Shemoth (Exodus) 6

Lesson date: 8/11/5855AA

Verse 1 – Please remember how I said certain verses were linked to one another because of the verbs used in the verses. Let’s look at verse 1 and see how it may be linked to another verse in its sequence: “Now see what I do to Pharaoh,”

“See” used here is once again ra’ah – H7200 – ראה – râ’âh – BDB Definition: 1) to see, look at, inspect, perceive, consider. Quickly jump down to verse 3 so that we can tie the two together: “And I appeared to Aḇraham,”

The word used for appeared is once again H7200 so, instead of using the definition of appeared or to see, try using the word “manifested” – – וָאֵרָא – ‘va’erah’ – which is the root word ra’ah written in the niphal (passive) verb tense meaning to appear, present oneself or manifest oneself. Look up the word manifest and you will find it has a synonym – reveal. YHVH revealed Himself to Abraham, Yitshaq, Ya’aqob and Mosheh. Now, if you will pardon me just a bit let’s look at the same type of word in Greek, not the same word but the same type of word – G602 – ἀποκάλυψις – apokalupsis – ap-ok-al’-oop-sis

From G601; disclosure: – appearing, coming, lighten, manifestation, be revealed, revelation.

This is the word we get the English word Apocalypse from which is synonymous with death, destruction, famine and all kinds of evil. But, it literally means to “manifest or reveal” and is the origin for the Book of Revelation.

Taking the context of chapter 6:1-3 for Chapter 5:22-23 we see Mosheh bemoan the fact that things have become worse for the Children of Yisra’el since he has intervened on their behalf at the command of YHVH: “to speak in Your Name”. This is the very context for the declaration from YHVH in verse 2: “I am YHVH”.

Verse 3 shows us that Abraham, Yitshaq and Ya’aqob knew YHVH by His Name YHVH and His title El Shaddai (Most Powerful, Almighty, Destroyer). This refers Mosheh back to what YHVH tells Mosheh in verse 1: “Now see what I do to Pharaoh,”. This is like a saying that Von and I have, “Look out head, here comes a thumping”. Look closely at the word for strong: H2389 – חָזָק – châzâq – khaw-zawk’ – From H2388; strong (usually in a bad sense, hard, bold, violent): This reinforces YHVH’s Title El Shaddai and He is telling Mosheh not only will Pharaoh let the Children of Yisra’el go but he will drive them out of Mitsrayim.

But verse 3 also makes it plain that YHVH had revealed Himself to Abraham, Yitshaq and Ya’aqob through His Chosen Messenger: Berěshith 12:8 “And from there he moved to the mountain east of Běyth Ěl, and he pitched his tent, with Běyth Ěl on the west and Ai on the east. And he built there an altar to יהוה , and called on the Name of יהוה .”

Berěshith 13:4 “to the place of the altar which he had made there at first. And there Aḇram called on the Name ofיהוה .”

Berěshith 17:1 “And it came to be when Aḇram was ninety-nine years old, that יהוה appeared to Aḇram and said to him, “I am Ěl Shaddai – walk before Me and be perfect.”

Berěshith 26:25 “And he built an altar there, and called on the Name of יהוה , and he pitched his tent there, and the servants of Yitsḥaq dug a well there.”

Berěshith 28:13 “And see, יהוה stood above it and said, “I am יהוה Elohim of Aḇraham your father and the Elohim of Yitsḥaq. The land on which you are lying, I give it to you and your seed.”

Verse 4 – In languages other than English there are ways of expressing an action in such a way that we that it took place in the past, it is taking place now and will take place in the future. Many of the Latin based languages have this ability to communicate this type of action. Hebrew has the same ability and we see it used in verse 4 with the word for “established” – H6965 – קוּם – qûm – koom – A primitive root; to rise (in various applications, literally, figuratively, intensively and causatively): – abide, accomplish, X be clearer, confirm, continue, ((This is just a small sample of what the word can mean))

The word is written in the Hiphil active verb tense and by doing this we see that YHVH established His covenant with Abraham, Yitshaq and Ya’aqob yesterday today and forever.

Heb 13:8  יהושע Messiah is the same yesterday, and today, and forever.

The word for “covenant” is H1285 – בְּרִית – berı̂yth – ber-eeth’ – From H1262 (in the sense of cutting (like H1254)); a compact (because made by passing between pieces of flesh): – confederacy, [con-]feder[-ate], covenant, league.

