Shemoth (Exodus) 9

Lesson date: 9/2/5855AA

Verse 1-2 – Plague Number 5 – YHVH”s message is the same, “Let My people go!”
We see it used in Shem. 5:1, 7:16, 8:1, 8, 20-21; 9:13, 17; 10:3-4 and the message is the same, “Let My people go so that they serve Me (or slaughter to me). What has changed between the “Let My people go,” message and the command He gives us, “Come out of her My people?”

Jeremiah, the prophet, loved Yisra’el, the nation and the people and prayed for them over and over but what did the Father tell Jeremiah? Jer_15:1 And יהוה said to me, “Even if Mosheh and Shemu’ĕl were to stand before Me, My being is not toward this people. Send them away from My presence, let them go.

This is not the worst of it. When the people refused to hear the True Word of YHVH and turn from their sins and false gods it got worse: Jer_7:16 “And you, do not pray for this people, nor lift up a cry or prayer for them, nor make intercession to Me, for I do not hear you.
Jer_11:14 “And you, do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them, for I do not hear them in the time that they cry out to Me because of their evil.
Jer_14:11 And יהוה said to me, “Do not pray for this people for their good.

I believe America has reached this point. We know judgment is coming we just don’t know when it will start. So, we have a decision to make; will will come out of Mitsrayim/Babel and serve the True Most High Elohim of Yisra’el or will He say “Let them go?”

Verse 3-5 – Once again we see Hebrew word play being used in the message to Pharaoh, that is why I have linked verses 3-5 together. Let’s look at the word for “pestilence” – H1698 – דֶּבֶר – deber – deh’-ber
From H1696 (in the sense of destroying); a pestilence: – murrain, pestilence, plague.
And, what does it say in verse 5? “Tomorrow יהוה is going to do this word in the land.”
H1697 – דָּבָר – dâbâr – daw-bawr’ – From H1696; a word; by implication a matter (as spoken of) of thing;

Isa 55:10 “For as the rain comes down, and the snow from the heavens, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, and give seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
Isa 55:11 so is My Word that goes forth from My mouth – it does not return to Me empty, but shall do what I please, and shall certainly accomplish what I sent it for.

His Word will not go out in vain but accomplishes what He sent it to do! Amain. Stop and think about it. His Word can be either a blessing or a curse. It is a blessing to all those seeking the truth, hungering and thirsting after Yah’s Word: Amo 8:11 “See, days are coming,” declares the Master יהוה, “that I shall send a hunger in the land, not a hunger for bread, nor a thirst for water, but for hearing the Words of יהוה.

But what of the unrighteous? Is His Word a blessing? No: Isa_28:13 But the Word of יהוה was to them, “Command upon command, command upon command, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little,” so that they go and shall stumble backward, and be broken and snared and taken captive.
Isa 8:13 “יהוה of hosts, Him you shall set apart. Let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread.
Isa 8:14 “And He shall be for a set-apart place, but a stone of stumbling and a rock that makes for falling (for a rock of offence(KJV)) to both the houses of Yisra’ĕl, as a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Yerushalayim.
Isa 8:15 “And many among them shall stumble and fall, and be broken and snared and taken.”

Has anyone ever said to you, “I hope it doesn’t offend you?” Our faith in YHVH and His Full Gospel has become an offence to others around us, even our blood kin.

Verse 5 also shows us that judgment has an appointed time: And יהוה set an appointed time,
H4150 – מוֹעָדָה מֹעֵד מוֹעֵד – mô‛êd mô‛êd mô‛âdâh – mo-ade’, mo-ade’, mo-aw-daw’ – From H3259; properly an appointment, that is, a fixed time or season; specifically a festival;

Going back to verse 3 we see that the judgment shall be on the livestock of Mitsrayim. All the livestock of Mitsrayim will die. ((This is very important to remember.)) We see YHVH make a distinction between Mitsrayim and Yisra’el. None of the livestock of the Children of Yisra’el will die. Once again we see a separation between Mitsrayim, with its pantheon of false gods, and those living in Goshen (to draw near) worshipping the One True Elohim of Yisra’el.

Verse 6-7 – If you compare verse 6 to verse 3 you will see a difference in terminology: livestock (H4735) and cattle (H1241). As you can see in the definition below H4735 can mean cattle but can also be livestock collectively, whereas H1241 primarily refers to oxen. Oxen are cattle of any sex that is used for draft purposes, i.e. pulling a wagon or pulling a plough(plow).

H4735 – מִקְנֶה – miqneh – mik-neh’ – VerseFrom H7069; something bought, that is, property, but only live stock; abstractly acquisition: – cattle, flock, herd, possession, purchase, substance.

By bringing judgment upon the livestock YHVH was directly attacking the cow-headed goddess, Hathor; goddess of love, protection and fertility. There were cults of bull-headed gods as well, Apis (the soul of Osiris was believed to reside in Apis), Buchis and Mneuis. Oftentimes, a bull was considered the embodiment of Ptah and/Ra.

Once again we see the outcome exactly as YHVH had said, All the livestock in Egypt died but none of the livestock in Goshen, of the Children of Yisra’el died.

