Verse 1 – טוֹב בְעֵינֵי יהוה לְבָּרֵךְ אֶת־ ישְרָּאֵל This is a very important phrase and we need to remember it.
- The word in blue is H2895 – Tove or Tobe – good
- The word in yellow is H5869 – ‘ayin – eye. The initial בְ (beyt) is a prefix that means “in”.
- The word in red is H853 – eyth – the infamous definite article of a direct object.
- The word in Magenta No.5 is H3478 – Yisra’el
Toḇ b’ayney יהוה l’ḇareḵ et Yisra’ĕl – It is good in His, YHVH’s eyes to bless Yisra’el.
I will go out on a big linguistic limb and say that this is a reflexive statement in the Hebrew and let me show you why: Mat_3:17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved(first born) Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Joh 3:16 “For Elohim so loved the world that He gave His only brought-forth Son, so that everyone who believes in Him should not perish but possess everlasting life.
Exo 4:22 “And you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘Thus said יהוה, “Yisra’ěl is My son, My first-born,
Joh_5:46 “For if you believed Mosheh, you would have believed Me, since he wrote about Me.
Rev 1:8 “I am the ‘Aleph’ and the ‘Taw’(H853), Beginning and End,” says יהוה “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”((An oldie but a goodie))
Look in Exodus 4:22 and see how YHVH describes His Son Yisra’el and then in Matthew 3:17 and John 3:16 and make the connection that we see through the eyes of Messiah in John 5:46.
*What is the Hebrew name for the book of Numbers? Bemidbar. Look at where Bil’am set his face toward; the Wilderness, Bemidbar!! “B” is a prefix that would translate to “in”. Remember also that the letter ‘mem’ has the connotation of water, chaos or to come from (like a stream from a rock). Remember also that the root word is H1696 daw-bar, word. So, the implication is that the Children of Yisra’el had to go into the Wilderness to ‘hear’ the Word (John 1). A lot of times I know that I have to get away from everything to ‘hear’ the Word. Another way of interpreting the meaning of the Hebrew word bemidbar is: the place of the Word. (( Matt. 4:1,Mark 1:11, Luke 4:1 all speak about Yeshua going into the wilderness and we also see in Matt. 3:3, Mark 1:3, Luke 3:4 and John 1:23 (Isa. 40:3) all speak of John the Immerser as being the voice of one crying in the bemidbar, wilderness. Don’t worry, it is just a coincidence. These are not the ‘droids you are looking for.))
*Even without a TV it is still easy to get distracted by news, the internet, life’s problems or just plain being tired. Sometimes, we are so busy staying busy that we can’t hear the Word, when He speaks. This is the Hebrew letter ‘mem’, chaos or distraction.
*So, let’s review; we see that Bil’am has set his face to the wilderness (bemidbar), instead of using divination and sorcery, to look to and hear the Word of Elohim. What we have come to learn in our Torah studies is that the Wilderness is the place where we as a called out, redeemed and set-apart people learn to hear the True voice of Elohim, as we turn away from the ‘noise’ of the world and its inherited lies and pay attention to hearing His Truth: Psa_119:142 Your righteousness is righteousness forever, And Your Torah is truth.
Dan_9:13 “As it is written in the Torah of Mosheh, all this evil has come upon us, and we have not entreated the face of יהוה our Elohim, to turn back from our crookednesses, and to study Your truth.
Neh_9:13 “And You came down on Mount Sinai, and spoke with them from the heavens, and gave them straight right-rulings and Torah of truth, good laws and commands.
Mal_2:6 “The Torah of truth was in his mouth, and unrighteousness was not found on his lips. He walked with Me in peace and straightness, and turned many away from crookedness.
Joh_1:17 for the Torah was given through Mosheh – the favour and the truth came through יהושע Messiah.
Rom_2:20 an instructor of foolish ones, a teacher of babes, having the form of knowledge and of the truth in the Torah.
We have come to the point where we see that we as believers are in a strange land, the Wilderness, and it is a strange place where we as a called out, redeemed and set-apart people learn to hear the True voice of Elohim, as we turn away from the ‘noise’ of the world and its inherited lies and pay attention to hearing His Truth. Think about what John the apostle saw when he said the following:
Rev_12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by Elohim, to be nourished there one thousand two hundred and sixty days.
