Bereshith (Genesis) 3 — Who or what is the Nachash?

Lesson date: 11/12/5854AA

Please note in the Chapter 2 study guide I did not do verse 25. There is a reason for that. I believe that verse 25 and verse 3:1 are to be read together and here is the reason. The word used in verse 25 for naked is: H6174 – עָרֹם  עָרוֹם – ‛ârôm ‛ârôm – aw-rome’, aw-rome’ – From H6191 (in its original sense); nude, either partially or totally: – naked.

Now look at the word used for crafty in verse 3:1: H6175 – עָרוּם – ‛ârûm – aw-room’ – Passive participle of H6191; cunning (usually in a bad sense): – crafty, prudent, subtil.

The words are virtually identical. Put them side by side  עָרוֹם –  עָרוּם and see how nearly impossible it would be to tell them apart. This is a play on words that intricately links naked with crafty.

For non-native Hebrew speakers it would be virtually impossible to read from a Hebrew scroll, especially an ancient one that had no diacritical markings. In the Middle Ages, verses and chapters were added to make it easier to read in Latin, and later in German, then English. But look at the commands: Deu 12:32  “All the words I am commanding you, guard to do it – do not add to it nor take away from it.

Suppose you wrote an intimate letter to the person you love most and someone got that letter and dissected it in a way that changed the meaning (we will see an example of this shortly). Look at the difference a comma can make: Luk 23:43  And יהושע said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today, you shall be with Me in Paradise.” Now move the comma from behind ‘today’ and put it behind ‘you’. Hebrew and Greek do not possess punctuation like English does.

Verses 1-3 – After a lifetime of being told that the nachash was a snake it is shocking for many people when they discover that that is not the truth. Nachash, H5175, which is translated as a snake actually means “shining one”. Why the difference? I believe it is because of deception.

Do we see this anywhere else in Scripture? Yes: 2Co 11:14  And no wonder! For Satan himself masquerades as a messenger of light! A shining one.

Eze 28:13  “You were in Ěden, the garden of Elohim. Every precious stone was your covering: the ruby, topaz, and diamond, beryl, shoham, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald and gold. The workmanship of your settings and mountings was prepared for you on the day you were created.

Eze 28:14  “You were the anointed keruḇ that covered. And I placed you, you were on the set-apart mountain of Elohim. You walked up and down in the midst of stones of fire.

H3368 – יָקָר – yâqâr – yaw-kawr’ – From H3365; valuable (objectively or subjectively): – brightness,

In verse 1 we see how Hasatan works. He changes the form of the command: Gen 2:16  And יהוה Elohim commanded the man, saying, “Eat of every tree of the garden,

Here is what Hasatan asks Havvah: “Is it true that Elohim has said, ‘Do not eat of every tree of the garden’?” It is just a very subtle difference but it is different from what the command really was. In light of this was Havvah’s answer correct? What had Havvah done? She added to the Word. What did she add? H5060 – נָגַע – nâga‛ – naw-gah’ – A primitive root; properly to touch, that is, lay the hand upon (for any purpose; euphemistically, to lie with a woman);

Lust! Her eyes were opened to lust. In the Acts of John, John comments that Havvah ate of the tree of concupiscence. Strong sexual desire, lust! And, it was not for her husband, that would not have been sin. Because she lusted for another rather than her husband we see the first sin is adultery. Rom 13:14  but put on the Master יהושע Messiah, and make no provision for the lusts of the flesh.

2Co 11:3  But I am afraid, lest, as the serpent deceived Hawwah by his trickery, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Messiah.

G1818 – ἐξαπατάω – exapataō – ex-ap-at-ah’-o – From G1537 and G538; to seduce wholly: – beguile, deceive.

Verses 4-5 – Was Hasatan’s response to Havvah true? Yes, halfway. Hasatan knew that Havvah would not physically die immediately upon eating the fruit but that mankind would now be susceptible to death and their relationship with Elohim would “die” and could no longer be in His presence.

Verse 6 – In my mind the most important part of verse 6 is this: And she also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Adam failed to do as he was instructed in Ber. 2:15 and that was to guard the garden. He should not have allowed the nachash into the garden but perhaps, because of the shining appearance similar to that of Elohim he was curious and let him in.

Verse 7-8 – Man sinned and as is man’s nature he tried to hide his sin. We might be able to hide it for a while, even our whole lives but in the presence of Elohim we will not be able to hide it.

Verses 9-11 – Did YHVH truly not know where Adam was? Of course He did, and in fact He knew sin had occurred and could not look upon it. I call this the discovery process. This is where we are shown our sin by the Ruach Hakodesh. As a Christian I was not really worried about my sins because I knew they were forgiven anyway. As a believer in Torah I now know that I need to confess my sin and not do it again and again and again falsely believing that I had a free pass, so to speak, to sin as often as I wanted or, did not know that I had even sinned. This is how I apply these verses:

“Daryl, where are you?”

“I’m hiding.”

“Why are you hiding?”

“Because I have sinned.”

Who told you that you sinned?”

“Your Torah!”

“and do not know that you are wretched, and pitiable, and poor, and blind, and naked.” (Hazon 3:17)

“I do now and I have no excuse.”

Psa 32:5  I acknowledged my sin to You, And my crookedness I did not hide. I have said, “I confess my transgressions to יהוה,” And You forgave the crookedness of my sin. Selah.

Pro 28:13  He who hides his transgressions does not prosper, But he who confesses and forsakes them finds compassion.

Job 31:33  If I have covered my transgressions like Adam, by hiding my crookedness in my bosom,

Job 31:34  then let me fear the great crowd, and dread the scorn of clans, then I would be silent, and go out of the door!