Verse 8-12 Plague Number 6 – Boils – It may not sound like much but this is one of the widest reaching plagues of the 10. Mitsrayim had many gods and goddesses of medicine and healing (Thoth, Isis, Im-Hotep, Sekhmet) so, it attacks several all at once. Ever hear the expression “the Devil is in the detail?” It is the detailed instructions that YHVH gives Mosheh that makes the plague even worse.

The Mitsrites believed in human sacrifice and practiced it when necessary. At about this time I am sure that the priests and magicians of Mitsrayim are ready to sacrifice someone to the lion-headed god Sekhmet, who was the god of epidemics, plagues and pestilences. The live human sacrifice would be taken up to the highest altar and there burned alive until only ashes remained. Then the priests would take the ashes and throw them into the air so that the wind could distribute them onto the populace. Whoever had ash fall upon them received a medical blessing. Sound familiar? YHVH had Mosheh and Aharon duplicate the process, without the human sacrifice, and in so doing brought about a curse upon everyone.

These boils were not your run of the mill boil like, you might get from the seam of your pants rubbing grit or dirt into your skin. The word for boil here is H7833 -shekheen – which is a burning, festering, septic boil which can literally be called skin anthrax. Not only could the magicians not duplicate the plague but they were in such pain, because of the boils on their feet that they could not even stand in the presence of Pharaoh.

Do we see any correlation between this plague and anything in the B’rit Hadasha? Rev 16:1 And I heard a loud voice from the Dwelling Place saying to the seven messengers, “Go and pour out the bowls of the wrath of Elohim on the earth.”

Rev 16:2 And the first went and poured out his bowl upon the earth, and an evil and wicked sore came upon the men, those having the mark of the beast and those worshipping his image.
Rev 9:21 And they did not repent of their murders, nor of their drug sorceries, nor of their whoring, nor of their thefts.
Rev 18:23 “And the light of a lamp shall not shine in you any more at all. And the voice of bridegroom and bride shall not be heard in you any more at all. For your merchants were the great ones of the earth, for by your drug sorcery all the nations were led astray.

Gal 5:19 And the works of the flesh are well-known, which are these: adultery, whoring, uncleanness, indecency,
Gal 5:20 idolatry, drug sorcery, hatred, quarrels, jealousies, fits of rage, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions,
Gal 5:21 envy, murders, drunkenness, wild parties, and the like – of which I forewarn you, even as I also said before, that those who practise such as these shall not inherit the reign of Elohim.

It is very important to take a look at verse 10 at this time. Let’s just look at the second part of 10: And they caused boils, breaking out in sores on man and beast.
Beast = H929 – בּהמה – behêmâh – BDB Definition: 1) beast, cattle, animal; 1a) beasts (collective of all animals); 1b) cattle, livestock (of domestic animals)

Where did the livestock come for? Do you see how it is not possible for these plagues to happen within mere days or, even weeks or months of each other. It would have taken many months for the buyers of livestock to go outside of Mitsrayim and purchase a sufficient quantity of breeding livestock in order to reproduce the vast herds that had died off in Plague Number 5. It takes 15 months gestation time for a jenny to produce one foal.

Verses 13-34 – Plague Number 7 – Like the sixth plague, this plague will go in the face of more than one Mitsrite god. Please note how the prophecy starts: Rise up early in the morning,

H7925 – שָׁכַם – shâkam – shaw-kam’ – A primitive root; properly to incline (the shoulder to a burden); but used only as denominative from H7926; literally to load up (on the back of man or beast), that is, to start early in the morning:

We would say today “First thing in the morning” but it goes deeper than that. The meaning that it conveys is “Make this your first priority in the morning.”

2Ch_36:15 And יהוה Elohim of their fathers sent to them, by His messengers, rising up early and sending them, for He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place.

Jer_7:13 “And now, because you have done all these works,” declares יהוה, “and I spoke to you, rising up early and speaking, but you did not hear, and I called you, but you did not answer,

Jer_7:25 “From the day that your fathers came out of the land of Mitsrayim until this day, I have even sent to you all My servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them.

Jer_11:7 ‘For I earnestly warned your fathers in the day that I brought them up out of the land of Mitsrayim, until this day, rising early and warning, saying, “Obey My voice.”

Jer_26:5 to listen to the words of My servants the prophets I am sending you, even rising up early and sending them – though you have not listened –

Jer_29:19 ‘For they did not heed My words,’ declares יהוה, ‘which I sent to them by My servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, yet you did not listen,’ declares יהוה.

Jer_32:33 “And they have turned their back to Me, and not their face – though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, they did not listen to receive instruction.

Jer_35:15 “And I sent to you all My servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, ‘Turn, each one from his evil way, and make good your deeds, and do not go after other mighty ones to serve them, and you shall dwell in the land which I have given you and your fathers.’ But you have not inclined your ear, nor obeyed Me.

Do you see how in some of the verses we could say: “YHVH is rising up early to send His servants or rising up early to teach us? That would be literally correct but the implied meaning is “YHVH’s first priority is to send His servants to His people or to teach them His Word.” Think of all the times Yeshua told His disciples to “Watch”. G1127 – γρηγορεύω – grēgoreuō – gray-gor-yoo’-o- From G1453; to keep awake, that is, watch (literally or figuratively): – be vigilant, wake, (be) watch (-ful).

