Bereshith (Genesis) 7 — “Come into the Ark” or “Walking on the Water”

Lesson date: 12/03/5854AA

Verse 1 –  “Come into the ark.” Doesn’t this sound like an invitation? That is because it was. It also has the tone that YHVH was in the ark waiting for Noah and his family to join YHVH. The word for “come” is: H935 – בּוא – bô’ – BDB Definition: 1) to go in, enter, come, go, come in 1a) (Qal) 1a1) to enter, come in 1a2) to come.

But this is not all. My favorite meaning for this word is “to be brought in” like a bridegroom would carry his bride across the threshold. In Ber. 6:4 it is used to show that the Sons of Elohim had sexual relations with the daughters of men: when the sons of Elohim came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. As I look at Bereshith 7:1 I see YHVH inviting His people to the wedding feast of the Lamb.

Rev 22:17  And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And he who hears, let him say, “Come!” And he who thirsts, come! And he who desires it, take the water of life without paying!

The word for “come” in Greek used Ber. 7:1 is: G1525 – εἰσέρχομαι – eiserchomai – ice-er’-khom-ahee – From G1519 and G2064; to enter (literally or figuratively): – X arise, come (in, into), enter in (-to), go in (through).

The word used for “Come” in Hazon 22:17 is G2064 without the prefix G1519

Did you ask yourself why He extended this invitation to just 8 people? “because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation.”

Isa_42:21  It has delighted יהוה, for the sake of His righteousness, to make the Torah great and esteemed.

Isa_51:7  “Listen to Me, you who know righteousness, a people in whose heart is My Torah: do not fear the reproach of men, nor be afraid of their revilings.

Eze 18:9  if he walks in My laws, and he has guarded My right-rulings in truth – he is righteous, he shall certainly live!” declares the Master יהוה.

Verse 2 – 4  – “Of all the clean beasts take with you seven pairs.” How would Noah know what was clean and unclean if he did not know Torah?

Why was Noah warned that the rain would begin after 7 days? I believe that this warning is tied to Methushelah and the meaning of his name, which as we discussed, means “his death shall bring”. We have read that Hanok was told that the flood would not come until after his son’s, Methushelah, death. Please look at the calendar plates below to see how I have outlined the flood (death) plan.

Stop and think about it: if Noah was unclean because he had to bury his grandfather Methushelah he missed celebrating Passover in the month of Abib but he could still celebrate Passover in the second month and do so after mourning the death of his grandfather.

Num 9:10  “Speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl, saying, ‘When any male of you or your generations is unclean for a being, or is far away on a journey, he shall still perform the Passover of יהוה.

Num 9:11  ‘On the fourteenth day of the second month, between the evenings, they perform it – with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they eat it.

What I have attempted to demonstrate below with the calendar pages is how the celebration of Passover was foreshadowed by the events of the flood.

Next we see a very familiar number being given to Noah, “forty days and forty nights.”  Why do we see this number so often? Forty represents the period of time for testing/trial and/or transition to take place.

Exo 24:18  And Mosheh went into the midst of the cloud and went up into the mountain. And it came to be that Mosheh was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

Num 13:25  And they returned from spying out the land after forty days.

Num 14:34  ‘According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days – a day for a year, a day for a year – you are to bear your crookednesses forty years, and you shall know My breaking off.

Mat 4:1  Then יהושע was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tried by the devil.

Mat 4:2  And after having fasted forty days and forty nights, He was hungry.

Act 1:3  to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them for forty days, speaking concerning the reign of Elohim.

Verse 5 – Notice the great testimony spoken of Noah in this verse. He did all the YHVH had commanded him to do, the same that He asks of us, nothing more, nothing less.

Verses 6 – 15 Recounts who the occupants of the ark were.

Verse 16 – This is a beautiful verse: “and יהוה shut him in.”

