Debarim (Deuteronomy) 21 — Cold Case/C.S.I. (Bonus: Paleo Hebrew sample)

Lesson date: 7/25/5854AA

Verses 1-9 – YHVH gave a remedy for an unsolved murder. Without a remedy a blood curse would come upon the land and the land would not produce as it should. In fact, a localized drought could come upon the land, diseases may come to the closest city to the dead body or even an enemy could come in and destroy the city and its people. But, is this all there is to these verses of scripture?

Our Messiah promised us that all would be fulfilled: Mat 5:18  “For truly, I say to you, till the heaven and the earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall by no means pass from the Torah till all be done.

We know Torah is still in effect since the heaven and earth passing away would have likely made all the newspaper headlines. What significance does this scripture have for us? Mat 27:24  And when Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but rather an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this Righteous One. You shall see to it.”

Mat 27:25  And all the people answering, said, “His blood be on us and on our children.”

The judge, Pilate, rightly washed his hands of innocent blood, according to Torah but the people, in their blood lust, took upon themselves and their descendants a blood curse. Anyone familiar with the history of Yisra’el will quickly understand that this curse was real. How is this curse “gotten rid of”? Let’s look at another heifer: Num 19:2  “This is a law of the Torah which יהוה has commanded, saying, ‘Speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl, that they bring you a red heifer, a perfect one, in which there is no blemish and on which a yoke has never come.

Num 19:3  ‘And you shall give it to Elʽazar the priest, and he shall bring it outside the camp, and shall slaughter it before him.

Num 19:4  ‘And Elʽazar the priest shall take some of its blood with his finger, and sprinkle some of its blood seven times toward the front of the Tent of Meeting.

This is the Torah of the red heifer and is found in Bemidbar 19. What are the characteristics of the heifer?

  1. Red
  2. Perfect (complete/tamiym)
  3. No blemish
  4. Has never had a yoke upon it
  5. Slaughtered outside the camp

The Hebrew word for red is “adom” – H122 – אדם – ‘âdôm – BDB Definition: 1) red, ruddy (of man, horse, heifer, garment, water, lentils)

H121 – אדם – ‘âdâm BDB Definition: Adam = “red” 1) first man

H120 – אדם – ‘âdâm – BDB Definition: 1) man, mankind 1a) man, human being

Notice anything in the three words above? In Hebrew they are all spelled the same. Red appears to be identical to Adam and also man. Yeshua was called the Son of Adam, the Son of Man. Did He fulfill the other characteristics as well? Heb 7:26  For it was fitting that we should have such a High Priest – kind, innocent, undefiled, having been separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens,

1Pe 1:19  but with the precious blood of Messiah, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless,

Since Yeshua was without sin He had never been yoked by sin.

Lev 26:13  ‘I am יהוה your Elohim, who brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim, from being their slaves. And I have broken the bars of your yoke and made you walk upright.

Mat 11:29  “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am meek and humble in heart, and you shall find rest for your beings.

Mat 11:30  “For My yoke is gentle and My burden is light.”

Gal 5:1  In the freedom with which Messiah has made us free, stand firm, then, and do not again be held with a yoke of slavery.

Was He killed in the city or outside? Mat 27:33  And when they came to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull,

Golgotha was located about 200 meters outside of the city gate.

Let’s look at what “red heifer” looked like when Mosheh wrote it: parah adumah =

p Pey means mouth but can also be the spoken word, to blow or scatter;

r Resh is the head, chief, top or beginning;

e Hey is “behold”, or to praise, it can also mean to breathe or sigh (in praise)

a   Alef represents “El” or Elohim or strong leader or beginning (as in alef/tav)

d Dalet is the tent door/flap it swings back and forth and represents access;

m Mem represents water, a multitude of people, chaos also juice (grape) or blood.

Let’s put it together: The Word of our Head is to be praised and is the Aleph (beginning) and gives us access by His Blood.

1Pe 1:2  chosen according to the foreknowledge of Elohim the Father, set apart by the Spirit unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of יהושע Messiah: Favour and peace be increased to you.

Heb 12:24  and to יהושע the Mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling which speaks better than the blood of Hebel.

Remember, Torah is the instruction manual and without it you can’t assemble the truck!

Verse 10 – Once again we see that it is a foregone conclusion that we will go out to war with the enemy: 2Ti 2:3  Suffer hardship with us as a good soldier of יהושע Messiah.

