Verses 1-2 – These two verses are linked to verses 12-13 so I will cover them there.
Verses 3-8 – Chapter 13 is a short chapter but it is a very important chapter. The verses are tightly woven and form a command about the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the month of Abib (Aviv) and being set-apart. Once again, Passover is not a “festival” but rather a preparation day for Unleavened Bread. Chapter 12:11 tells us how we are to keep Passover, that we should be ready to flee. Chapter 13 makes it clear the Unleavened Bread is the festival and it is to commemorate Yisra’el being brought out of Mitsrayim. What is the big deal about unleavened Bread?
Mat_16:6 And יהושע said to them, “Mind! And beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
Mat_16:11 “How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread, but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees?”
Mat_16:12 Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.
Mar_8:15 And He was warning them, saying, “Mind! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the leaven of Herodes.”
Luk_12:1 Meanwhile, when an innumerable crowd of people had gathered together, so that they trampled one another, He began to say to His taught ones, first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Luk_13:21 “It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour until it was all leavened.”
Now that we have come out of Mitsrayim/Babylon/the church we can see how important it is to put off all the traditions of men and to hold fast to the teachings (Torah/Torot) of Elohim. Mar_7:13 nullifying the Word of Elohim through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such traditions you do.”
This time of year we can see very plainly how the traditions of men have nullified the teachings of Elohim. People will fight tooth and nail over Christmas as a “holy” day when it is just one more invention of man. Next, after that, is the New Year, but Scripture teaches us that the new year, Abib, is in the spring when the barley is in the head.
Verse 8 tells us that all of this is so that we will teach our children and our children’s children that we keep these days set-apart to YHVH because He brought us out of Mitsrayim.
Verses 9-10 – By keeping His feast and Festivals we are not only showing that we recognize His Torah/Torot as His Word but that it shall be a sign of the covenant that He gave us. It is to be a sign on our (right) hand ((the work that we do)) and a reminder between our eyes ((the thoughts that we think)) and that we are to keep speaking His Word so that we know them, our children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews or babysit or keep or teach. How old are these children? Some are quite young, under a year old but perhaps they are a little older, 30, 40, 50 or more years old. Children can be anyone who is new to or inexperienced in His Word.
We must also teach the “children” how to know or recognize the appointed times. It seems as though that each moon (month) or year is a new test or challenge. Should we keep the renewed moon if sighted by artificial means? Is the barley mature enough to start the new year? What about a lunar sabbath? Or, what about the equinox to start the new year? When is leaven, leaven? Or, not leaven? By showing our “children” that these things are important to us because they are in YHVH’s Word we are giving them an example or better yet a testimony of just how seriously we take Yah’s Word.
Please note the differences between the celebration of Unleavened Bread in Shem. 13 and Way. 23. Why are they different? Or, are they different?
Verses 1-2 & 11-16 – First please note that there is no distinction according to sex until you get to verse 12. Look at the word used in verse 12 to distinguish between male and female: H2145 – זָכָר – zâkâr – zaw-kawr’ – From H2142; properly remembered, that is, a male (of man or animals, as being the most noteworthy sex): – X him, male, man (child, -kind).
We have talked about this before, Semitic languages are gender specific but male dominant. That is why the story about Dinah is so important. We see in Scripture that Ya’aqob had other daughters but they were not important to the story so they were not mentioned.
Notice in verse 13 we see the use of the word “ransom”: H6299 – פָּדָה – pâdâh – paw-daw’ – A primitive root; to sever, that is, ransom; generally to release, preserve: – X at all, deliver, X by any means, ransom, (that are to be, let be) redeem (-ed), rescue, X surely.
Look at some of the key works used for ransom: to sever, to release, preserve, to deliver, redeem, rescue. Who is being rescued and for what are they being rescued? Deu 7:8 but because of יהוה loving you, and because of Him guarding the oath which He swore to your fathers, יהוה has brought you out with a strong hand, and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh sovereign of Mitsrayim.
Deu 9:26 “And I prayed to יהוה, and said, ‘O Master יהוה, do not destroy Your people and Your inheritance whom You have redeemed in Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Mitsrayim with a strong hand.
Deu 13:5 “And that prophet or that dreamer of dreams is put to death, because he has spoken apostasy against יהוה your Elohim – who brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim and redeemed you from the house of bondage – to make you stray from the way in which יהוה your Elohim commanded you to walk. Thus you shall purge the evil from your midst.
Deu 15:15 “And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Mitsrayim, and יהוה your Elohim redeemed you. Therefore I am commanding you this word today.
Deu 15:16 “And it shall be, when he says to you, ‘I do not go away from you,’ because he loves you and your house, because it is good for him with you,
Deu 15:17 then you shall take an awl and thrust it through his ear to the door, and he shall be your servant forever. Do the same to your female servant.
Deu 21:8 ‘O יהוה, forgive Your people Yisra’ĕl, whom You have redeemed, and do not allow innocent blood in the midst of Your people Yisra’ĕl.’ And the blood-guilt shall be pardoned to them.
Mat 27:24 And when Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but rather an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this Righteous One. You shall see to it.”
