About the only time people think about time is when they have too little of it to do what they desire, want or need(?) to do. One of my favorite questions that I ask people relative to time is: “How many people on their death bed wish they had enough time to spend one more day at work?” I can think of a lot of things that I wish I had the time to do besides go to work, i.e. make love to your mate, hold your children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren one more time and tell them that you love them, or perhaps to make a decision to serve YHVH just one time like He desires us to do. I think any or all of these would be preferable to going to work.
Going to work, YUK! I basically dropped out of the workforce at the age of 50. My Dad told me at a young age, “Figure out what it is that you truly love doing, do it, and get someone to pay you for it and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” Very sound advice. The only problem with this advice was that it took me until the age of 50 to figure out what it was I truly enjoyed and how to get someone to pay me to do it. I won’t elaborate on it because it isn’t anything that you would probably enjoy doing any way. The important part is, that it taught me, to reevaluate the way that I looked at time and this lead from one thing to the next.
time
tīm
noun
- A nonspatial continuum in which events occur in apparently irreversible succession from the past through the present to the future.
- An interval separating two points on this continuum; a duration.
- A number, as of years, days, or minutes, representing such an interval.
From The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition
This is the shortest definition of time that I could find and it sort of makes sense and in this study I am going to use definition Number 3. We will talk about seconds, minutes, hours, days week, months and years but I will need to define them so we can play on a level playing field.
First, what is a day? For purposes of this study it will be the time from one sunset to the next sunset. Now, stop and think about it, this is important if one sunset to next sunset time frame is after the winter solstice then the interval from one sunset to the next will get increasingly longer, whereas if the interval takes place after the summer solstice the interval will get shorter, but we are going to infer that these time periods will “average” out somehow.
What is an hour? For the purposes of this study an hour is equal to a 1/24th division of the interval between sunsets regardless of what time of year it is.
What is a minute? A minute is a one sixtieth (1/60) division of an hour on any given day.
What is a second? A second will be equal to one sixtieth (1/60) division of any minute of any given day.
Wow! That was so simple. Heads up, here comes the hard part. What constitutes a month? How many days should we allot each month and based on what phenomenon? We can’t use the sun because it doesn’t care and will shine no matter what except, for a short period of time during an eclipse and eclipses occur only 1 to 3 times a year.
Okay, what about using the moon? It seems to occur in regular, measurable cycles but how frequent are those cycles? And, it also effects the tides and has a role in a woman’s monthly cycle. Let’s try and find out.
Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noaḥ’s life, in the second new moon, the seventeenth day of the moon, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of the heavens were opened.
Wow! We just found a wealth of knowledge. Noah knew he had lived 600 years and he knew it was the 17th day of a second moon’s cycle. Well, that adds more questions like, how many days are there in a lunar cycle and how many months are there in a year? Let’s keep looking and maybe Noah can help us with this.
Gen 8:3 And the waters receded steadily from the earth, and at the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters diminished.
Gen 8:4 And in the seventh new moon, the seventeenth day of the new moon, the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat.
Wow! We have some great information here. The rain began on the 17th day of the 2nd month and lasted 150 days and the ark came to rest in the 7th month on the 17th day. This is great, now let’s do the math: 7-2 = 5 and 150 ÷ 5 = 30. Now we know without a doubt that there 30 days per month. But is that right? It seems like some months are longer than others. Maybe Noah can help us a little more.
Gen 8:5 And the waters decreased steadily until the tenth new moon. In the tenth new moon, on the first day of the new moon, the tops of the mountains became visible.
Gen 8:6 And it came to be, at the end of forty days, that Noaḥ opened the window of the ark which he had made,
Gen 8:7 and he sent out a raven, which kept going out and turning back (? How long was this?) until the waters had dried up from the earth.
This helps a little bit but we don’t have a time frame for the raven. Let’s keep reading.
Gen 8:8 Then he sent out a dove from him, to see if the waters had receded from the face of the ground.
Gen 8:9 But the dove found no resting place for its feet and returned into the ark to him, for the waters were on the face of all the earth. So he put out his hand and took it, and pulled it into the ark to himself.
Gen 8:10 And he waited yet another seven days, and again he sent the dove out from the ark.
This helps us with the problem of the raven because it states “yet another 7 days” so there must have been a previous period of 7 days and that gives us 14 days plus 40 equals 54 days. This is good info. What else did Noah do?
Gen 8:11 And the dove came to him in the evening, and see, a freshly plucked olive leaf was in its mouth. And Noaḥ knew that the waters had receded from the earth.
Gen 8:12 And he waited yet another seven days and sent out the dove, which did not return to him again.
