Bemidbar (Numbers) 3

Verse 1 – This verse is very confusing. Why? Because nowhere in the chapter does it mention Mosheh’s generations. It only addresses Aharon’s. Perhaps it is a mistake. Possible, right? We have no proof that Mosheh had any children by his first wife, the Kushite woman> Num_12:1 Now Miryam and Aharon spoke against Mosheh because of the Kushite woman whom he had taken, for he had taken a Kushite woman.

In all of Torah we see Gereshom mentioned only three times but we discover an interesting note> Exo 18:1 And Yithro, the priest of Miḏyan, Mosheh’s father-in-law, heard of all that Elohim had done for Mosheh and for Yisra’ěl His people, that יהוה had brought Yisra’ěl out of Mitsrayim.

Exo 18:2 And Yithro, Mosheh’s father-in-law, took Tsipporah, the wife of Mosheh – after he had sent her back,

Exo 18:3 and her two sons, of whom the name of one was Gěreshom, for he said, “I have been a sojourner in a foreign land,”

Exo 18:4 and the name of the other was Eli‛ezer, for he said, “The Elohim of my father was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.”

 

Here is the only other reference I can find> 1Ch 23:15 The sons of Mosheh: Gěreshom and Eli‛ezer.

1Ch 23:16 The sons of Gěreshom: Sheḇu’ěl was the head.

1Ch 23:17 And the sons of Eli‛ezer: Reḥaḇyah was the head. And Eli‛ezer had no other sons, but the sons of Reḥaḇyah were very many.

 

So, do I feel that this is a mistake? No! And, here is why> Act 15:21 “For from ancient generations Mosheh has, in every city, those proclaiming him – being read in the congregations every Sabbath.”

 

Mat_8:4 And יהושע said to him, “See, mention it to no one. But go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Mosheh commanded, as a witness to them.”

 

Mat_19:7 They said to Him, “Why then did Mosheh command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?”

Mat_19:8 He said to them, “Because of the hardness of your hearts, Mosheh allowed you to put away your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.

 

Luk_16:29 “Aḇraham said to him, ‘They have Mosheh and the prophets, let them hear them.’

 

Mosheh in this sense represents Torah not the man and the Levites were to “minister” Torah to the Children of Yisra’el. Viewed in this light it would be perfectly natural for there to be no mention the sons of Mosheh.

 

Something we should remember is that Aharon was 3 years older than Mosheh but once again we see YHVH choose the younger over the elder. It was YHVH that made Mosheh a “father” figure to Aharon> Exo 4:16 “And he shall speak for you to the people. And it shall be that he shall be a mouth for you, and you shall be an elohim for him. ((Author’s note: Mighty one, great one, judge, magistrate. Does not mean god in this instance.))

 

Believe me, and I have a great deal of experience at this, big brothers do not like to listen to their little brothers, but it was Yah’s Spirit that caused Aharon to listen to Mosheh.

Verse 2 – Aharon’s sons: Nadab, Abihu, El’azar and Ithamar

Nadab – H5070 – נדב – nâdâb – BDB Definition: Nadab = “generous”
Abihu – H30 – אביהוּא – ‘ăbı̂yhû’ – BDB Definition: Abihu = “he is (my) father”
El’azar – H499 – אלעזר – ‘el‛âzâr – BDB Definition: Eleazar = “God has helped”
Ithamar – H385 – איתמר – ‘ı̂ythâmâr – BDB Definition: Ithamar = “coast of palms” ((An oasis))

YHVH (God) is generous and He is my Father and has helped me to an oasis (in the Spirit)

Psa 92:12 The righteous one flourishes like a palm tree, He grows like a cedar in Leḇanon.

