Bereshith (Genesis) 27 — “Who is deceiving Whom?”

Lesson date: 02/11/5855AA

Verses 1-4 – This is a very complicated chapter and the concepts in it go back to chapter Ber. 25:23. Did Ribqah tell her husband what YHVH had told her? Was Yitshaq working to make the prophecy she had been given null and void? Esaw sold his birthright to his younger brother, was he now trying to renege on the deal? Was Ribqah being obedient to Yah’s word or trying to facilitate the covenant between the brothers? We do not know but, one thing we do know is there is no innocent party in this story.

Let’s look at the phrase “his eyes were too dim to see”. The word eyes is ‘ayin – H5869 and is important but look at the word for “see” – raah – ראה – râ’âh does not contain the letter ‘ayin as a component. The word that does contain the letter ‘ayin as a component is ra’ah – H7462 – רעה – râ‛âh – which means; to pasture, to tend, to shepherd.

Deu 29:4  “But יהוה has not given you a heart to know and eyes to see and ears to hear, till this day.

There is a difference between ‘seeing’ and ‘perceiving’ and it lies in fact of ‘knowing what you are looking at’. Many times I have climbed a tree to hunt deer in the dark of the night and as the dawn begins to break the grey light starts to bring out images and many of them, in my imagination, looks just like a deer. It is not until we ‘see’ by means of the true light of the day that we understand or perceive that those images were the workings of our imagination.

Psa 119:105  Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

Without the benefit of the ‘true light” we can be deceived, just as Yitshaq was, by something that “sounds good” or “sounds close”. But by using YHVH’s Word we can see through the dimness and perceive that what we are looking at is actually a false image or false messiah, but we must look to the Word.

Please check your vision now. Is it 20:20?

Eze 20:20  ‘And set apart My Sabbaths, and they shall be a sign between Me and you, to know that I am יהוה your Elohim.’

Here is an interesting fact about Yitshaq, in Chapter 22, when Abraham took him to Mt. Moriah to sacrifice him to YHVH as commanded, look what happens in verse 14. Abraham called the place YHVH Yireh – which comes for the root word – raah – H7200. YHVH ‘saw’ what Abraham did and it was counted to him as righteousness: Heb 11:17  By belief, Aḇraham, when he was tried, offered up Yitsḥaq, and he who had received the promises offered up his only brought-forth son,

Heb 11:18  of whom it was said, “In Yitshaq your seed shall be called,”

Heb 11:19  reckoning that Elohim was able to raise, even from the dead, from which he received him back, as a type.

In verse 4 we see the thing that is important to Yitshaq is good food: Php 3:18  For many – of whom I have often told you, and now say to you even weeping – walk as enemies of the stake of Messiah.

Php 3:19  Their end is destruction, their mighty one is their stomach, and their esteem is in their shame – they mind the earthly.

Verse 5 – We do not know if Ribqah ever told Yitshaq what YHVH told her about the boys. She may have kept this secret, knowing what had happened with her husband and his brother, Yishma’el. It is at this point that Ribqah devises a plan to ‘deceive’ Yitshaq rather than trusting in YHVH to work it out according to His Plan: Job 34:12  The truth is, Ěl does not do wrong, and the Almighty does not twist right-ruling.

Job 34:13  Who has assigned to Him the earth? And who has laid out all the world?

Why do we always think YHVH needs our help? I am probably the most guilty of this.

In verses 3 & 7 we see Yitshaq telling Esaw to bring him wild game – venison, but in verse 9 we see Ribqah commanding Ya’aqob to go to the flock and take two kid goats. Both are clean animals, deer and goats, but the deer is wild and must be hunted and the goats are domesticated and are easily taken.

Jer 16:15  but, ‘יהוה lives who brought up the children of Yisra’ĕl from the land of the north and from all the lands where He had driven them.’ For I shall bring them back into their land I gave to their fathers.

Jer 16:16  “See, I am sending for many fishermen,” declares יהוה, “and they shall fish them. And after that I shall send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain and every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks.

Mat 15:24  And He answering, said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Yisra’ĕl.”

I have heard many “Christians” say that they are “gentile Christians”. There is no such thing! We are either lost sheep of the House of Yisra’el or not. Are we wild game to be hunted or are we ‘of the flock’ of Yisra’el? Yeshua made His disciples “Fishers of men” from the lost sheep of Yisra’el, not hunters. This is an important distinction and we will talk more about it a little later in the chapter.