Gen 8:13 And it came to be in the six hundred and first year, in the first month, the first day of the new moon, that the waters were dried up from the earth. And Noaḥ removed the covering of the ark and looked, and saw the surface of the ground was dry.
Awesome! We have another 7 day period and we come to the 601st year of Noah’s life, in the first month of the year and the first day of that month so we can now do a simple calculation of 40 + 14 + 7 = 61 days and if we add our previous totals together we get that there are 12 months in a year and the remaining day is the first day of the new year, 601 A.N.(After Noah), and that means that 12 x 30 = 360 days.) Something doesn’t seem quite right but that is what we have so far but we have a place to begin. This is fantastic!!!
Now, if there was some kind of way we could use this information to show that there is a specific purpose in YHVH’s timetable. Why did he give us so much information if there isn’t a way to use it that can truly show the hand of Elohim working in His Word. Maybe I missed something. Hey, look at this:
Gen 8:4 And in the seventh new moon, the seventeenth day of the new moon, the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat.
H780 – אררט – ‘ărâraṭ – BDB Definition: Ararat = “the curse reversed: precipitation of curse”
I know this, I know this. Who reverses the curse? What curse you ask? The curse of Torah: Gal_3:10 For as many as are of works of Torah are under the curse, for it has been written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all that has been written in the Book of the Torah, to do them.”
Gal 3:13 Messiah redeemed us from the curse of the Torah, having become a curse for us – for it has been written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs upon a tree.”
The curse of Torah is Death. If we violate Torah then we must die but it was Yeshu’a who reversed the curse and if we believe that He is the One True Son of Elohim then He has defeated the curse through His death, burial and resurrection. Wow, so, how can we use this to count/clock time relative to the Messiah? I’ve got an idea and let’s see if it works. Please bear with me this will take awhile.
Isa 7:14 “Therefore יהוה Himself gives you a sign: Look, the ‘almah’ conceives and gives birth to a son, and shall call His Name Immanu’ěl.
H5959 – עלמה – ‛almâh – BDB Definition: 1) virgin, young woman
H2029 – הרה – hârâh – BDB Definition:1) to conceive, become pregnant, bear, be with child, be conceived, progenitor
I think we can all agree that this is speaking of the conception and birth of our Messiah, Yeshu’a. Let’s look further.
Isa 9:6 For a Child is born unto us, a Son is given unto us, and the rule is on His shoulder. And His Name is called Wonder, Counsellor, Strong Ěl, Father of Continuity, Prince of Peace.
Isa 9:7 Of the increase of His rule and peace there is no end, upon the throne of Dawiḏ and over His reign, to establish it and sustain it with right-ruling and with righteousness from now on, even forever. The ardour of יהוה of hosts does this.
Please notice that I have flagged “Of the increase” in Verse 7. This is a unique occurrence of something that would make a native Hebrew reader gag. “Of the increase in Hebrew is written this way: לםרְבֵּה lemarbeh. Look very closely and you will see something that is so blatant as to cause a Hebrew reader to be shocked. Look at the second letter, the Mem, but it is not just any Mem, it is the Mem soffit. When is the only time that you use the Mem soffit? At the end of the word and NOWHERE else. This letter is also called the “closed Mem”. Just like Yohannon used an Aramaic device to get our attention to the Aramaic word for Word, so Isaiah has used a Hebrew “faux pas” to call our attention to this phrase, “Of the increase”. In this phrase we see proof of the “closed womb” of a virgin. It has not been opened and so this is not just a maiden but a virgin. In Isaiah 33:23 where it says “great plunder” it is written correctly so it was not his “style” of writing. It is a clue to something yet unseen.
And you say, “Big Deal. Just because one of the most prolific prophets of the Tanakh made a mistake in his writing you are making a big deal out of it.”
But what has been the “increase of Yeshu’a’s” rule? It has spread to every continent and country of the world. Now those who were not born an Israelite can now be called Sons of Abraham. (Gal. 3:29)
Alright, alright, alright but, what does this have to do with the first day of the 10th month above? Glad you asked. This will take awhile so, please be patient.
Luk 1:5 There was in the days of Herodes, the sovereign of Yehuḏah, a certain priest named Zeḵaryah, of the division of Aḇiyah. And his wife was of the daughters of Aharon, and her name was Elisheḇa.
Luk 1:6 And they were both righteous before Elohim, blamelessly walking in all the commands and righteousnesses of יהוה.
((This is not necessarily part of the study but in Verse 6 please note that they were both walking in the commands of Elohim and both counted as righteous.))
Zekaryah was of the division of Abiyah and we know when the division of Abiyah served.