Peter adds to this exhortation: 1Pe 5:8 Be sober, watch, because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

1Pe 5:9 Resist him, firm in the belief, knowing that the same hardships are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.

1Pe 5:10 And the Elohim of all favour, who called you to His everlasting esteem by Messiah יהושע, after you have suffered a while, Himself perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.

Peter adds to be sober – nepho – G3525 – νήφω – nēphō – nay’-fo – Of uncertain affinity; to abstain from wine (keep sober), that is, (figuratively) be discreet: – be sober, watch.

What is the wine that we need to keep away for? Any wine? Consider this: Rev 17:2 with whom the sovereigns of the earth committed whoring, and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her whoring.”

Do we need to stay awake and keep watch? No, we are going to be raptured. Do we need to keep watch and study to show that we are approved? No! Once saved always saved. Making this personal once again almost all the modern Christian thrology I was taught was to show me that I did not need to be vigilant: Php 2:12 So that, my beloved, as you always obeyed – not only in my presence, but now much rather in my absence – work out your own deliverance with fear and trembling,

Mat 13:25 but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed darnel among the wheat and went away.
Mat 25:5 “Now while the bridegroom took time, they all slumbered and slept.

Mar 13:35 “Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming – in the evening or at midnight, or at the crowing of the cock, or in the morning,
Mar 13:36 lest, coming suddenly, he should find you sleeping.
Mar 13:37 “And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!

Why are these verses so important? Look at the word slept: G2518 – καθεύδω – katheudō – kath-yoo’-do – From G2596 and εὕδω heudō (to sleep); to lie down to rest, that is, (by implication) to fall asleep (literally or figuratively): – (be a-) sleep. This is not all. I also has the connotation of indifference to ones salvation.

Verses 14-16 tells Pharaoh what the purpose of the plagues is, to magnify the Word of Elohim. YHVH tells Pharaoh that he could easily send a pestilence and destroy the Mitsrites but that would not serve His purpose. He is graciously sparing the Mitsrites so that they will know that He is the Most High Elohim of the Hebrews, so once again He attacks their gods.
Plague Number 7 is a plague of hail which is a direct affront to the sky goddess of Nut, the god of the air Shu, Tefnut the goddess of water/moisture (linked with the sun and moon) and also Seth who will be attacked by the ensuing chaos, thunder, infertility and even the desert itself.

Look what happens in verse 20: Exo 9:20 Those among the servants of Pharaoh who feared the word of יהוה made their servants and livestock flee to the houses.

The people of Mitsrayim started listening to the Word of YHVH. They quit listening to the priests and magicians crying out: “Don’t listen to Mosheh and Aharon. That is fake news!” But finally the web of deceit is falling apart and the people are beginning to hear the Truth.
In verses 23-25 we see that YHVH sent fire, hail and thunder and whoever or whatever was in the field died.

Rev_8:7 And the first messenger sounded, and there came to be hail and fire mixed with blood, and they were thrown to the earth. And a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.
Rev_11:19 And the Dwelling Place of Elohim was opened in the heaven, and the ark of His covenant was seen in His Dwelling Place. And there came to be lightnings, and voices, and thunders, and an earthquake, and great hail.
Rev_16:21 And great hail from the heaven fell upon men, every hailstone about the weight of a talent. And men blasphemed Elohim for the plague of the hail, because that plague was exceedingly great.

It happened to Sedom, Amorah, Tseboyim and Admah, it happened to Egypt and it will happen again.

Verse 26 shows us that His people in Goshen (to draw near) were set-apart for the plague.
Verse 27 shows us that even with YHVH hardening the heart of Pharaoh he is beginning to realize that he has sinned toward YHVH.
In verse 30 we see Mosheh tell Pharaoh that he knows that Pharaoh and his servants do not yet have a “true” fear of Elohim.

Verses 31 and 32 are very important and we will refer back to them later but their importance is in giving us a clue how we use the agriculture of the land to determine the moedim.

Verses 33 -35 I think are very telling. Pharaoh reminds me of modern Christianity. “I just did what I wanted to and boy did I get away with it.” We never get “away” with it. When the world hardens its heart to YHVH’s commands and declares them obsolete or done away with it is committing iniquity or lawlessness.
G458 – ἀνομία – anomia – an-om-ee’-ah – From G459; illegality, that is, violation of law or (generally) wickedness: – iniquity, X transgress (-ion of) the law, unrighteousness.

G459 – ἄνομος – anomos – an’-om-os – From G1 (as a negative particle) and G3551; lawless, that is, (negatively) not subject to (the Jewish) law; (by implication a Gentile), or (positively) wicked: – without law, lawless, transgressor, unlawful, wicked.

G3551 – νόμος – nomos – nom’-os – From a primary word νέμω nemō (to parcel out, especially food or grazing to animals); law (through the idea of prescriptive usage), generally (regulation), specifically (of Moses [including the volume]; also of the Gospel), or figuratively (a principle): – law.

Ahavah,