The word for shut is: H5462 – סָגַר – sâgar – saw-gar’ – A primitive root; to shut up; figuratively to surrender: – close up, deliver (up), give over (up), inclose, X pure, repair, shut (in, self, out, up, up together), stop, X straitly.

Isa 22:22  ‘And I shall place the key of the house of Dawid on his shoulder. And he shall open, and no one shuts; and shall shut, and no one opens.

Same word or rather, Word.

Verse 17 – There is more than one way of reading this. I take it to mean that it took the flood waters 40 days to reach a height sufficient enough to actually begin lifting the ark from the earth and continued to increase.

Verse 18 – ((Big Wow for me))  I want to concentrate on one word in this verse – moved. H1980 הָלַךְhâlak – haw-lak’ – Akin to H3212; a primitive root; to walk (in a great variety of applications,. This word carries with it the implication that it is walking “in the way”.

Deu 5:33  “Walk in all the way which יהוה your Elohim has commanded you, so that you live and it be well with you. And you shall prolong your days in the land which you possess.

Jdg_2:22  in order to try Yisra’ĕl by them, whether they would guard the way of יהוה, to walk in them as their fathers guarded them, or not.”

Psa_119:1  Blessed are the perfect in the way, Who walk in the Torah of יהוה!

Isa_35:8  And there shall be a highway, and a way, and it shall be called “The Way of Set-apartness.” The unclean does not pass over it, but it is for those who walk the way, and no fools wander on it.

Jer_6:16  Thus said יהוה, “Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; and find rest for yourselves. But they said, ‘We do not walk in it.’

Jer_42:3  “And let יהוה your Elohim show us the way in which we should walk and the word we should do.”

This proves that the ark just didn’t bop up and down in a random manner but “moved” in the way of Elohim and we will talk more about that in Chapter 8.

If we stop here this is a pretty big discovery for me but let’s look a little further in to what may be alluded to here: Mat 14:26  And when the taught ones saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a phantom!” And from fear they cried.

Mat 14:27  But immediately יהושע spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid.”

Mar 6:48  And seeing them straining at rowing – for the wind was against them – at about the fourth watch of the night, He came to them walking on the sea, and He wished to pass them by.

Mar 6:49  And when they saw Him walking on the sea, they thought it was a phantom, and cried out,

Mar 6:50  for they all saw Him and were troubled. And immediately He spoke to them and said to them, “Take courage, it is I. Do not be afraid.”

Deja vu at this Point: I deliberately waited until this point to introduce a couple of things I think are relevant to this topic. First: The word for “Come into” in verse 1 – BO – H935 – בּוֹא – bô’  ((refer back to the meaning in verse 1))

b         = tent, house

a         = strong leader, strength, El, ((Abbreviation for Elohim))

Enter the House of Elohim.

Where do we find the House (Beyt) of Elohim (El)? Gen 28:12  And he dreamed and saw a ladder set up on the earth, and its top reached to the heavens, and saw messengers of Elohim going up and coming down on it.

Gen 28:13  And see, יהוה stood above it and said, “I am יהוה Elohim of Abraham your father and the Elohim of Yitsḥaq. The land on which you are lying, I give it to you and your seed.

Gen 28:14  “And your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and you shall break forth to the west and to the east, to the north and the south. And all the clans of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your seed.

Gen 28:15  “And see, I am with you and shall guard you wherever you go, and shall bring you back to this land. For I am not going to leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.”

Gen 28:16  And Yaʽaqob awoke from his sleep and said, “Truly, יהוה is in this place, and I did not know it.”

Gen 28:17  And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of Elohim, and this is the gate of the heavens!”

Now compare the above with the words of our Messiah: Joh 1:51  And He said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, from now on you shall see the heaven opened, and the messengers of Elohim ascending and descending upon the Son of Aḏam.”

Why would Yeshua say this? Because He is the Son of Elohim, which is Elohim’s House.

