Bereshith (Genesis) 37

Lesson date: 4/9/5855AA

Verse 1 – Once again a chapter referring to Yisra’el begins with the word “Yashab” which means “and he dwelt”. Remember, “yashab” is the root word for “Yeshiva” which is the Hebrew word for school with the implication that you sat at the feet of your teacher: Act 22:3  “I am indeed a Yehuḏite, having been born in Tarsos of Kilikia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamli’ĕl, having been instructed according to the exactness of the Torah of our fathers, being ardent for Elohim, as you all are today,

Another very interesting word, which may seem out of place, is the word for “sojourning” = magur – H4033 – which comes for “gur” – H1481 – which means to be a stranger. But how could they be a stranger in a land that was given to them by the Most High? Remember Bere. 15:16. It was not yet their time to inherit: Psa 119:54  Your laws have been my songs In the place of my sojournings. It is not yet our time to inherit. We are not of this world.

1Pe 2:11  Beloved ones, I appeal to you as sojourners and pilgrims, to abstain from fleshly lusts which battle against the life,

1Pe 2:12  having your behaviour among the gentiles good so that when they speak against you as evil-doers, let them, by observing your good works, esteem Elohim in a day of visitation.

Verse 2 – A curious word is in use here – “toldoth” which we have discussed recently, means genealogy and it seems very out of place because this has little to do with the genealogy of Ya’aqob and more to do with Yoseph. This word is conveying the idea that the genealogy of Ya’aqob begins with the account of Yoseph when he was 17 years old. Notice, Yoseph was in the field with Dan and Naphtali (sons of Bilhah) and Gad and Asher (sons of Zilpah) and he brought back an evil report. The word used for “evil” is dibbah – H1681 which means slander, defamation, whispering, evil report.

This verse makes it appear as though Ypseph made himself look good by slandering his brothers. In other words, he was a tattle tale and no one likes a tattle tale.

1Pe 3:10  For “He who wishes to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit,

1Pe 3:11  let him turn away from evil and do good, let him seek peace and pursue it.

Verse 3 – This is a very important verse and there is one word that gives us a clue as to why it is important – H3801 – כּתּנת / כּתנת – kethôneth / kûttôneth – BDB Definition: 1) tunic, under-garment 1a) a long shirt-like garment usually of linen. Why is this word so important? Gen 3:21  And יהוה Elohim made coats of skin for the man and his wife and dressed them.

This is the first time it is used, however it is used most often to describe one type of garment: Exo 28:39  “And you shall weave the long shirt of fine linen, and shall make the turban of fine linen, and you shall make the girdle of woven work.

Exo 28:40  “And make long shirts for Aharon’s sons. And you shall make girdles for them, and you shall make turbans for them, for esteem and comeliness.

The father (Ya’aqob) chose a son to function as the first born (Yoseph), just as Our Father chose Aharon to be High Priest, even though Levi had two older brothers. The kethoneth would extend for the wrists, passed the knees all the way down to the ankles. Imagine trying to herd sheep with this long robe. So, was the function of Yoseph to be a shepherd or a shepherd of shepherds?

Verse 4 – His brothers hated him. Joh 1:11  He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.

Verses 5-10 – Yoseph is receiving dreams and it causes his brothers to hate him even more. In verse 7 he says “we were binding sheaves”. Yoseph could not have performed this task with his long coat so he would have to have taken it off. Now, equal to his brothers he is functioning as a servant, just like his brothers. Yeshua took off His mantle or coat of authority, given to Him by His Father, to come to Earth to function as a servant, just like His brothers. Php 2:9  Elohim, therefore, has highly exalted Him and given Him the Name which is above every name,

Php 2:10  that at the Name of יהושע every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,

Php 2:11  and every tongue should confess that יהושע Messiah is Master, to the esteem of Elohim the Father.

וכל לָשן נָודא דָמריא הָו יָשוע מָשיחא לָשובחא דָאלהא אָבוהי

The line above in Hebrew script is taken for the Aramaic Peshitta. Yeshua’ Messiah is Master is translated for MarYah “The Master YHVH is Yeshua’ Messiah.” I have highlighted the first letter to draw attention to the fact that it is a dalet. Remember what I told you about a “dalet” phrase in Aramaic. Many translators miss the intensity of the dalet changing the position or meaning of the phrase just like in Matt. 5:17.

Luk 19:14  “But his subjects were hating him, and sent a delegation after him, to say, ‘We do not wish this one to reign over us.’

Joh 1:10  He was in the world, and the world came to be through Him, and the world did not know Him.

Joh 1:11  He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.

Yoseph foresaw that one day he would rule over his brothers, father and mother.

Why “the eleven stars”? Sun = father, Moon = mother(s), 12 stars = sons(signs of the Zodiac), 11= his brothers. Have we seen this before? Rev 12:1  And a great sign was seen in the heaven: a woman clad with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.

