Verses 1-2 – The Nazirite vow is very well known in Scripture. It is very well known but is it really understood? In verse 2 the first word used for “separate” is H6381 – פּלא – pâlâ’ – BDB Definition:1) to be marvellous, be wonderful, be surpassing, be extraordinary, separate by distinguishing action. It seems strange to me that a word that is most often translated as “wonderful” or “wondrous works” would also mean “separate”. The word is used 30 times in Psalms alone. The next book in which it is most used is Job. The two most common forms of this word are H6381 and H6382. It can literally mean “too difficult to understand”.
Who is one of the most famous Nazirites? Samson. But look what happens in the conception of Samson: Jdg 13:13 And the Messenger of יהוה said to Manowaḥ, “Let the woman guard all that I said to her.
Jdg 13:14 “Let her not eat any food that comes from the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, or eat any unclean food. Let her guard all that which I have commanded her.”
Jdg 13:15 And Manowaḥ said to the Messenger of יהוה, “Please let us detain You, and prepare a young goat for You.”
Jdg 13:16 And the Messenger of יהוה said to Manowaḥ, “Though you detain Me, I do not eat your food. But if you offer an ascending offering, offer it to יהוה.” For Manowaḥ did not know He was a Messenger of יהוה.
Jdg 13:17 Then Manowaḥ said to the Messenger of יהוה, “What is Your name? When Your words come true, then we shall esteem You.”
Jdg 13:18 And the Messenger of יהוה said to him, “Why do you ask My name, since it is wondrous?”
Ring a bell? It should: Isa 9:6 For a Child is born unto us, a Son is given unto us, and the rule is on His shoulder. And His Name is called Wonder, Counsellor, Strong Ěl, Father of Continuity, Prince of Peace.
Believe it or not it is from this word that the name for the Apostle Paul is derived because the Greeks did not understand the Hebrew word being used: Act 13:9 Then Sha’ul, who also is Paul – filled with the Set-apart Spirit, looked intently at him,
Act 13:2 And as they were doing service to the Master and fasted, the Set-apart Spirit said, “Separate unto Me Barnaḇa and Sha’ul for the work to which I have called them.”
Sha’ul was not named Paul but rather he was “separated” from the others. Now, lets play a word game. If we look in Judges 13:18 in the LXX and see the name of the angel and it is Wondrous, in Greek that would be G2298 – thaumastos: Rev 15:3 And they sing the song of Mosheh the servant of Elohim, and the song of the Lamb, saying, “Great and marvellous are Your works, יהוה Ěl Shaddai! Righteous and true are Your ways, O Sovereign of the set-apart ones!
Rev 15:4 “Who shall not fear You, O יהוה, and esteem Your Name? Because You alone are kind. Because all nations shall come and worship before You, for Your righteousnesses have been made manifest.”
Now, do we see how serious and Wonderful that a Nazirite vow can be? Look at what was written over Yeshua at His crucifiction: Joh_19:19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
I will try and transliterate this for you: Yeshua Hanetzari Vamalek Hayehudim. Do you see it? Do you now understand why the rabbis wanted Pilate to change what was written over Yeshua’s head? Let me add a little color to the situation: Yeshua Hanetzari Vamalek Hayehudim or YHVH.
This is one of the reasons our quest for truth is not only difficult but FUN: 2Th 2:9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power and signs and wonders of falsehood,
2Th 2:10 and with all deceit of unrighteousness in those perishing, because they did not receive the love of the truth, in order for them to be saved.
Now, how long does a Nazirite separate themself in their vow? Any amount of time. But, are you ready for this? If they come near a dead body, they have to start the count over. Do you get it? Once we draw near to the blood and body of Messiah our life starts over again. And not willy nilly. It has to be in accordance with Scripture. Seven days after they come in contact with a dead body they shave their head once again and on the eighth day they start over. Have we seen this in Scripture before? Lev 15:28 ‘But if she is cleansed of her discharge, then she shall count for herself seven days, and after that she is clean.
Lev 15:29 ‘And on the eighth day she takes for herself two turtledoves or two young pigeons, and shall bring them to the priest, to the door of the Tent of Appointment.
Lev 23:34 “Speak to the children of Yisra’ěl, saying, ‘On the fifteenth day of this seventh new moon is the Festival of Sukkot for seven days to יהוה.
Lev 23:35 ‘On the first day is a set-apart gathering, you do no servile work.
Lev 23:36 ‘For seven days you bring an offering made by fire to יהוה. On the eighth day there shall be a set-apart gathering for you, and you shall bring an offering made by fire to יהוה. It is a closing festival, you do no servile work.
Mat 8:22 But יהושע said to him, “Follow Me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”
Luk 9:59 And He said to another, “Follow Me,” but he said, “Master, let me first go and bury my father.”
Luk 9:60 And יהושע said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and announce the reign of Elohim.”
The eighth day is all about starting over. That is the day the hair of the Nazirite is cut, but what does it represent? Cutting hair can be a sign of rejection: Jer 7:29 Cut off your hair and throw it away, and take up a lamentation on the bare heights, for יהוה has rejected and forsaken the generation of His wrath.’
Or, of prophecy: Eze 5:1 “And you, son of man, take a sharp sword, take it as a barber’s razor, and you shall pass it over your head and your beard. And you shall take scales to weigh and divide the hair.
Eze 5:2 “Burn with fire one-third in the midst of the city when the days of the siege are completed. And you shall take one-third and strike around it with the sword, and scatter one-third in the wind. And I shall draw out a sword after them.
Eze 5:3 “And you shall take a few hairs from there and bind them in the edge of your garment.
And on the eighth day the Nazirite will drink wine: Luk 22:17 And taking the cup, giving thanks, He said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves,
Luk 22:18 for I say to you, I shall certainly not drink of the fruit of the vine until the reign of Elohim comes.”
The Aaronic blessing:
Of course you know that I do not believe that Yah’s Name is pronounced YAHWEH but rather YEHOVAH or YAHUAH or any other way. I may be wrong, like I so often am, but I find no verifiable proof that the Hebrews worshipped a minor god of the Ugaritic people. To me that would be even more proof to not pronounce His Name that way.
Let’s look at some of the key words used in this blessing:
H1288 – בּרך – bârak – BDB Definition: 1) to bless, kneel
H8104 – שׁמר – shâmar – BDB Definition: 1) to keep, guard, observe, give heed
H6440 – פּנה / פּנים – pânı̂ym / pâneh – BDB Definition: 1) face
H215 – אור – ‘ôr – BDB Definition: 1) to be or become light, shine
H2603 – חנן – chânan – BDB Definition: 1) to be gracious, show favour, pity
H7760 – שׂים / שׂוּם – śûm / śı̂ym – BDB Definition: 1) to put, place, set, appoint, make
H7965 – שׁלם / שׁלום – shâlôm – BDB Definition: 1) completeness, soundness, welfare, peace
Ahavah,
