Bereshith (Genesis) 39

Lesson date: 4/23/5855AA

Verse 1 – This verse begins by telling us some inside information. Once again we see the word “yarad” used for “to bring down”, which as we discussed can mean physically, spiritually or morally. Not only was Yoseph brought down to Egypt, the center of the “mystery religion” of its day with all of its pagan gods, but he was sold to Potiphar, which means (H6318) “belonging to the sun” an officer of pharoah (H6547) which means “great house”. So, not only was Yoseph taken down into the very center or hub of the mystery religion of his day but he was sold to the “Great House Belonging to the Sun”. ((Sunday perhaps.))

Now, let’s not forget who sold him into slavery, Yishma’elites, descendants of Yishma’el, son of Abraham and Hagar who also had 12 sons but who were outside the promise (Yishaq born of Sarah) and outside the covenant (circumcision). The Yishma’elites represent the Muslim world of today who claim the inheritance but don’t recognize neither the covenant nor the Messiah. In contrast, the modern church recognizes the Messiah, by a different name, but does not recognize the covenant. ((Gal. 3:27-29))

Let’s put it together, the Muslims (Yishma’elite) and the Church (Mitsrayim) represent at least one third of the world population but do not recognize the True Covenant and YHVH’s Torah.

Verse 2-5 – Even though Yoseph had been taken from his family, sold into slavery, YHVH was still “with” Yoseph. With = H854 – את – ‘êth: Remember H853 =  את – ‘êth . Now, compare the two:

H854 =  את

H853 =  את

You see the difference? There is none. By using the sequel to H853 I think YHVH is pointing us to the fact that Yoseph is a type and shadow of the coming Messiah.

How was Potiphar able to recognize that YHVH was with Yoseph? Psa 1:1  Blessed is the man who shall not walk in the counsel of the wrong, And shall not stand in the path of sinners, And shall not sit in the seat of scoffers,

Psa 1:2  But his delight is in the Torah of יהוה, And he meditates in His Torah day and night.

Psa 1:3  For he shall be as a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That yields its fruit in its season, And whose leaf does not wither, And whatever he does prospers.

H6743 – צלח / צלח – tsâlach / tsâlêach – BDB Definition: 1) (Qal) to rush: 2) to advance, prosper, make progress, succeed, be profitable ((Daryl definition: to press through and succeed.))

Yoseph, like his father Yisra’el, prospered no matter how adverse the circumstances. וַיְהִּי יָהוה אָת

This phrase is a tremendous Hebrew word play in action. Va hi YHVH eth. It looks simple. The vav represents “and” and the next three letters form “hayah”. Hayah is very important because it is a component of YHVH’s name which is “hayah asher hayah”

H1961 – היה – hâyâh – BDB Definition: 1) to be, become, come to pass, exist, happen, fall out

Now compare that to YHVH’s Name: H3068 – יהוה – yehôvâh – BDB Definition: Jehovah = “the existing One”

Exo 3:14  And Elohim said to Mosheh, “I am that which I am.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Yisra’ĕl, ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ”

Mat 5:16  “Let your light so shine before men, so that they see your good works and praise your Father who is in the heavens.

The master of the house saw YHVH bless everything that Yoseph did. The word used for saw is: H6213 עשׂה – ‛âśâh – BDB Definition: 1) to do, fashion, accomplish, make. Now, let’s look at the pictographic Hebrew for a clue into the word itself:

o         = eye, to see, watching, knowledge

s         = front teeth, chew, destroy, meditate, ruminate

e         = behold, sigh, praise, reveal

Meditating on the knowledge that has been revealed.

Pro 27:18  He who tends the fig tree eats its fruit; And he who guards his master is esteemed.

2Sa 6:11  And the ark of יהוה remained in the house of Oḇĕḏ-Eḏom the Gittite three months, and יהוה blessed Oḇĕd-Edom and all his house.

2Sa 6:12  And it was reported to Sovereign Dawiḏ, saying, “יהוה has blessed the house of Oḇĕḏ-Eḏom and all that he has, because of the ark of Elohim.” Dawiḏ then went and brought up the ark of Elohim from the house of Oḇĕḏ-Eḏom to the City of Dawiḏ with rejoicing.

Verses 6-9  Verse 6 illustrates that Yoseph was over the managing of the affairs of his master so completely that Potiphar did not even know how much he had except the food in front of him on the table. It also tells us that Yoseph was a very handsome young man.T he Sciptures also say that the Potiphar’s wife became “aware” of Yoseph and wanted him to sleep with her. In all of Yoseph’s temptations he remained faithful to YHVH and in so doing remained faithful to his master.

Verses 10-12 – Verse 10 tells us that Yoseph was tempted by her daily. Pro 5:3  For the lips of a strange woman drip honey, And her mouth is smoother than oil;

Pro 5:4  But in the end she is bitter as wormwood, Sharp as a two-edged sword.

It appears that Potiphar’s wife chose a certain day when she and Yoseph were the only two in the house to once again try to seduce Yoseph but instead of him relenting he ran out of the house so quickly that the wife ended up holding Yoseph’s outer garment. It is almost as though Peter may have had this incident in mind when he wrote: 1Pe 2:11  Beloved ones, I appeal to you as sojourners and pilgrims, to abstain from fleshly lusts which battle against the life,

1Pe 2:12  having your behaviour among the gentiles good so that when they speak against you as evil-doers, let them, by observing your good works, esteem Elohim in a day of visitation.

And Sha’ul says it so well: Gal 5:17  For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh. And these are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you desire to do.

But Mrs. Potiphar used the opportunity to wrongly accuse Yoseph of evil. When we look at the word that is used for garment we see that it is beged = H899 – בּגד – beged – BDB Definition:1) treachery, deceit. Looking at it simply Mrs. Potiphar takes on the garment of treachery and deceit to try and destroy the reputation of Yoseph. It comes for the root word bagad = H898 – בּגד – bâgad – BDB Definition: 1) to act treacherously, deceitfully, deal treacherously

So, even though Yoseph was clothed in righteousness and remained faithful to YHVH’s commands, that righteousness became evil for Mrs. Potiphar: Job 29:14  I put on righteousness, and it robed me; right-ruling was my cloak and turban.

Psa 132:9  Let Your priests put on righteousness, And Your kind ones shout for joy.

Isa 61:10  I greatly rejoice in יהוה, my being exults in my Elohim. For He has put garments of deliverance on me, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

Verses 13- 19 – Now we see Yoseph the subject of false accusations. We are not given background on the situation between Potiphar and his wife. We see in verse 19 that it simply says “that his displeasure burned.” It does not tell us who was the direct object of that displeasure. It may have been that Potiphar knew his wife was a wanton hussy and that she had pulled things like this in the past. It may have been Potiphar was actually displeased with his wife because he realized how much he had been blessed because of Yoseph but that he had to “save face” with his other servants and imprison Yoseph. We don’t know.

Verse 20 – But, like our Master, we see Yoseph suffering for doing good. Mat 5:10  “Blessed are those persecuted for righteousness’ sake, because theirs is the reign of the heavens.

Mat 5:11  “Blessed are you when they reproach and persecute you, and falsely say every wicked word against you, for My sake.

Mat 5:12  “Rejoice and be glad, because your reward in the heavens is great. For in this way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

1Pe 2:20  For what credit is there in enduring a beating when you sin? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure, this finds favour with Elohim.

1Pe 3:17  For it is better, if it is the desire of Elohim, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

Verses 21-23 – Once again we see Yoseph prosper because YHVH was with him.

Ahavah,
