Lesson date: Rosh Chodesh
First, looking at Mosheh is reminding the Children of Yisr’ael is that they have a covenant with YHVH and he is not telling they have a “new” covenant with YHVH. Like Yeshu’a, Moshe is reminding the Children of Yisra’el what that covenant is. Also, like Yeshua he does not say, “This is the covenant” but rather he says “these are the words” of the covenant.
As you know, the word for covenant is: H1285 – בּרית – berı̂yth – BDB Definition: 1) covenant, alliance, pledge. This is simple enough, right. So, right here in Chapter 29 we are seeing the B’rit Hadasha, the Renewed Covenant in the hearts and minds of the people, or as we know it in today’s Christianity “The New Testament”.
What is really interesting about the word “beriyth” is that it comes from the verb ((Remember, Hebrew is a language of action so verbs come first.)) barah: H1262 – בּרה – bârâh – BDB Definition: 1) to eat, consume 1a) (Qal) to eat 1b) (Piel) for eating, devouring 1c) (Hiphil) to cause to eat
Do you see that the word for covenant comes for the word to eat? Do we see any evidence of this taking place: Exo 24:10 and they saw the Elohim of Yisra’ěl, and under His feet like a paved work of sapphire stone, and like the heavens for brightness.
Exo 24:11 Yet He did not stretch out His hand against the chiefs of the children of Yisra’ěl! And they saw Elohim, and they ate and drank. ((This was a covenant meal on Mt. Horeb.))
What meal was eaten on Mt. Horeb? The Marriage Covenant meal, when Yisra’el became the Bride of YHVH. Do we see anything like this in the Renewed Covenant? Mat 26:26 And as they were eating, יהושע took bread, and having blessed, broke and gave it to the taught ones and said, “Take, eat, this is My body.”
Mat 26:27 And taking the cup, and giving thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.
Mat 26:28 “For this is My blood, that of the renewed covenant, which is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Right here, Yeshu’a renews the covenant with Yisra’el: Mat_10:6 but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Yisra’ěl.
Mat_15:24 And He answering, said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Yisra’ěl.”
If you are not Yisra’el then you have no covenant.
Verses 2-3 – Remember what you saw. Over the last two weeks, I have seen the miracles of YHVH. Miracles that left the mouths of doctors agape. Miracles that astonished people in the field of medicine. I will remember these miracles for as long as YHVH gives me a clear mind to do so.
The picture below is the symbol for the medical field and if you were in the U.S. Army medical corps you will recognize it. Oh yeah, that is the brass snake that was raised up in the Wilderness to heal the Children of Yisra’el. NO! There are two snakes, not one. Now, look at the second picture below. it. This is the staff of Asclepius, the son of Apollo, who was revered as a great healer.
Wait a minute, they look identical. Is there any evidence of Asclepius in Scripture? Yes, there is: Joh 5:2 And in Yerushalayim at the Sheep Gate there is a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Běyth Zatha, having five porches. ((Only an Asclepion has 5 porches and this very same pool has been found and it does have 5 porches.))
Joh 5:5 And a certain man was there who had a sickness thirty-eight years.
Joh 5:6 When יהושע saw him lying there, and knowing that he already had been a long time, He said to him, “Do you wish to become well?”
Joh 5:7 The sick man answered Him, “Master, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”
Joh 5:8 יהושע said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.”
Joh 5:14 Afterward יהושע found him in the Set-apart Place, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, so that no worse matter befalls you.”
What was his sin? Why did Yeshu’a say, “Sin no more”? Because he was looking for a pagan god, Asclepius, to heal him. Hasatan is so clever, but he can only imitate.
Sorry, my OCD kicked in but I wanted you to see how sneaky and clever Hasatan can be and most Christians do not take that into account: 2Th 2:3 Let no one deceive you in any way, because the falling away is to come first, and the man of lawlessness is to be revealed, the son of destruction,
1Jn_2:18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
If there were many in the time of John how many more are alive and well today?
Verse 4 – “heart to know and eyes to see and ears to hear” Isn’t that beautiful? A heart to know. Isa 6:9 And He said, “Go, and you shall say to this people, ‘Hearing, you hear, but do not understand; and seeing, you see, but do not know.’