Rev_12:14 And the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, to fly into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent.
Why was the wilderness, bemidbar, a refuge for His people after coming out of Egypt, a time of perfecting, and why will it be a time of perfecting in the ‘End Time’? Only in the wilderness can we hear His Voice, His Truth and His Word.
In the world today there are so many lies and distractions that we could be caught up in the working of delusion without even knowing it. But as His set-apart believers if we voluntarily go into the the wilderness looking for the Truth He will reveal it: Rev 17:3 And he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast covered with names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
Ask 100 different denominations what this verse of Scripture means and you may get 200 different answers but through the lense of Torah we know the Truth. Isn’t it amazing that the Truth is not found in a mega-church with 20 or 30,000 members who give at least 2.5 million dollars in tithes on Sunday and mail-in more throughout the week, have a day care, K-12 school, a university, a worldwide mission program, their own satellite TV channel, End Time news channel and maybe even a shortwave radio station proclaiming the Gospel 24/7 but we are to go into the Wilderness, where all of these things are just distractions, to hear the Truth.
Sorry! I kinda got carried away with verse 1. My bad!
In talking about blessing I want to include the following, taken from Craig Stevenson’s Torah Study of the same chapter and notice how he breaks down the Aaronic blessing based on the depth of meaning for each word. This is in his words not mine, which are a lot better than mine, by the way:
1 – BLESS – is the Hebrew word – בָּרַךְ baraḵ – Strong’s H1288 and means, ‘to abundantly bless’ and literally carries the meaning, ‘to kneel or bow down, to show respect, to bring a gift to another while kneeling out of respect’.
2 – GUARD/KEEP – in the Hebrew is שָּמַר shamar – Strong’s H8104 – ‘keep watch, preserve, guard, protect’.
3 – FACE – comes from the root word – פָּּנִים paniym or פָּּנֶה paneh – Strong’s 6441 – ‘face, faces, appearance, presence’ and can also carry the understanding of the presence or wholeness of being.
4 – SHINE – אוֹר ‘or’ – Strong’s H215 – ‘light (noun) and give light or shine (verb) – bring illumination’.
5 – FAVOUR – חָּנַן ḥanan – Strong’s H2603 – ‘merciful, favour’ and also carries the meaning of providing protection.
6 – GIVE –שוּם suwm – Strong’s H7760 – ‘to put, to place, to set; set down in a fixed and arranged place’
7 – PEACE – שָּלוֹם shalom – Strong’s H7965 – ‘wholeness, completeness, soundness, welfare, peace, health, prosperity, well-being, safety, protection’, and is from the primitive root שָּלֵם shalem – Strong’s H7999 which means, ‘to be complete or sound, rewarded, make full restitution’.
7 powerful words that are contained in this blessing as commanded by יהוה that not only blesses us and puts His Name upon us, but also wonderfully expresses His marvelous love and compassion for us and what He does for us through His blessing us as He in a sense has ‘bowed down/ come down and given us the gift of life through His own as he promises to guard and protect us and keep us safe in Him. This blessing in light of the understanding of the meaning of these 7 words could be expresses in English as follows:
יהוה WILL KNEEL BEFORE YOU PRESENTING GIFTS AND WILL GUARD YOU WITH A HEDGE OF PROTECTION.
יהוה WILL ILLUMINATE THE WHOLENESS OF HIS BEING TOWARD YOU BRINGING ORDER AND HE WILL BEAUTIFY YOU.
יהוה WILL LIFT UP HIS WHOLENESS OF BEING AND LOOK UPON YOU AND HE WILL SET IN PLACE ALL YOU NEED TO BE WHOLE AND COMPLETE.
Verse 2 – And Bil’am lifted up his eyes: began to prophecy: * Isa 49:18 “Lift up your eyes round about and see, all of them gather together and come to you. As I live,” declares יהוה, “you shall put on all of them as an ornament, and bind them on you as a bride does.
Isa_51:6 “Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look on the earth beneath, for the heavens shall vanish like smoke, and the earth wear out like a garment, and those who dwell in it die as gnats. But My deliverance is forever, and My righteousness is not broken.
