Shemoth (Exodus) 21 — Right-Rulings

Lesson date: 11/27/5855AA

Verse 1 – We see in the beginning of this chapter that it is a direct continuation of Chapter 20 verse 21. The Children of Yisra’el expressed their fear of hearing the voice of Elohim and moved away from hearing His Voice “but Moshe drew near the thick darkness where Elohim was.”

Jas_4:8 Draw near to Elohim and He shall draw near to you. Cleanse hands, sinners. And cleanse the hearts, you double-minded!

Mishpat(im) – H4941 – Judgement(s), right-rulings: Psa 97:2 Clouds and darkness all around Him, Righteousness and right-ruling are the foundation of His throne. David perfectly describes what Mosheh saw.

The legislative bodies in our nation approve approximately 150,000 new laws every year but in our Creator’s Kingdom the same laws have been in effect since time began. If we keep these laws we can be assured of living a righteous life in relation to our Master יהושע Messiah. The right-rulings are timeless and contrary to the modern belief of Christianity, these right-rulings were not done away with by the death of our Messiah יהושע .

Verse 2 – “That evil institution of slavery” as it is described by the abolitionist of the 19th century America. But without the practice of slavery my family would not have come to America in 1640. My family was yeoman farmers and could not afford the passage to the new word so, they sold themselves into servitude so that their masters would pay the passage from England to Baltimore. The husband, wife and children worked for 7 years to help build a farm for their masters in what was then called the Carolina Plantation. After 7 years they requested their freedom but it was denied but they petition a judge to judge the matter and 2 years later they received their freedom and back wages. To whom did they sell themselves? The husband’s older, richer brother.

Shortly after completing a movie in which Morgan Freeman played Nelson Mandela, President Obama invited Mr. Freeman to speak about the evils of slavery. Mr. Freeman refused the invitation by telling President Obama that he could not do that because he had just return from a tour of Africa and had there been no slavery his family would not have come to America where they could build a better life.

I say all of this to make the point that slavery was a way of accruing wealth. It was supposed to be humane and filled with compassion. Let’s read these verses in that light. Notice verse 2 makes the point of buying a Hebrew slave which is your countryman and not a slave taken in war from another country. Do we still have slavery today in 21st Century America? Yes, of course we do but the periods of time are now much longer than allowed by Scripture. The word “mortgage” comes from two Latin words meaning death-pledge. No debt was supposed to be for a period of time greater than 7 years and would be done away with in the sabbatical (7th) year. 1Co 7:23 You were bought with a price, do not become slaves of men.

Verses 3-4 – You are released from slavery in the same capacity that you went in. If you were given a wife while in slavery the wife will remain the property of your former master.

Verses 5-6 –  I often think of Eli’ezer, the servant of Abraham. He obviously loved his master and faithfully executed the tasks given to him by his master. Had Abraham not had children Eli’ezer would have inherited all that Abraham had accumulated . (Gen. 15:2)

“If a servant truly says, ‘I love my master…’

Rom 10:9 That if you confess with your mouth the Master יהושע and believe in your heart that Elohim has raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.

Rom 10:10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, and so is saved.

Rom 10:11 Because the Scripture says, “Whoever puts his trust in Him shall not be put to shame.” Isa_28:16.

Rom 10:12 Because there is no distinction between Yehuḏi and Greek, for the same Master of all is rich to all those calling upon Him.

Rom 10:13 For “everyone who calls on the Name of יהוה shall be saved.”

How do we show our love for our Master? Joh_14:15 “If you love Me, you shall guard My commands.

1Jn 5:1 Everyone who believes that יהושע is the Messiah has been born of Elohim, and everyone who loves the One bringing forth also loves the one having been born of Him.

1Jn 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of Elohim, when we love Elohim and guard His commands.

1Jn 5:3 For this is the love for Elohim, that we guard His commands, and His commands are not heavy, Our proof of our love for Him is in our obedience to His Word!

When we confess our love for our Master we are brought to the Door: Joh 10:7 יהושע therefore said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

Joh_14:6  יהושע said to him, “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Doorpost = H4201 – מְזֻזָה   מְזוּזָהmezûzâh  mezûzâh – mez-oo-zaw’, mez-oo-zaw’ – From the same as H2123; a door post (as prominent):

Exo 12:7 ‘And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it.

Exo 12:22 “And you shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin, and you, none of you shall go out of the door of his house until morning.

Deu 6:6 “And these Words which I am commanding you today shall be in your heart,

Deu 6:7 and you shall impress them upon your children, and shall speak of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up,

Deu 6:8 and shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.

Deu 6:9 “And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Deu 11:18 And you shall lay up these Words of Mine in your heart and in your being, and shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.

Deu 11:19 And you shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up,

Deu 11:20 and shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,

Pierce the ear – Psa 40:6 Slaughtering and meal offering You did not desire; You have opened my ears; Ascending offering and sin offering You did not ask for.