2Ti 2:4  No one serving as a soldier gets involved in the affairs of this life, in order to please only him who enlisted him as a soldier.

Verses 11-14 – Deal with a soldier marrying a captive woman. Notice, the captive must shave her own head if the soldier is to take her as his wife. She is voluntarily ‘shedding’ her old life for a new life. 1Co 11:15  And if a woman has long hair, it is an esteem to her, because the long hair has been given to her over against a veil.

She is ridding herself of her former esteem. The same with trimming her nails. Also, in Hebrew thought, shaving your head was a sign of lamentation, sorrow or mourning. Simple enough, right? Why are we mourning? Jer 16:19  O יהוה, my strength and my stronghold and my refuge, in the day of distress the gentiles shall come to You from the ends of the earth and say, “Our fathers have inherited only falsehood, futility, and there is no value in them.”

Isa 2:3  And many peoples shall come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of יהוה, to the House of the Elohim of Yaʽaqoḇ, and let Him teach us His ways, and let us walk in His paths, for out of Tsiyon comes forth the Torah, and the Word of יהוה from Yerushalayim.”

Were we not held captive to sin? 2Ti_2:26  and they come to their senses, out of the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his desire.

We must come out of captivity to the sin of Mitsrayim or Babylon: Exo 20:2  “I am יהוה your Elohim, who brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim, out of the house of slavery.

These words precede our marriage ketubah in Exodus 20. YHVH took us out of the house of slavery and we should “shed” ourselves of our former sinful life.He has adopted us unto marriage: Rev 19:7  “Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him praise, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife prepared herself.”

Rev 19:8  And to her it was given to be dressed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteousnesses of the set-apart ones.

Rev 19:9  And he said to me, “Write, ‘Blessed are those who have been called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’ ” And he said to me, “These are the true words of Elohim.”

Verses 15-17 The law of the firstborn status. Nowhere in scripture do we see this more vividly than in Genesis with Leah and Rachel. Reuben was the firstborn of the unloved wife but Reuben forfeited his inheritance when he slept with his father’s concubine. Then we see the firstborn of Rachel, Joseph, given Reuben’s share of the inheritance. Don’t forget about Yiphtah: Jdg 11:1  And Yiphtaḥ the Gilʽaḏite was a mighty brave one, but he was the son of a whore. And Gilʽaḏ brought forth Yiphtaḥ.

Jdg 11:2  And the wife of Gilʽad bore sons. And when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Yiphtah out, and said to him, “You shall not have an inheritance in the house of our father, for you are the son of another woman.”

And then, trouble came: Jdg 11:5  And it came to be, when the children of Ammon fought against Yisra’ĕl, that the elders of Gilʽaḏ went to bring Yiphtaḥ out of the land of Toḇ.

Jdg 11:6  And they said to Yiphtaḥ, “Come, and you shall be our commander, and let us fight against the children of Ammon.”

Jdg 11:7  But Yiphtaḥ said to the elders of Gilʽaḏ, “Did you not hate me, and drive me from my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in trouble?”

Jdg 11:8  And the elders of Gilʽaḏ said to Yiphtaḥ, “That is the reason we have turned to you, that you shall go with us and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilʽad.”

Yiphtah became head over all the people of Gil’ad, not just his brothers. The same has taken place with Yeshua, He is the first born of Elohim and has been given all creation as His Inheritance.

Verses 18-21 – The rebellious son in question is not a small child but a young man eligible to join the army, 20 years old. Only the parents could present him to the elders of the cit because only his parents would know whether or not he was raised according to Torah. Now, let’s compare this passage to Yeshua: Mat 11:19  “The Son of Adam came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘See, a man, a glutton and a winedrinker, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ And wisdom was declared right by her works.”

Do you see what is at work? The “elders”, Pharisees, Sadducees and Scribes are condemning Yeshua because He would not keep the traditions of men and to them He appeared as one breaking the Torah. But Yeshua refuted their accusations: Mat 3:17  and see, a voice out of the heavens, saying, “This is My Son, the Beloved, in whom I did delight.”

Joh 5:37  “And the Father who sent Me, He bore witness of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form.

Luk 24:44  And He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all have to be filled that were written in the Torah of Mosheh and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.”

