Bereshith (Genesis) 47 — Realizing how much you don’t know

Verses 1-2 – This is one of those times where I realize how little I know and how inadequate I am to teach. We see Yoseph going to Pharaoh to introduce his family and he takes 5 of his brothers. Which five? We don’t know. Do these five represent the five wise virgins who had plenty of oil(Torah, Ruach Hakodesh, Wisdom?). Were they the ones that would listen to and obey the commands of Yoseph? We are not told who the five brethren were but I have an idea about 2 of them. One was Yehudah, who had so eloquently poured out his heart in repentance to Yoseph. And, one other was Binyamin, so that Yoseph could brag about his only full brother. The one brother to whom he gave five times as much food as his brothers (Gen. 43:34) and to whom he also gave 5 changes of garments(Gen. 45:22).  Did these 5 brothers represent the five wise virgins? Those that had brought sufficient oil with them while waiting for the Bridegroom? I now realize that five is also a foreshadowing of the second coming of the Messiah and will pay more attention to the occurrence of 5 in Scripture. It should also be noted that5 is the number of gifts or responsibilities in the Body of Messiah: Eph 4:11  And He Himself gave some as emissaries, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as shepherds and teachers

Eph 4:12  for the perfecting of the set-apart ones, to the work of service to a building up of the body of the Messiah,

Verses 3-4 – Br’er Rabbit moment. For those of us who are old enough to remember Uncle Remus’ Tales of the South we recognize the “please, Br’er Fox, don’t fling me in dat brier-patch,” moment. Everything stated was true but in so doing the Children of Yisra’el received the best land in Egypt. Let’s look at verse 4 in particular.

In verse 4 we see the brothers of Yoseph use the word dwell twice. What is interesting is the fact that it is two very different words being used. First is: H1481 – גּוּר – gûr – BDB Definition:1) to sojourn, abide, dwell in, dwell with, remain, inhabit, be a stranger, be continuing, surely. It is from this verb that we get the noun “ger” H1616 – גּיר / גּר – gêr / gêyr – BDB Definition:1) sojourner 1a) a temporary inhabitant, a newcomer lacking inherited rights.

C         = gimel = ((a camel’s foot)) to walk, gather, carry

f         = vav = ((a tent peg)) to hook, secure, to add

r         = rosh = ((a head)) top, beginning, first

We walk in the way secured to our Head(Messiah).

The second word dwell is somewhat different: H3427 – ישׁב  – yâshab – BDB Definition:1) to dwell, remain, sit((editor’s note: squat)), abide. In other words that only had squatters’ rights, not an inheritance. It is for this verb that we get the noun “toshab” H8453 – תּשׁב / תּושׁב – tôshâb – BDB Definition:1) sojourner, stranger. Also, “yashab” is where the modern word “yeshiva” comes for and it means “school” or to sit at the foot of a teacher: Act 22:3  “I am indeed a Yehuḏite, having been born in Tarsos of Kilikia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamli’ĕl, having been instructed according to the exactness of the Torah of our fathers, being ardent for Elohim, as you all are today,

I         = yod = ((right arm)) work, make, throw, worship, give thanks.

s         = sheen = ((teeth)) chew, ruminate, meditate, destroy, die.

b         = beyt = ((tent floor plan)) tent, house ((by extension: wife or son)).

By the Right Arm ((of YHVH)) we ruminate(meditate) on His House (Son)

Joh 1:51  And He said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, from now on you shall see the heaven opened, and the messengers of Elohim ascending and descending upon the Son of Aḏam.” ((Beyt El))

Let’s word this a little differently: “We did not come into Egypt to receive an inheritance but rather to receive instruction (Torah).”

Verses 5-6 – Pharaoh acknowledges the fact that Yoseph family came to live with Yoseph, not Pharaoh. He also asks their profession and gives them the responsibility of caring for Pharoah’s livestock, which if you remember was all the livestock he had acquired for his people when they sold their livestock to get food. Pharaoh stipulates that they must be capable men = H2428 – חיל – chayil – BDB Definition: 1) strength, might, efficiency(ability), wealth, army. Pro 31:10  Who does find a capable wife? For she is worth far more than rubies.

Not only do they have access to the finest land in Egypt but they are now the employees of the Pharoah and have access to his livestock.

Verses 7-10 – Spiritually Ya’aqob is the greater authority in the presence of Pharaoh but, he blesses Pharoah: 1Pe 2:17  Respect all, love the brotherhood, fear Elohim, respect the sovereign.

When Ya’aqob is asked how old he is and he replies: “the years of my sojourning”. Sojourning is “magur” which comes for the root word “gur” above. Ya’aqob says that he is 130 years old but acknowledges he will not live as long as Abraham (175) or Yitshaq (180) but to the average Mitsrian who lived to be about 50 he is ancient.

Verses 11-13 – Yoseph “nourished” his father and brothers. The word for nourished H3557 – kul , which is the same word that Yoseph used in Chapter 45 Verse 11 for “provide for”. “Kul” has the meaning of maintain, sustain, to provide sustenance or nourishment: Psa 55:22  Cast your burden on יהוה, And let Him sustain you; He never allows the righteous to be shaken.