Look in verse 11. YHVH asked Adam “Who” not “What” made you know that you were naked.

Verses 12-13 – Man is always wanting to blame his sin on someone else and that is what Adam does here. Indirectly he tries to blame YHVH through Havvah.

Verse 14 – Once again we see a prophecy early on. I do not believe that the nachash was a snake that walked and talked as I said earlier. I believe it is referring to Hasatan. Does he slither and crawl on his belly? No, not yet. Isa 14:12  “How you have fallen from the heavens, O Hĕlĕl, son of the morning! You have been cut down to the ground, you who laid low the gentiles!

H1966 – הֵילֵל – hêylêl – hay-lale’ – From H1984 (in the sense of brightness); the morning star: – lucifer.

Verse 15 – The promise of the Messiah is seen in the seed of the woman. A woman does not possess a seed within herself only the eggs but here we see a promise of a woman who will produce a seed without intercourse. We also see that Hasatan will only be able to bruise or crush His heel, not a permanent injury but He will crush Hasatan’s head, a deadly injury.

Verse 16 – I will qualify this by saying, I see this as a prophecy. I do not believe it is merely saying that Havvah’s pregnancy will be longer but rather she will produce twins, Qayin and Hebel. “And your desire is for your husband, and he does rule over you.”

Why would He say this if there are only two people on the face of the Earth? This is not saying that she desires or longs for her husband. Rather, it is saying she desires his position of authority, that of ruling over his wife/mate. 1Ti 2:13  Because Aḏam was formed first, then Ḥawwah.

1Ti 2:14  And Adam was not deceived, but the woman, having been deceived, fell into transgression.

1Ti 2:15  But she shall be saved in childbearing if they continue in belief, and love, and set-apartness, with sensibleness.

Verses 17-19 – The curse of mankind, death.

Rom 8:19  For the intense longing1 of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of Elohim. Footnote: 1Lit. anxiously looking with outstretched head.

Rom 8:20  For the creation was subjected to futility, not from choice, but because of Him who subjected it, in anticipation,

Rom 8:21  that the creation itself also shall be delivered from the bondage to corruption into the esteemed freedom of the children of Elohim.

Rom 8:22  For we know that all the creation groans together, and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now.

Rom 8:23  And not only so, but even we ourselves who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, we ourselves also groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.

Rom 8:24  For in this expectation we were saved, but expectation that is seen is not expectation, for when anyone sees, does he expect it?

Verse 20 – Not yet she hasn’t. Why?

Verse 21 – Yet again we have word play in a big way. H5785 – עוֹר – ‛ôr – ore – From H5783; skin (as naked); by implication hide, leather: – hide, leather, skin.

YHVH killed an animal, probably more than one because I believe they were lambs of the first year. He used these skins to hide their sin. But what is significant here is the word for skins “ore” which sounds like another word: H216 – אוֹר – ‘ôr – ore – From H215; illumination or (concretely) luminary (in every sense, including lightning, happiness, etc.): – bright, clear, + day, light (-ning), morning, sun.

Why do I believe that they were covered with lambskins? Because lambskins were used in the writing of the Torah. It must be the dried skin of a kosher animal. Once dried they were tried and after being written upon they were sewn together with the veins of the animal that provided the skins. These skins were known as “The Leaves of the Torah Scroll.” These were also called “The Garments of Righteousness.” Where do we see these in Scripture?

Job 29:14  I put on righteousness, and it robed me; right-ruling was my cloak and turban.

Psa 132:9  Let Your priests put on righteousness, And Your kind ones shout for joy.

Isa 11:5  And righteousness shall be the girdle of His loins, and trustworthiness the girdle of His waist.

Isa 59:17  And He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of deliverance on His head. And He put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and wrapped Himself with ardour as a mantle.

Isa 61:10  I greatly rejoice in יהוה, my being exults in my Elohim. For He has put garments of deliverance on me, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

Isa 64:6  And all of us have become as one unclean, and all our righteousnesses are as soiled rags. And all of us fade like a leaf, and our crookednesses, like the wind, have taken us away.

Zec 3:4  And He answered and spoke to those who stood before Him, saying, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” And to him He said, “See, I have removed your guilt from you, and shall put costly robes on you.”

Eph 6:14  Stand, then, having girded your waist with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

Rev 3:4  “Nevertheless, you have a few names in Sardis who have not defiled their garments. And they shall walk with Me in white, because they are worthy.

Rev 19:8  And to her it was given to be dressed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteousnesses of the set-apart ones.

The implication is that YHVH clothed Adam and Havvah in Torah.

Verses 22-24 – Man is driven from the garden. Note what is said in verse 23: Gen 3:23  so יהוה Elohim sent him out of the garden of Ěden to till the ground from which he was taken,

The first occupants outside the garden of Eden were hunter gathers not farmers. Now, with Adam and Havvah outside the isolation of the garden Adam brings agriculture to the rest of the world.

Why couldn’t Adam eat from the Tree of Life and live forever? He would have had to live in his sin forever with no chance of Redemption. Through death he had the opportunity to be redeemed through the Messiah promised in verse 15. YHVh was not being mean to Adam and Havvah, just the opposite. He was making a way to restore fellowship with mankind.

Pro 3:18  She ((Wisdom)) is a tree of life to those taking hold of her, And blessed are all who retain her.

Pro 11:30  The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who is winning lives is wise.

Pro 15:4  A healing tongue is a tree of life, But perverseness in it crushes the spirit.

Rev_2:7  “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies. To him who overcomes I shall give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of Elohim.

Rev 22:14  “Blessed are those doing His commands, so that the authority shall be theirs unto the tree of life, and to enter through the gates into the city.

Ahavah,
