Shemoth (Exodus) 24 — Sealing the Covenant

Lesson date: 12/19/5855AA

Verse 1-2 – These verse is making it clear that the covenant is not just with the Tribe of Levi but all of Yisra’el. Not only is Mosheh instructing to bring Aharon, Nadab and Abihu but the 70 elders of Yisra’el. Please note that it is not an accident that the number of elders is 70 but is in fact Scriptural and represents the entirety of Yisra’el: Gen 46:27 And the sons of Yosěph who were born to him in Mitsrayim were two beings. All the beings of the house of Ya‛aqoḇ who went to Mitsrayim were seventy.

Now, look at the sequence of the names in this verse of Scripture: Mosheh+Aharon+Nadab+Abihu.

  • Mosheh = Drawn out (of water)
  • Aharon = light-bringer
  • Nadab = generous
  • Abihu = he is my father

YHVH has drawn us out (of the nations) with the Light-Bringer (Yeshua/ John 9:5) and He is generous and He is my(our) Father. Coincidence?

We see YHVH tell Mosheh that he is to go further than the others. This is not new to Mosheh but it is new for the 70 elders to be allowed up the mountain closer to YHVH than the rest of the people. Remember, in Shem. 19:11-12 specifies that if anyone or anything touches the mountain it or they shall be put to death. This command is proving the courage of the 70 to be fit to represent the people as a whole. I can almost hear them ask Mosheh, “Are you sure YHVH said we were to go up the mountain?”

Verse 3 – This is clear covenant language and matches up with Shemoth 19:8. Remember, the Children of Yisra’el were afraid to hear the Voice of YHVH directly so, they limited the covenant to have an intercessor Shem 19:19 which is why we see the Ruach descend onto the people in Acts 2, in order to restore the covenant to its original intent.

Verses 4-6 & 8– This verse disproves the Jewish teaching that there are certain “oral Torah” traditions by saying that Mosheh wrote down ALL that YHVH told Him. The way the verse is expressed is: And Moshe wrote (H853) all the Words… What kind of son would Yeshua have been IF He had really come to Earth to do away with His Father’s Covenant? He would have been a terrible son to undo the legacy of His Father. How do we know tha He did not? Look at His Title in the Book of Isaiah: Isa 9:6 For a Child is born unto us, a Son is given unto us, and the rule is on His shoulder. And His Name is called Wonder, Counsellor, Strong Ěl, Father of Continuity, Prince of Peace.

Every one wants to concentrate on the Prince of Peace but His most precious title is Father of Continuity. He built up His Father’s House.

We have talked about the different types of covenants and what the mean and represent but one universal component is either blood or a substiture for blood within the covenant. It may be wine or bread or salt alone but there is a component in each covenant that represents blood. Here we see Mosheh build an altar, erect 12 columns, one for each tribe and then men are sent to make sacrifices and Mosheh takes the blood and confirms the covenant with part of the blood of the sacrifices. This goes to the very heart of the word Shabbat which comes from a root that means to “seven oneself” or to cut oneself seven times. Each time we keep the Shabbat of YHVH we reconfim our convenant with our Creator. Exo 31:16 ‘And the children of Yisra’ěl shall guard the Sabbath, to perform the Sabbath throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant.

Verse 7 – This is why we read Torah, it IS the book of the Covenant. How many times have I been told, “but we are New Testament Christians”? Gal 3:27 For as many of you as were immersed into Messiah have put on Messiah.

Gal 3:28 There is not Yehuḏi nor Greek, there is not slave nor free, there is not male and female, for you are all one in Messiah יהושע.

Gal 3:29 And if you are of Messiah, then you are seed of Aḇraham, and heirs according to promise.

There is no covenant of promise outside the covenant made with Abraham. There is no dispensation of the church. It is a myth, a lie formulated in the minds of men by Hasatan to deceive those who had not love of the truth: 2Th 2:9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power and signs and wonders of falsehood,

2Th 2:10 and with all deceit of unrighteousness in those perishing, because they did not receive the love of the truth, in order for them to be saved.

