Bereshith (Genesis) 20 — Abimelek the righteous

Lesson date: 13/29/5854AA

Verse 1 – Abraham “set out” –  H5265 – נָסַע – nâsa‛ – naw-sah’ – A primitive root; properly to pull up, especially the tent pins, that is, start on a journey:

Nasa’ means to pull up the tent stake: Mat 10:38  “And he who does not take up his stake and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.

Mat 16:24  Then יהושע said to His taught ones, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his stake, and follow Me.

Mar 10:21  And יהושע, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One matter you lack: Go, sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven. And come, follow Me, taking up the stake.”

Gerar. קָדֵּש Qaḏĕsh – Strong’s H6946 means,set-apart

Yehuḏah. שוּר Shur – Strong’s H7793 means, wall

Gerar – Strong’s H1642 means, a lodging place

Verse 2 – Once again we see Abraham claiming that Sarah is his sister and Abimelek the local king took Sarah.

Ephesians 4:5 “Therefore, having put off the false, speak truth, each one with his neighbour, for we are members of one another.”

Colossians 3:9 “Do not lie to each other, since you have put off the old man with his practices”

Ecclesiastes 7:20 “For there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and does not sin.”

Verses 3 -7 – Look at what happens in these verses; YHVH appears to Abimelek in a dream and warns Abimelek and Abimelek asks, “would you kill a righteous nation also”. Doesn’t this sound suspiciously like Ber. 18:18? Could it be that YHVH had a covenant with Abimelek and YHVH told him that he, too would be a nation? YHVH appears to Abimelek before he has had the opportunity to sleep with Sarah.

Verse 8-10 – Abimelek calls out Abraham after confessing to his own people what had happened and the people were shocked.

Verse 11 – I believe that Abraham wrongly judged Abimelek and his people by telling himself that the people had no fear of Elohim.

Verse 12-13 – We see Abraham explain his relationship with Sarah and also explains that he had told Sarah this when they first set out for his father’s house.

Verses 14-16 – Once again Abraham is rewarded for bad behavior but look at what Abimelek says to Sarah about the 1,000 pieces of silver. This does not refer to the habit of placing coins over the eyes of a dead person. This was a Greek habit. This was meant that it would hide any shame experienced by her when other people heard about what happened. Think of it in the context of a bride wearing a veil on her wedding day.

Verses 17-18 – Abraham prayed to Elohim as it was requested and Abimelek and his people were healed.

We don’t really have a lot of information about Abimelek but it is obvious that he knows and listens to YHVH and declares that his nation is a righteous nation. It is in Verse 7 that Abraham is identified as a prophet once again.

Verse 8-10 – Abimelek calls out Abraham after confessing to his own people what has happened and the people were shocked.

This Chapter tells us of a righteous king named Abimelek – “My father is king” not to be confused with the unrighteous king by the same name in Judges Chapters 8 & 9.
