Verse 1 – Geneology = toledoth – H8435 – generations, bring forth

Verses 2-3 – Adah – H5711 – ornament, adorned- was the daughter of Alon – H356 terebinth, mighty – Hittite – H2850 – descendant of Heth, sons of terror. Esau, violated the instructions of his parents and married women of Kena’an after selling his birthright. His first wife was “adorned with the mighty sons of terror”.

Oholibamah – H173 – tent of the high place – daughter of Anah – H6034 – answer:  who was the daughter of Tsibon – H6649 – colored, varigated, diverse colors – the Hivvite – H2340 – villager, lived near Mt. Hermon = the tent of the high place is the answer of diverse colors from a village of Mt. Hermon.

Basemath – H1315 – spice, perfume, – daughter of Yishma’el – H3458 – El will hear – the sister of Nebayoth – H5032 – heights. (( Remember, Mt. Hermon is the area now known as the “Golan Heights”’.))

Verses 4-5 Sons of Esaw:

  • Eliphaz – H464 El(god) of gold, my El is fine gold,
  • Re’uel – H7467 friend of El
  • Ye’ush – H3266 – he hurries to aid
  • Ya’alam – H3281 – occult, hidden
  • Qorah – H7241 – bald

So the attributes of Esaw are found in the names of his sons: His god is fine gold, he is a friend of that god who hurries to his aid in the occult and made himself bald by stripping away the god of Abraham, Yitshaq and Ya’aqob.

The Edomites are those whose god is money, mammon (prosperity), and mix the worship of God with the occult, and are not worshipping the God of Abraham, Yitshaq, and Yisra’el.

Verse 6-7 – Makes it clear that Esaw’s wealth was so great that they could not dwell together with others and moved to Se’ir.

Verse 8 – Makes it clear that Esaw is Edom, who would historically be the enemy of Yisra’el.

1Ki 11:14  And יהוה raised up an adversary against Shelomoh, Haḏad the Edomite. He was of the seed of the sovereign in Eḏom.

Eze 25:12  ‘Thus said the Master יהוה, “Because of what Edom has done against the house of Yehudah by taking vengeance, so that they became very guilty, and they have taken vengeance on them,”

Eze 32:29  “There is Edom, her sovereigns and all her princes, who shall be given up in their might, with those slain by the sword. With the uncircumcised they lie, and with those going down to the Pit.

Verses 9-12 – Sons of Eliphaz:

Sons of אֱלִּיפַז Eliphaz:

  • תּמן / תּימן – Teman – Strong’s H8487 meaning, ‘south’
  • אומר – Omar – Strong’s H201 meaning, ‘speaker or eloquent’
  • צפי / צפו – Tsepho – Strong’s H6825 meaning, ‘watch tower’
  • גּעתּם – Gatam – Strong’s H1609 meaning, ‘a burnt valley’
  • קנז – Qenaz – Strong’s H7073 meaning, ‘hunter’

Eliphaz had a concubine – תִּמְׁנָׁע Timna – Strong’s H8555 which means, ‘restrained’ and she bore him a son – עֲמָׁלֵׂק

Amalĕq – Strong’s H6002 meaning, ‘dweller in the valley’.

Exo 17:13  And Yehoshua defeated Amalĕq and his people with the edge of the sword.

Exo 17:14  And יהוה said to Mosheh, “Write this for a remembrance in the book and recite it in the hearing of Yehoshua, that I shall completely blot out the remembrance of Amalĕq from under the heavens.”

Exo 17:15  And Mosheh built an altar and called its name, יהוה Nissi,

Exo 17:16  for he said, “Because a hand is on the throne of Yah, יהוה is to fight against Amalĕq, from generation to generation.”

There will always be an Amaleq to fight against Yah’s people.

Verse 13 – Sons of Re’uel:

  • נַחַת Naḥath – Strong’s H5184 which means, ‘rest’
  • זֶרַח Zeraḥ – Strong’s H2226 which means, ‘rising’
  • שַמָׁה Shammah – Strong’s H8048 which means, ‘astonishment’
  • מִּזָׁה Mizzah – Strong’s H4199 which means, ‘fear’

Verse 20-28 – The sons of Sĕʽir are listed here as they were dwelling in the land and both Ěsaw’s wife and concubine came from Sĕʽir.