2Th 2:11 And for this reason Elohim sends them a working of delusion, for them to believe the falsehood,

What is so special about Torah? It is our covenant: Jos 1:8 “Do not let this Book of the Torah depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you guard to do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and act wisely.

Psa 1:2 But his delight is in the Torah of יהוה, And he meditates in His Torah day and night.

As a family we read and study Torah on Shabbat morning but individually it should be our reading each day. Sometimes, when things of the world get overwhelming I like to read that His Covenant with us is an everlasting covenant and we should keep it forever in our generations. It is comforting to know that: Isa 40:8 “Grass shall wither, the flower shall fade, but the Word of our Elohim stands forever.”

Verses 9-11 – Mosheh read the Book of the Covenant, sprinkled the blood on the altar and the people and then, as commanded, those designated went up the mountain to see YHVH. Notice there appeared a surface like it was paved sapphire: Eze_1:26 And above the expanse over their heads was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like a sapphire stone. And on the likeness of the throne was a likeness as the appearance of a man high above it.

Eze_10:1 And I looked and saw in the expanse that was above the head of the keruḇim, like a sapphire stone, having the appearance of the likeness of a throne.

They had actually set foot in His throne room. His Throne is a chariot and it appears to those whom He reveals himself: 2Ki 2:12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried out, “My father, my father, the chariot of Yisra’ěl and its horsemen!” And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his garments and tore them into two pieces.

Mat_26:64 Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

Mar_14:62 And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

The key word is sitting in His Father’s Chariot, which is His Father’s Throne room.

Here is the really neat thing about Hebrew: the word from which we get sapphire comes from the Hebrew sappiyr – H5601 and it comes from H5608 – saphar – which is the root word for Book or scroll(sefer) used in verse 7. How? Think like a Hebrew. H5608 – סָפַר – sâphar – saw-far’

A primitive root; properly to score with a mark as a tally or record, that is, (by implication) to inscribe,

H5601 סַפִּיר – sappı̂yr – sap-peer’ – From H5608; a gem (perhaps as used for scratching other substances), probably the sapphire: – sapphire.

H5612 – סִפְרָה  סֵפֶר – sêpher  siphrâh – say’-fer, sif-raw’ – From H5608; properly writing (the art or a document); by implication a book: ((This actually goes back to scratching letters into clay tablets.))

And then there was meal. Why?

Verses 12-18 – In verse 12 we see YHVH distinguish between the tablets of stone and the Torah and the command (singular plural like deer or cannon).

A lot of our “ideas” or perceptions about Scripture are based upon the images coming from Hollyweird, sorry Hollywood and bear little resemblance to actual Scripture. Above is the image we have of Mosheh and the tablets of stone. But what does Scripture say about them: Exo 32:15 And Mosheh turned and went down from the mountain, and in his hand were the two tablets of the Witness, tablets written on both their sides, written on the one and on the other. Hand not hands. Also, remember that the only book or tablet specifically mentioned to be written on both sides is Torah. So when we read: Eze 2:9 And I looked and saw a hand stretched out to me. And see, a scroll of a book was in it,

Eze 2:10 and He spread it before me, and it was written on the inside and on the outside. And written on it were lamentations and mourning and woe.

Eze 3:1 And He said to me, “Son of man, eat what you find, eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Yisra’ěl.”

Eze 3:2 And I opened my mouth, and He fed me the scroll.

Eze 3:3 And He said to me, “Son of man, feed your stomach, and fill your stomach with this scroll that I am giving you.” And I ate it, and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth.

Rev 10:9 And I went to the messenger and said to him, “Give me the little book.” And he said to me, “Take and eat it, and it shall make your stomach bitter, but it shall be as sweet as honey in your mouth.”

Take and eat is a Hebrew idiom for acquiring knowledge but, the phrase sweet as honey in your mouth and make your stomach bitter is an idiom that refers back to the first day of Torah school for those who went were given a piece of an old Torah scroll that was no longer in use, would be dipped in honey and the boys would eat it so it tasted good but the scroll was usually dried animal skin and it would make them sick to their stomachs. Every Hebrew would immediately recognize this phrase in Revelation as referring to Torah.

There is much more in these verses and we will talk about them this morning.
