Bereshith (Genesis) 5 — What is in a Name?

Lesson date: 11/26/5854AA

Verses 1-5 – Man (Adam) was created in the likeness of YHVH. Notice verse 3 that Sheth was in the likeness and image of Adam, not someone else.

Verses 6-31 – The genealogy of the house of Adam:

Adam = man, mankind
Sheth = substituted, compensated, appointed
Enosh = mortal man, incurable (this is used in the connotation of dying for an incurable condition)
Qeynan = sorrow, song of sorrow,
Mahalal’el = blessed or praised + El
*Yered = descent, to come down
**Hanok = dedicated, devoted to instruction/teaching
***Methushelah = “his death shall bring”
Lemek = to be low or depressed
Noah = comfort and rest

Man is appointed mortal sorrow, but the blessed El shall come down teaching. His death shall bring the despairing comfort and rest.

*Adam (130) + Sheth (105) + Enosh (90) + Qeynan (70) + Mahalal’el (65) = 450 years. Believe we may see in Yered’s name the year that the fallen angels came down to Mt. Hermon.

**Hanok prophesied the Second Coming of the Messiah: Jud 1:14  And Ḥanoḵ, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied of these, saying, “See, יהוה comes with His myriads of set-apart ones,

Jud 1:15  to execute judgment on all, to punish all who are wicked among them concerning all their wicked works which they have committed in a wicked way, and concerning all the harsh words which wicked sinners have spoken against Him.”

***Methushelah (187) + Lamek (182) + Noah 600 years to the flood = 969 years

Verse 22 – “Ḥanoḵ walked with Elohim three hundred years”  Hanok’s name would indicate that he was dedicated to the instruction of Elohim for 300 years. Amo 3:3  Would two walk together, without having met?

What are the characteristics of walking with your special someone? First, you feel their presence; Two: you hear their voice and Three: you express your love. There are 1440 minutes in a day. How many of those are spent walking with Elohim?

How do we walk with Elohim? Col 3:1  If, then, you were raised with Messiah, seek the matters which are above, where Messiah is, seated at the right hand of Elohim.

Col 3:2  Mind the matters above, not those on the earth.

Col 3:3  For you have died, and your life has been hidden with Messiah in Elohim.

Col 3:4  When the Messiah, who is our life, is manifested, then you also shall be manifested with Him in esteem.

Col 3:5  Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: whoring, uncleanness, passion, evil desire and greed of gain, which is idolatry.

Col 3:6  Because of these the wrath of Elohim is coming upon the sons of disobedience,

Col 3:7  in which you also once walked when you lived in them.

Col 3:8  But now, also put off all these: displeasure, wrath, evil, blasphemy, filthy talk from your mouth.

Col 3:9  Do not lie to each other, since you have put off the old man with his practices,

Col 3:10  and have put on the new one who is renewed in knowledge according to the likeness of Him who created him,

Col 3:11  where there is not Greek and Yehudite, circumcised and uncircumcised, foreigner, Scythian, slave, free, but Messiah is all, and in all.

Col 3:12  Therefore, as chosen ones of Elohim, set-apart and beloved, put on compassion, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, patience,

Col 3:13  bearing with one another, and forgiving each other if anyone has a complaint against another, indeed, as Messiah forgave you so also should you.

Col 3:14  But above all these put on love, which is a bond of the perfection.

Col 3:15  And let the peace of Elohim rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one Body, and be filled with thanks.

Col 3:16  Let the Word of Messiah dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing with pleasure in your hearts to the Master in psalms and songs of praise and spiritual songs.

Col 3:17  And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the Name of the Master יהושע, giving thanks to Elohim the Father through Him.

“Never go to a feast, full” or Pro 27:7  One satisfied loathes the honeycomb, But to a hungry one any bitter food is sweet.

When we go into the presence of YHVH we want to be hungry for each morsel we receive.