In these scriptures we see that YHVH is indeed Yeshua’s Father and Torah is also bearing witness of Him as though His mother. Over and over we see where the Jews wanted to stone Yeshua for blasphemy and later did while on the cross: Deu 21:22  “And when a man has committed a sin worthy of death, then he shall be put to death and you shall hang him on a tree.

Gal 3:13  Messiah redeemed us from the curse of the Torah, having become a curse for us – for it has been written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs upon a tree.”

Verse 23 – In this verse we see the complete fulfillment of scripture.

Deu 21:23  “Let his body not remain overnight on the tree, for you shall certainly bury him the same day – for he who is hanged is accursed of Elohim – so that you do not defile the land which יהוה your Elohim is giving you as an inheritance.

Mar 15:42  And when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath,

Luk 23:54  And it was Preparation day, and the Sabbath was approaching.

Joh 19:41  And at the place where He was impaled there was a garden, and in the garden a fresh tomb in which no one had yet been laid.

Joh 19:42  There, then, because of the Preparation Day of the Yehuḏim, they laid יהושע, because the tomb was near.

Just want to add one more thought:

Joh 7:49  “But this crowd that does not know the Torah is accursed.”

“Torah’s CSI”

I am quite sure, at times, I bore people to tears when I talk about Hebrew, languages in general, history, epigraphics and etymology so, I will try to keep it at a minimum but, there are some things that you can only see in Hebrew. Having said that let’s look at the Torah for Unsolved Murders.

Verses 1-9 – If these verses sound familiar it is because of the Torah of the Red Heifer in Bemidbar 19. This is slightly different in execution but not in symbolism. What are the circumstances that we need to know? A murdered individual is found in a field or open area of land, then once discovered the elders and judges come together and measure to the nearest city and it is this city that has the responsibility to “atone” for the murder of the individual. To do this we will need a heifer who has not been yoked or worked and take it to a stream, brook or river flowing with water and break its neck and then the elders of the city closest to the dead person wash their hands over the heifer. I condensed it down a little and I am going to add one word to this and show you something I think is really neat.

The word that I am adding is from Bemidbar 19 and it is the word “adumah” which is the feminine form of “adom” which means red: פרה  אֲדֻמה This agreement in the ending of the words is call a “noun in construct” and to the best of my knowledge, limited as it is, all Semitic languages have a form of a noun in construct. “Parah” simply means heifer but let me show you have Mosheh would have written it:

p         Pey      Open mouth, speak, word, to blow or scatter by blowing

r         Resh    Head, top, first, chief

e         Hey     Behold, reveal(ed), look, breath, sigh

a         Alef     Strong, leader, first, ox, bull

d         dalet    Door(of the tent), path, to enter, entrance

m         Mem    Water, liquid, chaos, nations

The Word is our Head and Reveals the Alef (Strong Leader) as the Door (Path) of the Nations.

Joh_10:7 יהושע therefore said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

Mat 28:19 “Therefore, go and make taught ones of all the nations, immersing them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Set-apart Spirit, (Name is in the singular in the Hebrew text, why?)

Let me stop right here to make a comparison between what Yeshu’a told His apostles and what YHVH told His Prophet Mosheh: Exo 3:16 “Go, and you shall gather the elders of Yisra’ěl together, and say to them, ‘יהוה Elohim of your fathers, the Elohim of Aḇraham, of Yitsḥaq, and of Ya‛aqoḇ, appeared to me, saying, “I have indeed visited you and seen what is done to you in Mitsrayim;

In Verse 4, near the end it reads, “Break the(H853 = את)  heifer’s (Eglah) neck” . I know what you are thinking, I bet, “It says neck not red.” You’re right, neck is “oreph”:

o         Ayin    Eye, to see, to know(ledge)

r         Resh    Head, top first, chief

p         F/Pey   Open mouth, speak, word, to blow or scatter by blowing

The Word is our Head and Reveals the Knowledge that our Head is the Word.

Eph_5:23 Because the husband is head of the wife, as also the Messiah is head of the assembly, and He is Saviour of the body.

Col_1:18 And He is the Head of the body, the assembly, who is the beginning, the first-born from the dead, that He might become the One who is first in all.