1Ch 24:1 And the divisions of the sons of Aharon: The sons of Aharon were Naḏaḇ and Aḇihu, El‛azar and Ithamar.
1Ch 24:2 But Naḏaḇ and Aḇihu died before their father, and had no children, so El‛azar and Ithamar served as priests.
1Ch 24:3 And Dawiḏ, with Tsaḏoq of the sons of El‛azar, and Aḥimeleḵ of the sons of Ithamar, divided them according to their offices in their service.
1Ch 24:4 And there were more leaders found of the sons of El‛azar than of the sons of Ithamar. So they divided the sons of El‛azar into sixteen heads of their fathers’ houses, and the sons of Ithamar into eight heads of their fathers’ houses.
1Ch 24:5 And they were divided by lot, one group as another, for there were officials of the set-apart place and officials of Elohim, from the sons of El‛azar and from the sons of Ithamar.
1Ch 24:6 And the scribe, Shemayah son of Nethan’ěl, one of the Lěwites, wrote them down before the sovereign, and the rulers, and Tsaḏoq the priest, and Aḥimeleḵ son of Eḇyathar, and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the priests and Lěwites, one father’s house taken for El‛azar and one for Ithamar.
1Ch 24:7 And the first lot came forth to Yehoyariḇ, the second to Yeḏayah,
1Ch 24:8 the third to Ḥarim, the fourth to Se‛orim,
1Ch 24:9 the fifth to Malkiyah, the sixth to Miyamin,
1Ch 24:10 the seventh to Haqqots, the eighth to Aḇiyah,
1Ch 24:11 the ninth to Yěshua, the tenth to Sheḵanyahu,
1Ch 24:12 the eleventh to Elyashiḇ, the twelfth to Yaqim,
1Ch 24:13 the thirteenth to Ḥuppah, the fourteenth to Yesheḇ’aḇ,
1Ch 24:14 the fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Imměr,
1Ch 24:15 the seventeenth to Ḥězir, the eighteenth to Happitstsěts,
1Ch 24:16 the nineteenth to Pethaḥyah, the twentieth to Yeḥezqěl,
1Ch 24:17 the twenty-first to Yaḵin, the twenty-second to Gamul,
1Ch 24:18 the twenty-third to Delayahu, the twenty-fourth to Ma‛azyahu.
Okay, now we have some important information. This is the rotation as it was set up in the days of King David but wait a cotton picking minute, Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the temple in 586 B.C. And it wasn’t rebuilt until later so how do we know when the priestly rotation was re-instituted? Easy:
Ezr 6:15 And this House was completed on the third day of the month of Aḏar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of Sovereign Dareyawesh.
Ezr 6:16 Then the children of Yisra’ěl, the priests and the Lěwites and the rest of the sons of the exile, did the dedication of this House of Elah with joy,
Ezr 6:17 and offered at the dedication of this House of Elah one hundred bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs, and as a sin offering for all Yisra’ěl twelve male goats, according to the number of the tribes of Yisra’ěl.
Ezr 6:18 And they appointed the priests to their divisions and the Lěwites to their divisions, over the service of Elah in Yerushalayim, as it is written in the Book of Mosheh.
We can now see that the division rotation began about the third day of the 12th month, Adar. And continued from there according to the pattern of rotation established in 1Chron. 24.
We can see from this guide that Zekaryah was doing his service during the 3rd month and it was probably before Shabuoth. After he returned home and made love to his wife she conceived. Now let’s take a look at the almah, Miryam: Luk 1:24 And after those days his wife Elisheḇa conceived. And she hid herself five months, saying, (It is saying she did not see anyone for 5 months.)
Luk 1:25 “יהוה has done this for me, in the days when He looked upon me, to take away my reproach among men.”
Luk 1:26 And in the sixth month the messenger Gaḇri’ěl was sent by Elohim to a city of Galil named Natsareth, (Notice; this is the sixth month of Elisheba’s pregnancy, not of the calendar year.)
Luk 1:27 to a maiden engaged to a man whose name was Yosěph, of the house of Dawiḏ. And the maiden’s name was Miryam.
Luk 1:28 And the messenger, coming to her, said, “Greetings, favoured one, the Master is with you. Blessed are you among women!”
So, doing the math, Elisheba conceived somewhere late in the third month or early in the 4th month and 6 months later Miryam was pregnant. When? Gen 8:5 And the waters decreased steadily until the tenth new moon. In the tenth new moon, on the first day of the new moon, the tops of the mountains became visible.
Chart provided by Craig Stevenson.
The purpose of this chart is to count a 40-week pregnancy, the colors do not represent anything special it is just one more way for me to cause you to buy more printer ink.
