Bereshith (Genesis) 35

Lesson date: 3/24/5855AA

Verse 1 – Dwell = H3427 – יָשַׁב – yâshabyaw-shab‘ – to site down, dwell, to marry. It is easy to see that yashab means more than dwell. The true meaning behind yashab is to sit down at the feet of (in order to learn): Act 22:3  “I am indeed a Yehuḏite, having been born in Tarsos of Kilikia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamli’ĕl, having been instructed according to the exactness of the Torah of our fathers, being ardent for Elohim, as you all are today,

This is the full meaning of yashab and it is the root word for the Hebrew word “yeshiva” which means school. In essence YHVH told Ya’aqob “Return to My House (Beyt El) and sit down at my feet and I will teach you.”

Verse 2 – Part 1 = ‘put away’; H5493 – שׂוּר    סוּר – sûr    śûrsoor, soor – put away, decline, depart, revolt

Last week we discussed the fact that the House of Ya’aqob now included all the women and children of the city of Shekem. They may have foreign gods with them but also Rahel had her fathers foreign gods with her. When we are about to enter into the House of Elohim we can’t take our worship of foreign gods with us. Deu 12:2  “Completely destroy all the places where the nations which you are dispossessing served their mighty ones, on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree.

Deu 12:3  “And you shall break down their altars, and smash their pillars, and burn their Ashĕrim with fire. And you shall cut down the carved images of their mighty ones and shall destroy their name out of that place.

Deu 12:4  “Do not do so to יהוה your Elohim,

Part 2 = cleanse yourselves; H2891 – טָהֵר – ṭâhêrtaw-hare‘ – A primitive root; properly to be bright; that is, (by implication) to be pure; Jas 4:8  Draw near to Elohim and He shall draw near to you. Cleanse hands, sinners. And cleanse the hearts, you double-minded!

Psa_73:1  Elohim is truly good to Yisra’ĕl, To those whose heart is clean.

Part 3 = change garments : H2498 – חָלַף – châlaphkhaw-laf‘ – A primitive root; properly to slide by, that is, (by implication) to hasten away, altar, abolish, change. Why do we have to change garments? To what garments?

Exo 19:6  ‘and you shall be to Me a reign of priests and a set-apart nation.’ Those are the words which you are to speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl.”

1Pe 2:9  But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a set-apart nation, a people for a possession, that you should proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light,

Verse 3 – “And let us arise and go up to Bĕyth Ěl,” It is a strong bold declaration.

Verse 4 – Foreign mighty ones – Christmas, Easter, Valentines Day, Halloween: Jer 10:2  Thus said יהוה, “Do not learn the way of the gentiles, and do not be awed by the signs of the heavens, for the gentiles are awed by them.

Jer 10:3  “For the prescribed customs of these peoples are worthless, for one cuts a tree from the forest, work for the hands of a craftsman with a cutting tool.

Jer 10:4  “They adorn it with silver and gold, they fasten it with nails and hammers so that it does not topple.

Deu 12:30  guard yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed from before you, and that you do not inquire about their mighty ones, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their mighty ones? And let me do so too.’

Eze 11:12  “And you shall know that I am יהוה, for you have not walked in My laws nor executed My right-rulings, but have done according to the rulings of the gentiles1 which are all around you.” ’ ”

Earrings? Why earrings?

Verses 5-7 – Deu 11:25  ‘No man shall stand against you. יהוה your Elohim shall put the dread of you and the fear of you upon all the land where you tread, as He has spoken to you.

Psa 14:5  There they are in great fear, For יהוה is with the generation of the righteous.

Verse 8 – We do not have the full story of Deborah. Did Deborah seek out Ya’aqob after her mistress, Ribqah, died? Or, had Ribqah send Deborah to Ya’aqob to care for the children and wives of Ya’aqob in a time past. We don’t know. Alon Bakuth means “oak of weeping”.

Verses 9-12 YHVH identifies Himself to Ya’aqob and reminds him that his new name is Yisra’el. YHVH calls Himself El Shaddai – The Almighty. Shaddai (H7706) comes for shadad (H7703) – to deal violently with, to utterly destroy, devastate.

Verse 13 It is probably a coincidence but look at the language used here; “He went up” ‘alah – H5927 – to go up, to ascend. We see this word used often in relation to the ascending offering. Act 1:9  And having said this, while they were looking on, He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.

Act 1:10  And as they were gazing into the heaven as He went up, see, two men stood by them dressed in white,

Act 1:11  who also said, “Men of Galil, why do you stand looking up into the heaven? This same יהושע, who was taken up from you into the heaven, shall come in the same way as you saw Him go into the heaven.”

Verses 14-15 – Once again we see Ya’aqob commemorate his encounter with YHVH by raising a standing column and anointing it with oil. Any foreshadowing here?

Psa_118:22  The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief corner-stone.

Mat_21:42  יהושע said to them, “Did you never read in the Scriptures, ‘The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief corner-stone. This was from יהוה, and it is marvellous in our eyes’?

Verses 16-20 – The birth of Benyamin and the death of Rahel. Rahel named her son Ben-Oni “son of my sorrow” but Ya’aqob named him Benyamin “son of the right hand”.

Verses 21-22 – This my have been a random act on Reuben’s part, but I do not think so. Reuben, the first born of Leah, tired of the way Ya’aqob favored Rahel, intentionally slept with Rahel’s hand maid, Bilhah, now defiled, Ya’aqob would not sleep with her again. Now, Leah will be first in Ya’aqob’s sight ahead of her handmaiden, Zilpah.

  2. Binyamin בִּנְׁיָׁמִּין – Strong’s H1144 – son of the right hand (12th born)

Sons of Bilhah, Raḥĕl’s concubine:

  1. Gaḏ – גָׁד – Strong’s H1410 – troop (7th born)
  2. Ashĕr – אָׁשֵׂר – Strong’s H836 – blessed one (8th born)

Verses 27-29 – Ya’aqob returned to his father’s house in Mamre – H4471 – strength or fatness ((But in Aramaic it is translated Word. Thus he returned to his father’s house in the Word.)) or Qiryath Arba – city of four (Named for the four giants) or Hebron – association, league – H2275: Jos 14:13  Yehoshua then blessed him, and gave Ḥeḇron to Kalĕḇ son of Yephunneh as an inheritance.

Jos 14:14  So Ḥeḇron became the inheritance of Kalĕḇ son of Yephunneh the Qenizzite to this day, because he followed יהוה Elohim of Yisra’ĕl completely.