Notice that H1285 comes for H1262 – בּרה – bârâh – BDB Definition: 1) to eat, consume 1a) (Qal) to eat 1b) (Piel) for eating, devouring 1c) (Hiphil) to cause to eat ((Author’s note: in other words: to eat a covenant meal))

Gen 9:9  “And I, see, I establish My covenant with you and with your seed after you,

Gen 9:10  and with every living creature that is with you: of the birds, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ark, every beast of the earth.

Gen 9:11  “And I shall establish My covenant with you, and never again is all flesh cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again is there a flood to destroy the earth.”

Gen 9:12  And Elohim said, “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for all generations to come:

Gen 9:13  “I shall set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.

Gen 9:14  “And it shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud,

Gen 9:15  and I shall remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh, and never again let the waters become a flood to destroy all flesh.

Gen 9:16  “And the rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I shall see it, to remember the everlasting covenant between Elohim and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”

Gen 9:17  And Elohim said to Noaḥ,“This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

Gen_17:7  “And I shall establish My covenant between Me and you and your seed after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be Elohim to you and your seed after you.

Gen_17:13  “He who is born in your house, and he who is bought with your silver, has to be circumcised. So shall My covenant be in your flesh, for an everlasting covenant.

Gen_17:19  And Elohim said, “No, Sarah your wife is truly bearing a son to you, and you shall call his name Yitsḥaq. And I shall establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

H5769 – עלם / עולם – ‛ôlâm

BDB Definition: 1) long duration, antiquity, futurity, for ever, ever, everlasting, evermore, perpetual, old, ancient, world 1a) ancient time, long time (of past) 1b) (of future) 1b1) for ever, always 1b2) continuous existence, perpetual 1b3) everlasting, indefinite or unending future, eternity

Eternal, continuous not interrupted by a dispensation of the Gentiles but unending, perpetual quite literally unending future or continuous existence.

Just like His covenant is everlasting His Word is also everlasting and such, a very finite person like myself, always learns something new in and about His word. Let me show you something that I learned about His Covenant with Abraham.

In ancient times when two people had a cause for a covenant a sacrifice was cut in two and the pieces separated and the blood for the animal(s) would form a pool. Both of the parties to the covenant would walk through the blood in both directions so that the footprints left was a reminder of the covenant. This was called the Blood Path. After completing this part of the ritual they would exchange their robes, weapons, staffs and maybe even rings. This would symbolize that the two parties would, be as one (robes), fight as one (weapons), walk as one (staffs) and live as one (rings, like husband and wife).

Gen 38:18  So he said, “What pledge should I give you?” And she said, “Your seal and your cord and your staff that is in your hand.” And he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him.

The above passage makes more sense in this context.

But look what happened when Abraham and YHVH entered into a covenant relationship: Gen 15:9  And He said to him, “Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, and a three-year-old female goat, and a three-year-old ram, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”

Gen 15:10  And he took all these to Him and cut them in the middle, and placed each half opposite the other, but he did not cut the birds.

Gen 15:11  And the birds of prey came down on the carcasses, and Aḇram drove them away.

Gen 15:12  And it came to be, when the sun was going down, and a deep sleep fell upon Aḇram, that see, a frightening great darkness fell upon him.

Gen 15:13  And He said to Aḇram, “Know for certain that your seed are to be sojourners in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them, and they shall afflict them four hundred years.

Gen 15:14  “But the nation whom they serve I am going to judge, and afterward let them come out with great possessions.

Gen 15:15  “Now as for you, you are to go to your fathers in peace, you are to be buried at a good old age.

Gen 15:16  “Then, in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the crookedness of the Amorites is not yet complete.”

Gen 15:17  And it came to be, when the sun went down and it was dark, that see, a smoking oven and a burning torch passing between those pieces.

Gen 15:18  On the same day יהוה made a covenant with Aḇram, saying, “I have given this land to your seed, from the river of Mitsrayim to the great river, the River Euphrates,

If you look closely Abram went to sleep and YHVH Himself, as represented by the messenger moving as a smoking oven and burning torch. Do you know what this means? We will talk about it.

1                      2                      3                      4                      5                      6                      7

Exo 19:10  And יהוה said to Mosheh, “Go to the people and set them apart today and tomorrow. And they shall wash their garments,

Exo 19:11  and shall be prepared by the third day. For on the third day יהוה shall come down upon Mount Sinai before the eyes of all the people.