Verses 19-20 – We see that the mountains, including the Himalayas were covered by at least 25 feet of water. Now remember, there was not as much water on the Earth before the flood so the mountains were actually taller because sea level was much lower. The 2 to 7 mile thick layer of water in the upper atmosphere fell to the Earth as rain and the fountains of the deep broke open and that water came up from beneath the mantle of the Earth, which today, scientist tell us contains more water than what is above the mantle.

Verses 21-24 – All flesh died, except those in the ark. And the water remained at flood stage 150 days.

Ahavah,

Verse 1 – “Come”. This is a very significant word for me. It sounds like an invitation and it shows that YHVH was already in the ark. Here is another notable thing: Noah and his sons completed building the ark and did not presume they belonged there.

Come = H935 – בּוא – bô’ – BDB Definition: 1) to go in, enter, come, go, come in 1a) (Qal) 1a1) to enter, come in 1a2) to come. Bo can be used in many ways but I stopped with the (Qal) active tense because that is the tense being in this verse. If you go back to Bere. 6:4 where it says “the sons of Elohim came into the daughters of men” this is the same verb being used for sexual relations.

Let’s look at the same verb in the Septuagint to get a hint of something more:  G1525 – εἰσέρχομαι – eiserchomai – ice-er’-khom-ahee – From G1519 and G2064; to enter (literally or figuratively): – X arise, come (in, into), enter in (-to), go in (through).

Eiserchomai is a compound word from G1519 and G2064: G1519 – eis – ice – is a preposition, i.e. to or into that can be used to form an adverbial phrase. G2064 – ἔρχομαι – erchomai – er’-khom-ahee – to come.

Look where this word can be found: Rev 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And he who hears, let him say, “Come!” And he who thirsts, come! And he who desires it, take the water of life without paying!

Do you notice the exclamation point after the word Come? It is a command and an invitation. Now, upon what was the invitation to Noah based? “because I have seen that you are righteous before Me.” What did Noah do that made him righteous in the eyes of YHVH? Rev 22:14 “Blessed are those doing His commands, so that the authority shall be theirs unto the tree of life, and to enter through the gates into the city.

Gen 6:22 And Noaḥ did according to all that Elohim commanded him, so he did.

Now, I know that this may sound silly but look at Noah’s qualification to be chosen: Gen 6:8 But Noaḥ found favour in the eyes of יהוה. ((Favour is H2580 – chen –  khane – favour, grace.))

Let’s look at this. Let’s say Noah was a deacon at the Babylonian First Baptist Church, on the corner of Main and Central and said, “God, I want to make the ark 10 cubits longer and 6 cubits higher and I want more windows and I want to paint it sky blue.”

God is vexed with Noah and says, “Noah, that is not what I commanded you to do. Do as I command you.”

Noah responds, “I know Lord but, I have grace and I don’t have to keep all the commands and you are saved by grace, not works, you know.”

So, YHVH lets Noah build the ark his way and as the wind and waves grow more tumultuous the ark is now too top heavy and it flips over and everyone dies. The End!

Why did I use this illustration? Because this is what YHVH’s Word has been reduced to. Noah would have been saying this to YHVH: Mat_7:22 “Many shall say to Me in that day, ‘Master, Master, have we not prophesied in Your Name, and cast out demons in Your Name, and done many mighty works in Your Name?’

Grace or favour is our invitation from YHVH to go in and join Him. Go back and re-read Rev. 22:14 above. Look at those who said they had done “mighty works”. What is their fate? Mat 7:23 “And then I shall declare to them, ‘I never knew you, depart from Me, you who work lawlessness!’

Lawlessness or iniquity = G458 – ἀνομία –  anomia –  an-om-ee’-ah – From G459; illegality, that is, violation of law or (generally) wickedness: – iniquity, X transgress (-ion of) the law, unrighteousness.