The sons of שֵׂעִּיר Sĕʽir – Strong’s H8165 which is a mountain range in Eḏom, that lies south of the Dead Sea, meaning, ‘shaggy, hairy’:

  • לוֹטָׁן Lotan – Strong’s H3877 meaning, ‘covering’
  • חֹּרִּי Ḥori – Strong’s H2753 meaning, ‘cave dweller’
  • הֵׂימָׁם Hemam – Strong’s H1967 meaning, ‘exterminating’

Lotan’s sister was: תִּמְׁנָׁע Timna – Strong’s H8555 which means, ‘restrained’ (concubine of Ěsaw)

Verse 31 – Makes it very plain that the Edomites had kings before the Children of Yisra’el had kings because the King over the Children of Yisra’el was supposed to be YHVH but they rejected Him: 1Sa 8:7  And יהוה said to Shemu’ĕl, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from reigning over them.

Verse 32 – H1106 – בּלע – bela‛ – BDB Definition: Bela = “destruction”: son of H1160 – בּעור – be‛ôr – BDB Definition: Beor = “burning”. Remember Be’or was also the father of Bil’am: Num 22:5  and he sent messengers to Bilʽam son of Beʽor at Pethor, which is near the River in the land of the sons of his people, to call him, saying, “See, a people has come from Mitsrayim. See, they have covered the surface of the land, and are settling next to me!

Also, Bil’am was a false prophet or a “prophet for hire” who was hired to prophecy evil of the Children of Yisra’el.

Verse 33 – Very important verse with respect to understanding prophecy: Bela died and was replaced by H3103 – יובב – yôbâb – BDB Definition: Jobab = “a desert” son of: H2226 – זרח – zerach – BDB Definition: Zerah or Zarah = “rising” of: H1224 – בּצרה – botsrâh – BDB Definition: Bozrah = “sheepfold” or “fortress”

Isa 34:6  “The sword of יהוה shall be filled with blood, it shall be made overflowing with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams. For יהוה has a slaughtering in Botsrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Edom.

Isa 63:1  Who is this coming from Edom, with garments of glowing colours from Botsrah, who is robed in splendour, striding forward in the greatness of His strength? “It is I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.”

Jer 49:13  “For I have sworn by Myself,” declares יהוה, “that Botsrah is to become a ruin, a reproach, a waste, and a curse, and all its cities become everlasting wastes.”

Jer 49:22  See, like an eagle he flies up, and spreads his wings over Botsrah. And the heart of the mighty men of Edom in that day shall be like the heart of a woman in her pain.

Amo 1:12  “But I shall send fire upon Tĕman, and it shall consume the palaces of Botsrah.”

Husham died and replaced by Hadad – H1908 – הֲדַד – hădad – pagan god; son of Bedad – H911 – בְּדַד -bedad – separation;

Please note Verse 35: Gen 36:35 And Ḥusham died, and Haḏaḏ son of Beḏaḏ, who struck (H853) Miḏyan ((Abraham’s son)) in the field of Mo’aḇ, reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Awith (Ruin).

Hadad died and replaced by Samlah (H8072 – raiment cover) of Masreqah – (H4957 – vineyard)

Samlah died and replaced by Sha’ul (H7586 – asked, inquired) of Rehoboth (H7344 – streets) by the River

Sha’ul died and replaced by Ba’al Hanan (H1177 – Ba’al is gracious) son of Akbor (H5907 – mouse)

Ba’al Hanan died and replaced by Hadar (H1924 – honor) his city was Pa’u (H6464 – screaming)

What we see next in Verse 39 is very unusual in ancient Hebrew Scripture or literature. Please note: His wife’s name was H4105 – מהיטבאל – mehêyṭab’êl – BDB Definition: Mehetabeel or Mehetabel = “favoured of God”

The daughter of Matred – H4308 – מטרד – maṭrêd – BDB Definition: Matred = “pushing forward”

The daughter of Meyzahab – H4314 – מי זהב – mêy zâhâb – BDB Definition: Mezahab = “waters of gold”

Therefore, Hadar’s wife’s name was Favoured of El, Pushing forward, to the Waters of gold. ((Does this sound like a promise was kept?))

Gen 36:40 And these were the names of the chiefs of Ěsaw, according to their clans and their places, by their names:
