Verse 1 – I don’t know about anyone else but, I can identify with verse 1. Dad would tell me, “Son, I’ll show you how to do it the first time, but after that you’ll have to do it for yourself.” Sometimes I would get it right the first time but sometimes I would make a mistake and have to start over. I feel like YHVH was teaching Mosheh the same lesson my Dad tried to teach me, you’ll remember and appreciate it more if you have to do it on your own: Pro 3:3 Let not loving-commitment and truth forsake you – Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart,
Pro 3:4 Thus finding favour and good insight In the eyes of Elohim and man.
Pro 7:2 Guard my commands and live, And my Torah as the apple of your eye.
Pro 7:3 Bind them on your fingers; Write them on the tablet of your heart.
Mosheh was learning a lesson, “You broke it, you fix it.” And, another lesson that was being taught, just like with my Dad, “The more you do it, the more you remember and appreciate it.” Sixty years later I still remember that first time when Dad taught me how to do it and I treasure that memory: Jer 31:33 “For this is the covenant I shall make with the house of Yisra’ěl after those days, declares יהוה: I shall put My Torah in their inward parts, and write it on their hearts. And I shall be their Elohim, and they shall be My people.
Many things I could never do as well as Dad could but, I still remember the lessons he taught me. I think this is what happened with Mosheh as well. It was written on my inward parts.
Verse 2 – This verse sounds like getting ready for a hunting or fishing trip, “Be ready in the morning.” we would always get up around 5 a.m., even when we were on the shore of the lake or bayou, but we would get up earlier if we had to drive any distance at all. I still have the old Big Ben wind up alarm clock that I would set and would fall asleep listening to it tick-tick-tick until it was time to get up and then it sounded like someone beating a pot with a metal spoon. Even as I turned the alarm off and it resumed its ticking I could smell the coffee and could hear Dad and Grandmother talking in the kitchen. My eyes were half clsed and I would go into the bathroom and splash cold water on my face and wash the sleep from my eyes. I really didn’t want to get up but I was looking forward to the events of the day. I don’t know if Mosheh had a couple of cups of coffee that morning but I know he anticipated the events of the day. No matter how early I got up Dad was already awake and waiting on me. A lot of times Grandmother had already fixed the coffee and cooked breakfast before Dad got up. I suspect that YHVH was always there, always ready and had already prepared the table before Mosheh got there: Psa 23:5 You spread before me a table in the face of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup runs over.
Verses 3-4 – There is a place on the river, creek, lake or pond called the “honey hole” and you never let another soul know about it. Of course, Grandmother and Granddad did so you would know what to look for when it was your turn to find your own “honey hole”. I remember a couple of times we drove in a circle a couple of times because it looked like someone was following us and we wanted to throw them off the trail. Now when you got to the “honey hole” there was a place called the “sweet spot” and that is where you wanted to fish. It was amazing to me how there was always a hungry fish just waiting for my bait and would bite almost as soon as I threw the line in. We didn’t have fish finders or rods and reels and high dollar equipment I had the knowledge of Grandmother and Granddaddy to tell me where the sweet spot was. In preparation for that day I would cut a good stout piece of bamboo and let it dry for weeks. Then you would sand the bamboo lightly with fine grit sandpaper so it would hold a finish and then put spar varnish or shellac on it so it would last. How did I know how to do this? Because Granddaddy showed me how to do it the first time. Now, unlike Mosheh, Granddaddy always wanted to have cows nearby and the reason for that was what he taught me, “If cows ain’t eatin’ neither or the fish.” First thing in the morning the cows were eating because it was cool and comfortable but later in the day they would get hot, find some shade and lay down and so would the fish. That is when you heard, “Might as well go to the house.” What does this have to do with the second set of tablets? Just like Mosheh times like these are written on our hearts.
Verses 5-7 – Once again I see this as proof that it is not the Father standing beside Mosheh but the Son. Why? Because the Son is glad to proclaim the name of His Father: Joh 5:43 “I have come in My Father’s Name and you do not receive Me, if another comes in his own name, him you would receive.
Don’t you always want to tell people the best attributes of Your Father? Of course you do. But is that all going on here? NO! Yeshua is preparing Mosheh for another day, another time: Mat 17:1 And after six days יהושע took Kěpha, and Ya‛aqoḇ, and Yoḥanan his brother, and brought them up on a high mountain by themselves,
Mat 17:2 and He was transformed before them, and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as the light.
Mat 17:3 And see, Mosheh and Ěliyahu appeared to them, talking with Him.
Torah and the prophets! The Son proclaimed His Father’s Name and stood beside Torah and the Prophets. So, what did the Father do? Luk 9:33 And it came to be, as they were parting from Him, Kěpha said to יהושע, “Master, it is good for us to be here. And let us make three booths: one for You, and one for Mosheh, and one for Ěliyahu,” not knowing what he said.