Mat 27:25 And all the people answering, said, “His blood be on us and on our children.”
We have discussed this before, Yeshua’s (first born lamb) blood redeemed us for our serving foreign mighty ones(gods). Now we are supposed to know better and be obedient to YHVH’s Commands and walk in His Ways. After the Second Coming, in the fall, prior to the Wedding Feast of the Lamb (Sukkot) we are to be judged on the tenth day of the seventh month. If the Blood of the Lamb is not found on us there will be no atonement(covering of sin): Rev_7:14 And I said to him, “Master, you know.” And he said to me, “These are those coming out of the great distress, having washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
Rev_12:11 “And they overcame him because of the Blood of the Lamb, and because of the Word of their witness, and they did not love their lives to the death.
Verses 17-18 – We will see in the Book of Yasher that the Tribe of Dan left ahead of the other tribes and went along the shoreline and ran into the Philistines and were defeated in battle and ran back to Goshen to later go out with the other tribes. The Philistines did indeed occupy much of the coastline of North Africa, and modern Israel, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey. They were the predominant sea power during this time. Instead of having Yisra’el leave Mitsrayim and go into battle immediately, YHVH took them into what is known as the Sinai Desert and brought them to the Sea of Reeds. There are reasons for this as well and we will talk about them in later chapters.
Is this the only reason that YHVH did not take His Bride, Yisra’el along the northern route where they may have to fight?
Deu 24:5 “When a man has taken a new wife, let him not go out into the army nor let any matter be imposed upon him. He shall be exempt one year for the sake of his home, to rejoice with his wife whom he has taken.
In verse 18 we see a euphemism being used. Look at the word in the Scriptures rendered “armed. It is the Hebrew word “hamushim”. It is translated in the KJV as “harnessed”. H2571 – חמשׁ – châmûsh –
BDB Definition: 1) in battle array, arrayed for battle by fives, armed: It comes from the root word H2568 – חמשּׁה / חמשׁ – châmêsh / chămishshâh – BDB Definition: 1) five 1a) five (cardinal number) 1b) a multiple of five (with another number) 1c) fifth (ordinal number)
Isa 59:16 And He saw that there was no man, and was astonished that there was no intercessor. So His own arm saved for Him, and His righteousness upheld him.
Isa 59:17 And He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of deliverance on His head. And He put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and wrapped Himself with ardour as a mantle.
Verse 19 – Bones of Yoseph: H6106 – עֶצֶם – ‛etsem – eh’-tsem – From H6105; a bone (as strong); by extension the body; figuratively the substance, that is, (as pronoun) selfsame: – body, bone, X life, (self-) same, strength, X very.
Verse 20 – Sukkot was in Goshen and Etham would be just before the modern Suez Canal. The Wilderness of Etham I believe to be what we know as the Sinai Desert today. I believe, also, that the Cildren of Yisra’el went through what we call today the Mitla Pass which is the shortest route for Goshen to La Nuweiba Beach on the Reeds Sea. Notice in Shem. 12:37 they left for Ramses and went to Sukkot. Think about what is being said here. H7486 – רעמסס / רעמסס – ra‛mesês / ra‛amsês – BDB Definition: Raamses or Rameses = “child of the sun”. The Children of Yisra’el went for being “children of the sun” to keeping the sabbaths of YHVH: Exo 31:13 “And you, speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl, saying, ‘My Sabbaths you are to guard, by all means, for it is a sign1 between Me and you throughout your generations, to know that I, יהוה, am setting you apart.
Exo 31:14 ‘And you shall guard the Sabbath, for it is set-apart to you. Everyone who profanes it shall certainly be put to death, for anyone who does work on it, that being shall be cut off from among his people.
Eze 20:12 “And I also gave them My Sabbaths, to be a sign1 between them and Me, to know that I am יהוה who sets them apart.
Eze 20:20 ‘And set apart My Sabbaths, and they shall be a sign between Me and you, to know that I am יהוה your Elohim.’
The Children of Yisra’el have now gone for Sukkot to Etham: H864 – אתם – ‘êthâm – BDB Definition:
Etham = “with them: their plowshare”
Isa_7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. H6005 – עמּנוּאל – ‛immânû’êl – BDB Definition: Immanuel = “God with us” or “with us is God”
Mic 4:1 And in the latter days it shall be that the mountain of the House of יהוה is established on the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills. And peoples shall flow to it.
Mic 4:2 And many nations shall come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of יהוה, to the House of the Elohim of Yaʽaqoḇ, and let Him teach us His ways, and let us walk in His paths. For out of Tsiyon comes forth the Torah, and the word of יהוה from Yerushalayim.”
Mic 4:3 And He shall judge among many peoples, and reprove strong nations afar off. They shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks – nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither teach battle any more.
Mic 4:4 But each one shall sit under his vine and under his fig tree, with no one to make them afraid, for the mouth of יהוה of hosts has spoken.
Mic 4:5 For all the peoples walk, each one in the name of his mighty one, but we walk in the Name of יהוה our Elohim forever and ever.