Verses 11-17 – In verses 2, 7 & 10 we see allusions to Yitshaq’s impending death. Was he sick? What we do know is that Yitshaq depended on his other senses, rather than eyesight, to discern his surroundings. Perhaps this is why he wanted a ‘tasty dish’ because it smelled good. Knowing this Ribqah uses Esaw’s clothes to deceive Yitshaq. We also see Ribqah using the fleeces of the two young goats onto Ya’aqob to deceive Yitshaq’s sens of touch: Mat_7:15  “But beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are savage wolves.

Perhaps Ribqah’s punishment for this deception was the fact that she would never see her son again after the events of Chapter 27.

Verse 13 is a very powerful verse. Do you see it? Ya’aqob was not wanting to deceive his father or at least was reluctant. But look at what his mother told him. “Let your curse be on me. Only obey my voice”. This is a powerful shadow of our Messiah.: Gal 3:13  Messiah redeemed us from the curse of the Torah, having become a curse for us – for it has been written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs upon a tree.”

Pro 1:8  My son, heed the discipline of your father, And do not forsake the Torah of your mother;

Okay? But that is not all there is still more here in this tale we need to look at, first, why two goats? Second, what scent was on the garments?

Lev 16:8  “And Aharon shall cast lots for the two goats, one lot for יהוה and the other lot for Azazel.

Lev 16:9  “And Aharon shall bring the goat on which the lot for יהוה fell, and shall prepare it as a sin offering.

Lev 16:10  “But the goat on which the lot for Azazel fell is caused to stand alive before יהוה, to make atonement upon it, to send it into the wilderness to Azazel.

The goat that the lot fell upon was dedicated to YHVH, Ya’aqob, and the other was sent out into the wilderness, to Azazel, Esaw. Esaw’s clothes had the scent of the “field” or wilderness upon them. Ya’aqob used the skin of the goat to pass for Esaw just like Yeshua put on skins, flesh and blood, so that he can “pass” for us, our sinful nature, yet He was without sin: Heb 4:15  For we do not have a High Priest unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who was tried in all respects as we are, apart from sin.

Verses 18-27 – Here we see Yitshaq is suspicious of Ya’aqob. Notice too how Ya’aqob chooses his words carefully. This is his first challenge of Ya’aqob. The second challenge is to feel Ya’aqob but because of the skin of the goat he passes for Esaw. Thirdly, we see Yitshaq wanting Ya’aqob to kiss him so that he can smell the clothes of Esaw. Ya’aqob felt like Esaw and smelled like Esaw but what gave him away? His voice, in verse 22: Joh 10:27  “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.

Verses 28-29 – Here we see the blessing.

Verses 30-35 – We see that everything was as Yitshaq suspected. It was Ya’aqob that he had blessed. But did Ya’aqob have the right to do what he did?

Verse 36 – I disagree with the misleading translation of the ISR here. The ISR makes it sounds as though Esaw had more than one brother and was wanting to know his name. This is not correct. In fact, Esaw is not actually asking a question at all. What he is doing is making a statement of fact. Basically he is saying: “He is correctly called Ya’aqob because he has cheated (supplanted; caught me by the heel) me these 2 times.”

Verses 37-40 – The blessing of Esaw is very important for us to understand what is going on in the Middle East today. Esaw is now growing restless and is using the sword to take back what he considers rightfully his but because of the blessing of the Father it was given to Ya’aqob. Going back to where I mentioned that we would look at the fishers of men and the hunters of men. Rev 6:2  And I looked and saw a white horse , and he who sat on it holding a bow. And a crown was given to him, and he went out overcoming and to overcome.

We see an image that is deceptive. A “knight” riding a white horse. This must be the good guy, right? No, it is a picture of Esaw, carrying his bow, looking, hunting for Ya’aqob, Yisra’el. He was given a crown so that he could rule and overcome for a period of time. He looks like the good guy, he is riding a white horse and he has a crown so this must be the good guy. It’s not. He has his bow so that he can hunt out the lost sheep of the House of Yisa’el wherever he finds them.

Rev 13:7  And it was given to him to fight with the set-apart ones and to overcome them. And authority was given to him over every tribe and tongue and nation.