Verse 5 – Makes it very plain that YHVH “hears” and “remembers”.

Verses 6-8 – Exo 6:6  “Say, therefore, to the children of Yisra’ĕl, ‘I am יהוה, and I shall bring you out from under the burdens of the Mitsrites, and shall deliver you from their enslaving, and shall redeem you with an outstretched arm, and with great judgments,

Exo 6:7  and shall take you as My people, and I shall be your Elohim. And you shall know that I am יהוה your Elohim who is bringing you out from under the burdens of the Mitsrites.

Exo 6:8  ‘And I shall bring you into the land which I swore to give to Aḇraham, to Yitsḥaq, and to Yaʽaqoḇ, to give it to you as an inheritance. I am יהוה.’ ”

YHVH makes 7 “I shall” statements or promises to His People. That is not all, there are 7 words for you (masculine plural) also found in the scriptures above and you =  אֶּתְּכֶּם – ‘eth’ḵem’ from H859 which is from H853. Do you see it?

YHVH is saying “I Shall”     (fill in the blank)    “to you” by the aleph tav: Rev 1:8  “I am the ‘Aleph’ and the ‘Taw’, Beginning and End,” says יהוה “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Let’s look at these “I shall” statements:

  • AND I SHALL BRING YOU OUT – וְּהוֹצֵאתִי אֶֶּּתְּכֶּם – ‘uhotseyathiy eth’ḵem’ – I shall bring you out (from your burdens)… סִבְּלָה – siḇlah – Strong’s H5450 – ‘burdens, hard labour’. This word is only used 6 times in Scripture and all 6 times are in Shemoth. Mat_11:30  “For My yoke is gentle and My burden is light.”
  • AND I SHALL DELIVER YOU – וְּהִצלְּתִי אֶֶּּתְּכֶּם – ‘uhitsaltiy eth’ḵem’ – I shall deliver you (from your enslavement)… נֶָּצֶּל – natsal – Strong’s H5337 – ‘to strip, plunder, deliver oneself, be delivered, snatch away, deliver, recover,: Psa_70:5 But I am poor and needy; Hasten to me, O Elohim! You are my help and my deliverer; O יהוה, do not delay.
  • AND I SHALL REDEEM YOU – וְּגָאלְּתִֶּי אֶֶּּתְּכֶּם – ‘uga’altiy eth’ḵem’ – and shall redeem you with an outstretched arm, and with great judgments – גָאל ga’al – Strong’s H1350 – ‘to redeem, act as kinsman, avenge, buy back, claim, redeemer, avenger of blood, rescue’. Isa_60:16  “And you shall drink dry the milk of the gentiles, and shall milk the breast of sovereigns. And you shall know that I, יהוה, your Saviour and your Redeemer, am the Elohim of Yaʽaqoḇ.

Isa_63:16  For You are our Father, though Aḇraham does not know us, and Yisra’ĕl does not recognise us. You, O יהוה, are our Father, our Redeemer – Your Name is from of old.

  • AND I SHALL TAKE YOU – וְּלָקַׁחְּתִי אֶֶּּתְּכֶּם – ‘ulaqahtiy eth’ḵem’ – לָקח – laqaḥ – Strong’s H3947 and carries the meaning, ‘take, fetch, lay hold of, seize, snatch away, take away, lead’. 1Th 4:16  Because the Master Himself shall come down from heaven with a shout, with the voice of a chief messenger, and with the trumpet of Elohim, and the dead in Messiah shall rise first.

1Th 4:17  Then we, the living who are left over, shall be caught away together with them in the   clouds to meet the Master in the air – and so we shall always be with the Master.

1Th 4:18  So, then, encourage one another with these words.

