Verses 1-4 – The Sins – We have already talked about the word for sin – Chata – H2398 so, I would like to look at the word(s) used for “commit trespass” –
H4603 – מעל – mâ‛al – BDB Definition: 1) to act unfaithfully, act treacherously, transgress, commit a trespass
H4604 – מעל – ma‛al – BDB Definition: 1) unfaithful or treacherous act, trespass
As you see they are virtually the same word used twice to show the gravity of the sin but the primary meaning for H4603 is “to cover up” or “to act covertly”. Unfortunately, we are only too familiar with the intent of this word in our world today but let me give you an example from Scripture: Act 5:1 But a certain man named Ḥananyah, with Shappirah his wife, sold a possession.
Act 5:2 And he kept back from the price, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the feet of the emissaries.
Act 5:3 But Kěpha said, “Ḥananyah, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Set-apart Spirit and keep back from the price of the land for yourself?
Act 5:4 “While it remained, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your authority? Why have you conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to Elohim.”
Act 5:5 Then Ḥananyah, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all those who heard of this.
And, afterwards his wife came in and committed the same “cover up” or “covert act”. They tried to deal deceptively with the Ruach Hakodesh as though He were a man and could be deceived which probably best illustrates the depth of their faith.
Verses 5-7 – The Solution – Where does the solution begin? Repentence! And then, Restitution! Next, Redemption (20% more)! And next, Restoration, through the blood.
Repentence + Restitution + Redemption + Restoration = Chesed (grace, favor)
People will say that there is no grace in Torah. Just this one example proves them wrong.
Mat 5:23 “If, then, you bring your gift to the slaughter-place, and there remember that your brother holds whatever against you,
Mat 5:24 leave your gift there before the slaughter-place, and go, first make peace with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
Heb 10:20 by a new and living way which He instituted for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh,
Heb 10:21 and having a High Priest over the House of Elohim,
Heb 10:22 let us draw near with a true heart in completeness of belief, having our hearts sprinkled from a wicked conscience and our bodies washed with clean water.
Verse 8-11 – Command – Remember, we discussed the change that took place upon the completion of the Tent of Appointment and the setting apart of Aharon and his sons as priests. Not even Moshe or Yehoshua, who previously were the only two allowed in, could now enter the Tent. Did this trivialize Mosheh’s role? No! Verse 9 begins with the word Tsavah – H6680 – command. Mosheh’s role has become that of Prophet! Rev 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “See, do not do it! I am your fellow servant, and of your brothers who possess the witness of יהושע. Worship Elohim! For the witness of יהושע is the spirit of prophecy.”
Verses (9&)12-13 – The Fire – Did you ever stop and consider that a fire is a living being? It is born, eats fuel – (food for the fire), it grows, it needs oxygen, it can change its surroundings and alter the environment around itself and, it reproduces in like kind and it dies. Does it seem unususal that it was treated as a living being? It was a sign of the Presence of YHVH. Exo 40:38 For the cloud of יהוה was on the Dwelling Place by day, and fire was on it by night, before the eyes of all the house of Yisra’ěl, in all their journeys.
It was a sign of the covenant meal: Gen 15:17 And it came to be, when the sun went down and it was dark, that see, a smoking oven and a burning torch passing between those pieces.
It was a sign of the presence of the Comforter: Act 2:3 And there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and settled on each one of them.
Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Set-apart Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them to speak.
Special instructions were needed for the fire and had to be followed or else: Lev 10:1 And Naḏaḇ and Aḇihu, the sons of Aharon, each took his fire holder and put fire in it, and put incense on it, and brought strange fire before יהוה, which He had not commanded them.
Lev 10:2 And fire came out from יהוה and consumed them, and they died before יהוה.
Has the fire gone out? It is a very important lesson we see in a very familiar Scripture: Mat 25:1 “Then the reign of the heavens shall be compared to ten maidens who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
Mat 25:2 “And five of them were wise, and five foolish.
Mat 25:3 “Those who were foolish, having taken their lamps, took no oil with them,
Mat 25:4 but the wise took oil in their containers with their lamps.
Mat 25:5 “Now while the bridegroom took time, they all slumbered and slept.
Mat 25:6 “And at midnight a cry was heard, ‘See, the bridegroom is coming, go out to meet him!’
Mat 25:7 “Then all those maidens rose up and trimmed their lamps.
Why did they have to trim their lamps? Because their lamps were burning when they took them with them. The preferred time for the Bridegroom’s arrival was between sunset and midnight. This meant that in order to find the way to the gate through which the Bridegroom would enter they had to have lit their lamps to follow in the way to the gate.
Here is a Scripture whose intent has been lost: 2Ti 1:6 For this reason I remind you to stir up the gift of Elohim which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
To stir up = G329 – ἀναζωπυρέω – ana-zō–pur-eō – an-ad-zo-poor-eh’-o – to rekindle, stir up
What do you rekindle or stir up? A fire. Please notice that I have underlined two of the root words for the word above: zo from zoon(G2226) and pur from pur(G4442)
Zo or zoon means a living being, alive, a living creature and,
Pur means burning, fire.
The fire, or burning, represents YHVH’s presence, as in the column of fire and also His Cleansing: Isa 4:4 When יהוה has washed away the filth of the daughters of Tsiyon, and rinsed away the blood of Yerushalayim from her midst, by the spirit of judgment and by the spirit of burning,
Isa 4:5 then יהוה shall create above every dwelling place of Mount Tsiyon, and above her gatherings, a cloud and smoke by day and the shining of a flaming fire by night, for over all the esteem shall be a covering,
Isa 4:6 and a booth for shade in the daytime from the heat, for a place of refuge, and for a shelter from storm and rain.
Zec_13:9 “And I shall bring the third into fire, and refine them as silver is refined, and try them as gold is tried. They shall call on My Name, and I shall answer them. I shall say, ‘This is My people,’ while they say, ‘יהוה is my Elohim.’ ”
Verse 14 – We will see this phrase many times throughout Wayyiqra and the rest of Torah but we have to remember Torah means instruction, singular. Torah can also be a singular plural like sheep, deer or cannon or it can be expressed as a plural Torot.
Lev./Way. 6:9 ‘This is the Torah of the ascending offering:
Lev./Way. 6:14 ‘And this is the Torah of the grain offering:
Lev./Way. 6:25 ‘This is the Torah of the sin offering:
So, how many Torahs are there? One: Exo_12:49 “There is one Torah for the native-born and for the stranger who sojourns among you.”
Num 15:15 One law is for you of the assembly and for the stranger who sojourns with you – a law forever throughout your generations. As you are, so is the stranger before יהוה.
Num 15:16 One Torah and one right-ruling is for you and for the stranger who sojourns with you.’ ”
Num_15:29 For him who does whatever by mistake there is one Torah, both for him who is native among the children of Yisra’ěl and for the stranger who sojourns in their midst.
T = the sign of the covenant, mark, sign, crossed sticks
f = peg, tent peg, secured
r = head, leader, chief
e = behold, revealed
Behold! The Covenant is secured by our Leader or,
The Leader who Secured our Covenant is Revealed!
Verses 14-18 – The grain offering.
Verses 19-23 – Ordination of the High Priest
Verses 25-30 – The Sin Offering.
