Shemoth (Exodus) 4 — “What if they don’t believe me?” ((Sound familiar?))

Verse 1 – Verse 1 requires us to go back to Chapter 3 and look at the excuses of Chapter 3. If nothing else Mosheh had a quick mind to think up excuses, but then, don’t we all? Excuse number 1 was “Who am I?” Excuse number 2 was “What shall I say”? Now, excuse number 3, “And if they do not believe me, nor listen to my voice,”

Haven’t we all said pretty much the same thing when it comes to our families? I know I have. In fact, it is depressing when it comes to thinking about spending time with my family. Look at it this way, if I watch a really great movie I want to tell people that I know and care about about the movie and how it made a difference in my life. Now I have found something that makes a difference in my eternal life and my family doesn’t want to hear about it. Most of us can now understand the problem Mosheh had. He had just received a “revelation” for YHVH and was even given His Name and he “knows” that his kinsmen will not believe him. Moshe also says, ‘יהוה has not appeared to you.’ ”

I wish they would said YHVH has not spoken to you, it would at least prove to me that they are hearing me. All I ever hear is “What difference does it make?” If nothing else, verse 1 establishes the desperation that we sometimes have in common with Mosheh.

Verse 2-3 – I apologize, but when I read this verse I thought, “Throw it on the ground? How about I beat them with it? I’ll need it to get their attention.

The following quote is taken for the British Museum of Egyptology:

“The uraeus is a rearing cobra with a flared hood. A symbol of protection, it guarded the gates of the underworld, warded off the enemies of the royal family and guided the dead pharaohs on their journey through the underworld.”

There are at least two types of cobras, hooded and non-hooded. I have been within 2 feet of each. It is not something I want to repeat. When it says that Mosheh fled I can sympathize. When it comes to cobras discretion is the better part of valor.

The word used for sepent is H5175 – נחשׁ – nâchâsh – BDB Definition: 1) serpent, snake

And, the word for rod is: H4294 – מטּה / מטּה – maṭṭeh / maṭṭâh – BDB Definition: 1) staff, branch, tribe 1a) staff, rod, shaft 1b) branch (of vine)

Psa 105:16  And He called for a scarcity of food in the land; He cut off all the supply of bread.

Psa 110:2  יהוה sends Your mighty sceptre out of Tsiyon. Rule in the midst of Your enemies!

Rev 19:15  And out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations. And He shall shepherd them with a rod of iron. And He treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Ěl Shaddai.

Envision this: when you throw the Rod of YHVH on the ground it is dangerous.

Psa 50:16  But to the wrong Elohim said, “What right have you to recite My laws, Or take My covenant in your mouth,

Psa 50:17  “While you hated instruction And cast My Words behind you?

H7993 – שׁלך – shâlak – BDB Definition: 1) to throw, cast, hurl, fling

Yes, “shalak” is used in Shemoth 4:3 and Tehillim 50:17. Yeshua is the Rod of YHVH. I know, the modern world believes Jesus is love but, was it love that drove the moneychangers out of the Temple of YHVH? Yes, it was the love of His Father.

Verse 4 – Restoration. Mosheh reached out and grabbed the serpent by the tail and it became a rod once again: Psa 23:4  When I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil. For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

When we grab hold of Torah it protects us from the serpent, Hasatan and, comforts us in our walk with our Creator: Luk 10:19  “See, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and none at all shall hurt you.

Verse 5 – This verse makes it plain that YHVH is not giving these signs to Mosheh to impress Pharaoh but for the disbelieving Children of Yisra’el.

Verses 6-7 – Here is another very beautiful foreshadowing. Yeshua, the Right Hand of Elohim, came the first time to take the sin of the world upon Himself, leprosy represents that sin. (Torah of Leprosy) When He comes again He will come without sin and establish the Rule (Kingdom) of YHVH forever. Remember, this sign was not shown to Pharaoh. This too is a foreshadowing of Restoration.

Verses 8-9 – This sign becomes the first plague over the land of Egypt. The first miracle recorded in Scripture that Yeshua accomplished was turning water into wine, wine is a substitute for blood. (John 2:1-10) Also, water and blood were a visible sign of Yeshua’s death: Joh 19:34  But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and instantly blood and water came out.

Verse 10-11 – Excuse number 4. Oh, YHVH I am not eloquent. I don’t sound like Joel Osteen, Kenneth Copeland or Billy Graham or… Stop and think about what Yeshua was saying when He said: Joh 5:43  “I have come in My Father’s Name and you do not receive Me, if another comes in his own name, him you would receive.

They believe Joel Osteen, Kenneth Copeland and Billy Graham because that is who they are selling, ugh, teaching. But, we don’t teach Jesus’ name but rather His Father’s Name because He is the embodiment of His Father’s Name: H3091 – יהושׁע / יהושׁוּע – yehôshûa‛ – BDB Definition: Joshua or Jehoshua = “Jehovah is salvation”. HalleluYah!!!

His mother would have called Him YE-shua: H3444 – ישׁוּעה – yeshû‛âh – BDB Definition: 1) salvation, deliverance. Actually the word means Yah’s salvation, this is a weak translation. Shuah, in and of itself, means salvation.

I understand what Mosheh might have been thinking. It has been 40 years since I held a conversation in Egyptian. I may know some of the words but will I use them correctly? How much has English changed in the last 40 years? Where did bits, bytes, blogs come for? How do you Google something? How do I express that in Egyptian? For all I know Google might mean “just shoot me” in modern Egyptian. But what did Yeshua say: Mat 10:19  “But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it shall be given to you in that hour what you shall speak,

Mat 10:20  for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking in you.

