Lesson date:04/23/5858AA
Why did I entitle the study the way I did? Because in the English translation of the Hebrew Tanakh this is the first time that the term Word is used. We have looked at it in the past but that was according the the Aramaic Targums and the use of the word Mamre or Memra(h), which is Word.
Remember wat had just happened: Lot had been kidnapped, Abram took his men against four tough kings, did battle and chased them all night and recover everything and everyone that had been taken. On the way home he meets Malkitseḏeq and he is offered all the treasure taken and he refuses it because he said he wants no on(person/man) to be able that they made Abraham rich. Instead, he puts all his faith in YHVH.
Verse 1 – Look at it closely and imagine what is taking place: the Word of YHVH is coming to Abram in a dream and makes the promise of a covenant and that as a sign of the fulfillment of the covenant YHVH would give him descendants as numerous as the stars.
Let me say this carefully, the One who is telling Abram about this covenant is the One who will one day be the fulfillment of the Covenant, Yeshu’a Messiah: Gal 3:16 But the promises were spoken to Aḇraham, and to his Seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Messiah.
Look closely at what is being said in Verse 1 – the word of יהוה came to Aḇram in a vision, Let’s examine the word “came” – H1961 – היה – hâyâh – BDB Definition: 1) to be, become, come to pass, exist, happen, fall out
Exo 3:14 And Elohim said to Mosheh, “I am that which I am.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Yisra’ěl, ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ”
“I am that which I am.” = ’eheyeh ’asher ’eheyeh, – ‘eheyeh is derived from hayah – H1961
Let’s jump forward just a little bit so I can explain something that is happening in Verse 1 of Chapter 15: Gen 20:7 “And now, return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and let him pray for you and you live. But if you do not return her, know that you shall certainly die, you and all that are yours.”
If Abram is a prophet (nabiy) where is his prophecy? Right here in Verse 1: מַחֲזֶה – maḥazeh – Strong’s H4236 – vision, prophesy. Do you see how awesome that is? Abram’s prophecy is that of his descendant becoming the Messiah. Ever think about it that way? Okay, let’s take it one step further, the root word for – maḥazeh – is H2372 – chazah – which is the root word for Hazon – Revelation. I love it.
Now look at what is promised – I am your shield, – Isn’t this awesome? Isa 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not look around, for I am your Elohim. I shall fortify you, I shall also help you, I shall also uphold you with the right hand of My righteousness.’
your reward is exceedingly great.” Rev 22:12 “And see, I am coming speedily, and My reward is with Me, to give to each according to his work. Does He say He will reward based on their faith? Nope, He uses that dirty work Work.
Pro 11:18 The wrong one earns false wages, But the one sowing righteousness, a true reward.
Psa 58:11 And man says, “Truly, the righteous are rewarded; Truly, there is an Elohim judging in the earth.”
The Word is trying to get Abram to see the Truth of the matter: I AM your shield, I AM your great reward, I AM worth fighting 4 kings for, I AM worth the journey and Abram, I AM your inheritance.
Verse 2 – Look at how Abram addresses this entity – “Master יהוה, – He had no doubt about to whom he was speaking. I wish I knew how he knew. That would answer so many questions for me. It is all about the Name of YHVH. It is obviously unmistakable: Num 6:27 “Thus they shall put My Name on the children of Yisra’ěl, and I Myself shall bless them.”
His Voice is loud and clear, that I know.
Abram identifies Eli’ezer as his designated one who inherits but as I mentioned above the Word is telling him that He is Abram’s inheritance: Rev 21:7 “The one who overcomes shall inherit all this, and I shall be his Elohim and he shall be My son.
1Jn 5:3 For this is the love for Elohim, that we guard His commands, and His commands are not heavy,
1Jn 5:4 because everyone having been born of Elohim overcomes the world. And this is the overcoming that has overcome the world: our belief.
It is very natural that Abram would as YHVH what would He give him for a reward because he had no children: Psa 127:3 Look, children are an inheritance from יהוה, The fruit of the womb is the reward.
Verse 5 – The Word brings Abram outside and tells him: הַבֶט־נָאָ֣ – habbeyth-na and it is translated as “Look now toward”. This is incorrect. Remember the study I sent you called The Forgotten Word Na. What is being said is “Please look toward” – na = please, as in: Gen 22:2 And He said, “Take your son, now, your only son Yitsḥaq, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriyah, and offer him there as an ascending offering on one of the mountains which I command you.”
What is being said is “Please take you son. Also: Mat 21:9 And the crowds who went before and those who followed cried out, saying, “Hoshia-na to the Son of Dawiḏ! Blessed is He who is coming in the Name of יהוה! Hoshia-na in the highest!”
Hoshia-na = Save us please.
Verse 6 – Abram believed in YHVH. Gal 3:6 Even so Aḇraham “did believe Elohim, and it was reckoned unto him as righteousness.”
The word used for believed is H539 – אמן – ‘âman – believe, trust, confirm, faithful. This is tied to Jeremiah’s question about the relationship of Amen with Aqin and I believe it is based upon Amet.
Amet is Truth
Aqin is Truthfully
Amein is Truth and well said
Verse 7 – I am YHVH who brought you out. H3318 – yatsa’ is used to describe “brought out”. It would also be used so describe taking the bride out of her father’s house and to the wedding ceremony. YHVH is establishing His relationship to Abram and his descendants right here.
Verses 8-18 These verses are the answer to Abram’s question: “Master יהוה, whereby do I know that I possess it?”
There is a tremendous amount of imagery here but I want to point out this relationship between the Word of YHVH and Abram. We see Abram follow the instructions of the Word and here prepares the animals as he was instructed but the imagery here is that the Word came down from heaven and He walked in the blood of the sacrifices as He would give His Blood and Life for the Covenant of YHVH made right here.
We will discuss it in more detail.