  • AND I SHALL BE YOUR ELOHIM – וְּהָיִיתִי לֶָּכֶּם לֵֶּאלֹהִים ‘uhayiytiy laḵem loelohiym’ – הָיָה hayah – Strong’s H1961 which means, ‘be, come to pass, come about, appear, be in existence, to come into being, arise’: Exo 3:14 And Elohim said to Mosheh, “I am that which I am.”1 And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Yisra’ĕl, ‘I am has sent me to you.’Footnote: 1The Heḇrew text reads: ’eyeh ’asher ’eyeh, the word ’eyeh being derived from hayah which means to be, to exist, but the Aramaic text here in v. 14 reads: ayah ashar ayah.
  • AND YOU SHALL KNOW THAT I AM יהוה YOUR ELOHIM WHO IS BRINGING YOU OUT: וִידַעְתֶם כִי אֲנִי יהוה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם הַמּוֹצִיא אֶתְכֶם – ‘viyḏ’atem ḵi ani יהוה Eloheyḵem hamotsiya eth’ḵem’ יָצָא – yatsa – Strong’s H3318 which means, ‘to go or come out’: Rev_18:4  And I heard another voice from the heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues.
  • AND I SHALL BRING YOU INTO – וְּהֵבֵאתִי אֶֶּּתְּכֶּם – ‘uheyḇeyathiy eth’ḵem’בוֹא – bo – Strong’s H935 which means, ‘to come in, go in, bring in, enter, to cause to come in, to bring near’. Gen 2:22  And the rib which יהוה Elohim had taken from the man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.

Verse 9 – What did “They” do? They did not listen! Mat_11:15  “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!

Mat_13:9  “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

Mat_13:43  “Then the righteous1 shall shine forth as the sun in the reign of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!

Why? Shortness of spirit(ruach).  Matthew 13:22 “And that sown among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the worry of this age and the deceit of riches choke the word, and it becomes fruitless.”

Choke = lack of breath(spirit).

Verses 10-13 – Once again Moshe is told what to do and finds more excuses.

Verses 14-22 – There are only three tribes here. Where are the other 9. What is He trying to tell us with these three tribes?

Re’uḇĕn – רְּאוּבֵן – Strong’s H7205 – ‘behold a son

(The Third Sabbath of Counting Seven Sabbaths

The Twenty-First Day of Counting the Omer)

Verse 1 – Please remember how I said certain verses were linked to one another because of the verbs used in the verses. Let’s look at Verse 1 and see how it may be linked to another verse in its sequence: “Now see what I do to Pharaoh,”

“See” used here is once again ra’ah – H7200 – ראה – râ’âh – BDB Definition: 1) to see, look at, inspect, perceive, consider. Quickly jump down to verse 3 so that we can tie the two together: And I appeared to Aḇraham,”

See how YHVH starts the 10 Words: Exo 20:2 “I am יהוה your Elohim, who brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim, out of the house of slavery. Remember, this is YHVH’s bona fide statement.

And he built there an altar to יהוה , and called on the Name of יהוה .

This not useless verbiage that makes for longer reading, it is proof, our proof not only of His existence but also that we are keeping His covenant, Torah

Verse 4 – In languages other than English there are ways of expressing an action in such a way that we know that it took place in the past, it is taking place now and will take place in the future. Case in point – trabaja in Spanish means to work. But change it to – trabajaba – it nows means I worked in the past, I worked yesterday, I am working today and will work in the future. It shows that work is continual Many of the Latin based languages have this ability to communicate this type of action.

Exo 6:5 “And I have also heard (H853) the groaning of the children of Yisra’ěl whom(H853) the Mitsrites are enslaving, and I have (been mindful) remembered (H853) My covenant.

The word “remembered”  in English makes it sound as though YHVH is forgetful and forgets His covenant or His people but this is not the case, that is why I prefer the word “mindful”. He was mindful of His covenant when He initiated it, He is mindful of it now and He will be mindful of it forever in the future. Gen_9:16 “And the rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I shall see it, to remember the everlasting covenant between Elohim and every living being of all flesh that is on the earth.”

Exo_31:16 ‘And the children of Yisra’ěl shall guard the Sabbath, to perform the Sabbath throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant.

Lev_24:8 “On every Sabbath he is to arrange it before יהוה continually, from the children of Yisra’ěl – an everlasting covenant.

  • AND I SHALL BE YOUR ELOHIM וְּהָיִיתִי לֶָּכֶּם לֵֶּאלֹהִים ‘uhayiytiy laḵem loelohiym’ – הָיָה hayah – Strong’s H1961 which means, ‘be, come to pass, come about, appear, be in existence, to come into being, arise’: Exo 3:14 And Elohim said to Mosheh, “I am that which I am.”1 And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Yisra’ĕl, ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ” Footnote: 1The Heḇrew text reads: ’eyeh ’asher ’eyeh, the word ’eyeh being derived from hayah which means to be, to exist, but the Aramaic text here in v.

Choke = lack of breath(spirit).
