Bereshith (Genesis) 33

Verse 1-2 – It may not look like it but Ya’aqob is splitting his camp into four parts; one for Leah, one Rahel, one for Bilhah and one for Zilpah, not unlike the military formation that the Children of Yisrael used when they came out of Mitsrayim or camp around the tabernacle. Remember, Benyamin has not yet been born.

Verse 3 – We see Ya’aqob, because of his maturity in the Ruach going out in front of the women and children, approaching his brother, and bowing 7 times..

Verse 4 – Was it because of Ya’aqob’s humbling himself that we see Esaw  running to embrace his brother, hug him and kiss him.

Verses 5-7 – Ya’aqob now introduces his family to Esaw.

Verses 8-11- Esaw wants to know why Ya’aqob sent the animals in succesive waves. Ya’aqob explains it is because he wanted to give a gift or atonement to Esaw, to make up for pass sins. It takes three tries but finally Esaw relents. In much of Asia it is still custom to offer something three times before accepting  the gift or kindness. To do so in less than three tries it is consider rash or greedy.

Verse 12 – This is a small verse in scope of words but it tells a much deeper story. After we have left the religion of the world, years later, our “brothers” will still invite us to follow them back into their camp.

Verses 13-20 – Se’ir means rough, hairy or shaggy and Ya’aqob declines to follow Esaw into the “rough” land. Instead, he makes his excuses and decides to go to the land of Shekem to a city called “Shalem”, Peace. We see Ya’aqob using the excuse (give me a little lattitude) that because he and those with him had recently come out of the world those with him were young and could not travel quickly. They had to go slowly and nurse as they went. Mat 24:17  “Let him who is on the house-top not come down to take whatever out of his house. ((i.e. household idols.))

Mat 24:18  “And let him who is in the field not turn back to get his garments. ((Wordly trappings.))

Mat 24:19  “And woe to those who are pregnant ((Beginning to see the truth)) and to those who are nursing children in those days! ((Babes in the True Word.))

Mat 24:20  “And pray that your flight does not take place in winter ((cold/rough, unforgiving doctrine.)) or on the Sabbath. ((This word in Greek G4521 is actually a singular plural much like deer, cattle or cannon and is refering to all the Sabbaths including the Sabbatical year.))

Remember the parable of the ten virgins, five are wise and five are foolish but both groups are virgins and therefore acceptable as part of the “bride”. But, the foolish one did not have enough oil to carry them through the darkness/winter and wanted the wise to sacrifice theirs instead. The wise told them to go to those that sell i.e. Wal-Mart, Target, Dollar General ((the world)) and get more oil, Torah and the Ruach Hakodesh, but they could not find Torah and the Ruach in the world, so they ran back to the gathering, Sukkoth, but they were denied access because they came at the wrong time. They were too late. Mat 25:13  “Watch therefore, because you do not know the day nor the hour in which the Son of Aḏam is coming,

Watch therefore, we are to be watchmen on the wall: 2Ki 17:9  And the children of Yisra’ĕl secretly did against יהוה their Elohim matters that were not right, and they built for themselves high places in all their cities, from watchtower unto the walled city,

2Ki 18:8  He smote the Philistines, as far as Azzah and its borders – from watchtower unto the walled city.

Jer 31:6  “For there shall be a day when the watchmen cry on Mount Ephrayim, ‘Arise, and let us go up to Tsiyon, to יהוה our Elohim.’ ”

Why did I include the above Scriptures, and there are many, many more? Because the word used is very important to us. When you read watchtower please read “tower of the watchmen” which is the literal translation and Jer. 31:6 it is correctly translated “watchmen”. What is this special word? H5341 netsarim. All the times in Job, Psalms and Proverbs where it tells us to “observe” Torah and the statutes or right-rulings it is the same word, netsar/netsarim.

Let’s sum it up: Esaw/Edom ((which means rough/hairy/ Red)) invites Ya’aqob to join him in Se’ir ((rough/shaggy/hairy)), but instead Ya’aqob decides to build booths for Sukkoth and pitched his tent in front(John 1:14) of Peace where he built an altar ((worshipped))  to “The Mighty El of Yisra’el”.

Please remember, when reading Torah, if it is the timeless document that we believe it to be, then it must apply to our lives today. We must be able to read in Torah and then the B’rit Hadasha and see that it is still relevant for us in the 21st Century. Chapter 33 will reinforce this idea in many, many ways and not just in the incidences that I have pointed out in this study.

Why not two or four or ten? This is a public show of repentance, for both groups to see, on the part of Ya’aqob and it should have special significance for Esau. Seven is the number of Creation and Esau was “created” born the elder so quite literally Ya’aqob is saying that he is repudiating the blessing and returning it to Esau as it was “in the beginning”.

In today’s world after we have left the religion of this world, years later, our “brothers” will still invite us to follow them back into their camp. Some may say, “Hey, we sure have been missing you, especially at Wednesday night Bible study. Why don’t you come “visit” with us?” This is Esau wanting his brother back to let bygones be bygones and now that he has his elder status back, and everyone saw it he can control what Ya’aqob does.

Verses 13-20 – Se’ir means rough, hairy or shaggy and Ya’aqob declines to follow Esau into the “rough” land. Instead, he makes his excuses and decides to go to the land of Shekem to a city called “Shalem”, Peace. Shalem is the ancient name for Yerushalayim and has been found carved, chiseled or painted on columns or blocks in walls by modern archeologist. We see Ya’aqob using the excuse ((give me a little lattitude)) that because he and those with him had recently come out of the Padan Aram (“world’s religion”) those with him were young ((Not sufficiently skilled in the Word)) and could not travel quickly. They had to go slowly and nurse (On your mother’s Torah) as they went: Pro_1:8 My son, heed the discipline of your father, And do not forsake the Torah of your mother;

Pro_6:20 My son, watch over your father’s command, And do not forsake Torah of your mother.

Please look at Verse 18. Stop and think about the beauty in it. Now look at this: Gen 33:18 And Ya‛aqoḇ came safely to the city of Sheḵem, which is in the land of Kena‛an, when he came from Paddan Aram. And he pitched his tent(H853) before the city. Anyone see anything prophetic here?

H2583 – חָנָה – chânâhkhaw-naw‘ – A primitive root (compare H2603); properly to incline; by implication to decline (of the slanting rays of evening); specifically to pitch a tent; generally to encamp (for abode or siege): – abide (in tents), camp, dwell, encamp, grow to an end, lie, pitch (tent), rest in tent.