Verse 11 – “and his father guarded(H853) the word”. Yes, the word used here for guarded is “shawmar” H8104.

Verses 12-17 – “Please go to Shekem and see if it is well with your brothers”. Ya’aqob sends his son to check on his older brothers to see if everything is okay. Shekem is where Ya’aqob dug a well. Joh 4:5  So He came to a city of Shomeron, called Sheḵem, near the piece of land Yaʽaqoḇ gave to his son Yosĕph.

Joh 4:6  And Yaʽaqob’s fountain was there. So יהושע, being wearied from the journey, was sitting thus at the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.

Yoseph went to Shekem to inspect his brothers if they were doing what they were supposed to do. Yeshua’ went to Shekem and He Himself was inspected by His brethern, lost sheep of the House of Yisra’el, Joh 4:19  The woman said to Him, “Master, I see that You are a prophet. Mat 15:24  And He answering, said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Yisra’ĕl.”

Yoseph went to find his brothers doing their father’s work in Shekem but instead they were at Dothan – H1886 – “two wells”. Dothan was on the King’s Highway which stretched for Cairo to Damascus and was an important hub of activity and pagan worship. Even I the days of Elisha it was still a center of paganism.

Instead of watering their father’s sheep at the well(Torah) that He Himself had dug(into the stone tablets) they went on to two wells to satisfy their own eyes(lusts). 1Ki 18:21  And Ěliyahu came to all the people, and said, “How long would you keep hopping between two opinions? If יהוה is Elohim, follow Him; and if Baʽal, follow him.” But the people answered him not a word.

They were not feeding and watering the sheep but themselves: Eze 34:1  And the word of יהוה came to me, saying,

Eze 34:2  “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Yisra’ĕl, prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus said the Master יהוה to the shepherds, “Woe to the shepherds1 of Yisra’ĕl who have been feeding themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flock? Footnote: 1See Jer. 10:21.

Eze 34:3  “You eat the fat and you put on the wool. You slaughter the fatlings – you do not feed the flock.

Verses 18-20 – Kill the master of dreams: Mat 26:4  and plotted to seize יהושע by trickery and kill Him.

Verses 21-22 – Reuben protected Yoseph by telling his brothers not to shed his blood. He had full intention of coming back and getting Yoseph out of the well later and bringing him back to his father, thereby finding some favor with his father for doing so.

Verses 23-28 – Yoseph was stripped (Matt. 27:27-29) and sold for silver (Matt. 26:15). Verse 24 is interesting that it specifies that there was no water in it. Is this one of the “two wells” of Dothan. One well was empty and the other had living water? Joseph was thrown into the dry hole of modern Christian doctrine. 2Ti 3:5  having a form of reverence but denying its power. And turn away from these!

Verse 25 is also prophetic of the Messiah. After having placed Yeshua’ on the stake/cross and after his death the religious leaders sat down that evening and ate the Pesach meal without any remorse.

Notice in verses 26 and 27 that it is Yehudah who wants to sell him. Mat 26:14  Then one of the twelve, called Yehuḏah from Qerioth, went to the chief priests,

Mat 26:15  and said, “What would you give me to deliver Him to you?” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver.

Verses 29-30 – Reuben returned to the pit. “And I, where am I to go.” Deu 33:6  “Let Re’uḇĕn live, and not die, and let his men be numbered.

Joe 2:13  And tear your heart and not your garments, and turn back to יהוה your Elohim, for He shows favour and is compassionate, patient, and of great kindness, and He shall relent concerning the evil.

Verses 31-36 – Many, many shadows of things past and things to come here. Ya’aqob deceived his father into thinking he was Esaw by putting on a goat skin on his arms. The goat of YHVH made atonement for the sins of Yisra’el on the Day of Atonment. Lev 16:9  “And Aharon shall bring the goat on which the lot for יהוה fell, and shall prepare it as a sin offering.

Rev 7:14  And I said to him, “Master, you know.” And he said to me, “These are those coming out of the great distress, having washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

By extention the word “yashab” is not saying that Ya’aqob just lived in the land of his father but was seated there learning from the Good Shepherd, like Abraham sat under the terebinth trees of Mamre. That is how closely tied sitting is to learning, you recline to eat, but sit to learn.

Another very interesting word, which may seem out of place, is the word for “sojourning” = magur – H4033 – which comes for “gur” – H1481 – which means to be a stranger. וכל לָשן נָודא דָמריא הָו יָשוע מָשיחא לָשובחא דָאלהא אָבוהי <<This is the line of text from above in Hebrew script and taken for the Aramaic Peshitta. The underlined portion reads “de MarYah hu Yeshua” = Yeshua’ Messiah is Master is translated for MarYah. But look at the letter highlighted in GREEN, it is a ‘dalet’. Remember what I told you about a “dalet” phrase in Aramaic. Many translators miss the intensity of the dalet changing the position or meaning of the phrase just like in Matt. 5:17. So, if we apply the ‘dalet’ to the phrase what we end up with is “The Master YHVH is Yeshu’a”.