Isa 6:10 “Make the heart of this people fat, and their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and shall turn and be healed.”
Why is part of Verse 10 underlined? Because I wanted you to know Hasatan’s game plan.
Verse 5 – I have provided for you for 40 years. Their sandals and there clothes never wore out in all the years that YHVH led them just like Torah never wears out as long as we are obedient to His Commands. Mat 6:31 “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
Mat 6:32 “For all these the nations seek for. And your heavenly Father knows that you need all these.
Mat 6:33 “But seek first the reign of Elohim, and His righteousness, and all these shall be added to you.
Verse 6 – “You ate no bread”: Joh 6:56 “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood stays in Me, and I in him.
Joh 6:57 “As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me shall live because of Me.
Joh 6:58 “This is the bread which came down out of the heaven, not as your fathers ate the manna and died. He who eats this bread shall live forever.”
1Co 10:3 and all ate the same spiritual food,
1Co 10:4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed, and the Rock was Messiah.
Verses 7-9 – You battled giants! Isn’t it interesting the the half tribe of Menashsheh, Reubenites, and the Gadites, who did not cross the Yarden River were the first ones taken into captivity? 1Ch_5:26 So the Elohim of Yisra’ěl stirred up the spirit of Pul sovereign of Ashshur, even the spirit of Tiglath-Pileser sovereign of Ashshur. And he took the Re’uḇěnites, and the Gaḏites, and the half-tribe of Menashsheh into exile, and brought them to Ḥalaḥ, and Ḥaḇor, and Hara, and the river of Gozan, unto this day.
What is the lesson here? Cross over. Leave what we know behind and cross over: H5680 – עברי – ‛ibrı̂y BDB Definition: Hebrew = “one from beyond”.
Verse 10 – “You are standing”; – אַתֶּם נִצָּבִים – ‘atem nitzaḇim’. This is important to me and the rest of you veterans out there. This is from two words in Hebrew, H859 and H5324 and it carries the connotation of a military unit standing at attention. This is not a random choice of words. The Greek word used here in the ABP+ is G2476 – “histemi”. Now, look where it is used in the B’rit Hadasha: Eph 6:11 Put on the complete armour of Elohim, for you to have power to stand against the schemes of the devil.
Eph 6:12 Because we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against authorities, against the world-rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual matters of wickedness in the heavenlies.
Eph 6:13 Because of this, take up the complete armour of Elohim, so that you have power to withstand in the wicked day, and having done all, to stand.
Eph 6:14 Stand, then, having girded your waist with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,.
Eph 6:15 and having fitted your feet with the preparation of the Good News of peace;
Eph 6:16 above all, having taken up the shield of belief with which you shall have power to quench all the burning arrows of the wicked one.
Eph 6:17 Take also the helmet of deliverance, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of Elohim,
You think it is a coincidence that Sha’ul used that word? Listen to him, veterans of battles with giants: Stand at attention Marine, stand at attention soldier, stand at attention sailor, stand at attention airman. We are in a war and we had better be prepared to do battle: Exo 12:11 ‘And this is how you eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the Pěsaḥ of יהוה.
Exo 12:12 ‘And I shall pass through the land of Mitsrayim on that night, and shall strike all the first-born in the land of Mitsrayim, both man and beast. And on all the mighty ones of Mitsrayim I shall execute judgment. I am יהוה.
YHVH is telling us how to eat the Passover, like an army at the ready to do battle. And, He clearly tells us who the enemy is; the gods of Egypt. We have to cross over, to leave the gods of Egypt behind us.
Sorry, OCD again.
Verse 11 – Who is involved in this battle against the giants and gods of Egypt. Oh wow, it is just the elders and officers. No! It is all of us, even our children, strangers who have joined themselves to Yisra’el. Everyone.
Verse 13. This is the second time we have seen this phrase in this book. It is very important. This will come in handy in our Daniel study.
Verses 14-15 – Wait a minute, this covenant is not just for those who were listening to Mosheh that day but also for people who were not there, like us. We were not there but the covenant is also for us. There is only one covenant in Scripture that brings salvation and that is the covenant made with Abraham: Gal 3:27 For as many of you as were immersed into Messiah have put on Messiah.
