Bereshith (Genesis) 43

Lesson date: 5/15/5855AA

Verse 1 – This is probably the end of the first year of the famine or the beginning of the second year. When we get to Chapter 45 we will see it is still only the second year of famine. Also, remember, the word for famine and plenty are similar and the only difference is the Hebrew letter “ayin” or eye. If we take our “eye” of of YHVH then we will only see according to the flesh. But if our eye is on YHVH we will “discern” according to the Spirit, rather than according to the flesh. Ithink that David saw this distinction: Psa 33:18  See, the eye of יהוה is on those fearing Him, On those waiting for His kindness,

Psa 33:19  To deliver their being from death, And to keep them alive during scarcity of food.

Verses 3-9 – The word for “except” is H1115 – “biltiy”, the same word used in Bereshith 3:11 for “should not” eat of the fruit. In other words, “Don’t even think about coming back unless you have your brother.” But notice it is Yehudah that speaks up and reminds his father of this fact. Now notice, as I mentioned in our Torah study of Chapter 37, it is Yehudah that takes responsibility for Binyamin. I believe it is here where we see the dividing of Yisra”el into 10 nations and 2 nations: northern kingdom and southern kingdom come to fruition with Yehudah taking responsibility for Binyamin. In Chapter 42 we see Re’uben offer the lives of his 2 sons in exchange for Binyamin but here we see Yehudah offer his life in exchange for the life of Benyamin.

H6148 – עָרַב – ‛ârab – aw-rab’ – A primitive root; to braid, that is, intermix; technically to traffic (as if by barter); also to give or be security (as a kind of exchange): – engage, (inter-) meddle (with), mingle (self), mortgage. Mortgage is a perfect word from “surety” or guaranty because “mortgage” comes from an old French word “mort” meaning death and an old German word “gage” meaning pledge, a death pledge. While I was still a youngster, probably 12 or 13 I heard it explained this way as to why it was called mortgage “you will die before you pay it off.”

Verses 10-13 – Yehudah informs his father that if they had gone immediately back to Egypt for the second time they would have been back already. Now look at Yisra’el’s response. They are to bring with them offerings of balm, honey, spices (you know, Tony Chacheres), myrrh, nuts and almonds. What kind of famine was this? The word used for best fruit is H2173 – זמרהzimrâh – BDB Definition: 1) choice fruits, choice products or in other words “delicacies” not actual food. These things make the food that much better by being served with them.

In verse 12 Yisra’el instructs them to take double the silver because it was probably just a mistake that their silver had been returned to them. This may sound like a little thing but it is not. Many times I have been given too much change in return and have shocked the people who gave me the change when I pointed out the fact that they gave me too much money. I look at it as a test, will I do right no matter how attractive the mistake looks. I hope and pray that I can always say, “Yes.”

Verse 14 – Here we see Yisra’el put on his big boy panties and man up. The word for “bereaved” is H7921 – שָׁכֹל – shâkôl – shaw-kole’ – A primitive root; properly to miscarry, that is, suffer abortion; by analogy to bereave (literally or figuratively): – bereave (of children),: Isa 49:20  “The sons of your bereavement shall yet say in your ears, ‘The place is too narrow for me, make room for me to live.’

Isa 49:21  “And you shall say in your heart, ‘Who has brought forth these for me, since I am bereaved and barren, an exile, and wandering to and fro? And who reared them? See, I was left alone – from where did these come?’ ”

Isa 49:22  Thus said the Master יהוה, “See, I lift My hand up to the gentiles, and set up My banner for the peoples; and they shall bring your sons in their arms, and your daughters carried on their shoulders;

Isa 49:23  “And sovereigns shall be your foster fathers, and their sovereignesses your nursing mothers. They bow down to you with their faces to the earth, and lick up the dust of your feet. And you shall know that I am יהוה – those who wait for Me shall not be ashamed.” This is a beautiful promise!!!

This is not just a coincidence because Yisra’el is pointing to YHVH as El Shaddai – H7706 which comes for H7703 which means the destroyer, the devastator, in others words he is saying that only YHVH can take his sons from him, much like his grandfather Abraham who was willing to be obedient to YHVH even if it meant killing his own son.

Verse 15 – After making the journey with the delicacies of the land and the silver and Binyamin they now stand before Yosef, the man who has the authority to determine their fate, like Yeshua.

Verses 16-17 – Yosef orders the men brought to his house where they will have a feast, like Sukkot, a feast of rejoicing and thanksgiving.

Verses 18-22 – The sons of Yisra’el are now afraid. Maybe, it is just me, but if I am in a life or death situation the last thing I am worried about is what is going to happen to my donkey. In verse 19 we see that this fear caused them to come “to the man over the house” and “at the door” what had happened the last time.

Who is the “man over the house” of Elohim? Yeshua. Who is standing at the door? Yeshua.

Joh 10:1  “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter through the door into the sheepfold, but climbs up by another way, that one is a thief and a robber.

Joh 10:2  “But he who enters through the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

Joh 10:3  “The doorkeeper opens for him, and the sheep hear his voice. And he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

Joh 10:4  “And when he has brought out his own sheep, he goes before them. And the sheep follow him, because they know his voice.

Joh 10:5  “And they shall by no means follow a stranger, but shall flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.”

Joh 10:6  יהושע used this figure of speech, but they did not know what He had been saying to them.

Joh 10:7  יהושע therefore said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

Verse 23 – “Peace be with you” – Shalom – “Do not be afraid – Lo Iyrah!

Mat 17:6  And when the taught ones heard, they fell on their faces and were much afraid.

Mar_6:50  for they all saw Him and were troubled. And immediately He spoke to them and said to them, “Take courage, it is I. Do not be afraid.”