Isa_60:4 “Lift up your eyes all around and see: all of them have gathered, they have come to you; your sons come from afar, and your daughters are supported on the side.
Jer_3:2 “Lift up your eyes to the bare heights and see: where have you not lain with men? Besides the ways you have sat for them like an Araḇian in the wilderness. And you made the land unclean with your whorings and your evil.
Jer_13:20 Lift up your eyes and see those who come from the north. Where is the flock that was given to you, your fair sheep?
Eze_8:5 And He said to me, “Son of man, please lift your eyes toward the north.” And I lifted my eyes northward, and north of the altar gate I saw this image of jealousy in the entrance.
Eze_23:27 ‘And I shall put an end to your wickedness and to your whorings from the land of Mitsrayim, so that you do not lift your eyes to them neither remember Mitsrayim any more.’
Verse 8 – Notice the allusion to the horns of the wild ox once more.
Verse 14 – Up til now Bil’am has pretty much functioned as a prophet of YHVH. It is now that Bil’am advises Balaq about the destiny of Yisra’el.
Verse 17 – Presented by Brother Mark in the interview.

Yes, we have already read Numbers 24, but the problem was we have not studied Numbers 24. Reading the Word and studying the Word are two totally different things. So forgive me for backtracking to Numbers 24.
In 24:1 we see a change in Bil’am. He realizes that it pleased YHVH to bless Yisra’el and did not use sorcery or divination at this point. Let’s look at the phrase in verse one: “it pleased יהוה to bless Yisra’ĕl” .
Let’s look at the Hebrew to see what it actually says: טוֹב בְעֵינֵי יהוה לְבָּרֵךְ אֶת־ ישְרָּאֵל
From right to left: Toḇ b’ayney יהוה l’ḇareḥ et Yisra’ĕl. The Hebrew word for good is the primary verb טוֹב toḇ – Strong’s H2895 and carries the meaning, ‘pleasant, good, agreeable, beautiful, to be pleasing, done well’. The word b’ayney means ‘in his eyes’, with the letter ‘ ב’- ‘beyt’ at the front of the word, which renders ‘in, in the’, and the root word it is referring to being ‘in’ is עין ayin – Strong’s H5869 which means ‘eye’. The term ‘to bless’ is l’ḇareḥ with the letter ‘ ל’ – ‘lamed’ at the front of the word meaning, ‘to’ and the word for ‘bless’ is the root verb בָּרַּךְ baraḵ – Strong’s H1288 and means, ‘to abundantly bless’ and literally carries the meaning, ‘to kneel or bow down, to show respect, to bring a gift to another while kneeling out of respect’. The use of the ‘et’ – אֶת is an untranslated particle in Hebrew, often described in grammars (somewhat superficially) as the sign of the direct object after a transitive verb; and the function of ‘et’ – אֶת is to emphasize the word to which it is attached. In other words – who is it good in the eyes of יהוה to bless? – Yisra’ĕl! Please remember, I call ‘et’ or ‘ayth’ (H853) a prophetic marker.
Look to Revelation 1:8: “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” By looking to the Scriptures we can see that it was more accurately translated: “I am the ‘Aleph’ and the ‘Taw’, Beginning and End,” says יהוה “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” What is the Aleph and the Tav? ‘et’/’ayth’ (H853)!!
Please consider this one passage, not even a whole verse of scripture, that carries meaning from Genesis 3:1 to Revelation 1:8 and beyond, actually. Why Genesis 3:1? Remember last week we discussed the word used for sorcery and discovered it was naw-khawsh H5173 and serpent (Gen. 3:1) is H5173 nakh-ash, both derived from the same root H5172. What is the difference? H5175 and H5173 are both nouns derived from the same root word H5172, a verb. Scripture should be consistent from beginning to end. If it is not, you made a mistake. Go back and read it again!
What is the Hebrew name for the book of Numbers?
Even without a TV it is still easy to get distracted by news, the internet, life’s problems or just plain being tired. Sometimes, we are so busy staying busy that we can’t hear the Word, when He speaks. This is the Hebrew letter ‘mem’, chaos or distraction.
