Verse 1 – Dinah((Judgement or Justice/H1783)), of the house of Ya’aqob went out to see the daughters of the land. Instead of being contented with the women of the house of Ya’aqob she wanted to make friends with the young women of the world. Big lesson here. There are two verbs used in relation to Dinah, Yatsa H3318 – went out or departed for; and ra’ah H7200 – to see, observe, have an experience. Both of these verbs are written in the Qal active case meaning that she had a reason for wanting to go out and see.
Verse 2 – Shekem ((back or shoulder)) the son of Hamor((an ass)) the Hivvite ((villager)) raped Dinah. Do we see a problem here? Reminds me of a “certain rich man” in Luke 16:19.
Verses 3-4 – There is an old saying back in the old country, you know, Louisiana, “he asked for her hand after he had everything else.” In a way, I kind of feel sorry for Shekem. He committed a sin/trespass against a set-apart people and now wants his (worldly/rich) dad to get him out of trouble, not knowing the true sin that he has committed, which is sin against the Torah of the Almighty YHVH.
We see Shekem a rich prince of the land either rape or seduce Dinah. The language used in verse 4 makes it sound as though it may have been a concensual act. Maybe not. Why do fairy tales about beautiful maidens always have them rescued by a rich handsome prince? Hosea 2:14-16 “Therefore, see, I am alluring her, and shall lead her into the wilderness, and shall speak to her heart, 15 and give to her vineyards from there, and the Valley of Aḵor as a door of expectation. And there she shall respond as in the days of her youth, as in the day when she came up from the land of Mitsrayim. 16 “And it shall be, in that day,” declares יהוה , “that you call Me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer call Me ‘My Baʽal.’”
Verses 5-10 – Here we see an invitation for the house of Ya’aqob to dwell with and intermarry with the world. We see Hamor telling Ya’aqob that they can become equals to one another. The problem is the House of Ya’aqob is supposed to be separate for the Kena’anites and be their rulers: Gen 9:26 And he said, “Blessed be יהוה, the Elohim of Shĕm, and let Kenaʽan become his servant.
Verses 11-13 – Please notice in this exchange that Ya’aqob has said nothing. It is the sons of Ya’aqob who do the talking. Also notice that when they spoke it was deceitful.
Verses 14-24 – Here is another example of false doctrine “All you have to do is be circumcised to be like us”. Gal 2:2 And I went up by revelation, and laid before them that Good News which I proclaim among the gentiles, but separately to those who were esteemed, lest somehow I run, or had run, in vain.
Gal 2:3 But not even Titus who was with me, though a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.
Are we supposed to make a covenant with the dwellers in the land? No! Exodus 23:32 “Do not make a covenant with them nor with their mighty ones.”
Deuteronomy 7:2 “And when יהוה your Elohim gives them over to you, you shall smite them and put them under the ban, completely. Make no covenant with them, and show them no favour.”
Verses 25-31 Sh’imon and Levi are the ones who go out and “kill” all the males of the land.
Kill = harag H2026 – smite, destroy, kill
Murder = H7523 Exo 20:13 “You do not murder.
