Bemidbar (Numbers) 27 — The Daughters of Tselophhad Should Be Our Example

Lesson date: 4/1/5857AA

Verses 1-11 – There are many things that I admire about the daughters of Tselophhad. First, was their courage. Tselophhad was an Yira’elite, from the Tribe of Menashsheh, that had come up out of Mitsrayim and died in the wilderness. He had 5 daughters and no sons. Mosheh had outlined the process for each family to have an inheritance in the Promised Land and it made no provision for this situation where there was no male heir. If the daughters of Tselophhad had not spoken up then this would have denied them an inheritance and the loss of their father’s name. They did not sneak around and asked Mosheh on the sly but rather boldly went before Mosheh, El’azar and the entire congregation of Yisra’el, which had it been me I think I would have felt somewhat intimidated: Heb 4:15 For we do not have a High Priest unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who was tried in all respects as we are, apart from sin.

Heb 4:16 Therefore, let us come boldly to the throne of favour, in order to receive compassion, and find favour for timely help.

Secondly, their knowledge of Torah. They did not wish for their father’s name to be forgotten or for him to be thought of as one of the rebellious ones. According to Torah there was no provision for a woman to inherit a possession: H272 – אחזּה – ‘ăchûzzâh – BDB Definition: 1) possession, property. The root word H270 – ahaz – to grab or lay hold of : Exo 20:12 “Respect your father and your mother, so that your days are prolonged upon the soil which יהוה your Elohim is giving you.

Also, it was an abomination to let your brother’s name pass from the earth and incumbent upon the man brother to raise up a son in his brother’s name. Perhaps Tselophhad’s wife was too old to bear children at this point, nevertheless the daughters wanted to ensure him an inheritance forever.

Thirdly, they were respectful in their request. They did not demand but asked to have an inheritance bestowed upon them. They “pleaded” for a right-ruling. This should be an example for us in that we need a correct right-ruling we go before YHVH and asked Him to guide us according to His Torah and not our desires. Also, those of us who are coming out from the inherited lies of our ancestors want a possession in YHVH’s Kingdom we must do so by “grabbing hold” of YHVH’s Torah and living our lives by His Right-Rulings and not the ways of the church: Job 17:9 And the righteous holds (H270) to his way, and he who has clean hands becomes stronger and stronger.

Many people seek an inheritance that is promised in YHVH’s Kingdom but are unwilling to hold to YHVH’s but would rather follow their own way.

Fourthly, because of their courage, humility and respectful nature in coming before YHVH they became known to countless generations as being faithful to Yah’s Torah and having a precedent set for all time here is this chapter. If you will excuse the expression, their story is sandwiched in between the new census for the new army of Yisra’el and Yehoshua being made the new leader. This is not bad company by any means.

Verses 12-23 – Look at the name of the mountain –  עֲבָרִּים – ‘abarim. Believe it or not this is an important detail: ‘abarim = regions beyond, places that are across on the other side. It comes from the root word ‘abar – H5674. Here is another word taken from the same root word: H5680 – עברי – ‛ibrı̂y – BDB Definition: Hebrew = “one from beyond”

See, I came from a region beyond, it was called the Southern Baptist Region and we were right about everything. If you don’t believe me, just ask another Southern Baptist, they’ll explain it to you. Paul, you remember him, said: Php_2:12 So that, my beloved, as you always obeyed – not only in my presence, but now much rather in my absence – work out your own deliverance with fear and trembling,

I think this proves Paul was a Methodist because we believed “once saved always saved”. I would put the Scripture for that in here but my E-Sword is acting up and won’t bring it up. Must be a glitch. Was it a mountain you ask? Of course, one of the highest. You never had to repent for or from anything, unless you were caught dancing, then you had to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. About like a Catholic having their name mentioned in the mass on Sunday. Am I trying to make a joke about this chapter of Torah? No. I am trying to show you how tenaciously we clung to things that were not even found in Scripture. We lived in complete ignorance of YHVH’s Torah and, proud of it I might add.

Joh 1:17 for the Torah was given through Mosheh – the favour and the truth came through יהושע Messiah.

Please read and reread verses 13-15 carefully. Mosheh, who had been hand picked from birth, actually before, been faithful in numerous trials was reminded why he could not enter into the Promised Land, because he rebelled against the Mouth of YHVH: H6310 – פּה – peh – BDB Definition: 1) mouth, also word: Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with Elohim, and the Word was Elohim.

Exo 23:20 “See, I am sending a Messenger before you to guard you in the way and to bring you into the place which I have prepared.

Exo 23:21 “Be on guard before Him and obey His voice. Do not rebel against Him, for He is not going to pardon your transgression, for My Name is in Him.

Look at verses 15 & 16, after having been told why he could not go into the land his first and foremost concern is for Yisra’el and for them to have a shepherd: Joh_10:11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

Mar_6:34 And having gone out, יהושע saw a large crowd and was moved with compassion for them because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. And He began to teach them many matters.

You want to see something really neat? Mosheh’s task was now complete. He had lead them to the very edge of the Promised Land but now a new leader was to come and fill the role of Leader and his name was Yehoshu’a: Gal 3:24 Therefore the Torah(Mosheh) became our trainer unto Messiah(Yehoshu’a), in order to be declared right by belief. Mosheh could only bring us so far and then Yehoshu’a had to lead us into the Promised Land, the Kingdom of Elohim: Luk 16:16 “The Torah and the prophets are until Yoḥanan. Since then the reign of Elohim is being announced, and everyone is doing violence upon it.

Again, look at verse 16. Notice anything unusual?

There is much, much more here and we will talk about it during out study but, this is a start.

Ahavah vberakhot