So, let’s review; we see that Bil’am has set his face to the wilderness (bemidbar), instead of using divination and sorcery, to look to and hear the Word of Elohim. What we have come to learn in our Torah studies is that the Wilderness is the place where we as a called out, redeemed and set-apart people learn to hear the True voice of Elohim, as we turn away from the ‘noise’ of the world and its inherited lies and pay attention to hearing His Truth.
Psa_119:142 Your righteousness is righteousness forever, And Your Torah is truth.
Now, here is the next part of the puzzle; it is only in the wilderness that we can see the Enemy: Rev_17:3 And he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast covered with names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
This is a mystery to the church, and unto the world. Why? Because the wilderness is where we go to find the Truth not a gilded hall or crystal cathedral, but the Wilderness, where the Truth was first proclaimed unto Israel. But, if you don’t believe in Israel or the Truth why worry? Right?
Now for verse 2. “And Bilʽam lifted up his eyes and saw Yisra’ĕl encamped according to their tribes. And the Spirit of Elohim came upon him.” When you read “lift up your eyes” this is a clear reference to prophecy or a prophetic utterance.
Gen_13:14 And after Lot had separated from him, יהוה said to Abram, “Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward,
Gen_31:12 “And He said, ‘Lift your eyes now and see, all the rams which leap on the flocks are streaked, speckled, and mottled, for I have seen all that Laban is doing to you.
Deu_3:27 ‘Go up to the top of Pisgah, and lift up your eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and look with your eyes, for you do not pass over this Yardĕn.
Deu_4:19 and lest you lift up your eyes to the heavens, and shall see the sun, and the moon, and the stars – all the host of the heavens – and you be drawn away into bowing down to them and serving them, which יהוה your Elohim has allotted to all the peoples under all the heavens.
Psa_121:1 I lift up my eyes to the hills; Where does my help come from?
Psa_123:1 I shall lift up my eyes Unto You who dwell in the heavens.
Isa_40:26 Lift up your eyes on high and see. Who has created these? He who is bringing out their host by number, He calls them all by name, by the greatness of His might and the strength of His power – not one is missing.
Isa_49:18 “Lift up your eyes round about and see, all of them gather together and come to you.
Eze_33:25 “Therefore say to them, ‘Thus said the Master יהוה, “You eat meat with blood, and you lift up your eyes toward your idols, and shed blood. Should you then possess the land?
Zec_5:5 And the messenger who was speaking with me came out and said to me, “Lift up your eyes now, and see what this is that is going forth.”
Joh_4:35 “Do you not say, ‘There are still four months, and the harvest comes’? See, I say to you, lift up your eyes and see the fields, for they are white for harvest – already!
So where is the prophecy? “Encamped according to their tribes.” Encamped is H7931, sha-kan, to settle down, abide, dwell, tabernacle, reside. Does this sound familiar? Look no further than John 1:14: oh 1:14 And the Word became flesh and pitched His tent among us, and we saw His esteem, esteem as of an only brought-forth of a father, complete in favour and truth. So, what does this particular scripture tell us? That Yeshua was born on the first day of Sukkot. Why? Because you pitch your tent on the first day. Now, it is not all that is being indicated in Numbers 24:2. Let’s look: according to their tribes. Means we are there, the tribe of Ephrayim (Gen. 48:17-22). Many people believe that YHVH is through with Yisra’el but Sha’ul declares just the opposite: Rom 11:1 I say then, has Elohim rejected His people? Let it not be! For I also am a Yisra’ĕlite, of the seed of Aḇraham, of the tribe of Binyamin.
Rom 11:2 Elohim has not rejected His people whom He knew beforehand.1 Or do you not know what the Scripture says of Ěliyahu, how he pleads with Elohim against Yisra’ĕl, saying, Footnote: 1Ps. 94:14.
Rom 11:3 “יהוה, they have killed Your prophets and overthrown Your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life”?
Rom 11:4 But what does the answer of Elohim say to him? “I have left for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baʽal.”
Rom 11:5 So therefore also, at this present time a remnant according to the choice of favour has come to be.
And we also see here: Gal 3:27 For as many of you as were immersed into Messiah have put on Messiah.
Gal 3:28 There is not Yehudite nor Greek, there is not slave nor free, there is not male and female, for you are all one in Messiah יהושע.
Gal 3:29 And if you are of Messiah, then you are seed of Abraham, and heirs according to promise.
