Debarim (Deuteronomy) 28 — “IF…THEN…”

Lesson date: 9/15/5854AA

Verse 1 – “Diligently obey – Shama shama (H8085 used twice). It can also be translated “If obeying you obey”. Remember, the difference between hearing and listening is that when you listen you obey what you heard. Hearing goes in one ear and out the other.

The sentence actually starts with “If” – H518 – אִם – ‘im – eem. If you will “hear”, “guard” – “do” all His commands which I command you today. Does this say “name it and claim it? No! If you diligently obey.

Luke 11:28  But He said, “Blessed rather are those hearing the Word of Elohim and watching over it!”

2Pe_2:21  For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the set-apart command delivered unto them.

1Jn_2:3  And by this we know that we know Him, if we guard His commands.

1Jn_2:4  The one who says, “I know Him,” and does not guard His commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

1Jn_3:22  And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we guard His commands and do what is pleasing in His sight.

1Jn_5:2  By this we know that we love the children of Elohim, when we love Elohim and guard His commands.

1Jn_5:3  For this is the love for Elohim, that we guard His commands, and His commands are not heavy,

2Jn_1:6  And this is the love, that we walk according to His commands. This is the command, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.

Verse 5 – “baskets and kneading bowls”. The baskets and kneading bowls represent the increase of the land and the people. The baskets are for collecting the increase: Num_11:32  And the people were up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and gathered the quail. He who has least gathered ten omers. And they spread them out for themselves all around the camp.

It is not an accident that this scripture mentions “he who has least gathered ten omers”. Remember discussion between Abraham and the Angel of YHVH: Gen 18:32  And he said, “Let not יהוה be displeased, and let me speak only this time: Suppose there are found ten?” And He said, “I would not destroy it for the sake of ten.”

It took ten righteous men to form a quorum of civil government that is why Abraham did not try to go for less than ten. The baskets also represent the community at large

Verse 6 – Going out…coming in =  In all your travels

Num 27:21  “And he is to stand before Elʽazar the priest, who shall inquire before יהוה for him by the right-ruling of the Urim. At his word they go out, and at his word they come in, both he and all the children of Yisra’ĕl with him, all the congregation.”

Deu 31:2  and he said to them, “I am one hundred and twenty years old today. I am no longer able to go out and come in. And יהוה has said to me, ‘You do not pass over this Yardĕn.’

1Ki 3:7  “And now, O יהוה my Elohim, You have set up Your servant to reign instead of my father Dawiḏ. But I am a little child, I do not know how to go out or to come in.

Jos 14:11  “Yet I am still as strong today as I was on the day that Mosheh sent me. As my strength was then, so my strength is now, for battle, and for going out and for coming in.

Verse 7 – YHVH causes your enemies to flee (Lev. 26:7-8)

Rom 8:31  What then shall we say to this? If Elohim is for us, who is against us?

Isa_52:12  For you shall not come out in haste, nor go in flight. For יהוה is going before you, and the Elohim of Yisra’ĕl is your rear guard.

Verse 8 – blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you set your hand, The workings of man’s hands are a sign of his industry, skill but it also represents man’s ability to carve out of wood or stone a false god for himself. Exo 20:4  “You do not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of that which is in the heavens above, or which is in the earth beneath, or which is in the waters under the earth,

Exo 20:5  you do not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, יהוה your Elohim am a jealous Ěl, visiting the crookedness of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,

Man can also set himself to doing the work of YHVH our Elohim and his works will be blessed.

Exo 13:9  “And it shall be as a sign to you on your hand and as a reminder between your eyes, that the Torah of יהוה is to be in your mouth, for with a strong hand יהוה has brought you out of Mitsrayim.

Deu 6:6  “And these Words which I am commanding you today shall be in your heart,

Deu 6:7  and you shall impress them upon your children, and shall speak of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up,

Deu 6:8  and shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.

Our works (hands) and our thoughts set us apart to Elohim that is why Hasatan will mark his people the same way: Rev 14:9  And a third messenger followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark upon his forehead or upon his hand,

Rev 14:10  he also shall drink of the wine of the wrath of Elohim, which is poured out undiluted into the cup of His wrath. And he shall be tortured with fire and sulphur before the set-apart messengers and before the Lamb.

Verse 9 – “יהוה does establish you as a set-apart people…if you guard the commands of יהוה your Elohim and walk in His ways.”

IF…then

Verse 10 – Called by His Name.

Verse 11-13 – You will prosper in the land that He gave us: Luk 21:16  “And you shall also be betrayed by parents and brothers and relatives and friends. And some of you shall be put to death.

Luk 21:17  “And you shall be hated by all because of My Name.

Luk 21:18  “But not a hair of your head shall be lost at all.

Luk 21:19  “Possess your lives by your endurance!

Verse 14 – “do not turn aside” : Pro 4:25  Let your eyes look forward, And your eyelids look straight before you.

Pro 4:26  Consider the path of your feet, And all your ways are established.

Pro 4:27  Do not turn to the right or the left; Turn your foot away from evil.

Mat 7:14  “Because the gate is narrow and the way is hard pressed which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

1Sa 12:23  “Also, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against יהוה in ceasing to pray for you, but I shall teach you the good and straight way.

Psa 25:8  Good and straight is יהוה; Therefore He teaches sinners in the way.