Luk 9:34 And as he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them. And they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
Luk 9:35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, the Beloved. Hear Him!”
He proclaimed His Son!
What does He proclaim? That YHVH is a compassionate El. Compassionate = H7349 = rahum. Rahum comes from H2587 = hanun = favorable, gracious which in turn comes from H2603 = hanan = to show favor, to be gracious and its derivative form is H2580 = hen = grace, favor. Remember the relationship between Hesed and Hen? Hen is a free gift but Hesed has to be earned. The Covenant we have with our Creator is a free gift. We did nothing to earn it. But you have to walk in the Covenant in order to receive Hesed because you only give Hesed to someone you love and why does He love us? Because we keep His Commands, His Covenant.
After proclaiming the attributes of His Father before Mosheh, what does He do next? Yeshua reaffirms the Marriage Covenant: Exo 20:5 you do not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, יהוה your Elohim am a jealous Ěl, visiting the crookedness of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
Exo 20:6 but showing loving-commitment to thousands, to those who love Me and guard My commands.
Yeshua did before Mosheh what He also did before the Pharisees but because of their sin they would not humble their hearts and hear Him. In order to ease their suffering they killed the Messenger proclaiming the Truth.
Psa 107:43 Who is wise? Then let him observe these matters! Let them understand the loving-commitments of יהוה.
1Jn 3:1 See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of Elohim! For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
After the events of this week I now know what it is like to have someone tell me, “I would like you to be a part of my life.” The joy that must be in the Father’s heart when He hears us say that is only exceeded by the Joy He has when He sees us keep His Commands in order to prove to Him we do love Him. 1Jn 2:3 And by this we know that we know Him, if we guard His commands.
Verses 8-11 – Mosheh falls on his face and begs for forgiveness, not for himself but for his people. He does not do it because he counted himself more righteous than the rest. Look how he asks, “If, now, I have found favour in Your eyes,”. IF – the biggest two letter word there is. He did not say “Because” no, he said IF. And, what does the Father tell him, “See, I am making a covenant. What is the proof of this Covenant? “I am going to do wonders”. The proof of His Covenant is in the Doing of Wonders. And what do we have to do in return? “Guard what I command you today.”
Verses 12-17 – Guard! Again and again we see this word, shamar, to guard. But do we do it? YHVH tells Mosheh to not make a covenant with the world. We are just passing through, don’t get comfortable with the world it will cause you to turn away from Me.
Verse 18-27 – Guard! Guard what? The Feasts. How did I miss it for so many years. I look back with joy at the feasts that I have kept. They are emotional times for me because I now know my responsibility and that is to Guard the Feasts.
In verse 26 we see the command to not boil a kid in his mother’s milk. It has the same implied meaning as verse 25 where it says: “Do not slay the blood of My slaughtering with leaven, It is an act of nullifying the offering. Leaven represents sin and you don’t mix your offering with sin. The boiling of a kid goat in its mother’s milk was a pagan tradition to promote the fertility of the soil. Essentially, it is saying “don’t worship Me as the pagans do their gods.” Oh boy, did I ever blow that command. Not once, not twice but hundreds of times, thousands of times or probably hundreds of thousands of times. Not only was I in church every Sunday, I had the key to open the door, every Sunday.
Lev 18:3 ‘Do not do as they do in the land of Mitsrayim, where you dwelt. And do not do as they do in the land of Kena‛an, where I am bringing you, and do not walk in their laws.
Lev 18:4 ‘Do My right-rulings and guard My laws, to walk in them. I am יהוה your Elohim.
Deu 12:30 guard yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed from before you, and that you do not inquire about their mighty ones, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their mighty ones? And let me do so too.’
Deu 18:9 “When you come into the land which יהוה your Elohim is giving you, do not learn to do according to the abominations of those nations.
Eze 11:12 “And you shall know that I am יהוה, for you have not walked in My laws nor executed My right-rulings, but have done according to the rulings of the nations which are all around you.”
Jer 10:2 Thus said יהוה, “Do not learn the way of the nations, and do not be awed by the signs of the heavens, for the nations are awed by them.
Jer 10:3 “For the laws of these peoples are worthless, for one cuts a tree from the forest, work for the hands of a craftsman with a cutting tool.
Jer 10:4 “They beautify it with silver and gold, they strengthen it with nails and hammers so that it does not topple.
1Pe 4:3 For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the desire of the nations, having walked in indecencies, lusts, drunkenness, orgies, wild parties, and abominable idolatries,
1Pe 4:4 in which they are surprised that you do not run with them in the same flood of loose behaviour, blaspheming,
Verses 28-35 – Mosheh did not eat or drink for 40 days: Joh 4:34 יהושע said to them, “My food is to do the desire of Him who sent Me, and to accomplish His work.
Mosheh was in the Presence of the Author of Life and was sustained by His Light. Joh_8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
Joh_9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