So all believers in Messiah are actually the children of Abraham, Yisra’el. There is no other inheritance or promise: Deu 29:14 “And not with you alone I am making this covenant and this oath,
Deu 29:15 but with him who stands here with us today before יהוה our Elohim, as well as with him who is not here with us today”. That is us. We were not there that day but we were in the loins of our ancestors. This doesn’t speak of you? Read: Heb 7:9 And one might say that through Abraham even Lĕwi, who received tithes, gave tithes,
Heb 7:10 for he was still in the loins of his father when Malkitsedeq met him. So, we see that we were there in the loins of our ancestors according to the faith.
Please carefully look at verse 3: “And he took up his proverb and said,”. The first word that stands out is “his”. Then the second word is “proverb”, H4912 proverb, parable, you know like this: Eze_20:49 Then said I, Ah Lord GOD! they say of me, Doth he not speak parables? (H4912)
Mat_13:3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;
Mat_13:10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?
Mat_13:13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
Mat_13:34 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:
Mat_13:35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.
Mat_13:53 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence.
Mat_21:45 And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.
Mat_22:1 And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said,
Mar_3:23 And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?
Mar_4:2 And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine,
Mar_4:11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:
Mar_4:13 And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables?
Mar_4:33 And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it.
Mar_12:1 And he began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.
Luk_8:10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.
So, we see Bil’am speaking HIS parable or proverb. Look at verse 4: the saying of him who hears the words of Ěl, who sees the vision of the Almighty, who falls down, with eyes opened wide: We see that he left out a part: Numbers 24:2(b)And the Spirit of Elohim came upon him. It was not because of the power of sorcery or divination that Bil’am could foretell the future but by the Grace (chesed=H2617) of the Almighty through the power of the Holy Spirit. Grace/mercy is mentioned 276 times in scripture and 59 of those times are in the B’rit Hadasha (New Testament). That means ‘chesed’ is mentioned 217 times in the ‘old’ Testament, almost 4 times as many times as the B’rit Hadasha.
In verse 5 we see a play on words. “How good are your tents (Ohel H168), O Ya’aqob, and your dwellings(Mishkan H4908), O Yisra’el.” Why is this a play on words? Both words mean “tents”. In Leviticus 1:1 the word for tent is “ohel”: “And יהוה called to Mosheh, and spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying”. And in Exodus 38:21 the word for Dwelling Place is “mishkan”: These were the appointments of the Dwelling Place, the Dwelling Place of the Witness, which was appointed by the command of Mosheh, for the service of the Lĕwites, by the hand of Ithamar, son of Aharon the priest.
In verse 6 the word employed to mean “like wadis” is כִנְחָּלִים – ‘kinḥaliym’, which is from the root word נַּחְלָּה naḥlah – Strong’s H5158 which means, ‘torrent, torrent valley, wadi, brook, ravine, stream’. In New Mexico we would call these arroyos, which are dry most of the year but can be dangerous during rainy seasons. Same in Israel. Look what Amos says about nahlah: Amo 5:24 “And let right-ruling roll on like water, and righteousness like a mighty stream.” And now David: Psa 36:8 “They are filled from the fatness of Your house, And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.” It it giving the idea of over abundance, like a cup running over.
Big prophecy alert in verse 7: and his seed is in many waters. Here we see the allusion to the fact that Jacob’s seed will be in many nations around the world.
The reference to Agag is not the same Agag we see in I Samuel 15:8-33 but is in fact the title for the king of the Amelekites, like Kaiser or Tzar (Kaiser, Caesar, Tzar are taken from a Hebrew word as well.)
Once again in verse 8 we see the allusion to El as the “horns of a wild ox”.
We see the praise make the comparison to a lion (Judah-Gen. 49:9). Up to verse 13 Bil’am has pretty well done what he was supposed to do: “What יהוה speaks, that I speak’?” Of course, this is a declaration, not a question. But here is where Bil’am goes too far. In a game of Simon says you only do what Simon says, but in prophecying the future you only say what יהוה says.
Is this a legitimate prophecy? Yes it is but he was not told to do so by YHVH. So, the trouble we see in Chapter 25 may be a direct result of Bil’am saying to much or TMI.
Ahavah vberakhot