Luk 2:10  And the messenger said to them, “Do not be afraid, for look, I bring you good news of great joy which shall be to all people.

Joh_6:20  And He said to them, “It is I, do not be afraid.”

Joh_14:27  “Peace I leave with you – My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Eph 2:14  For He is our peace, who has made both one, and having broken down the partition of the barrier,

Many times we see these verses and forget that Yeshua’s disciples were in awe of Him and at times exhibited fear. When we are prostrate before the Judge of Creation we will be afraid. This is when we pray that we will hear another voice say, “Shalom, lo iyrah.”  This will be the voice of our Messiah. We pray that we will not hear, “Depart from me you workers of iniquity for I never knew you.”

“Your Elohim has given you treasure…” Mat_13:52  And He said to them, “Therefore every scholar of Scripture taught in the reign of the heavens is like a householder who brings out of his treasure matters, renewed, and old.”

Mat_19:21  יהושע said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven. And come, follow Me.”

Luk_6:45  “The good man brings forth what is good out of the good treasure of his heart, and the wicked man brings forth what is wicked out of the wicked treasure of his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart his mouth speaks.

Here is another very beautiful picture and we have talked about it many times but not in this context: Exo 20:19  and said to Mosheh, “You speak with us and we hear, but let not Elohim speak with us, lest we die.”

The Children of Yisra’el were afraid to hear YHVH so they amended the ketubah and removed the hearing of YHVH for the covenant. After Yeshua ascended back to His Father the “gift” of hearing YHVH’s Voice was restored: Act 2:8  “And how do we hear, each one in our own language in which we were born?

And he brought Shim’on out to them – Shim’on means hearing – H8095 – שִׁמְעוֹן – shim‛ôn -shim-one’ – From H8085; hearing. Hearing was restored to the Children of Yisra’el.

This is why I say that the miracle on that Shavuot day was not in speaking but in hearing. Yeshua made it possible, through the Ruach Hakodesh, for us to once again hear the Voice of Elohim without a priest, prophet or any kind of intermediary.

Verse 24 – Please follow my ramblings on this: The man over the house brought water to them to wash their feet and he fed their donkeys. Basic hospitality of the day: Gen 24:32  So the man came into the house, while he unloaded the camels and provided straw and fodder for the camels and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him, But it is more than that. They made their confession at the door, and they were given a treasure, which they did not pay for, their hearing was restored and a banquet was prepared for them without their knowledge that it was taking place. They will now be seated at the banquet (Sukkot, wedding feast of the Lamb) with the Ruler, having a gift paid for by the Ruler of the House Himself and enjoy a meal with the Ruler as family of the Ruler( brothers Joh_20:17  יהושע said to her, “Do not hold on to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father. But go to My brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My Elohim and your Elohim.’ ”.

Verse 25 – Present – H4503 – מנחה – minchâh – BDB Definition: 1) gift, tribute, offering, present, oblation, sacrifice, meat offering

Verse 26 – Every knee shall bow: Rom_14:11  For it has been written, “As I live, says יהוה, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to Elohim.”

Php_2:10  that at the Name of יהושע every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,

Isa 45:22  “Turn to Me and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am Ěl, and there is none else.

Isa 45:23  “I have sworn by Myself, a word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, so that to Me every knee shall bow, every tongue swear.

Verses 27-28 – Please notice he asks about his father. Now, look what happens; they bow their heads again and do obeisance. By doing this again they are now including their father in this act of obeisance.

H7812 – שָׁחָה – shâchâh –  shaw-khaw’ – A primitive root; to depress, that is, prostrate . They fell flat on the faces.

Verses 29-30 – Emotions – H7356 – רַחַם – racham – rakh’-am – From H7355; compassion.

Psa 103:13  As a father has compassion for his children, So יהוה has compassion for those who fear Him.

Verse 31 – “Serve the food”. H3899 – לחם – lechem – BDB Definition: 1) bread, food, grain. What was the one thing that his brothers lacked? Bread, grain, the very reason for coming to Egypt.

Mat_26:26  And as they were eating, יהושע took bread, and having blessed, broke and gave it to the taught ones and said, “Take, eat, this is My body.”

Mar_14:22  And as they were eating, יהושע took bread, having blessed, broke it, gave it to them and said, “Take, eat, this is My body.”

Luk_22:19  And taking bread, giving thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you, do this in remembrance of Me.”

Verse 32 – “By themselves” – The Egyptians looked down on shepherds because they were wanderers, lived in tents of animal skins, had the odor of their flocks in their clothes and considered it an abomination to eat with the Hebrews. Joh 15:18  “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.

Verses 33-34 – Yosef seated his brothers according to their order of birth. This amazed his brothers because they had nt revealed to him in what they were born. Is this important?

1Co 15:22  For as all die in Aḏam, so also all shall be made alive in Messiah .

1Co 15:23  And each in his own order: Messiah the first-fruits, then those who are of Messiah at His coming,

Notice, Binyamin’s portion is 5 times greater than his brothers’. The word used for “times” is yadot – H3027 which means hands. If a meal is given by a hand then he received his meal for 5 hands. Now notice, it was Yosef who served his brothers. Imagine Yosef carrying two plates in his hands, twice and then one plate once or, in others word 2 and ½ times. Ring a bell?

Dan 7:25  and it speaks words against the Most High, and it wears out the set-apart ones of the Most High, and it intends to change appointed times and law, and they are given into its hand for a time and times and half a time.

Rev 12:14  And the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, to fly into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent.

We see, in my opinion of the return of our Messiah in Yosef serving Binyamin his meal. I cannot believe it and He showed me clear as a bell how Yoseph served his brother.

Ahavah,
