Bereshith (Genesis) 24 — “Following my Master’s Instructions”

Lesson date: 1/20/5855AA

Verse 1 – Please note exactly what it says in verse 1, “And YHVH had blessed Abraham in every way.”

Not only had YHVH blessed Abraham with “physical” wealth; gold, silver, livestock, etc. but He had also given Abraham a son by Sarah, as promised, named Abraham as a prophet to Pharoah, was known as a Prince of YHVH to the sons of Heth, victory over Nimrod (Amraphel, and Kedolomer, his general) and respected by all. By all measures of the world Abraham was a success, but despite all this he still walked in the WAY of YHVH. His eyes could not be turned from depending on the guidance of YHVH despite his wealth, not because of it. ((I wish I could insert an emoji right here.))

Verse 2-4 – Abraham calls his oldest servant, most faithful servant to his side to swear: shaba – H7650 – swear, exchange oaths, to make a vow, by placing his hand beneath Abraham’s thigh. This is close personal contact which represents a close personal bond between the two men. Remember, if this Eli’ezer that by this time he is already in his 60’s at least and has probably bathed his master many, many times. When YHVH told Abram of what he was going to do Abram pointed out the fact that his servant born in Damaseq would inherit everything because he had no son.

This oath begins by telling Eli’ezer not to take a wife for Yitshaq from among the Kena’anites but to go back to his own people to take a wife for his son. This is a close personal bond between these two men for the father to entrust the responsibility of finding a wife for his son. This means that Eli’ezer must have been with Abraham since before he left Haran and knew the way back to Abraham’s kin folk. Remember, at this time Yitshaq is at least 37 years old and has never been outside of the Promised Land in his life.

Stop and think about the inter-relationship for a moment; Eli’ezer is the property of Abraham and was born in Abraham’s tents/camp. Abraham is about to give silver and gold to Eli’ezer, with camels and servants of his own to travel hundreds of miles to find a wife for Yitshaq. This is a close personal relationship shared between these two men. There is no fear that Eli’ezer will run off with the money or in some way try to thwart Abraham’s plan. Servant – H5650 – ‘ebed take a look at the pictographic:

o         = eye, to watch, see

b         = tent floor plan, house

d         = tent flap, door

The one who watches at the tent door.

Mat 24:42  “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Master is coming.

Mat 24:43  “And know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into.

Mat 24:44  “Because of this, be ready too, for the Son of Aḏam is coming at an hour when you do not expect Him.

Mat 24:45  “Who then is a trustworthy and wise servant, whom his master set over his household, to give them food in season?

Rom 1:1  Sha’ul, a servant of יהושע Messiah, a called emissary, separated to the Good News of Elohim,

Jas 1:1  Yaʽaqob, a servant of Elohim and of the Master יהושע Messiah, to the twelve tribes who are in the dispersion: Greetings.

Jud 1:1  Yehudah, a servant of יהושע Messiah, and brother of Yaʽaqoḇ, to those who are called, set-apart by Elohim the Father, and preserved in יהושע Messiah:

Verse 5-6 – What if? Eli’ezer is thinking ahead. Suppose that she doesn’t want to come back with me, what should I do, bring Yitshaq to her? Abraham admonishes Eli’ezer to not take Yitshaq back to Abraham’s homeland. Why?

Verses 7-9 – This is beautiful, stop and think about this scenario; Good and faithful servant, YHVH is sending a messenger ahead of you so, go and fetch a Bride for My Son!

Mat 25:21  “And his master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy servant. You were trustworthy over a little, I shall set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’

Abraham once again admonishes Eli’ezer not to bring Yitshaq back to Haran.

Verse 10 – He took 10 camels. A quorum, a body, fullness, like the 10 Words and where did he go? To the land of Aram, which is named for the Amarru or Amartu people, Amorites. Abraham and his family lived in the land of the Amorites who were nomads, a pastoral people which later became warlike and controlled much of Mesopotamia. ((For those who will not be able to see the map below the area of Aram starts at Mt. Hermon and run north along the mountains up to the Euphrates River and then south and west to Mosul, Iraq (Ninevah).

Because of this, many scholars believe that Abraham himself was an Amorite but this is false. I believe that Abraham came for Uruk of the Khattis, not the better known Ur of the Chaldees. Ur is on the western bank of the Euprates and Uruk is on the eastern bank of the Euphrates. That would have forced Abraham to “cross over”.

