Bereshith (Genesis) 42

Lesson date: 5/8/5855AA

Verse 1-3 – We do not know whether or not Ya’aqob had a prophetic vision that there was grain in Egypt, which I suspect, or something else occurred but he “saw” H7200 – Ra’ah – that there was grain in Egypt. Why were his sons just staring at each other? Were they afraid of leaving their families?

Amo 8:11  “See, days are coming,” declares the Master יהוה, “that I shall send a hunger in the land, not a hunger for bread, nor a thirst for water, but for hearing the Words of יהוה.

Amo 8:12  “And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east – they shall diligently search, seeking the Word of יהוה, but they shall not find it

Joh 6:53  יהושע therefore said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Aḏam and drink His blood, you possess no life in yourselves.

Joh 6:54  “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood possesses everlasting life, and I shall raise him up in the last day.

Joh 6:55  “For My flesh is truly food, and My blood is truly drink.

Joh 6:56  “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood stays in Me, and I in him.

Once again, here is something really neat about Hebrew: The word for famine is ra’ab – H7458 and the word for plenty or abundance is rab – H7227. What is the difference? The ayin or “eye” which is used to see the difference. Remember when the Children of Yisra’el got to the stop called Qadesh and they called it evil. What YHVH sets apart we cannot call evil.

Isa 5:20  Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

Next, we see the division of the sons as 10 and 2 that will remain with Yisra’el forever more.

Verses 4-8 – The 10 sons go down to Egypt and run into their brother, Yosef. He recognizes them but they do not recognize him, it has been 13 years. (Luke 24:15-16) We see the brothers bowing before Yosef like the dream of 37:7 and 10. I wonder if the brothers remembered this at this time?

In verse 7 it says he spoke to them harshly: ‘harshly’ is קָשֶה qasheh – Strong’s H7186 and means ‘hard, harsh, cruel, obstinate, stiff necked and stubborn’. The Greek word used here in the LXX is σκληρός sklēros – Strong’s G4642, the same word we see used here: Mat 25:24  “And the one who had received the one talent also came and said, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed,

Joh 6:60  Therefore many of His taught ones having heard, said, “This word is hard, who is able to hear it?”

Verses 9-16 – It would have been a natural thing to assume strangers in the land were spies coming to spy out the land during times of adversity. In the Book of Yasher we see that the 10 sons entered into the city by 10 different gates in order to conceal the fact that they came together.

Verse 17 – Why were they in prison 3 days? Did it represent something for Joseph’s past are was it going to foreshadow something in the future?

Mat 16:4  “A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Yonah.” And He left them and went away.

Luk 11:29  And while the crowds were thronging, He began to say, “This generation is wicked. It seeks a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Yonah the prophet.

Luk 11:30  “For as Yonah became a sign to the Ninewites, so also the Son of Aḏam shall be to this generation.

Or maybe it was something else: 1Pe 3:18  Because even Messiah once suffered for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to Elohim, having been put to death indeed in flesh but made alive in the Spirit,

1Pe 3:19  in which also He went and proclaimed unto the spirits in prison,

1Pe 3:20  who were disobedient at one time when the patience of Elohim waited in the days of Noaḥ, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight beings, were saved through water,

or maybe something else altogether: Hos 6:1  ‘Come, and let us turn back to יהוה. For He has torn but He does heal us, He has stricken but He binds us up.

Hos 6:2  ‘After two days He shall revive us, on the third day He shall raise us up, so that we live before Him.

Or maybe something else: 2Ki 20:5  “Return and say to Hizqiyahu the leader of My people, ‘Thus said יהוה, the Elohim of Dawiḏ your father, “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears. See, I am going to heal you. On the third day go up to the House of יהוה.

Est 5:1  And it came to be on the third day that Estĕr put on royal apparel and stood in the inner court of the sovereign’s palace, in front of the sovereign’s house, while the sovereign sat on his royal throne in the royal house, opposite the entrance of the house.

Verses 18-24 –  The brothers now are feeling guilty about what they did to Yosef. They are now confronting their sin. In verse 21 we see the word ‘distress’ is צָרָה tsarah – Strong’s H6869 which means, ‘affliction, anguish, trouble, tightness (as in tightness in the chest when we realize how deep we are into trouble)

We also see that Yosef is using and interpreter instead of speaking directly to them. This is a very wise ploy used by many kings and rulers, famous among them was Kruschev of the USSR. It allows the ruler to hear things not meant for them and it also gives them extra time for the interpreter to make the translation giving an unseen advantage of thinking on something before responding.