Now here is something I am willing to take on faith so please just bear with me. Yohannon the Immerser would have been born 6 months before Yeshu’a and I believe that he was either born on Pesach or Unleavened Bread, the 14th or 15th of the month of Aviv. Six months later would place us at the 15th of the 7th month, or the first day of Sukkot: Joh 1:14 And the Word became flesh and pitched His tent among us, and we saw His esteem, esteem as of an only brought-forth of a father, complete in favour and truth.
G4637 – σκηνόω – skēnoō – Thayer Definition: 1) to fix one’s tabernacle, have one’s tabernacle, abide (or live) in a tabernacle (or tent), tabernacle. What day of Sukkot do you pitch your tent? The first day.
STOP! Hold on just one minute. Your chart of 40 weeks have months with 29 days and some with 30 days. I thought you were proving that all months has 30 days. What happened?
Oops, did I say that? Oh, didn’t I already show you how time changed from thirty days a month to 29.5 days per month? My bad!
First, people are quick to point to the battle of Gilgal: Jos 10:12 Then Yehoshua spoke to יהוה in the day when יהוה gave the Amorites over to the children of Yisra’ěl, and he said before the eyes of Yisra’ěl, “Sun, stand still over Giḇ‛on; and moon, in the Valley of Ayalon.”
Jos 10:13 So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Yashar? Thus the sun stopped in the midst of the heavens, and did not hasten to go down for an entire day.
Please note that the relative position of the sun to the moon did not change and both stood still for an entire day so this does not affect a fraction of time but just accounts for one day. I need to find a place where a specific fraction of time is affected and that could affect the relationship of the sun and the moon to one another and here it is:
2Ki 20:1 In those days Ḥizqiyahu was sick unto death. And Yeshayahu the prophet, son of Amots, went to him and said to him, “Thus said יהוה, ‘Command your house, for you are going to die, and not live.’ ”
2Ki 20:2 And he turned his face toward the wall, and prayed to יהוה, saying,
2Ki 20:3 “I pray to You, O יהוה, remember how I have walked before You in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done what was good in Your eyes.” And Ḥizqiyahu wept bitterly.
2Ki 20:4 And it came to be, before Yeshayahu had gone out into the middle court, that the word of יהוה came to him, saying,
2Ki 20:5 “Return and say to Ḥizqiyahu the leader of My people, ‘Thus said יהוה, the Elohim of Dawiḏ your father, “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears. See, I am going to heal you. On the third day go up to the House of יהוה.
2Ki 20:6 “And I shall add to your days fifteen years, and deliver you and this city from the hand of the sovereign of Ashshur, and shall defend this city for My own sake, and for the sake of Dawiḏ My servant.” ’ ”
2Ki 20:7 And Yeshayahu said, “Take a cake of figs.” And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.
2Ki 20:8 And Ḥizqiyahu said to Yeshayahu, “What is the sign that יהוה does heal me, and that I shall go up to the House of יהוה the third day?”
2Ki 20:9 And Yeshayahu said, “This is the sign for you from יהוה, that יהוה does the word which He has spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees or go backward ten degrees?”
2Ki 20:10 And Ḥizqiyahu said, “It would be easy for the shadow to go down ten degrees; no, but let the shadow go backward ten degrees.”
2Ki 20:11 And Yeshayahu the prophet cried out to יהוה, and He brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down on the sundial of Aḥaz.
Okay, before I go one step further I have to make a comment. Just a few verses ago he was dying, now he wants proof that he will be healed and he is offered a choice between the shadow of the sundial going forward or backward ten degrees and this is what he replies: It would be easy for the shadow to go down ten degrees (Oh yeah, I’d like to see you do it Bozo.) This is what is known as Chesed – grace, mercy. If it would have been me I think I would have given him a lightening bolt in the wazoo. But that is just me. Sorry, I apologize.
First and foremost we must know that we are not talking about the common Roman sundial which may have originated 300-250 B.C. The Egyptians had a sundial of sorts going back to 2000-1750 B.C. But the Hebrew of this exchange makes this sundial sound much different: H4609 – מעלה – ma‛ălâh – BDB Definition: 1) what comes up, thoughts 2) step, stair 2a) step, stair 2b) steps (of sundial) 2c) stories (of heaven) 2d) ascent
So, instead of talking about this:
We instead are talking about a sundial that looks like this:
Notice the steps of the stairway to see the exact time.