Mat_11:15 “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!

Mat_13:9 “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

2Ti 4:3 For there shall be a time when they shall not bear sound teaching, but according to their own desires, they shall heap up for themselves teachers tickling the ear,b Footnote: b Isa_30:10, Jer_5:31, Rom_16:18.

2Ti 4:4 and they shall indeed turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to myths.

Rom 16:18 For such ones do not serve our Master יהושע Messiah, but their own stomach, and by smooth words and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the innocent.

Isa 30:8 And go, write it before them on a tablet, and inscribe it on a scroll, that it is for a latter day, a witness forever:

Isa 30:9 that this is a rebellious people, lying children, children who refuse to hear the Torah of יהוה,

Isa 30:10 who say to the seers, “Do not see,” and to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us what is right. Speak to us what is smooth, prophesy deceits.

Jer 5:31 The prophets have prophesied falsely, and the priests rule by their own hand, and My people have loved it so. And what are you going to do at the end of it?

Or,

Zec 7:11 “But they refused to listen, and they shrugged their shoulders, and stopped their ears from hearing.

Zec 7:12 “And they made their hearts like flint against hearing the Torah, and the words, which יהוה of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets. Therefore great wrath came from יהוה of hosts.

Zec 7:13 “And it came to be: as He called and they did not hear, so let them call, but I shall not hear,” said יהוה of hosts.

Pro 28:9 He who turns away his ear from hearing the Torah, Even his prayer is an abomination.

Pro 15:29 יהוה is far from the wrong ones, But He hears the prayer of the righteous.

Verses 7-11 – Let’s look closely at part of verse 8 and 9: Exo 21:8 “If she is displeasing in the eyes of her master who has engaged her to himself, then he shall let her be ransomed. He shall have no authority to sell her to a foreign people, because of him deceiving her.

Exo 21:9 “And if he has engaged her to his son, he is to do to her as is the right of daughters.

Who is being spoken of here? Let’s look a little closer: Exo 21:10 “If he takes another wife, her food, her covering, and her marriage rights are not to be diminished.

Mat 6:31 “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’

Mat 6:32 “For all these the nations seek for. And your heavenly Father knows that you need all these.

Mat_20:28 even as the Son of Aḏam did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Mar_10:45 “For even the Son of Aḏam did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

1Ti_2:6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be witnessed in its own seasons,

Verses 12-14 – Murderers shall be put to death. The accidental death of someone does allow the perpetrator to flee to a refuge but those who kill intentionally cannot even find refuge in YHVH’s house.

Verse 15 – 1Ti 1:8 And we know that the Torah is good if one uses it legitimately,

1Ti 1:9 knowing this: that Torah is not laid down for a righteous being, but for the lawless and unruly, for the wicked and for sinners, for the wrong-doers and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers,

Verse 16 – Kidnappers are to be put to death. The price of a foreign slave was 20 shekels of silver. (Joseph) The price of a Hebrew man between the ages of 20-60 years of age was 50 shekels of silver and the price of a bride was 30 shekels of silver. Yeshua was sold for 30 shekels of silver.

Verse 17 – Cursing your father or mother. Death. Pro 1:8 My son, heed the discipline of your father, And do not forsake the Torah of your mother;

Pro 20:20 Whoever curses his father or his mother, His lamp is put out in deep darkness.

Verses 18-27 – Causing injury in a fight. Causing the death of an unborn child = Death!

Verses 28-29 – A stoned ox is not eaten. Why not? If the ox had a history of goring but the owner did not restrain it the owner is stoned with the ox.

Verses 30-32(also 35-36) – Ransoming the life of the owner of the ox. A is the symbol for Aleph, l is the symbol for the Lamed. Together they spell El. The price for the ransom is 30 pieces of silver.

Zec 11:12 And I said to them, “If it is good in your eyes, give me my wages. And if not, refrain.” So they weighed out for my wages thirty pieces of silver.

Mat 26:14 Then one of the twelve, called Yehuḏah from Qerioth, went to the chief priests,

Mat 26:15 and said, “What would you give me to deliver Him to you?” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver.

Mat 27:9 Then was filled what was spoken by Yirmeyahu the prophet, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of Him who was pierced, on whom they of the children of Yisra’ěl set a price,

Verses 33-34 – Digging a pit. Is it really talking about a pit?

Mat 12:11 And He said to them, “What man is there among you who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, shall not take hold of it and lift it out?

Mat 12:12 “How much more worth is a man than a sheep! So it is right to do good on the Sabbath.”

Mat 10:6 but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Yisra’ěl.

Mat 15:24 And He answering, said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Yisra’ěl.”

Psa 7:15 He has made a pit and dug it out, And falls into the ditch he made!

Psa 9:15 Tet The nations have sunk down in the pit which they made; In the net which they hid, their own foot is caught.

Pro 28:10 He who causes the straight to go astray in an evil way, Falls into his own pit; But the perfect inherit the good.