 

Verse 3 – This verse contains a word that is often misunderstood many times because we use our own prejudices when we translate from language to another. The word is anointed = H4886 – משׁח – mâshach – BDB Definition: 1) to smear, anoint, spread a liquid ((Author’s note: this is a verb)). When people see the noun form of this word which is H4899 – משׁיח – mâshı̂yach – BDB Definition: 1) anointed, anointed one, people are very quick to use the word Messiah. It could possibly be Messiah but most often it should be translated “annointed one”: 1Sa 2:10 “Those who oppose יהוה are shattered, from the heavens He thunders against them. יהוה judges the ends of the earth, and gives strength to His sovereign, and exalts the horn of His anointed.” <<<<<<This is in reference to Samuel the priest

1Sa 2:11 And Elqanah went to his house at Ramah. But the youth served יהוה before Ěli the priest.

 

1Sa 12:3 “Look, here I am. Witness against me before יהוה and before His anointed: Whose ox have I taken, or whose donkey have I taken, or whom have I oppressed? Whom have I abused, or from whose hand have I received any bribe with which to blind my eyes? – then I restore it to you.”

1Sa 12:4 And they said, “You have not oppressed us or abused us, nor have you taken any bribe from anyone’s hand.”

1Sa 12:5 So he said to them, “יהוה is witness against you, and His anointed is witness today, that you have found naught in my hand.” And they answered, “He is witness.” ((Refers to King Saul))

 

1Sa 24:9 And Dawiḏ said to Sha’ul, “Why do you listen to the words of men who say, ‘See, Dawiḏ seeks to do you evil’?

1Sa 24:10 “See, this day your eyes have seen that יהוה gave you today into my hand in the cave, and one said to kill you. But my eye pardoned you, and I said, ‘I do not stretch out my hand against my master, for he is the anointed of יהוה.((Refers to King Saul))

 

1Sa 16:6 And it came to be, when they came, that he saw Eliyaḇ and thought, “The anointed of יהוה is indeed before Him.” ((Refers to David))

1Sa 16:7 But יהוה said to Shemu’ěl, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him, for not as man sees, for man looks at the eyes, but יהוה looks at the heart.”

1Sa 16:8 Then Yishai called Aḇinaḏaḇ, and made him pass before Shemu’ěl. And he said, “Neither has יהוה chosen this one.”

1Sa 16:9 Next Yishai made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has יהוה chosen this one.”

1Sa 16:10 And Yishai made seven of his sons pass before Shemu’ěl. And Shemu’ěl said to Yishai, “יהוה has not chosen these.”

1Sa 16:11 And Shemu’ěl said to Yishai, “Are these all the young men?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and see, he is tending the sheep.” And Shemu’ěl said to Yishai, “Send and bring him, for we do not turn round till he comes here.”

1Sa 16:12 And he sent and brought him in. And he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and handsome. And יהוה said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is the one!” ((H4886 to verb form))

 

In all, mashiyach is used 39 times in 38 verses as outlined below and no one really has a problem with 37 occurances, it is just the two found in Daniel, Chapter 9 verses 25 and 26 that people get dogmatic and insist that it means Messiah rather than anointed. Once again, Torah helps us find the true intent of the Scripture:

Not only were Aharon’s sons anointed but also consecrated. Normally we would see the word “qadash” used for consecrated/ordained but here we see two words used instead of one for a reason – “malay yawdam” – מִלֵא יְָּּדָּם. Both words can be used in a sense of consecration but used together they tend to convey the idea of being set-apart in power or “to fill the hands”. Remember, they were anointed with oil and blood on their right ear, right thumb and right big toe so that they would “hear” the Word, “do” the Word and the right big toe so that they would “walk” in the Way. Now, think about a Scripture which gives us an allusion of filling our hands. Luk 9:62 But יהושע said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the reign of Elohim.” ((Was this the Scripture you were thinking about.))

 

When using a primitive plow both of your hands are filled and all of your attention must be focused far ahead of you so that you can plow straight for an object, a tree or fencepost, in the distance. You must not take your eyes off of the object but plow straight for it and in so doing, when you reach the turn row and turn your horse, mule, ox, whatever around you will see the straight row that you plowed. Now, just step into the furrow and follow in the Way(of the straight row) and your next row will be straight, too. If you look back to see if you are plowing straight you will end up with a crooked row every time.