Now for the math. Okay, quit whining, it is quite simple: tan(theta) = tan(HA) x sin(lat)
For those of us not particularly skilled in mathematics here it is in English: Since the earth rotates 360 degrees in 24 hours, that’s 15 degrees in 1 hour. So 10 AM can be expressed as the hour angle of -2 x 15′ = -30′ (Notice the minus sign) At 3:15 PM, the hour angle is 3.25 x 15′ = 48.75′
((Please note that I used the apostrophe for the degree sign.))
Quite simply 10′ equals about 40 minutes of time. You might say, “Well 40 minutes of time doesn’t sound like very much. Are you sure that this is what you are looking for?” Yep, I’m pretty sure. Let’s do some math.
10′ = 40 minutes/day
40 minutes x 30 days = 1,200 minutes/month
1,200 m. X 12 mos. = 14,400 minutes (Pretty interesting number isn’t it? Don’t worry, just a coincidence.)
14,400 x 3 (a 13th month every 3 years) = 43,200 minutes
43,200 ÷ 60 (m/Hour) =720 hours
720 ÷ 24 (H/day) = 30 days/mo.
I can see some of you rolling your eyes. I know what you are thinking, “Liars figure and figures lie.”
Now please remember when Hizqiyahu lived, before the Babylonian dispersion so there would have been no 13th month right? But after Hizqiyahu there would have been the need for a 13th month about every 3 years, more or less. So, is there anywhere in Scripture that there is proof of a 13th month? What happens if there is? Well, that would throw out the Enochian and Jubileean Calendars for sure, wouldn’t it? Let’s look and see if we can find proof of a thirteenth month somewhere or anywhere, in Scripture, preferably after the time of Hizqiyahu. Let’s try Ezekiel: Eze 1:1 And it came to be in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth of the new moon, as I was among the exiles by the River Keḇar, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of Elohim.
Eze 1:2 On the fifth of the new moon, in the fifth year of Sovereign Yehoyaḵin’s exile,
Let’s review this. It is the 30th year of captivity in Babylon, the fourth month of that year and the fifth day of that month. Sounds easy. Let’s not forget that it is also the 5th year of the exile of Yehoyakin. Now look at this: Eze 3:15 And I came to the exiles at Těl Aḇiḇ,(There is always a hill where the Hebrews find the ripening of the barley before any other.) who were dwelling by the River Keḇar. And I sat where they were sitting, and sat there, stunned among them, seven days.
Eze 3:16 And it came to be at the end of seven days that the word of יהוה came to me, saying,
5 + 7 = 12. We are now at the 12th day of the 4th month in the 30th year of captivity. What happens next is that Ezekiel is given a command to lie on his side for 390 days for Israel (Northern 10 Tribes) and then to lie on his side for 40 days for Yehudah (30 + 40 = 70 years of captivity) making a total of 430 days. Please stop and think about what this Navi did in his service to YHVH, 430 days on his sides cooking his food over dung. Hello?
Alright, where is our next temporal marker? Eze 8:1 And it came to be in the sixth year, in the sixth month, on the fifth of the new moon, as I sat in my house with the elders of Yehuḏah sitting before me, that the hand of the Master יהוה fell upon me there.
We are now in the sixth year of Yehoyakin’s exile, in the sixth month on the 5th of the month. Wow, this is getting good. Here come some more charts but they are not as fancy or in color like the other one:
Please notice as you look at these two charts neither chart can account for the proper number of days without the inclusion of a 13th month, you simply do not have enough days with a 30 day calendar or a 29/30 day calendar to account for the interval mentioned. Only with a 13th month is there enough days to fill in the gap. No Enochian calendar or Jubilee calendar is in use in these Scriptures. But please remember, this is before the rise of the Greek empire and the Hellenization of the rest of the world. This is before the incorporation of the Hellenized traditions of men. This was truly a Hebrew calendar.
Now let me wax philosophical for a moment. Time is the greatest commodity in your life. When you try for a new job and a better wage it is to make it worth your TIME. By trading your time for their money you have established the amount by which you value your time. I was asked by a man if I would go to work for him and I quickly told him “No!” “Why not? You have not even heard my offer” he asked. “Because you will not value my time as much as I do.”
As many of you know, Von and I spent 2 years building our house, in our spare time, which is valued at $90,000. Let’s say that she and I spent a combined total of 3,000 hours on the house for 2 years, I believe it was much less but let’s just average things out. Now, do the math and see that it equals to $30.00/hour. But, I know we did not spend that much time because we both worked during that period of time, with me working 40-60 hours/week so, if I say that we spent a combined total of 2,000 hours building our house that would equal $45.00/hour. And now, it has appreciated and is worth even more. Figure out what your time is worth and value it as such. It is your only commodity that you are born with, all others have to be purchased or earned.
Ahavah vberakhot,