Gal 3:28 There is not Yehuḏi nor Greek, there is not slave nor free, there is not male and female, for you are all one in Messiah יהושע.
Gal 3:29 And if you are of Messiah, then you are seed of Aḇraham, and heirs according to promise.
If I could double underline and double bold this phrase I would. This is perhaps the worst phrase in the B’rit Hadasha for Christian theology. This proves that you have to be counted from the seed of Abraham, spiritually, to be counted as one of YHVH’s children.
Verses 16-18 – You saw all the false gods of the Egyptian mystery religion as you passed through the land. Now, take them out of your heart and your life.
Verse 19 – This was me in Christianity. I have nothing to worry about because I have grace. I don’t have to keep the laws and command because all of that was nailed to the cross. IGNORANCE is bliss. Ecc 1:18 For in much wisdom is much grief, and he who increases knowledge increases suffering.
Verse 20 – This ought to scare everyone but, unfortunately, the doctrine of grace rules supreme in the world. Mystery Babylon is at work.
Verse 21 – The wicked, stubborn and the rebellious, will be separated out for not keeping Torah: Mat 13:49 “Thus shall it be at the end of the age: the messengers shall come forth, and separate the wicked out of the midst of the righteous,
Mat 13:50 and shall throw them into the furnace of fire – there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.”
Here is the “Rapture”. Do I want to be a part of this? Don’t believe me? Luk 17:34 “I say to you, in that night there shall be two in one bed, the one shall be taken and the other shall be left.
Luk 17:35 “Two women shall be grinding together, the one shall be taken and the other shall be left.
Luk 17:36 “Two shall be in the field, the one shall be taken and the other shall be left.”
Luk 17:37 And they answering, said to Him, “Where, Master?” And He said to them, “Where the body is, there also the vultures shall be gathered together.”
Isa 66:15 “For look, יהוה comes with fire and with His chariots, like a whirlwind, to render His displeasure with burning, and His rebuke with flames of fire.
Isa 66:16 “For by fire and by His sword יהוה shall judge all flesh, and the slain of יהוה shall be many –
Isa 66:17 those who set themselves apart and cleanse themselves at the gardens after ‘one’ in the midst, eating flesh of pigs and the abomination and the mouse, are snatched away, together,” declares יהוה.
People tell me all the time, “The word for rapture means “to snatch”. Yes, it does but look how the word is used here. Does it sound like something you want to be a part of?
Verses 22-28 – This is a warning to America. This is a warning to everyone who thinks that the “church” has a “new” covenant. There is only one covenant that brings salvation ((Gal. 3:27-29)) and if we don’t turn our “stiff necks” from the wrong way, it is our fate.
Verse 29 – This is very powerful. The secret matters belong to YHVH. How does gravity work? What keeps the Earth in its orbit? Why did YHVH choose the moon for the moedim? I don’t know but, what I do know is that He has revealed to us His Torah and we can learn His Ways and His Word. Amein.

“These are the Words”
Verse 1 – Notice how exact the wording for the beginning of verse 1 is: These are the Words , NOT “this is the covenant”. Why not? Because the Words define the covenant and it is only complete when the people adhere to and obey the covenant. (Shamar and Shama shama.)
Now look at the word “besides” which is used in relation to the covenant. The word is H4480 minney/minniy/min which is a preposition and is usually translated from or out of in many senses: – above, after, among, at, because of, by (reason of), from (among), in, X neither, X nor, (out) of, over, since, X then, through, X whether, with.
Why is it different this time” The next word after H4480 is H905. In this case minniy is being used as a helper to form the expression. In English we use phrases with helpers all the time, i.e. would have had, he has been sick, had I known I would have stopped. What does H905 mean?
H905 – בַּד – bad – bad – From H909; properly separation; by implication a part of the body, branch of a tree, bar for carrying; figuratively chief of a city; especially (with prepositional prefix) as adverb, apart, only, besides: – alone, apart, bar, besides, branch, by self, of each alike, except, only, part, staff, strength.
In other words H905 is amplifying the meaning of H4480 by showing that it is “chief”, “part of” or exceptional.