Dan 7:21  “I was looking, and this horn was fighting against the set-apart ones, and was prevailing against them,

Dan 7:25  and it speaks words against the Most High, and it wears out the set-apart ones of the Most High,

Esaw is now breaking his brother’s yoke and we are witnessing it in ‘real time’.

But is this where this prophecy ends? No, it can also be compared to Torahless Church. The Church has surrendered it birthright by deception. The church’s motto should be: “You can have your sin and eat it, too.” But rather than being yoked with Yeshua: Mat 11:29  “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am meek and humble in heart, and you shall find rest for your beings.

Mat 11:30  “For My yoke is gentle and My burden is light.”

1Jn 5:3  For this is the love for Elohim, that we guard His commands, and His commands are not heavy,

The church wants to be “unyoked” from Torah. What does Yeshua say about this? Mat 7:21  “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Master, Master,’ shall enter into the reign of the heavens, but he who is doing the desire of My Father in the heavens.

Mat 7:22  “Many shall say to Me in that day, ‘Master, Master, have we not prophesied in Your Name, and cast out demons in Your Name, and done many mighty works in Your Name?’

Mat 7:23  “And then I shall declare to them, ‘I never knew you, depart from Me, you who work lawlessness!’ Lawlessness = Torahlessness.

Psa 50:16  But to the wrong Elohim said, “What right have you to recite My laws, Or take My covenant in your mouth,

Psa 50:17  “While you hated instruction And cast My Words behind you?

The church hates His Instructions, His Torah. I shudder to that that I was in this category. I did not have the right to recite His Laws or to mention His Covenant because I had cast His Words over my shoulder as if to say, “There, I am done with that.”

Verses 41-42 – It makes the enemy feel better is they can kill you.

Verse 43-46 – A new deception is brewing.

Ahavah,

This is just an aside: the word used for “Here I am” is  הָאֲנָא – Hanah – H2009 – הִנֵּה – hinnêh – hin-nay’ – Prolonged for H2005; lo!: – behold, lo, see. It is the same root word used here: Psa 133:1 See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity – But there was no unity for Ya’aqob and Esau.

Let’s look at the phrase “his eyes were too dim to see”. Verses 30-35 – We see that everything was as Yitshaq suspected. It was Ya’aqob that he had blessed. But did Ya’aqob have the right to do what he did? We see Esau wanting to regain his birthright which he had sold to his brother so, he knew that he was trying to get something that was not truly his to receive. There is always a a ‘but’ and here it is: but, did Yitshaq know what Ribqah had been told of YHVH about the two boys. Did Yitshaq “tremble exceedingly’ when he realized that he almost blessed the wrong son? At this age Yishaq was guided by his physical senses to augment his blindness; smell, taste and feel.

I think about this and wonder is that not why I was in the “church” because it satisfied my physical senses, because it felt right. Now, I have to apply this to my coming of the knowledge of Torah in my life. Without repentence I can have no inheritence in the Kingdom. I am like Esau, I now realize that I have traded my true claim to YHVH’s inheritance and now want to win it back without repenting for having taken it so lightly. Even as Esau bitterly weeps, he does not repent. It is at judgement that those who have discarded YHVH’s only convenant that brings true salvation for the things of this world that makes of ‘feel’ good. Mat_22:13 “Then the sovereign said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and throw him out into the outer darkness – there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Mat 24:50 the master of that servant shall come on a day when he does not expect it, and at an hour he does not know,

Mat 24:51 and shall cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites – there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Luk 13:27 “But He shall say, ‘I say to you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of unrighteousness.’

Luk 13:28 “There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Aḇraham and Yitsḥaq and Ya‛aqoḇ and all the prophets in the reign of Elohim, and yourselves thrown outside.

I think about the impications of this Scripture as Torahless believers expect to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven without being obedient to YHVH’s Commands but will not get the blessing from their Father. It will be as Yeshua’ said: Mat 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Master, Master,’ shall enter into the reign of the heavens, but he who is doing the desire of My Father in the heavens.

Mat 7:22 “Many shall say to Me in that day, ‘Master, Master, have we not prophesied in Your Name, and cast out demons in Your Name, and done many mighty works in Your Name?’

Mat 7:23 “And then I shall declare to them, ‘I never knew you, depart from Me, you who work lawlessness!’  <<<<<<Torahlessness!!!