Yes, “eglah” also means heifer: H5697 – עגלה – ‛eglâh – BDB Definition: 1) heifer: So, what does eglah mean:

o         Ayin    To see, to know(ledge)

c         Gimel  Camel, lift up, pride, benefit

l         Lamed Shepherd, (shepherd’s) staff, authority, tongue

e         Hey     Behold, reveal(ed), look, breath, sigh

See the Lifting Up of the Shepherd Revealed!

Joh_3:14 “And as Mosheh lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so the Son of Aḏam has to be lifted up,

Let me stop here, for those of you who may be new to the study of Hebrew, Hebrew is not just one language stylistically, but rather 5 different ways of writing: 1) Pictographic (Also called Hyksos, why? Used by Mosheh); 2) Paleo-Hebrew (used by David); 3) Aramaic-Hebrew; 4) Modern Block Form 5) Modern Cursive Hebrew. Many scholars agree that it was the scribe Ezra (Etzra in Hebrew or Esdras in Greek)) who changed Paleo-Hebrew to Aramaic-Hebrew while in Babylon. Some say it was because he felt that many of the images were of pagan origin. Suffice it to say that the change was so dramatic that the exiles had trouble communicating with those that did go into captivity: Neh 8:3 And he read from it in the open space in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand. And the ears of all the people listened to the Book of the Torah.

Neh 8:4 And Ezra the scribe stood on a platform of wood which they had made for the purpose. And beside him on his right stood Mattithyah, and Shema, and Anayah, and Uriyah, and Ḥilqiyah, and Ma‛asěyah. And on his left stood Peḏayah, and Misha’ěl, and Malkiyah, and Ḥashum, and Ḥashbaddanah, Zeḵaryah, Meshullam.

Neh 8:5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people. And when he opened it, all the people stood up.

Neh 8:6 And Ezra blessed יהוה, the great Elohim. Then all the people answered, “Aměn, Aměn!” while lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshipped יהוה with faces to the ground.

Neh 8:7 And Yěshua, and Bani, and Shěrěḇyah, Yamin, Aqquḇ, Shabbethai, Hoḏiyah, Ma‛asěyah, Qelita, Azaryah, Yozaḇaḏ, Ḥanan, Pelayah, and the Lěwites, caused the people to understand the Torah while the people were in their place.

Neh 8:8 And they read in the Book of the Torah of Elohim, translating to give the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

Look who else has problems (which tribe) with Hebrew pronunciations in the following verses and what happens to them: Jdg 12:5 And Gil‛aḏ captured the fords of the Yarděn that faced Ephrayim. And it came to be, when the fugitives from Ephrayim said, “Let me pass over,” the men of Gil‛aḏ said to him, “You are an Ephrayimite!” If he said, “No,”

Jdg 12:6 then they would say to him, “Please say, ‘Shibboleth’!” And he would say, “Sibboleth,” for he was unable to pronounce it right. Then they seized him and slew him at the fords of the Yarděn. And at that time there fell forty-two thousand Ephrayimites.

I am not that tough on pronunciations.

Let me go back to Bemidbar 19: Num 19:2 “This is a law of the Torah which יהוה has commanded, saying, ‘Speak to the children of Yisra’ěl, that they bring you a red heifer, a perfect one, in which there is no blemish and on which a yoke has never come.

Heb 7:26 For it was fitting that we should have such a High Priest – kind, innocent, undefiled, having been separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens,

1Pe 1:19 but with the precious blood of Messiah, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless,

H5923 – עוֹל  עֹל – ‛ôl   ‛ôl – ole, ole – From H5953; a yoke (as imposed on the neck), literally or figuratively: – yoke.

Look at Verse 7: Deu 21:7 “And they shall answer and say, ‘Our hands have not shed this blood, nor have our eyes seen it.

Mat 27:24 And when Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but rather an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this Righteous One. You shall see to it.”

Mat_27:25 And all the people answering, said, “His blood be on us and on our children.”

Act 5:28 saying, “Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this Name? And look, you have filled Yerushalayim with your teaching, and intend to bring the blood of this Man upon us!”