Verse 2-3 – “You yourselves saw”. Is it proper for Mosheh to say that they had “seen” it for themselves? By this time most of those who witnessed the miracles are dead, only Caleb, Joshua, some of the Levites and Mosheh, plus those that were under the age of 20 (who are at this time in their 40’s and 50’s) actually saw what YHVH did for Yisra’el for themselves. The word employed here, H7200 is implying that others saw what YHVH did for themselves and were witness to the miracles. Want to guess what the next word is? H853.
What does this have to do with Yeshua? Were you or I witness to the miracles performed by Yeshua? No, only those in our own life. Were we witness to the many miracles performed by the apostles after Yeshua? No, we were not. But we now have the “testimony” of the covenant that was renewed by Yeshua as our witness. It now makes me shudder to realize that in our hands we have the “ark” of the witness and we come together one or more times a week to read the”testimony” from the “ark” of the witness.
Verse 4 – “heart to know, and eyes to see and ears to hear”. Remember, Mosheh is recalling the entire book of Debarim in one day. Some are hearing the words for the first time. In Debarim 31:28 Mosheh will invoke heaven and earth as witnesses against the Children of Yisra’el. Mosheh plainly states that they DID NOT have a heart to know, and eyes to see and ears to hear until THIS DAY, the day they heard the covenant. Look what happens in Isaiah’s time: Isa 6:9 And He said, “Go, and you shall say to this people, ‘Hearing, you hear, but do not understand; and seeing, you see, but do not know.’
Isa 6:10 “Make the heart of this people fat, and their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and shall turn and be healed.”
Verses 5-6 – “garments have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn out on your feet.” Where have we seen this before? Mat 10:9 “Do not acquire gold or silver or copper for your moneybelts,
Mat 10:10 or a bag for the journey, or two undergarments, or sandals, or staffs, for the worker is worthy of his food.
What is this scripture saying? Php_4:6 Do not worry at all, but in every matter, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to Elohim.
Do not worry about anything. That is hard to do sometimes.
“You ate no bread and drank no wine nor strong drink, Why? Because they were set-apart. They had no leavened bread because a little leaven leavens the whole lump. Why the wine and strong drink? I think the clue lies in the word for “drank” (H8354) which means to drink “assuredly”, drink in certainty, drink surely or to banquet. Also, if their minds were clouded with wine and strong drink they would be “suspect” witnesses.
1Co 10:1 For I do not wish you to be ignorant, brothers, that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea,
1Co 10:2 and all were immersed into Mosheh in the cloud and in the sea,
1Co 10:3 and all ate the same spiritual food,
1Co 10:4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed, and the Rock was Messiah.
Verse 7-8 – A reminder that we should not even fear “giants”. The testimony that we carry in our hearts and minds is contrary to almost every “giant” of church doctrine down through history. We are not to fear those “giants” because YHVH our Elohim will: Mat 10:18 “And you shall be brought before governors and sovereigns(Giants) for My sake, as a witness to them and to the gentiles.
Mat 10:19 “But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it shall be given to you in that hour what you shall speak,
Mat 10:20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking in you.
Notice Yeshua did not say “My Spirit.”
Verse 9 – You shall guard the words of this covenant…and blessings will follow.
Verses 10-15 – Establish you today as a people for Himself.
Here is the most beautiful part: Deu 29:14 “And not with you alone I am making this covenant and this oath,
Deu 29:15 but with him who stands here with us today before יהוה our Elohim, as well as with him who is not here with us today.
This is speaking to you and I. Go back to my comments on Verses 2-3. Here is our testimony from the “ark” of the witness.
Verses 16-19 – You walked in Mitzrayim (the world) and saw all the sins that they do, now don’t do them.
Verses 20-21 – But if you do them you will be cursed! Heb 6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Set-apart Spirit,
Heb 6:5 and have tasted the good Word of Elohim and the powers of the age to come,
Heb 6:6 and fall away, to renew them again to repentance – having impaled for themselves the Son of Elohim again, and put Him to open shame.
Isn’t that what is being said in Hebrews above?
Verses 22-24 – Why did this happen?
Verses 25-28 – Because they forsook the covenant. Just a note here: the word after forsaken in Hebrew is H853, Think of the implications of the placement of this word.
Verse 29 – “to do(H853) all the Words of this Torah.”