Turned himself away – H5437 – סָבַב – sâbab – saw-bab’ – A primitive root; to revolve, walk away.

Yosef turned and walked away and wept out of compassion for the confession that he had just heard.

Heb 4:15  For we do not have a High Priest unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who was tried in all respects as we are, apart from sin.

Heb 4:16  Therefore, let us come boldly to the throne of favour, in order to receive compassion, and find favour for timely help.

Verse 25-28 – He commanded that their silver be put back into their sacks: Isa 55:1  “Oh everyone who thirsts, come to the waters. And you who have no silver, come, buy and eat. Come, buy wine and milk without silver and without price.

Isa 55:2  “Why do you weigh out silver for what is not bread, and your labour for what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to Me, and eat what is good, and let your being delight itself in fatness.

Rev 22:17  And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And he who hears, let him say, “Come!” And he who thirsts, come! And he who desires it, take the water of life without paying!

Remember, silver is symbolic of the price of redemption: Mat_26:15  and said, “What would you give me to deliver Him to you?” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver.

Psa 12:6  The Words of יהוה are clean Words, Silver tried in a furnace of earth, Refined seven times.

‘refined’ is זָקַק zaqaq – refine, purify, distil – Strong’s H2212 – Malachi 3:3 “And He shall sit as a refiner and a cleanser of silver. And He shall cleanse the sons of Lĕwi, and refine them as gold and silver, and they shall belong to יהוה , bringing near an offering in righteousness.”

Verses 29-38 – We see Reuben taking the lead for explaining what has happened. He then offers to give his father his two sons if he fails to bring back Binyamin. Ya’aqob cannot see past his own self pity. He feels as all of this is to punish him. Perhaps it is. Perhaps this is to remind him that he must place all of his faith in YHVH.

2Co 4:17  For this slight momentary pressure, is working for us a far more exceeding and everlasting weight of esteem.

2Co 4:18  We are not looking on what is seen, but on what is not seen. For what is seen passes away, but what is not seen is everlasting.

Ahavah,

Perhaps it is fortuitous that we cover this chapter at this time. It is forecasted by many “experts” that the world will suffer a shortfall of wheat, and other grains, much in the same manner as the world did in Bereshith 40, 41, etc. There are many who say that in 2023 and beyond many millions of people will suffer and die because of the lack of food. Personally, and I have written articles on it on my webpage in years past, that what happened in Mitsrayim in Yoseph’s day will be the blueprint for handling the populations of the world in our day. We do not know the underlying cause for the worldwide shortage of food in Yoseph’s day but we do know the cause for the shortage in our day and it is because YHVH’s people have to turned their hearts away from truly serving YHVH the way He wants them to serve Him and they have rejected His True Word, His Living, breathing, walking talking teaching Torah, Yeshu’a HaMashiach:

Amo 8:11  “See, days are coming,” declares the Master יהוה, “that I shall send a hunger in the land, not a hunger for bread, nor a thirst for water, but for hearing the Words of יהוה.

Amo 8:12  “And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east – they shall diligently search, seeking the Word of יהוה, but they shall not find it

We humans are fickle and capricious. We will say and do anything but accept the Truth of the matter. We will not admit, and therefore repent, of our sins but blame some other cause for our problems. In Vayyiqra Chapter 25 we are told what the outcome would be if we turned from YHVH’s Word and yet, when these things come to pass we blame everyone else but ourselves: 2Ch 7:13 “If I shut up the heavens and there is no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people,

2Ch 7:14 and My people upon whom My Name is called, shall humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their evil ways, then I shall hear from the heavens, and forgive their sin and heal their land.

The fault is not the drug dealers, prostitutes, politicians (same as a prostitute) criminals of all kinds. No!!! It is the fault of those who say they are “believers in God’s Word” but won’t keep it. “Must be climate change. Al Gore was right”. We all know, of a wonderful brother in the Messiah, who is going around North America trying to warn people, who will listen, but no one wants to admit that their rejection of Yah’s Word is the cause.

Will our generation be any different? They will be staring at the blank screens of the I-Phones and Androids, their I-Pads and Kindles wondering, “Oh my, what do we do now? Must be climate change.”

The ayin or “eye” which is used to see the difference. Do you have an “eye” for the times? Do you have an “eye” for the Word? Remember when the Children of Yisra’el got to the stop called Qadesh and they called it evil. What YHVH sets apart we cannot call evil.

Isa 5:20  Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
