Shemoth (Exodus) 28

Lesson date: 1/17/5856AA

Verse 1 – How many people noticed the odd break in Chapter 27 last week. The chapter talked about the Bronze Altar/Slaughter Place and then the Outer Court where the Bronze Altar was located. Then it suddenly jumps to the olive oil for the Menorah. Why? We find the meaning to that question in verse 1. Aharon’s name means “Light-Bringer” and you cannot have light without oil. Who is the Light? And, who is the Oil? Was it an accident that David wrote these words: Psa 133:2 Like the precious oil on the head, Running down on the beard, The beard of Aharon, Running down on the collar of his robes –

A beautiful picture is being painted here for us let’s start putting it together:

  • Aharaon – H175 – Light-Bringer
  • Nadab – H5070 – Generous
  • Abihu – H30 – He is my Father
  • Eleazar – H499 – El has helped
  • Ithamar – H385 – Coast of Palms (Coast/Isle in the sense of a desirable dwelling/refuge)

((Psa 92:12 The righteous one flourishes like a palm tree, He grows like a cedar in Leḇanon.))

The Light-Bringer is Generous and He is my Father, whom El has Helped and given us a Desirable Dwelling/refuge.

This is only the first beautiful picture in this verse. We have to wait almost 2,000 years to see the manifestation of the next one. How do you get olive oil? Let’s look at a common word: Gethsemane.

Gath – H1660 – winepress, wine vat, a place to crush

Shemen – H8081 – fat, oil, olive oil

The answer to the question is, you must crush the olive berries to get the oil. There were two major types of olive crushers. One looked similar to a mill stone to crush wheat or barley on a large scale:

The other type was a lot different in that a vat was employed to place the olive berries into and a stone lowered into the top of the olives and the stone was usually attached to a large beam. The beam was about 8 feet long and it had notches a foot apart over the last four feet. Another stone, weighing between 50 and 100 pounds was attached to a rope and the rope would fit into the notches. The purest, clearest and what was considered the fattest most desirable oil was when the stone was placed on the notch nearest the vat. Adding the stone to the beam began the crushing process. The picture picture above is similar to the one I am talking about but in this picure the stones on the beam are crushing the olives. The other style employs the beam as a cantilever and the weights themselves similar to the one below:

According to my neighbor 43 years ago this was the most desirable because you could crush the olive in different “waves” or notches. It was the first “wave” or notch’s oil that was the most desired. It was said that it contained all the body or fruitiness of the oil. It was a beautiful emerald green and possessed all the fragrance of the olive. Then each subsequent pressing was less and less desirable for fresh use. According to him, the unscrupulous would add coals or hot stones to the outside of the vat, wait an hour for the heat to penetrate the vat and then have a fat woman sit on the pole with all four stones already on it. This oil was used for cooking oil or lubrication only. I know what you are thinking, “how is this a beautiful picture?”

Mat 26:37 And He took with Him Kěpha and the two sons of Zaḇdai, and He began to be grieved and deeply distressed.

Mat 26:38 Then He said to them, “My being is exceedingly grieved, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.”

Mat 26:39 And going forward a little, He fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I desire, but as You desire.”

Mat 26:40 And He came to the taught ones and found them asleep, and said to Kěpha, “So, were you not able to watch with Me one hour?

Luk 22:44 And being in agony, He was praying more earnestly. And His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

Yeshua was under great trial and Hasatan had added all the stones he had and, being unscrupulous, had added the heat and after an hour’s wait he added all the weight of his entire being to the pole and Yeshua’s blood began to be forced through the skin of His forehead but He did not yield to the pressure: “Yet not as I desire, but as You desire.”

Deu 31:8 “And it is יהוה who is going before you, He Himself is with you. He does not fail you nor forsake you. Do not fear nor be discouraged.”

Do you think Yeshua might of had that verse of Scripture in mind as He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane? Do you now why Sha’ul uses the word pressure: 2Co_2:4 For out of much pressure and distress of heart I wrote to you, with many tears, not that you should be sad, but that you might know the love which I so richly have for you.

Anyway, probably a coincidence.

Verse 2 – Aharon and his sons were to be set-apart and to wear set-apart garments. We too will be given set-apart garments one day: Rev_7:14 And I said to him, “Master, you know.” And he said to me, “These are those coming out of the great distress, having washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

2Pe 1:3 as His Mighty-like power has given to us all we need for life and reverence, through the knowledge of Him who called us to esteem and uprightness.

Verse 3- Exo 28:3 “And you, speak to all the wise of heart, whom I have filled with a spirit of wisdom,

Pro 2:6 For יהוה gives wisdom; Out of His mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Pro 4:5 “Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, and do not turn away From the words of my mouth.

Jas 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of Elohim, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it shall be given to him.

Wisdom does not just happen overnight. It is a gift of YHVH that is desired and should be sought.