Luk 19:14  “But his subjects were hating him, and sent a delegation after him, to say, ‘We do not wish this one to reign over us.’

Joh 1:10  He was in the world, and the world came to be through Him, and the world did not know Him.

Joh 4:6  And Yaʽaqob’s fountain was there. So יהושע, being wearied from the journey, was sitting thus at the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.

Yoseph went to Shekem to inspect his brothers((I will call this a journey of inspection)) if they were doing what they were supposed to do.

Can we see that perhaps Joseph’s “journey of inspection” was fulfilled by Yeshu’a when He went to see what the lost sheep of the House of Yisra’el were doing? Can we also say that the Lost Sheep recognized Him as the Prophet sent from YHVH to lead His Sheep?

Yoseph went to find his brothers doing their father’s work in Shekem but instead they were at Dothan – H1886 – “two wells”. Dothan was on the King’s Highway which stretched from Cairo to Damascus and was an important hub of activity and pagan worship. Even in the days of Elisha it was still a center of paganism.

Eze 34:3  “You eat the fat and you put on the wool. You slaughter the fatlings – you do not feed the flock.

Verses 18-20 – Kill the dreamer of dreams – Joseph’s brothers saw him coming from a distance and began to plot against him: Mat 26:4  and plotted to seize יהושע by trickery and kill Him.

Mat 27:31 And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, then put His own garments on Him, and led Him away to be impaled.

The church chose to throw away the Living Word (Torah) into a hole in an attempt to bury it: 2Ti 3:5  having a form of reverence but denying its power. And turn away from these!

Here is the problem with that approach, the Living Word cannot be contained in a pit, it is too powerful to just lie there: Mat 28:2 And see, there was a great earthquake, for a messenger of יהוה came down out of heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it.

Mat 28:3 And his appearance was like lightning, and his garments as white as snow.

Mat 28:4 And the guards trembled for fear of him, and became like dead men.

Mat 28:5 And the messenger responding, said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek יהושע who was impaled.

Mat 28:6 “He is not here, for He was raised, as He said. Come, see the place where the Master lay.

Even if the church tries to put a giant stone on the pit to keep the Word from coming out, it won’t work. Dogmas and traditions fall hard. We are seeing, in our day and time a resurrection of the Living Word (Torah) and it is alive, vital, vibrant and can cut through any chain or cord that binds His Sheep to keep them from following our Good Shepherd.

Verse 25 is also prophetic of the Messiah. After having placed Yeshua’ on the stake/cross and after his death the religious leaders sat down that evening and ate the Pesach meal without any remorse. Look at what the Yismaelites were carrying, spices, balm and myrrh. These are things you would use to anoint a body for burial. Humor me for just a moment: Yoseph – H3130 – ‘he adds or he increases

  • (Son) Menashsheh – H4519 – causing to forget
    • (Son) Makir – H4353 – sold
      • (Son)  Gil’ad – H1568 – rocky region
        • (Sons) Iyzer – H372 – no help
        • (Sons) Heleq – H2507 – portion
        • (Sons) Asri’el – H844 – I shall be prince of El
        • (Sons) Shekem – H7928 – back, shoulder
        • (Sons) Hepher – H2660 – a well, pit
          • (Son) Tselophad – H6765 – first born

So what is so important? Look: He Is Increased (and)  Causing To Forget (how) He Was Sold In (the)  Rocky Region (with) No Help, (while his) Portion (was to be) The Prince Of El (who would) Shoulder (the burden of being raised from the) Pit (as) FIRSTBORN (of the Dead)!

Col_1:18 And He is the Head of the body, the assembly, who is the beginning, the first-born from the dead, that He might become the One who is first in all.

1Co_15:20 But now Messiah has been raised from the dead, and has become the first-fruit of those having fallen asleep.

Eph_4:9 But what does “He went up” mean, except that He also first went down into the lower parts of the earth?

Notice in verses 26 and 27 that it is Yehudah who wants to sell him. Mat 26:14  Then one of the twelve, called Yehuḏah from Qerioth, went to the chief priests,

Mat 26:15  and said, “What would you give me to deliver Him to you?” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver.

Verses 29-30 – Verse 29 gives us the impression that Re’uben had every intention to come back and rescue the boy from the pit, probably out of the hope of ingratiating himself once again with his father. Re’uben returned to the pit and found it empty.

I think we can learn a lesson from Re’uben, “we should never hope for a better opportunity at another time”. If we see lawlessness we should speak up, especially with family. We may or they may never have the opportunity to hear our concerns again.

Verses 31-36 – Many, many shadows of things past and things to come here. Ya’aqob deceived his father into thinking he was Esaw by putting on a goat skin on his arms. The goat of YHVH made atonement for the sins of Yisra’el on the Day of Atonement.

Ahavah vberakhot