Look at that definition. A violation of the law, a transgression of the law = unrighteousness. G458 and G459 (anomos) come from G3351 with the addition of G1 which is the “negative” article. G3551 – νόμος – nomos-  nom’-os – From a primary word νέμω nemō (to parcel out, especially food or grazing to animals); law (through the idea of prescriptive usage), generally (regulation), specifically (of Moses [including the volume]; also of the Gospel), or figuratively (a principle): – law.

This is why I say iniquity or lawlessness equals Torahlessness: Mat_16:27 “For the Son of Aḏam is going to come in the esteem of His Father with His messengers, and then He shall reward each according to his works.

Act 10:34 And opening his mouth, Kěpha said, “Truly I see that Elohim shows no partiality,

Act 10:35 but in every nation, he who fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him.

1Co 3:11 For no one is able to lay any other foundation except that which is laid, which is יהושע Messiah.

1Co 3:12 And if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw,

1Co 3:13 each one’s work shall be revealed, for the day shall show it up, because it is revealed by fire. And the fire shall prove the work of each one, what sort it is.

1Co 3:14 If anyone’s work remains, which he has built on, he shall receive a reward.

1Co 3:15 If anyone’s work is burned, he shall suffer loss, but he himself shall be saved, but so as through fire.

Yes, my OCD kicked in but, this is the very foundation of our relationship with our Creator, YHVH but if you are not Keeping His Commands but doing your own thing you are proving to Him that you do not love Him. Joh_14:15 “If you love Me, you shall guard My commands.

Which commands did Yeshu’a do away with? None. Mat 5:17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Torah or the Prophets.(e) I did not come to destroy but to complete. Footnote: (e) The Law and the Prophets is a term used for the pre-Messianic Scriptures.

Verse 2-3 – In this verse we see a differentiation between clean and unclean. Seven of each sex of the clean beasts are taken and only 2, one pair, of the unclean. How many dogs were taken? How many Chihuahuas were taken? How many Pomeranians were taken?

H2889 – טהר / טהור – ṭâhôr – BDB Definition: 1) pure, clean 1a) clean (ceremonially – of animals) 1b) pure (physically) 1c) pure, clean (morally, ethically)

What is unclean? Same word with the word “Lo” in front of it: H3808 – לֹה  לוֹא  לֹא – lô’  lô’  lôh – lo, lo, lo lo; a primitive particle; not (the simple or abstract negation); by implication no; often used with other particles: – X before, + or else, ere, + except, ig [-norant], much, less, nay, neither, never, no

Think about it, if YHVH decides what is clean and unclean how can Peter have a dream and undo that?

He can’t… neither would Yeshu’a. Peter’s dream was about “men, mankind”. Act 11:2 And when Kěpha went up to Yerushalayim, those of the circumcision were contending with him,

Act 11:3 saying, “You went in to uncircumcised men and ate with them!” ((Accusation))

Act 11:9 “And the voice answered me again from the heaven, ‘What Elohim has cleansed you do not consider common.’ (Defense)

Act 11:16 “And I remembered the word of the Master, how He said, ‘Yoḥanan indeed immersed in water, but you shall be immersed in the Set-apart Spirit.’

Act 11:17 “So if Elohim gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Master יהושע Messiah, how was I able to withstand Elohim?”

Act 11:18 And having heard this, they were silent, and praised Elohim, saying, “Then Elohim has indeed also given to the nations repentance to life.”

Why did this take place? What were the disciples commanded to do?

Verse 4 – In 7 days. Why? Why for 40 days and 40 nights? Where did all that rain come from?

Verse 5 – Noah did all that YHVH commanded him to do.

Verses 6-9 – I believe that Noah was not the shepherd of the animals but one of His messengers was. Which one?

Verses 10-11 – What is the significance of what we are told in Verse 11? What is meant by: “all the fountains of the great deep were broken up”

Verse 12 – Rained 40 days and nights.

Verses 13-16 – All aboard. And YHVH shut them in, personally.

Verses 17-24 – The length of the flood. Verse 21 could be titled “Mission Accomplished”.

Ahavah vberakhot,