Do I fear what people think about me when I speak about YHVH and His Love? NO! I am afraid of speaking these same words to my own family? Yes! It is like tip-toeing through a mine field, never sure of what I should and should not say. Is Mosheh’s excuses so different for ours? Jeremiah used the same excuse: Jer 1:6  And said I, “Ah, Master יהוה! See, I do not know how to speak, for I am a youth.”

Jer 1:7  And יהוה said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’ but go to all to whom I send you, and speak whatever I command you.

Jer 1:8  “Do not fear their faces, for I am with you to deliver you,” declares יהוה.

Jer 1:9  Then יהוה put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and יהוה said to me, “See, I have put My words in your mouth. AMEN!

Verse 12 – I used to teach the young people in my Sunday school class that the first two letters of God are GO and the first three letters of Satan are Sat. So, if you are GO-ing you know who you are serving and if you are Sat-ing you can see who you are serving. This Scripture was the basis for this teaching because we can see YHVH reaching a point where He is tired of our excuses: Joh 14:26  “But the Helper, the Set-apart Spirit, whom the Father shall send in My Name, He shall teach you all, and remind you of all that I said to you.

Verse 13 – Excuse number 5. Send whom You would send, just make it someone else, is what Mosheh is really saying.

Verse 14-16 – Stop and let’s recap the situation: Mosheh sees a burning bush that is not consumed by the fire; He takes off his sandals because he is on set-apart ground; He hears the voice of YHVH; YHVH gives him His name as proof of the encounter; YHVH gives him 3 signs to prove that Mosheh is coming in His Name and now we see that YHVH is angry with Mosheh. Go figure. But then, how many excuses do I make in my life? At what point have I grieved Him? Isa_6:8  And I heard the voice of יהוה, saying, “Whom do I send, and who would go for Us?” And I said, “Here am I! Send me.”

Did you notice that YHVH bestows a title upon Aharon? Did you notice the title He bestows on Mosheh? Mosheh is being called a Mighty One or, a person of authority. People of authority use a spokesperson in many cases. Even today, the presidents have a spokesperson to give briefings rather than using their time to do so. But doing it this way makes Aharon second in command to the sovereignty or authority of Mosheh, something he forgets later on.

Verse 17 – Mosheh is told to take the rod. This will be his symbol of authority.

Verse 18 – Mosheh goes back to his father-in-law’s house and explains what has happened. Re’uel tells him: “go in peace” – לךְ לְשָלוֹם – ‘lecha l’shalom’ – ‘lecha comes for halak: H1980 – הלך – hâlak – BDB Definition: 1) to go, walk, come

Exo 4:2  And יהוה said to him, “What is that in your hand?” And he said, “A rod.”

We are right back at the beginning!!

Verse 19 – Mosheh is told to return to Mitsrayim because all those who wanted him dead were dead.

Verse 20 – Notice anything?

Verses 21-26 – It is impossible to separate these verses from one another because they are intricately tied to one another. Here is my attempt at explaining them.

YHVH reminds Mosheh that Pharaoh’s heart will be hardened against YHVH. Then He tells Mosheh to tell Pharaoh that Yisra’el is His First Born. This is the key to understanding what is about to happen.

Next, we see that YHVH tells Mosheh to instruct Pharaoh that if he does not let His First born go so that he can serve YHVH then YHVH will kill Pharaoh’s first born.

Now, we see that YHVH’s Messenger (Yeshua) is coming to kill Mosheh? Why? Because he has not kept the covenant? So, was the Messenger coming to kill Mosheh or Mosheh’s first born? What happens next is very important and we must look at it in Hebrew to fully understand what is being said: Exo 4:25  And Tsipporah took a sharp stone and cut off the foreskin of her son and threw it at Mosheh’s feet, and said, “You are indeed a bridegroom(hotena) of blood to me!”

H2860 – חתן – châthân – son-in-law, daughter’s husband, a circumcised child or circumciser!

Notice that she says this after she has circumcised her own first born son. The fact that Tsipporah knew this tells me that her father, Re’uel was a high priest of YHVH and knew the sign of the covenant.

Gen 25:1  And Abraham took another wife, whose name was Qeturah.

Gen 25:2  And she bore him Zimran, and Yoqshan, and Meḏan, and Midyan, and Yishbaq, and Shuwah.

Gen_25:4  And the sons of Miḏyan were Ěphah, and Ěpher, and Ḥanoḵ, and Aḇiḏa, and Eldaʽah. All these were the children of Qeturah.

Tsipporah knew that Mosheh. and also Re’uel. had not circumcised the boy and did so with a piece of flint or obsidian and threw it at the feet of Mosheh as a challenge, as she is literally saying to Mosheh, “You almost let my first born son get killed.”

YHVH’s First Born is the True Bridegroom of Blood for us!

Now, remember, Tsipporah means “bird”. The “bird” came down on Mosheh and immersed him in blood to equip him to go to Mitsrayim to fetch the Bride of YHVH. This is a foreshadowing of the coming Messiah but also the coming judgment (Pesach).

Verses 27-31 – Aharon arrives and Mosheh relates what has happened and been said. Now mosheh returns to Mitsrayim and answers the question that was raised in Chapter 2: Exo 2:14  And he said, “Who made you a head and a judge over us?

Who did? YHVH did!