Now, look at the symbolism that is conveyed in the fact that they are washing their hands of innocent blood over the heifer that was killed in the water of the wadi. Do you see it? Innocent blood is washed from their hands over the water that represents the nations.

m          Mem    Water, liquid, chaos, nations

Verses 10-14 – The capture of a woman from among the nations. Is this all? When Yeshu’a walked on Earth, did He fight a battle? Did He take a captive from among the nations? Did He find this captive pleasing in His sight? Did that captive shave her head and trim her nails? Did she do away with the covering of her former god(s)? Or, did she chose to keep them after her period for mourning was up? Did He let her go her own way, even if it meant her destruction? 2Th 2:9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power and signs and wonders of falsehood,

2Th 2:10 and with all deceit of unrighteousness in those perishing, because they did not receive the love of the truth, in order for them to be saved.

2Th 2:11 And for this reason Elohim sends them a working of delusion, for them to believe the falsehood,

2Th 2:12 in order that all should be judged who did not believe the truth, but have delighted in the unrighteousness.

Is it possible? Eph 2:11 Therefore remember that you, once nations in the flesh, who are called ‘the uncircumcision’ by what is called ‘the circumcision’ made in the flesh by hands,

Eph 2:12 that at that time you were without Messiah, excluded from the citizenship of Yisra’ěl and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no expectation and without Elohim in the world.

Eph 2:13 But now in Messiah יהושע you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of the Messiah.

Eph 2:14 For He is our peace, who has made both one, and having broken down the partition of the barrier,

Verses 15-17 – When a man has two wives.  There once was a King who had two wives. One bore him many sons and the other did not. The one who had no children grew resentful and shamed the King openly so he put her away. The King, being very wise, devised a plan to cause his wife to turn back to him so, he gave her his truly first born son, to demonstrate his love for her and naturally this caused his wife who mothered many children for the King to be jealous and the King rebuked her for this. The funny thing about this tale is that the unfruitful wife’s name was Ephrath which means “fruitful” and in the end it was the son of Ephrath which bore many more sons and daughters than one who bore many first: Eze 37:19 say to them, ‘Thus said the Master יהוה, “See, I am taking the stick of Yosěph, which is in the hand of Ephrayim, and the tribes of Yisra’ěl, his companions. And I shall give them unto him, with the stick of Yehuḏah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in My hand.” ’

Eze 37:20 “And the sticks on which you write shall be in your hand before their eyes.

Eze 37:21 “And speak to them, ‘Thus said the Master יהוה, “See, I am taking the children of Yisra’ěl from among the nations, wherever they have gone, and shall gather them from all around, and I shall bring them into their land.

Eze 37:22 “And I shall make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Yisra’ěl. And one sovereign shall be sovereign over them all, and let them no longer be two nations, and let them no longer be divided into two reigns.

Oh, yeah, I forgot one thing, Ephrath’s name is in Ca’ananite but in Hebrew it is Ephrayim, which means “Doubly Fruitful”. ((Please read the word study for the Kinsman Redeemer.))

Verses 18-21 – The rebellious son. This is not talking about a minor child but rather a grown man who is rebellious toward his parents.

Verses 22-23 – This man is put to death, how? And, he is hung upon a tree, before, during or after? But, his body must be taken down and buried the same day as his death: Joh 10:31 Again the Yehuḏim picked up stones to stone Him.

Joh 10:32 יהושע answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. Because of which of these works do you stone Me?”

Joh 10:33 The Yehuḏim answered Him, saying, “We do not stone You for a good work, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself Elohim.”

Mat 26:64 יהושע said to him, “You have said it. Besides I say to you, from now on you shall see the Son of Aḏam sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of the heaven.”

Mat 26:65 Then the high priest tore his garments, saying, “He has blasphemed! Why do we need any more witnesses? See, now you have heard His blasphemy!

Gal 3:13 Messiah redeemed us from the curse of the Torah, having become a curse for us – for it has been written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs upon a tree.”

Gal 3:14 in order that the blessing of Aḇraham might come upon the nations in Messiah יהושע, to receive the promise of the Spirit through belief.

Luk 23:54 And it was Preparation day, and the Sabbath was approaching.

Luk 23:55 And the women who had come with Him from Galil followed after, and saw the tomb and how His body was laid.

Luk 23:56 And having returned, they prepared spices and perfumes. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the command.

Joh 19:41 And at the place where He was impaled there was a garden, and in the garden a fresh tomb in which no one had yet been laid.

Joh 19:42 There, then, because of the Preparation Day of the Yehuḏim, they laid יהושע, because the tomb was near.

Almost everything about Debarim 21 speaks to us of the first coming of Yeshu’a Messiah.
