of Qaḏmi’ěl, with their brothers opposite them, to praise, to give thanks, watch opposite watch, according to the command of Dawiḏ the man of Elohim.

and also Timotiyos in the B’rit Hadasha: 1Ti 6:11 But you, O man of Elohim, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, reverence, belief, love, endurance, meekness.

By this usage by Sha’ul, can we logically infer that one of Timotiyos’ gift was that of prophecy?

Verse 2 – We see another phrase being used for the first and only time: law of fire or fiery law.

Eshdath is a compound word consisting of H784 – aysh – fire and H1881 – dath – BDB Definition:

1) decree, law, edict, regulation, usage 1a) decree, edict, commission1b) law, rulePart of Speech: noun feminine A Related Word by BDB/Strong’s Number: of uncertain (perhaps foreign) derivation.

This word is said to be of foreign derivation and is found in 20 verses of Scripture: 1 in Ezra and 19 times in Esther. So, how did it get in Torah if it is an Aramaic word? Aramaic is not even a language at this time as far as archeologist and ethnologist can determine. Did some unknown scribe goof and place this word in Torah while transcribing it in Babylon. Maybe. What we know is that the Israelites just came out of Egypt and there is a modern Egyptian word of “wedat” that means death. If that is the case how did it get in Ezra and Esther? Xerxes controlled Egypt and did he import wise mean from Egypt to use in his court like Nebuchadnezzar did in Daniel? Quite possible. Just a thought.

Where do we find this “fiery law”? At YHVH’s right hand. Anyone else we know there in that place of honor? Rev 1:14 And His head and hair were white as white wool, as snow, and His eyes as a flame of fire,

Rev 1:15 and His feet like burnished brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters.

Luk 12:49 “I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!

Fire represents judgement, power: Mat 26:64 יהושע said to him, “You have said it. Besides I say to you, from now on you shall see the Son of Aḏam sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of the heaven.”

The word used as Power in this verse is G1411 – dunamis – the word Alfred Nobel used to describe his invention dynamite.

Verse 3 – Once again we see the illusion of sitting down at the Teacher’s feet to learn. The interesting thing about this verse is the use of the word “raglayim” for feet. Why is it interesting? Exo 23:14 “Three times in the year you are to celebrate a festival to Me:

The word is saying 3 migrations, 3 journeys, 3 walkings, a year. Remember, Hebrew is a language of action and in English we think of time in this sense as passive but in Hebrew it is thought of as an opportunity to do something, walk, journey.

1Jn 2:6 The one who says he stays in Him ought himself also to walk, even as He walked.

Adds new meaning doesn’t it?

Verse 4 – We have already noted the use of the pronoun “us”.

Verse 5 – The blessing of the tribes.

Verse 6 – is rather complicated by I will try my best. Reuben.

What does it say about Reuben – Let Reuben (and his tribe) live and not die.

Isa 11:13  And the envy of Ephrayim shall turn aside, and the adversaries of Yehuḏah be cut off. ((Preservation: “And you be a help against his enemies”)) Ephrayim shall not envy Yehuḏah, and Yehuḏah not trouble Ephrayim.

Verse 12 – Ever why the southern Kingdom of Israel is referred to as Judah when it actually consist of 2 tribes Binyamin and Yehudah? It is Yehudah keeping his promise he made to his father, Ya’aqob: Gen 43:8 And Yehuḏah said to Yisra’ěl his father, “Send the boy with me, and let us arise and go, and live and not die, both we and you and also our little ones.

Gen 43:9 “I myself shall stand guaranty for him – from my hand you are to require him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever. Gives me chills as I read it.

Ever stop and think the Temple of Elohim, called Solomon’s Temple was built on land allotted to Binyamin and his tribe? Binyamin = Son of the right hand. Ring a bell?

Also, it was because of Binyamin that the relationship between Yoseph and Yehudah was healed and their love for one another restored.

Verses 13-17 – The blessing of Yoseph. The allotments of land for Ephrayim and Menashsheh were well water territories where they could be fruitful and multiply. We see a foreshadowing of the Messiah in Yoseph’s life where he was rejected by this brethren, delivered them from death, gave them the best land where they could be fruitful and multiply and we, the remnant of Ya’aqob known as Ephrayim and Menashsheh, will be fruitful and multiply: Mic 5:7 And the remnant of Ya‛aqoḇ shall be in the midst of many peoples, as dew from יהוה, as showers on the grass, which do not wait for man nor delay for the sons of men.

In verse 17 Yoseph is compared to a first-born bull. The first-born is set apart to YHVH. We see once more allusion to the work of the Messiah. The first born could not be kept or redeemed but wholly belonged to YHVH and in this we see how Yeshu’a was wholly the first born of YHVH and was to be offered up so that we might be redeemed.

Verses 18-19 – Verse 18-19 – Blessing of Zebulun and Yissaskar: The “going out” has the implication of going out to war.

Verses 20-21 – The blessing of Gad. Remember, the Gadites chose the best land east of the Yarden River for themselves. Also remember that Gad means “troop” like a troop of soldiers that is why Gad sounds as though he is a fighter: 1Ch 12:8  And some Gadites separated themselves to Dawid at the stronghold in the wilderness, mighty brave men, men trained for battle, who could handle shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as gazelles on the mountains:

Verse 22 – The blessing of Dan. Dan is referred to as a lion’s cub, a reference to the fact that they will be a guard with the duty of protecting the border of Yisra’el in the same manner as Gad. Pro 28:1 The wrong shall flee though no one pursues, But the righteous are as bold as a lion.

Verse 23 – The blessing of Naphtali. Naphtali means “my wrestling”. The blessing sounds good and enticing but it has an ominous sound to it.

Verses 24-25 – There are people that use this Scripture to show that the huge motherlode of oil and natural gas in modern Israel is located beneath the lands given to Asher. Wrong! Dipping the foot/toe in oil is a sign of abundant blessings.

Anyone notice anything? Are they listed in their birth order? Where is Shim’on? Why was it listed this way? Let’s review: Reuben/Yehudah/Levi/Binyamin/Yoseph/Ephrayim/Menasheh/Zebulun/Yissaskar/Gad/Dan/Naphtali/Asher.

Behold a son, celebrated and attached, the Son of the Right Arm, and let Him add and be doubly fruitful, causing (us) to forget our habitation and He will bring a reward, and His army will judge my wrestling and (give) happiness.

((Just a coincidence.))