Gen 15:18  On the same day יהוה made a covenant with Abram, saying, “I have given this land to your seed, from the river of Mitsrayim to the great river, the River Euphrates,

Gen 15:19  with the Qĕynite, and the Qenizzite, and the Qadmonite,

Gen 15:20  and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Repha’im,

Gen 15:21  and the Amorite, and the Kenaʽanite, and the Girgashite, and the Yebusite.”

Deu 11:24  ‘Every place on which the sole of your foot treads is yours: from the wilderness, and Lebanon, from the river, the River Euphrates, even to the Western Sea is your border.

This would have been everything west of the Euphrates River up to and including the River of Egypt, or modern Wadi El Arish.

Verse 11-14 – Eli’ezer stopped at a fountain to wait for the future Bride of his Master’s Son. What did he do at this point? He prayed for discernment

Joh 4:6  And Yaʽaqob’s fountain was there. So יהושע, being wearied from the journey, was sitting thus at the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.

Joh 4:7  A woman of Shomeron came to draw water. יהושע said to her, “Give Me to drink.”

What did he need discernment for? To tell clean for unclean. To find the acceptable Bride not a false one. Mat 22:11  “And when the sovereign came in to view the guests, he saw there a man who had not put on a wedding garment,

Mat 22:12  and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here not having a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless.

Php 4:6  Do not worry at all, but in every matter, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to Elohim.

Verse 15 – Now we see the acceptable Bride carrying a burden on her shoulder to the Fountain of Living Water – Yeshua.

Mat 16:24  Then יהושע said to His taught ones, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his stake, and follow Me.

Mar 8:34  And calling near the crowd with His taught ones, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his stake, and follow Me.

Luk_9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

Mat 11:28  “Come to Me, all you who labour and are burdened, and I shall give you rest.

Mat 11:29  “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am meek and humble in heart, and you shall find rest for your beings.

Verses 16-21 Look at what the young woman agrees to do “Let me draw water for your camels too.” People who do not know camels think that they would drink like a horse or an ox. This is not true. A camel can drink 40-50 gallons of water at one time, now multiply this times ten. This is what makes what she willfully agrees to do as so phenomenal.

Verse 22 – By giving her a nose ring Eli’ezer had actually placed her in bondage and by placing bracelets on her wrists he “seals” or binds her for his Master: Eze 16:11  “And I adorned you with ornaments, and I put bracelets on your wrists, and a chain on your neck.

Eze 16:12  “And I put a ring on your nose, and earrings in your ears, and a crown of adorning on your head.

Eze 16:13  “Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your dress was of fine linen, and silk, and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour, and honey, and oil. And you were exceedingly pretty, and became fit for royalty.

He adorned the Bride for His Master’s Son.

Jer 2:32  “Would a maiden forget her ornaments, or a bride her headband? Yet My people have forgotten Me, days without number.

1Pe 3:3  Your adornment should not be outward – arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on dresses –

1Pe 3:4  but the hidden Man of the heart, with the incorruptible ornament of a meek and peaceable spirit, which is of great value before Elohim.

1Pe 3:5  For in this way, in former times, the set-apart women who trusted in Elohim also adorned themselves, being subject to their own husbands,

Verse 23-25 – “Whose daughter are you?” Sound familiar? In my part of the world it was the familiar refrain of “Who’s your people”? Look at what Ribkah tells this stranger. Not only do we have a place for you and your people but also the camels. Amazing hospitality.

Verses 26-30 – Notice that Eli’ezer immediately gives thanks but remains at the well(water) and the girl runs home and tells her family. Looking at Ribkah they see her adorned as a bride and her brother runs to the man at the well. Now, we see Laban run to the well and finds Eli’ezer and invites him into their home and provides for the animals.

Rev 3:20  “See, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I shall come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.

Verse 31-33 – “Come in, O blessed of YHVH”. Isn’t this what we want to hear on judgment day? They welcomed the servant into their house and provided water to wash the feet of all those who came with the servant. Then they set food in front of the hungry men. Going through a door- washing feet- eating a meal. Any significance?

Verse 34-36 – “I am Abraham’s servant”. I imagine Eli’ezer said this with a great deal of pride. We see the blessings of following YHVH and in verse 36 we see a very important fact: “He has given him all that he has.” Mat 3:17  and see, a voice out of the heavens, saying, “This is My Son, the Beloved, in whom I did delight.”

