Verses 1-5 – This chapter probably should be called “Respect you father and your mother” for Shemoth 20:12 or Pro 6:20 My son, watch over your father’s command, And do not forsake the Torah of your mother.
This may have been Sha’ul’s inspiration for: 2Co 6:14 Do not become unevenly yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness? And what fellowship has light with darkness?
Look closely at the first part of verse 1. Is this not what happens to us in our walk with YHVH? He calls us, He blesses us and He commands us. His blessing is His commands and His commands are our Blessing. It is what sets us apart.
I am certain that by this time, Elezar, Abraham’s faithful servant, is dead and could not go to Paddan Aram with or for Ya’aqob, but that was not the point. In Chapter 27 verse 46 we see Ribqah setting up Yitshaq by her words. Remember, her name means “enchanter or enchantress”. The point being that she wanted to get Ya’aqob away for Esaw. Also, remember that Abraham sent Elezar so that Yitshaq would not leave the Promised Land but here we see Yitshaq commanding his con to leave the Promised Land on his own. The command is for Ya’aqob to go to Paddan Aram but verse 3 is the blessing.
It makes me wonder whether or not Ribqah knew that her family would in some way entrap or as the old folks used to say “snooker” Ya’aqob into staying a long period of time. Remember, they tried to get Elezar to stay at least 10 days but he very cleverly refused the invitation. (Bere. 24:55-58)
Verse 6-9 – Esaw sees and hears or hears of the advice that Yitshaq gives Ya’aqob and spitefully takes on of Yishma’el’s daughter to be his wife in addition to his other wives. Isn’t this exactly what the ‘church’ does? Notice too that this act puts Esaw in covenant with Yishma’el. His wife, Mahalath, is called the sister of Nebayoth, Yishma’el’s first born.
Verse 10 – I do not mean to beat a dead horse but look at this verse carefully. If Ya’aqob was going to Ur of the Chaldees, the land of Abraham, he would have been a fool to go due north from Be’esheba to Beyth El. He should have gone due east and cut across the low country south of the Dead Sea, around Tso’ar, and proceeded due east toward Ur. But instead he goes due north, showing that Abraham came from the area of northern Syria or southern Turkey, not Ur.
Verse 11 – Here we see Ya’aqob taking of the stones on which to place his head. Wow! This is very symbolic of making Yeshua our head, to place our head on the stone that the builders rejected(Ps. 188:22), the stone cut for the mountain except by no one’s hands (Daniel 2:45). Isn’t this a perfect simile for us to immitate, that we should put Yeshua at our head?
Verse 12 – Vayochalam – And he dreamed – this is an understatement. It means to be struck speechless as well as to dream. Have you ever had a dream that was so lifelike that you were at a loss for words? The word ladder is often used but can you imagine angels going up and down the same ladder at the same time. The word – sulam – H5551 means a staircase, it also means a ladder.
Verses 13-15 – “I Am” Hiyeh -Asher- Hiyeh = YHVH. Our Creator identifies Himself to Ya’aqob and then proceeds to bestow upon him the same blessing that He gave his father and grandfather.
Verse 16 – Ya’aqob realizes that he has come to a place where YHVH resides. Today, we would call this place a “portal” or maybe even a “stargate”. A place where one is able to go for one plane of existence to another, like Mt. Hermon, where the disobedient angels came down to earth and took human wives.
Verse 17 – How awesome is this place. H3372 – yare – dreadful, to cause to fear, to revere. Look at what he says next, “This is none other than the House of Elohim” – Beyth El. Beyth can also mean family as well as house. But look at what Yeshua tells Nathaniel in John 1: Joh 1:51 And He said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, from now on you shall see the heaven opened, and the messengers of Elohim ascending and descending upon the Son of Adam.”
Yeshua is correctly identifying himself with His Father’s House, as the Rock upon which Ya’aqob laid his head.