 

Verse 4 – Nadab and Abihu died for offering “strange fire” before YHVH. The priests were supposed to take coals from the bronze altar of sacrifice and use those coals to burn the incense and light the menorah and they failed to do that. Lesson learned: there are no shortcuts in YHVH’s Kingdom.

 

Verses 5-6 – Verse 6 reminds me of the saying “build it and they will come”. How? Bring them near, set them before, and they will serve. First, look back at the preceding 5 verses and tell me whether or not you can find a direct object in the sentence structure. This is very important. The reason I want you to look at the previous sentences is so you can find the object which receives the action of the verb(s). Why is this important? Because we see the first occurrence of H853 in Verse 6 and it relates to “draw near”. Draw near is used many times, about 280, but this is the one that I relate to: Isa 48:15 “I, I have spoken, I have also called him, I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous.

Isa 48:16 “Come near to Me, hear this: I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, I was there. And now the Master יהוה has sent Me, and His Spirit.”

Isa 48:17 Thus said יהוה, your Redeemer, the Set-apart One of Yisra’ěl, “I am יהוה your Elohim, teaching you what is best, leading you by the way you should go.

((Who is being spoken of here? Isn’t it strange that it is “draw near” when we see our first H853?))

H7126 – קרב – qârab – BDB Definition: 1) to come near, approach, enter into, draw near

Verse 7 – “And shall guard” (H853) his duty  H4931 – משׁמרת – mishmereth – BDB Definition: 1) guard, charge, function, obligation, service, watch

“to do (H853) the service of the Dwelling Place.”

Verse 8 – “And they shall guard (H853) all the furnishings

… to do (H853) the service of the Dwelling Place.”

Verse 9 – “And you shall give (H853) the Levites

Give = H5414 – נתן – nâthan – BDB Definition: 1) to give, put, set

 

Verse 10 – “… and they shall guard (H853) their priesthood”

 

Verse 12 – “Now look (or behold in KJV), I Myself have taken (H853) the Levites

Look = H2009 – הנּה – hinnêh – BDB Definition: 1) behold, lo, see, if (Now look at it in paleo-Hebrew)

Behold, the Son is revealed!

 

Taken = H3947 – לקח – lâqach – BDB Definition: 1) to take, get, fetch, lay hold of, seize, receive, acquire, buy, bring, marry, take a wife, snatch, take away

 

Verse 15 – “Register (H853) the Children of Levi”

Register = H6485 – פּקד – pâqad – BDB Definition: 1) to attend to, muster, number, reckon, visit, punish, appoint, look after, care for (verb)

“Register every male from a new moon old ((This is a beautiful Word Picture staring us in the face.))

The word used for old is Ben = son and the word for new moon = chodesh so the picture being given to us is “To register the sons(children) of a renewal”. Psa_51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O Elohim, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. We are the children of the renewal.

 

Jer_31:31 “See, the days are coming,” declares יהוה, “when I shall make a renewed covenant with the house of Yisra’ěl and with the house of Yehuḏah,

 

Mat_26:28 “For this is My blood, that of the renewed covenant, which is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Mar_14:24 And He said to them, “This is My blood, that of the renewed covenant, which is shed for many.

 

2Co_5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Messiah, he is a renewed creature – the old matters have passed away, see, all matters have become renewed!

In Exile we are made White and are a Renowned Assembly, an Exalted People in Association with El, who Is My Strength, and are no longer Bitter and Sick and Yielding.

((Author’s note: The occurance of (H853) ended in Verse 15 and did not reoccur until Verse 40 where the topic of redemption of the firstborn begins. We see it in verses 40-42, 45, 49-51.)) Tit 2:13 looking for the blessed expectation and esteemed appearance of the great Elohim and our Saviour יהושע Messiah,

Tit 2:14 who gave Himself for us, to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for Himself a people, His own possession, ardent for good works.

Verses 46-51 – The ransom is paid in silver, five shekels per head from the silver of the ransom of the firstborn of Yisra’el. Verse 47 once again shows us that a shekel is 20 gerahs. We need to know this for Daniel’s prophecy.