Verses 14-21 – This is a prime example of a “benevolent dictatorship” form of government. Yoseph collects all the silver, all the livestock, all the land and even the very lives of the people of Egypt while his family is safe and secure in Goshen. In order to make it easier to administer or care for the people he rounds them up and puts them in the cities. Not only is this a type and shadow of our Messiah but it is a model for what the NWO/UN wants to do with all the citizens of the world with Agenda 2030. The only people allowed outside of a metropolitan area will be ranchers and farmers and they will be severely restricted in their activities.

Verse 22 – The land of the priests was exempt by law. Also, food was provided by Pharaoh. This is a type and shadow of the Levitical priesthood who did not have an inheritance but were provided by the people through their offerings.

Verses 23-24 – Yoseph establishes a tax system. He reminds them he has bought their land, their livestock and the lives of the people. Now, he is going to let them plant the land and give them the seed to so and they get to keep 4/5ths of the produce and give 1/5 to Pharoah in effect making them sharecroppers on their own land.

Verse 25 – And what did the people say about this arrangement: “You have saved our lives”.

Verse 26 – Once again the only exception was the land of the priests.

Verses 27-28 – We see that not only did Yisra’el survive in Goshen but that they were fruitful and increased exceedingly. The Scripture makes it plain that Ya’aqob lived for 17 years in Goshen, the same numbers of years that Yoseph was when he was sold into slavery in Egypt. The number 17 has several meanings: victory, overcoming the enemy or preserve in the midst of adversity. All of these can be applied to Yisra’el’s fortune in Goshen.

One of the first places we see 17 used in Scripture is when the rain started in the 17th day of the second month and Noah and his family were “preserved from the adversity” of the flood inside the Ark. The next time we see it is when the Ark comes to rest on the mountains of Ararat in the 17th day of the 7th month. What is happening here?

In verse 28 we see that Ya’aqob lives to be 147 years old. I tried to determine the meaning of 147 but can find no resource to enlighten me. Being curious, I broke it down to 100+40+7 in Hebrew and came up qoof+mem+tsayin = קמץ – H7061 – qâmats – BDB Definition: 1) (Qal) to grasp, enclose with the hand, take a handful. I looked for Scriptures along this theme and this is what I found.

Job_8:20  See, Ěl does not cast away the perfect, neither hold the hand of evil-doers.

Psa_73:23  Yet I am always with You, You took hold of my right hand.

Psa_139:10  There, too, Your hand would lead me, And Your right hand hold me.

Isa_42:6  “I, יהוה, have called You in righteousness, and I take hold of Your hand and guard You, and give You for a covenant to a people, for a light to the gentiles,

Verse 29 – There is something very unusual happening in this verse. Can anyone tell me what it is? It has to do with this Hebrew phrase:

אִם־נָא מָצָאתִי חֵן בְעֵינֶיךָ – ‘im-na matsa’ati ḥen b’eyneyecha’

or

אִם־נָא מָצָאתִי חֵן בְעֵינֵיכֶם – ‘im-na matsa’ati ḥen b’eyneyechem’

or

אִם־מָצָאתִי חֵן בְעֵינֶיךָ – ‘im matsa’ati ḥen b’eyneyecha’

It is used 12 times in Scripture but it is out of place here.

Also, we see Ya’aqob use the same sign as Abraham for swearing a covenant in Ber. 24:2.

In the South we have a saying, “There’s a fox in the hen house.” Pharaoh just put shepherds in charge of all the livestock and to care for them. Remember what happened with Ya’aqob and Laban? They get to choose from the finest livestock and breed them with their herds and flocks making theirs even better.

I would like to focus on one word in Verse 7 and that is “set”. It does not mean that Yosef had Ya’aqob “sit” before Pharaoh but that Yosef presented Ya’aqob to Pharaoh. You “set” a glass(or any object but not a person) down on a table and then you “sit” in a chair beside the table. It would have been unacceptable or intolerable for Ya’aqob or anyone not of the royal house, to “sit” before Pharaoh. The word used here is H5975עָמַד‛âmad –  aw-mad’ – A primitive root; to stand, in various relations (literally and figuratively, intransitively and transitively): – abide (behind), appoint, arise, cease, confirm, continue, dwell, be employed, endure, establish, leave, make, ordain, be [over], place, (be) present (self), raise up, remain, repair, + serve, set (forth, over, -tle, up), (make to, make to be at a, with-) stand (by, fast, firm, still, up), (be at a) stay (up), tarry.

When Ya’aqob is asked how old he is and he replies: “the years of my sojournings”. Sojournings is “magur” which comes for the root word “gur” above. Ya’aqob says that he is 130 years old but acknowledges he will not live as long as Abraham(175) or Yitshaq(180) but to the average Mitsrian who lived to be about 50 he is ancient.

As famous as King Tut was in Egypt, he was thought to have been a god, and in the world of the 20th Century, he died somewhere between 18 and 19 years old. One of the most famous of the Pharaohs, and the one thought to be the Pharaoh at the time of the Exodus, Ramses II was thought to be very old for he was about 90 or 91 at the time of his death. Do you see how intimidating it must have been for a pharaoh to look upon a shepherd who was older than any pharaoh he had ever heard of?