Verse 18-19 – We see Ya’aqob “took the (H853) stone”, and setting it upright(H853) as a column and anointing the Rock with oil. It was upon this Rock that the future kings of Yisra’el and Judah would rest their right hand in an oath to YHVH to keep His Torah there, beside the Gihon Springs. They would then take the zigzag staircase back up to the threshing floor of Aranah, the site of the temple.
And he called (H853) the name of the place Beyth El. Now, here is a really fun thing to see, the name of the place was formerly called Luz. Luz = almond tree: Num 17:8 And it came to be on the next day that Mosheh went into the Tent of the Witness and saw that the rod of Aharon, of the house of Lĕwi, had budded, and brought forth buds, and blossomed and bore ripe almonds.
Num 17:10 And יהוה said to Mosheh, “Bring Aharon’s rod back before the Witness, to be kept as a sign against the rebels, so that you put an end to their grumblings against Me, lest they die.”
The very rod that was used by Aharon and Mosheh to work miracles in the Name of YHVH was an almond tree
Verses 20-22 – Verse 20 calls to remembrance, for me at least, what Yeshua asked His disciples: Luk 22:35 And He said to them, “When I sent you without purse and bag and sandals, did you lack any?” And they said, “None at all.”
Here we see Ya’aqob promising to give a tenth or a tithe, like Abraham did with Malkitsedek (Bere. 14) who was a type and shadow of Yeshua. (Ps. 110:4; Hebrews 6:20; 7:1-28). Malkitsedek, a type and shadow of Yeshua, the Rock, a type and shadow of Yeshua.

As children of the Most High we are expected to walk as instructed. We see a clear pattern in Proverbs/Mishle. Mishle Chapter 1 instructs us to be alert against being enticed by sinners and the need for us to be on guard against following the ways of the wrong.
Mishle Chapter 2 as our Father’s children we are instructed to be obedient and told the reward for our obedience.
Mishle Chpater 3 we see a clear command to not forget our Father’s Torah.
Mishle Chapter 4 we see the urgent appeal to “hear” the Our Father’s words which expresses the necessity to be faithful in hearing attentively to, taking heed of and accepting the words that are being spoken very clearly and plainly, so that the son(children) may live.
Mishle Chapter 5 we see a clear appeal to us as children of the Most-High – that we ‘hear’ and ‘accept’ what we hear, so as to walk in the life of the words of our Father!
Mishle Chapter 6 shows us clearly the powerful relationship of the love of a father for his son that he disciplines in the instructions and commands he gives.
This may have been Sha’ul’s inspiration for: 2Co 6:14 Do not become unevenly yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness? And what fellowship has light with darkness?

I see the struggle between Ya’aqob and Esau as an exemplification of the struggle between Yah’s People and the “church”. Yah’s People are in covenant with Yah and as a result of that, accept His Instructions and Right-Rulings. Esau on the other hand rejects the Father’s Covenent and does the exact opposite of what he should do to please his Father. It is almost as if Esau says to himself, “Let’s see if this will get His attention.” If you were to make a statement to the effect of, “There is nothing good about that person” my dad would say, “son they’ll serve as a good, bad example.” And, that is exactly what the church has done, rejected the covennant that brings salvation invented one predicated upon grace without obedience to YHVH’s covenant and condemn thosw who keep His Commands: Rev_12:17 And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to fight with the remnant of her seed, those guarding the commands of Elohim and possessing the witness of יהושע Messiah.
Rev_14:12 Here is the endurance of the set-apart ones, here are those guarding the commands of Elohim and the belief of יהושע.
Rev_22:14 “Blessed are those doing His commands, so that the authority shall be theirs unto the tree of life, and to enter through the gates into the city.
Verse 10 – Once again we see that to get to Abraham’s home you must go north and not east.
Verse 11 – Here we see Ya’aqob taking of the stones on which to place his head. Wow! Look at Verse 14. The word used and translated “break forth” by the ISR is literally correct. However, the meaning is far more than just that: H6555 – פָּרַץ – pârats – paw-rats’ – A primitive root; to break out (in many applications, direct and indirect, literally and figuratively): – X abroad, (make a) breach, break (away, down, -er, forth, in, up), burst out come (spread) abroad,