Mat 28:18  And יהושע came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

Verses 37-48 – The servant recounts the tale of his master’s oath.

Verses 49-57 – Turn right or left/good or evil. Laban and Bethuel answered properly, no man can decide for us which direction we will go. Only we ourselves can make that decision. Evil can look very inviting, a warm bed, three meals a day, festivities. But the faithful servant won’t wait 10 days. He immediately wants to do what his master has sent him to do. So, now decide.

Verse 58 – “I shall go” responds the faithful Bride.

Verses 59-61 – The Bride and her maidens: Mat 25:1  “Then the reign of the heavens shall be compared to ten maidens who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.

Mat 25:2  “And five of them were wise, and five foolish.

Mat 25:3  “Those who were foolish, having taken their lamps, took no oil with them,

Mat 25:4  but the wise took oil in their containers with their lamps.

Mat 25:5  “Now while the bridegroom took time, they all slumbered and slept.

Mat 25:6  “And at midnight a cry was heard, ‘See, the bridegroom is coming, go out to meet him!’

Verses 62-67 – Yitshaq was in the field meditating. Imagine what he must have felt when he saw the camels. Immediately upon learning that this was her future husband Ribkah put her veil on.

Ahavah,

“Following my Master’s Instructions”

Verse 5-6 – What if? Eli’ezer is thinking ahead. Suppose she doesn’t want to come back with me, what should I do, bring Yitshaq to her? Abraham admonishes Eli’ezer to not take Yitshaq back to Abraham’s homeland. Why?

NOTE: When I break down a chapter it is difficult, at times, to decide which verse is amplifying another. Another way to break this down is to have verses 6 and 7 modifying verse 8. Or, are verses 5, 6 and 7 all modifying verses 8 and 9. See the next note below Verses 7-9 and I will try to explain it better.

Verses 7-9 – This is beautiful, stop and think about this scenario; Good and faithful servant, YHVH is sending a messenger ahead of you so, go and fetch a Bride for My Son! ((Please read Shem./Ex. 21:1-6 and Deb./Deu. 15:16-17))

Mat 25:21  “And his master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy servant. You were trustworthy over a little, I shall set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’

Abraham once again admonishes Eli’ezer not to bring Yitshaq back to Haran.

NOTE: Now if we put it all into one complete thought we get something really awesome. I will try to illustrate it with Scriptures: Gen 17:4 “As for Me, look, My covenant is with you, and you shall become a father of many nations.

Deu 32:8 “When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance When He separated the sons of Aḏam, He set the boundaries of the peoples According to the number of the children of Yisra’ěl.+++

Deu 32:9 “For the portion of יהוה is His people, Ya‛aqoḇ His allotted inheritance.

Mat_15:24 And He answering, said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Yisra’ěl.”

Mat 28:19 “Therefore, go and make taught ones of all the nations, immersing them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Set-apart Spirit,

+++ = The two oldest versions of Scriptures; The Septuagint and the Dead Sea Scrolls Tanakh read Elohim rather than Yisra’el. By inserting Yisra’el it makes no sense.

What do we have now? “My faithful servants, go out into the nations and find My Son’s Bride among them and bring her to Him.” This is exactly what the B’rit Hadasha and the Book of Revelation is all about

Verse 10 – He took 10 camels*. Hermon and runs north along the mountains up to the Euphrates River and then south and west to Mosul, Iraq (Ninevah).

*Just for reference, the word for camel is gamal – and the word for rope is gamla/gemla so, in light of this, which is more likely for it to be here: Mat 19:24 “And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the reign of Elohim.”

Look at the context. Which is more likely to thread through a needle — a rope or a camel? This is how religious doctrine gets started, by not understanding the context. Christianity has invented a gate going into Jerusalem named “The eye of the needle gate” to explain the mistranslation of the text here. Stop and think how this “new” idea works. When loaded camels reach this gate they had to kneel down and be unloaded and then go threw the gate and then, on the other side, they are made to kneel again to be reloaded. What idiot, sorry, imbecile would bring his camels to that gate?!!! There are multiple gates going into Jerusalem that would accommodate a Greyhound bus? If you have not seen the gates of Jerusalem please use any reliable reference work and view them.

The important thing to remember is that at the time that YHVH declares this promise to Abraham all of this land is the possession of Mitzrayim.
