Bereshith (Genesis) 40

Lesson date: 4/23/5855AA

Verses 1-4 – The “cup-bearer” and the baker of Pharoah were placed into prison. We are not told what they did wrong but in the eyes of Pharoah they had “sinned against their master”. They were delivered to the captain of the guard and he placed them under the care of Yoseph, who now had authority over them. Instead of using or misusing his authority over them it says “and he served them.”

Mat 23:11  “But the greatest among you shall be your servant.

Mar 10:42  And יהושע, calling them near, said to them, “You know that those who think to rule the gentiles are masters over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.

Mar 10:43  “But it is not so among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant.

Mar 10:44  “And whoever wishes to be first among you, shall be servant of all.

Mar 10:45  “For even the Son of Aḏam did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Luk 22:26  “But not so with you, but let him who is greatest among you be as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves.

Luk 22:27  “For who is greater, the one who sits at the table, or the one who serves? Is it not the one who sits at the table? But I am in your midst as the One who serves.

Verses 5-8 – We see that the cup-bearer and the baker had had dreams but could not interpret them. Also, we know that Yoseph had had many dreams himself and could interpret dreams.

Verses 9-15 – The cup-bearers dream was one that showed he would be restored to his position and Yoseph asks that the cup-bearer remember him when he is restored to his former post.

Luk 23:41  “And we, indeed, rightly so, for we receive the due reward of our deeds, but this One has done no wrong.”

Luk 23:42  And he said to יהושע, “Master, remember me when You come into Your reign.”

Verses 16-19 – The baker’s dream was not as positive as the cup-bearer’s dream and showed that in 3 days the baker would be put to death by beheading and his body placed upon a tree.

Deu 21:22  “And when a man has committed a sin worthy of death, then he shall be put to death and you shall hang him on a tree.

Gal 3:13  Messiah redeemed us from the curse of the Torah, having become a curse for us – for it has been written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs upon a tree.

Verses 20-23 – Verse 20 gives us one of the few times that a birthday celebration is mentioned in Scripture. Although, it turned out well for the cup-bearer it did not turn out well for the baker. Verse 23 is very significant in the fact that the cup-bearer was beholden to Yoseph he soon forgot the vow he had sworn to Yoseph.

Deu 8:11  “Be on guard, lest you forget יהוה your Elohim by not guarding His commands, and His right-rulings, and His laws which I command you today,

Deu 8:12  lest you eat and shall be satisfied, and build lovely houses and shall dwell in them,

Deu 8:13  and your herds and your flocks increase, and your silver and your gold are increased, and all that you have is increased,

Deu 8:14  that your heart then becomes lifted up, and you forget יהוה your Elohim who brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim, from the house of bondage,

Hos 13:4  “But I am יהוה your Elohim since the land of Mitsrayim, and an Elohim besides Me you shall not know, for there is no Saviour besides Me.

Hos 13:5  “I knew you in the wilderness, in the land of drought.

Hos 13:6  “When they were fed they were satisfied. They were satisfied and their heart was exalted, therefore they forgot Me.

Mat 5:33  “Again, you heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to יהוה.’

Ahavah,

Verses 1-4 – The “cup-bearer” and the baker of Pharoah were placed into prison. There is some speculation as to why they were in prison. The cupbearer – mashqeh – H4945 = butler – which comes from – H8248 – which means “to cause to drink”.

It is quite possible that after eating a particular meal the Pharoah became ill and after recovering suspected the baker and cupbearer of trying to kill him in some sort of plot, which may have been just a stomach virus or naturally occurring food poisoning. However, in the eyes of Pharoah they had “sinned against their master”. They were delivered to the captain of the guard and he placed them under the care of  young Yoseph, who now had authority over them.

Notice the construction of Verse 4: Gen 40:4 And the captain of the guard put Yosěph in charge of them, and he served them.

In my view this is passive and does not express what is said. I will remove one word and move one word and expose one word, watch: “The captain of the guard charged  (H853) Yoseph with them, and he served them.” So, I moved the word charge and made it past tense, dropped the word “in”, which made the phrase passive and exposed the word  את – H853. Have any thoughts on this “new” structure?

Instead of using or misusing his authority over them in says “and he served them”.

Mat 23:11  “But the greatest among you shall be your servant.

Does our Master have any history of serving others? H8334 – Sharath – a menial, to serve, wait on.

Joh 13:4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, and having taken a towel, He girded Himself.

Joh 13:5 After that He put water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the taught ones, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.

Joh 13:6 And so He came to Shim‛on Kěpha, and he said to Him, “Master, do You wash my feet?”

Joh 13:7 יהושע answered and said to him, “You do not know what I am doing now, but you shall know after this.”

Mar 10:45  “For even the Son of Adam did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

But I thought Yeshu’a was our High Priest?

Exo_28:35 “And it shall be upon Aharon to attend in, and its sound shall be heard when he goes into the set-apart place before יהוה and when he comes out, so that he does not die.

Notice the use of the same word to show the duties of the High Priest?!

One more thing before we leave Verses 1-4. Look in Verse 1 that the cupbearer and baker sinned against Pharoah. Then, look in Verse 2 and see who went to jail. Notice anything?

Verses 5-8 – We see that the cup-bearer and the baker had had dreams but could not interpret them. Yoseph even comments about them looking sad. Notice too, that Yoseph explains to the men that the interpretation of dreams if of Elohim, not a sorcerer or soothsayer or “spiritual consultant.” He makes it clear that he is just the vessel that is used by Elohim.

In Verses 9-19 Yoseph gives the meaning of the 2 dreams and one is good news and one is evil news. We must understand that this too is the way of the Truth of Scripture. Think back to Mt. ‘Eybal and Mt. Gerizim, Yah’s Word is Good News but if you do not obey His Word there is also bad or evil news in the form of curses. We all want the “Good News” or B’osorot/Besorah but we want to be able to “define ourselves” or “Have it our way” or want our freedom to be creative or original. All our Father wants in exchange for the Good News is our love and obedience.

Verses 20-23 – Verse 20 gives us one of the few times that a birthday celebration is mentioned in Scripture. Although, it turned out well for the cup-bearer it did not turn out so well for the baker.

We are warned many times to remember or pay our oaths: Mat 5:33 “Again, you heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to יהוה.’

Lev 19:12 ‘And do not swear falsely by My Name and so profane the Name of your Elohim. I am יהוה.

Num 30:2 “When a man vows a vow to יהוה, or swears an oath to bind himself by some agreement, he does not break his word, he does according to all that comes out of his mouth.

Deu 23:21 “When you make a vow to יהוה your Elohim, do not delay to pay it, for יהוה your Elohim is certainly requiring it of you, and it shall be sin in you.

Deu 23:22 “But when you abstain from vowing, it is not sin in you.

It is not a sin to vow, it is a sin to not keep the vow. It makes me stop and think, “have I kept all my vows to YHVH?” It scares me when I think that I may have not. Are these the vows of a sailor about to abort a ship in a terrible storm or were they made in my heart, in my prayers?

Ahavah vberakhot,
